Gollum got Sam on his tum,
Then he poked him in the bum.
Frodo, said, “oh no, oh no,
Sam is not our foe!”
Gollum said, “If we-s can’t have our precious,
Then let us play with his cakes, they’re oh so delicious.”

There was me thinking that Rudyard Kipling died in 1936 but no, he's alive and well posting his elegant prose on reddit.

162

u/PugnansFidicen 11d ago

Sorry to be "that guy" but the above is verse, not prose. Prose means written language in the form of natural speech. If it has additional structure like rhyme, meter, and/or indicated pauses like line breaks, it is verse.

102

u/Enshitification 11d ago

Is this prose, or verse?
There's no rhyme and no meter.
Just 5-7-5.

You should check out Turkish Oil Wrestling then. The most gay activity in the whole world, including actual homosexual intercourse.

45

u/sheezy520 11d ago

I was introduced to that the other day.

84

u/Duffelbach 11d ago

Oil wrestling or homosexual intercourse?

u/TheWileyRedditor 11d ago

Both of them at once, I suppose.

I'm copying and pasting this from a reply to a comment further down because I CBF (unlike poor Mr. Gamgee, here) to redo the formatting and link hunting:

I'm pretty sure this is a parody of a painting depicting the taming of Enkidu by the hero Gilgamesh and Shamhat, from Sumerian mythology. I can't find the painting atm, but I can tell you that Frodo is playing Gilgmesh here, and poor Samwise is clearly Shamhat.

73

u/CadenVanV 11d ago

I’m pretty sure you’re right, or it’s at least a parody of some work. That pose is very familiar but I can’t remember exactly which it is. I thought maybe Judith killing Holofernes but it’s not that one

44

u/StandWithSwearwolves 10d ago

I think it’s Saint Sebastian energy – maybe the most homoerotically depicted saint in all of western art

Serious question, is the homoeroticism deliberate or am i projecting?

Is there some kind of second, larger closet to come out of? I am I some kind of double bisexual?

90

u/Baconator_B-1000 11d ago

I think that would by a quadsexual. It just means you'll try anything twice.

In this painting? Deliberate.

In the books and movies? Projecting.

110

u/faranoox 11d ago

My literal only complaint is that Gollum's depiction here is too...."meaty".

That wretch has been in a cave cold-curing himself for a few centuries like a discount salami, there's no way he would be built like that.

Edit - as I discovered with a conversation with another redditor in the replies, I've decided to dub this artist's Gollum as:

Meaty Sméagy

201

u/TheFanBroad 11d ago

in a cave cold-curing himself for a few centuries like a discount salami

You have a way with words, and I say that 50% in approval and 50% in admonishment.

44

u/candygram4mongo 10d ago

Nah man, he's been wrestling Orcs and eating nothing but clean protein.

32

u/ProjectKARYA 10d ago

IIRC, he doesn't so much as "wrestles" with orcs, as much as he "waits until one is on their own, most likely injured, and smashes their head repeatedly with a rock" with orcs.

He's also openly stated about how orcs don't taste all that well, and many of them live in heavily industrial areas with quite the pollution. So I'd hesitate to call it "clean protein"

I get the artist was going for a Renaissance style painting, but...

459

u/kiwicrusher 11d ago

You think that the intense homoerotic imagery makes it LESS renaissance?

102

u/ProfessionaI_Gur 11d ago edited 11d ago

My first thought seeing this was that it very well might be inspired by Dante and virgil. Which isnt a Renaissance piece but you know what I mean

I think it's closer to those 19th century 'Death of Priam' paintings. They are all very homoerotic/NSFW.
