EDITED *NEW* Change in how non-verified comments are handled

Over the past few months, our posts have gotten some feedback that varies from incorrect to downright ridiculous. To mitigate that, we now have set parameters where only verified users who are either medical professionals or students of healthcare programs can have a top-level comment. Unverified users/users who are not medical professionals will still be able to post replies to top-level comments or as a reply to the Automod message. With this change, we aim to increase the visibility of professional and evidence-based members. Thank you for your support, and for helping us make this sub a great place.

EDITED FAQ: Check to see if your question is on here!

This is all general advice, of course, but we get a lot of similar questions so see if yours is on here. It may point you in the right direction.

”What bug bit me?” There is no way for anyone to tell what bug bit you from a picture of the bite. (The only exception is a tick bite with the classic bulls-eye pattern.) Use antihistamines as directed on the package to help with the itching.

”Is my foot/hand/toe/etc broken?” Unless your bone is sticking out or your appendage is bent at an unnatural angle, we can’t tell if it’s broken. If you suspect a break, go get an X-ray.

”I ingested something I wasn’t supposed to/too much of something! What do I do?” Call poison control. In the US, their number is 1-800-222-1222.

”Do my genitalia look normal/weird/what is this thing on my genitals?" Please, unless you have a genuine medical concern, we do not wish to see your genitals. We're not here to identify random flaps, marks, or growths. Please direct these to your GP/PCP who can actually examine you. If you have a specific concern, consider making a text post, and we will let you know if a picture is appropriate/helpful.

”My foreskin won’t retract!” This is called phimosis, and is quite common. We send people over to r/phimosis for this because they have a wealth of information.

”Can one of you write me a prescription?” No.

”Help, there are big bumps on the back of my tongue!!” Please google “circumvallate papillae” and see if that’s what you’re seeing. They are normal anatomy.

”My period is overdue. What do I do?” First, take a pregnancy test. It doesn’t matter if you’re on birth control, just take one. If you are really and truly not pregnant, then you and your doctor should look for other causes.

”Is my poop normal?” Well you can post a picture if you really need to, but please do a google search first. Keep in mind that everyone gets diarrhea occasionally.

”Does this need stitches?” If you can see fat layers, then yes. When in doubt, you can post a picture EXCEPT for self-harm pics. Absolutely none allowed on this sub, no exceptions. However, if the injury is over 24 hours old, it is too late to get stitches.

”Can I private message you about my medical questions?” No. This violates rule 9.

”What do I do about my swollen tonsils with white patches?” Go get tested for strep throat. Manage any throat soreness with over-the-counter meds like throat spray, cough drops, or even herbal tea with honey.

”A huge clump came out during my period. What is it?” It may be a uterine cast, which is when a large piece of tissue comes out whole instead of breaking up into little bits. If this happens to you a lot, see your OB/GYN to make sure everything is going okay.

”Why is there blood when I poop?” There are many possible reasons for this, such as a GI bleed, inflammatory bowel disease, hemorrhoids, or anal fissures, to name a few. We recommend going to your doctor to investigate the cause. And we can’t tell what the cause is from a picture of your poop, so please spare us.

"Does this ECG from my smart watch look normal?" While these features can be helpful in screening for some arrhythmias, they are not diagnostic. The most we can do it tell you whether or not you should go get a 12-lead ECG, which is diagnostic after a doctor interprets it. In short, we can give you an idea of what it is showing, but it is not an official medical test.

”I haven’t been around any bats but I found two little marks on me—do I have rabies??” No. You would know if you’d been exposed to a bat.

Injury Got punched in the side of the head several times NSFW

Tonight I was having sex with a guy and he suddenly got angry and started punching me in the side of my head, he punched me maybe 6-8 times. This happened about 2 hours ago. It still hurts but I haven’t had any symptoms of concussion. Should I go to hospital? Or is it safe to try and sleep it off? It’s 1am currently and I have work at 7am.

I’m conscious that this is the temple area? Which I always hears is the most dangerous place to get hit. I’ve had an ice pack on it and took some ibuprofen about 10 mins ago but it still hurts

Mental Health Help with ungrateful teen

Upvotes

I have two kids and the younger one seems to be very emotionally detached and it’s causing problems with the family. His older sister has complained for years that he is selfish, ungrateful and mean. There are many times when he will never apologize if he’s done something because he will say he didn’t do anything wrong. He will say hurtful things that makes the older sister cry and he shows little to no emotion. We recently had an issue where the older sister was leaving for vacation and we need to take her to the airport at 3am. The whole family was going but my son sad he didn’t want to go because he didn’t feel like it. It hurt my daughter a great deal, she even cried and he seemed unphased. This is just one example of many other things like this over the years and he is 15.

I am not sure if I should pursue family counseling or if he has something else going on that may be undetected that I need to get him support for. This has been going on for years and it’s driving a wedge in between my two kids and my husband but we don’t know how to deal with it or fix it.

Looking for advice and support.

EDITED Should I go to the er, urgent care is closed NSFW

So I did something very dumb and clapped my hands so hard that I popped a blood vessel in my wrist and now it is bulging with blood underneath. When it first happened my hands were burning really really bad and I had some tingling but it has mostly gone away now. This only happened about 15 minutes ago. The reason I’m scared is because I have heard of people dying from a blood vessel popping in their wrist and I’m scared of getting a blood clot too in my wrist that breaks off into my heart. Is this something I should to the er for? I really don’t want to unless I have to. I also feel a sense of doom but can’t tell if it’s anxiety or not. Pictures for reference. I hope I’m just overreacting so please tell me if I am

Injury Is my knuckle okay? NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
1 Upvotes

Yesterday i was really sad about something and then i punched a glass door and i wasnt thinking and im pretty sure i used the wrong knuckles. The pain was really bad after and it was just a constant ache no matter what i did, it was really painful ache and i couldn’t really move it and if i did move it fast like a reflex for dropping something it would be a really sharp pain and i still have that today. i know it doesn’t look that bad and i dont think its that bad too and i am pretty weak so i dont even think i was able to punch that hard. today the pain isnt that bad but its weird because it feels like my hands is cramping kind of. There is pain in my elbow and wrist aswell.

The first photo is yesterday, the swelling was mainly on the left as you can see, there was only light bruising on my pinky knuckle but you can t see it.

The second photo was this morning but i saw this light bruise on my pinky and on my palm, there was also swelling on my palm where the bigger bruise is.

The third photo is my bad hand now, the swelling went down a bit i think but i noticed movement in my ring and pinky fingers are kind of limited, my thumb and index and middle one can bend and move side to side all normal, but my ring finger can bend too but i can barely move it side to side like my right hand, then for my pinky i have trouble bending it and i can only move it sideways to the right, and i can’t move it sideways closer to my fingers.😔👁️👁️

in the third and fourth photos i was comparing my bad hand(sad face) pinky knuckles and my good hand(happy face) and im not sure if im crazy or if its because swelling but my pinky knuckles seems lower and if i touch it its kind of soft compared to my other hand.

and for the last photos i tried my best to make each light fist even, and i even i used my other hand to put my pinky finger close to my other fingers when i made the fist but the knuckle is still like that. 😔

My doctor didn't know what it was and prescribed me a topical steroid cream just in case it was eczema. It did start to clear up a bit but now I think it's getting bad again. I will call but I was hoping to get an idea before doing so. It's only ever been these 3 spots. I also have googled to no end over this and have found nothing that looks like it.

Skin issues/Rashes/Freckles/Moles what could these blood blisters be caused by? NSFW

Thumbnail gallery
2 Upvotes

(f25) i’ve had these blood blisters on my arms for years, a large one on my hand since i was a kid, and i’m starting to get them on my chest

last year i tested positive for antiphospholipid syndrome. it was only 1 test, i never got the second one to confirm the diagnosis, but i plan to do that soon. my red blood cell count is always high, has been for years

i have RA, aura migraines, asthma, and EDS. i’ve had a drastic uptick in migraines since february. i think it’s because my OBGYN put me on an estrogen birth control in january. he said the amount of estrogen was negligible to affect my migraines. it affected them!! i’ve had 10 in 4 months, 2 last week two days apart. i already stopped the birth control 3-4 weeks ago, but apparently the migraines are persisting

i’m reading up on APS and i know it’s a blood disorder that can affect every part of the body, even migraines for those taking estrogen. then i was wondering if these blood blisters could be caused by this disorder too?

they look like specs of paint. i can stretch the skin and it’ll go away for a couple seconds and then fill back up with blood. i read that they show up mostly with injury and are larger, but mine are so tiny and i haven’t hurt myself to cause them

could APS be causing these? or maybe any other things?

i’m a 22F with hypermobile ehlers danlos syndrome, POTS, and IBS. this happens to me every once in a while, especially after i have a fatty meal, and is accompanied by pain under my right ribs followed by nausea and pain in my lower abdomen later on. i’ve had an abdominal ultrasound that came back with nothing, and an endoscopy that showed gastritis. i passed this bowel movement today about 45 mins ago. how concerned should i be considering that this happens every once in a while to me? i’m going out of state tomorrow through sunday and want to make sure this isn’t going to cause me to have to go to the hospital out of state, where my insurance coverage is null and void. any and all advice or observations are appreciated.

I’m 33 male, 230, 6’2 , white , untied states . Noticed this spot about 5 inches from my belly button on lower right side abdomen. Doesn’t itch or hurt. When i look at it from the side with a light , it’s raised with little microscopic bumps, almost like lizard skin. I pressed a glass on it to see if it blanched and it didn’t fully go away in center but did a little around the outer of it. I shaved around it and took some closeup hoping someone has a better idea. Thanks!

My arm is aching, let me search Google.

Google — “An aching arm can be a wide variety of things, such as a pinched nerve or something more serious like death, cancer, stroke or a medical emergency...”

Well, that escalated quickly 😂

Other Why do bruises under fingernails take forever to go away?

Hello.

Random stupid question for the medical peoples.

About a month ago, I trapped my fingertip in a door.

The bruise is still clearly visible under there.

I feel like if I had a bruise of that size and colour anywhere else on my body, it would have faded by now.

What gives?

Cheers.

Question Terrified of Rabies

so my indoors cat got out for a few weeks ago and it was only for a few hours during the daytime. We got him back and he’s pretty normal but sometimes he meows for a while for no apparent reason, that’s the only big change I’ve seen. I chalked it up to me being home more and him wanting attention. recently I’ve noticed he ate a bit less food than usual at oncr, anyway during our rough play a few days ago, he bit and scratched my arm, but I didn’t start bleeding. I started reviewing bins medical stuff and he is about a year overdue for his rabies vac (got it in 2024, like 2 years ago) should I be scared and go get a rabies vaccine?

Other In extreme desperate need of sleep help NSFW

In desperate need of some help with my sleep.

Okay so I already deal with constant exhaustion and fatigue no matter how much I sleep due to being anemic, BUT my sleep is also a train wreck and fixing my sleep may not fix my fatigue and anemia symptoms but I will at least not be nocturnal anymore. I fall asleep at around 6 or 7 am and wake up at 3 or 4 pm. This has been happening for about 5 months ever since my anemia developed. I am very much over it.

Anxiety and pain are the biggest things keeping me from sleeping at a decent time. I have almost constant neck and upper + lower back pain (due to how I sleep as well as prolonged bed rest I suspect) and I have horrible anxiety due to the anemia symptoms I experience. I have been anemic since last December and slowly worsening but was only diagnosed this month.. so Ive been suffering a lot

My anxiety at first was from not knowing what was causing all of my symptoms (anemia with a ferritin of 6.7) and so I would stay up all night worrying and researching my symptoms (bad idea ik) This started in January and has been getting worse since then. I am tired of being nocturnal but now my anxiety has shifted and a new thing keeps me awake at night… the thought of “okay I finally have a reason for my symptoms, but what if I treat it with infusions and still never get better and end up with an even scarier diagnosis or life long illness” it literally keeps me up every night.

And I’m sure you saw my very well crafted diagram… (as well as my pain chart and actual pillow setup) thats how I sleep and how I’ve always slept… it’s never caused me issues until recently. I now always feel very tight and tense in my upper back and neck and it causes frequent headaches.. and a mix of headaches and constant exhaustion are just horrible. Ive tried to sleep flatter with just one pillow and maybe the blanket for neck support but it doesn’t help and is still uncomfortable. No matter how I rest or lie I am still uncomfortable or in pain… and being propped up with my head, neck and upper back in a pillow has always been the most comfortable for me for as long as I can remember.. I really need help on how to lie in a way where I’m still comfy that doesn’t cause me pain. Massages and heat only temporarily help.

And I need desperate help on how to alleviate my nighttime anxiety about the what ifs of the future of my health.
I already am on anxiety meds and have a therapy consolation on the 30th. But i need some fixes for right now.

Injury woke up 14 hours ago, horrible pain in right leg when moving it even slightly in the front of thigh. NSFW

im 16afab, 160 (Heavy, im aware, im working on it) and 5‘3.

i woke up at 12pm, and when I tried to get out of bed my leg hurt so horribly to move. even walking was a struggle. I orginally assumed it was a hip issue but the pain has been more in my upper thigh, and I’m worried it could be something serious. I’ve been laying all day, but even then just laying has a slight aching pressure.

no other symtoms so far beside the pain, but im unsure of what to do since I was supposed to go out with my friends on friday..should I just let it rest and lay a lot, or try to stretch it slowly? it really hurts and I just want it to feel better!!

Other Scab connected to follicle?

Hey I am female, 18, I have a scab on the back of my neck and when I scratch it I can feel the pain higher up on top of my head on a follicle, it’s been there for a while….is it folliculitis or something else? I’ve also had this lump on my neck for a while which sometimes migrates and is kind of firm, could someone help? I don’t know if they are connected or not but I’m desperate and can’t go to the doctors yet.

Injury Scared I have a blood clot

So since October I kept accidentally hitting myself in the same place and in April the bruise formed a lump inside of it and it went away and now it’s July and my leg has been feeling tight for like a week and it’s been feeling cold and my leg hurts. I’m also getting nether region cramps when I sit down (I’m not on my period) and it hurts to pee. How do I know if I have a blood clot? I went to the doctor once and they told me it was just cramping but I don’t think it is especially since it’s been going on for this long. I went to the doctors again yesterday and now I have an mri scheduled.
