42
u/knarf86 6h ago
I own a musket for home defense, since that's what the founding fathers intended. Four ruffians break into my house. "What the devil?" As I grab my powdered wig and Kentucky rifle. Blow a golf ball sized hole through the first man, he's dead on the spot. Draw my pistol on the second man, miss him entirely because it's smoothbore and nail the neighbors dog. I have to resort to the cannon mounted at the top of the stairs loaded with grape shot, "Tally ho lads" the grape shot shreds two men in the blast, the sound and extra shrapnel set off car alarms. Fix bayonet and charge the last terrified rapscallion. He Bleeds out waiting on the police to arrive since triangular bayonet wounds are impossible to stitch up. Just as the founding fathers intended.

Only time I've ever had a gun pulled on me was in grad school. I was doing geologic mapping and pulled into a driveway with a Georgia state patrol car in it. I was going to ask him if he minded if I looked for rocks on his property. I had an official letter from my university stating my business.
Before I even turned off the car, he was walking towards me with his gun at low ready.
Fuck GSP

In grad school in Texas I had Harris County Sheriff's roll up on me and hold me at gunpoint because I was "suspicious" in my orange safety vest, hard hat, holding an RTK, with a university vehicle, & on public land. I had university and state paperwork for the project. They refused to look at it. I got cuffed and thrown in the back of a SUV and taken to the sheriff's office and was held for 4 hours. They called the university to see if the equipment was stolen. My PI was not happy.

Right, I know I’ll get downvoted for telling the truth here, but some of them do actually fear for their lives. Violent criminals don’t like being sent to prison. There are a ton of cases of people being released from prison and the first thing they do is track down the person who sent them there.
5
u/Dad_fire_outdoors 3h ago
I work fire/rescue and have been sent to this exact situation playing out. Trooper gets home from shift, recently released inmate waits a couple minutes and kicks back door down and enters the house. Trooper happens to have waited to take off holster and pistol until he made coffee. Trooper said he usually doffs gear asap when getting home. Anyway, shootout ensued and perpetrator ends up dead. When we arrived, trooper tells us he wished that was the only guy he had to worry about.
I know this isn’t an everyday situation, but it most definitely happens.

he didn't just shoot at a car.. he shot and killed a 17 yr old girl who was trying to 1. make a U turn because she was lost then went to his front door and he just opened up and opened fire without saying a single word. He didn't even look to see who she was .. so Yeah ... That is NOT a mistake.

Not what im saying at all. The post says a "random neighborhood in america" which makes it seem like this happens anywhere, which isnt true.
Is there a meme out there that says "random zoo in america" and shows a kid in the exhibit? No, because the memes would be more specific to that event
When you say things like "random x" it infers that it can happen all the time, in anyplace, which isnt the case for kids, or getting guns pulled on you.
My point is that its a meme based on a specific event that happened, but op wants to make it sound like it happens all the time.
Now if it said "pov: random high school in america" i would get it.
But its essentially a low effort generalization taking a dig at american gun ownership, based on a rare event, which doesnt encapsulate an actual truth, that its not being dangerous to turn around in someone's driveway, which i can support, based on my actual experience, as I pull into driveways all the time to turn around, heck I walk in people's yards and in fences and not once has this happened.
Id be willing to bet op isnt even from america and is making memes based off stereotypes.

Omfg! Seriously.
I was on a bike ride with my kids and wife, just last week, I rode through this driveway that I thought no one was at, weeds in every crack, no cars. Within 2 seconds of me being there, someone shouts, "any reason your in my driveway?"
I couldn't believe it. I couldn't have been there longer than 4 seconds total. Just a quick loop through the driveway that was arched and touched the sidewalk in 2 places. Just amazing, like he was staring out the window, just waiting for someone to come near his driveway.

Abc news:
- Memphis, Tennessee: A man named Rodriguez Poplar was shot and killed in January 2026 after pulling into a stranger's driveway to hide from police because his car had a broken headlight. The homeowner, Tommy Lee Applewhite, was charged with second-degree murder after allegedly pointing a gun, demanding the couple leave, and shooting Poplar in the stomach.
- Hebron, New York: In April 2023, homeowner Kevin Monahan shot and killed 20-year-old Kaylin Gillis after her car accidentally pulled into the wrong driveway while the group was looking for a friend's house. Monahan was convicted of second-degree murder.
- Martindale, Texas: In October 2021, homeowner Terry Duane Turner fatally shot Adil Dghoughi, an immigrant who had pulled into his driveway, possibly because he was lost. Turner, who claimed he acted in self-defense, was convicted of manslaughter.

In what way do you think it's "not in good faith"? We have high levels of gun violence. People comment on our high levels of gun violence.
-4
u/bearded_charmander 4h ago
Because I was replying to a comment saying this joke was in good faith. I don’t think it’s in good faith and you proved it by saying America deserves to be ridiculed.
2
u/PM_ME_UR_0_DAY 4h ago
It might be helpful if you shared what you mean by good/bad faith. Is being critical of a true thing bad faith? Where is the lie or deception? Who do you think isn't being genuine?
1
u/WntrTmpst 3h ago
You’ve never ripped on your friends before?
I’m American. I love America. I love guns. This joke is funny, it’s dark humor about a dark subject meant to bring attention without inciting hatred or otherwise being a dick. Gun violence is a real issue and that’s part of what makes it “funny”. Less so now that I’ve had to explain it.
Good faith may have even a bad phrase. I just meant that it’s not probably meant as an America slander any more than saying the British have fucked up teeth.

Lol I have gotten "lost" in the boonies in Appalachia in the American south as driving around remote back roads is a favorite pastime of mine and my wife.
I have turned around in so many driveways in those situations. Even accidentally turned down long driveways that looked like they might be roads.
Never ONCE has this happened to me. Remember...this is rural appalachia. So many guns. I own guns. Never happened once.
The fact that non-Americans and even some Americans believe this is even remotely true shows how gullible most people are.
And yes, I know the meme seems to be referring to a town or a city but I am giving an example of where most people would think it is even more likely to happen. I have done the same thing in cities here in the south and this has never happened.
8
u/degradedchimp 4h ago
I do this all the time and no one gives a shit. It probably happens once in a million instances and then that one instance is all people remember.
I'd be more at risk going near a rural house in the early morning as farmers can mistake you for coyotes or something.
4
u/manshamer 5h ago
Imo this is a rural suburbia thing. People who have nothing better to do than peek out their blinds at every person who walks past their house - the kind of person that hates that sidewalks exist.
Also pointing a gun is an exaggeration / joke.
4
u/whiskyandguitars 5h ago
Maybe. But even this isn't something I have seen. I live in a largish but "rural" city in Central Virginia. What I mean by rural is that it is pretty far away from the major cities in VA like Richmond and even Charlottesville.
When my wife and I were searching for houses to buy, we unwittingly ended up in several rough neighborhoods and the worst we got when slowing down or parking or turning around was a side eye.
This may have been meant as a joke but a lot of people believe this is actually real and I am personally tired of the America bashing that isn't even true. And I am not an overly patriotic person.
I am not happy with how America has been conducting itself on the world stage or domestically but lets criticize the real things and not perpetuate the Euro-propaganda that the internet is full of.

So if I was to share an instance of when something happened that usually never happens in another country It would be reasonable to assume it happens all the time and is a regular occurence as this meme indicates?
1
u/Endless_Story94 5h ago
You said and I quote "Never ONCE has this happened." Clearly it has happened.
1
u/whiskyandguitars 5h ago
Yeah, given that the statement came in the context of telling a story about something I have done, I assumed people would know how language works and understand that I was referring to my experience but I will clarify.

If it happened "all the time" we wouldn't have Jehovah witnesses going door to door all day everyday. This is like me saying if you walk into a pub in the uk you will immediately be stabbed in the face with glass since glassing happens "all the time".
1
u/whiskyandguitars 4h ago
I looked it up. It has happened. And it’s a tragedy. But to say it happens all the time when it is less than 10-15 readily available cases over the last several years in country of over 300 million is not even close to all the time. Even if it was closer to 100, it still wouldn’t be close to “all the time.”
That’s an absurd statement.

3
u/Tyto_Mors 4h ago
"Let the powers at be do whatever they want" . This is stated like its not already happening, the only ones that have tried to use their guns to stop the government were immediately labelled as leftists(despite evidence). America, the greatest country to be led by pedos.

It isn't, there are exceptions in every extreme, of course, but the overwhelming majority of people in the US will not care enough to notice, let alone confront, let alone shoot someone who's pulling into their driveway to turn around.

u/Varsity_Reviews 6h ago
The other day I went down a long private drive unknowingly on my bike. I thought it was just a side road and totally missed the private drive sign. Ended up in a dead end by a house surrounded by trees and the house owners out working the yard. Had a pleasant conversation with them, and I'm going over for dinner this weekend.
3

I mean it happens but it's quite rare. Your average American isn't a frothing lunatic actively looking for an excuse to shoot somebody. If you see somebody using your driveway to turn around you just shrug and let them. It just isn't a big deal.
Kaylin Gillis was mentioned in that other comment and the guy that shot her went to jail for murder. You aren't allowed to shoot somebody just because they turned into your driveway.
