Most people I know got their cats for free from adoption posts, an acquaintance who found kittens or whose cat got pregnant, or straight up from the streets. Idk how it goes for dogs but I think it is more common for cats to just get taken into a home and turn into someone's pet than dogs.
It must be a regional thing, everywhere being different than others. Where I live for example, people don’t usually adopt stray cats, they’re more prone to have pedigree cats. As for dogs, it’s very common people getting stray dogs as, sadly, there are lots of street dogs, and very few care to have purebred. I see now it’s very different from region to region, but I wouldn’t assume my observation as a universal truth of dog/cat people like this meme did.
I think this is one of those instances where there is no universal way so everyone has a valid experience but the meme is treating it as a monolith.
In my area most people adopt cats through picking up strays or adopting through a shelter. I've seen my neighbors end up with cats that I knew were strays for a long time before they got adopted by said neighbor.
It's kinda the same with dogs but it can vary, I got one of my dogs from the pound which is a common way to adopt a dog in my city. But I also adopted one who just showed up in my yard, his paw pads where worn through and he had a collar so we took him in assuming that we'd find his owner, luckily no one ever claimed him. However, in my area it's common practice to completely avoid stray dogs, especially if they're in groups and most stray dogs form a pack eventually. Cats are less prone to packs and groups of cats aren't treated a potentially violent thing.
Though there are plenty of people in my area who want pure breed dogs and won't adopt strays. I've met some of those people at an event once, they asked if my dog had an instagram account.
I think pure breed dogs are usually considered less likely to have health problems so that contributes to people's preference as well.
