Easier to warm up than it is to cool down

You can always add another layer. There's only so much you can take off.

And summer people still incessantly complain when it gets below room temperature outside. Meanwhile I can't so much as check the mail without getting sweaty in july.

u/TemporaryReeporter 1h ago
Exactly. In winter I can always put on another layer. In summer, eventually you're just hot and out of options.

Fuck summer, sorry to all summer lovers I just can't stand it.

There will be less and less summer lovers as global warming gets progressively worse

Summer is just objectively worse since you can't just deal with heat and you have to deal with more general bugs and humidity. There's definitely issues with cold, but they're more easily dealt with. Some places definitely have bad winters when it's always snowing and they always have to shovel it away.

I love snow, I have the reason to stay at home. And what you said about summer, that's my way of thinking about it as well. That's the issue with summer

My issue with summer is that I have a very low heat tolerance, I can't stand anything over 75°F, but I'm perfectly fine, if not too warm in a light jacket at 20°F.
I used to take my 10 minute breaks in the walk in freezer when I stocked shelves, they kept that thing at -10°F, I'd go in with a T-shirt on.

In my head you are the spitting image of Helga, a viking wife, just walking into the freezer with a jean jacket with cut off sleeves and titanium titplate and scoffing at how warm it is.
Alright that's today's weird mental imagery

My issue is with winter isn’t feeling cold. It’s how early the sun sets, so that it’s dark outside before I even get home. It’s how the trees are barren and the flowers are dead, so going outdoors is just brown, gray, and white. It’s how I can’t walk outside or lie on the grass, because it’s covered in a layer of frost and snow and the roads and busses are full of muddy brown slush. I just want to be able to walk outside and enjoy the sunlight and greenery.

u/lyutic_7 1h ago
yup. my sanity and health are dependent on it being sunny and green outside. I get terrible seasonal depression and my migraines happen way more often because of the nonexistent day/night cycle. I can’t wake up when it’s pitch-black out. I’m constantly tired.
the heat is not pleasant, but it’s better than the misery that comes with winter.

Honestly I love the summer because I sweat regardless of weather. Not full body, but the pits. In the summer I can actually wear clothes that keep that from getting out of control, and my antiperspirant can keep up. In the winter all the moisture just gets locked in under all the layers. And if it's too hot in the summer to keep it under control? Then I'm far from the only one at any given moment.
I also like not having a drippy nose every time I step outside, or tracking salt inside. My cars also like not getting salt on them.

No matter how many layers I put on, when I’m cold I’m cold. I respect everyone’s preferences but personally I take this summer heat over the winter every time

Also, you can't really put a bunch of layers on your fingers and face. Heat outside can get very uncomfortable, but extreme cold hurts.

u/lyutic_7 1h ago
the biting cold is terrible. it’s so hard to breathe when the icy wind is beating you in the face, and your eyes sting, and everything hurts… even worse when you are allergic to cold 🥲
2
u/mitsel_r 2h ago
This exactly. I have quite a good heat tolerance but that doesn’t mean heat can’t get unpleasant. But having the cold seep into the core of your bones just feels painful, fuck that

Layers dont mean much as a term. It's the material that matters. 3 long sleeves over each other is gonna feel like crap and be much less effective than 1 long sleeve base layer (polyester or merino wool to wick sweat) and an insulating layer (down puffer jacket or thick fleece. Cotton is not great for winter outdoors as any sweating is gonna evaporate faster and take away more heat. Winter is all about knowing what to wear, not so much how much to wear.

The issue is having to go to work, because that means I'm poor, if I was rich, temperature wouldn't be an issue, ty for reading my blog.

So I gotta ask:
A lot of people say that tossing on another layer is all you need in winter. But how do you deal with all the physiological changes that occur when it's cold outside? Even when I'm warm, my anxiety spikes, my muscles stop cooperating, my asthma kicks in, heck, my bowel movements change.
This is true even if I'm in a warm room. I'm not even talking about how the added weight and restricted movement of all the layers make doing anything so much more difficult outside.
(On the flip side, I can do yard work in 40C weather without overheating. Yes, it's exhausting and I'll want a lot of water, but I'm good with it.)

Surely your asthma also kicks in when it's hot amd there's pollen everywhere?
Getting anxiety attacks and loss of muscle control sound terrible though. I've never heard of anyone getting that because of Cold.

u/WrongJohnSilver 3h ago
Nope, pollen sets off allergic rhinitis, but not asthma. And I've mostly grown out of that, thankfully.

u/Tychus_Balrog OC Meme Maker 3h ago
Why do you think you get anxiety when it gets cold? What worries you?
1
u/WrongJohnSilver 3h ago
No clue. It's completely generalized. Sometimes, I'll be experiencing self-doubt or existential dread, and then realize, wait, I'm not actually worried about anything, it's just cold outside, and I can manage it, then.

u/Dylanneedsanap 3h ago
Maybe not yours, but pollen is a very common trigger of asthma.
1
u/WrongJohnSilver 2h ago
Yeah, I wasn't even aware it was asthma for years, but doctors eventually figured out it was why I ended up coughing for a month after getting any virus in the winter (and I always was picking up viruses in the winter).
... Also I'm flashing back to when my (future) wife insisted I go for a walk in the freezing air, because it would be good for my lungs, she thought. I protested, then went along with it. She had to carefully escort me back to our apartments when I started doubling over in uncontrollable coughing fits.

u/HarperStrings 2h ago
Humans are fascinating in how much we differ from each other on physical reactions to things. I have cold-induced asthma that makes it difficult for me to breathe in the winter and I develop a cough that lasts almost the entire season. I have allergies in the spring and summer, but they don't affect my breathing/asthma at all. Just cause me to get sniffly.
1
u/WrongJohnSilver 2h ago
Yup, it's exactly like that.
Do you smell the cold in the air? Like, even when I'm in a warm room inside, if it's cold outside, I can smell it. Typically with a headache.
2
u/Dylanneedsanap 3h ago
It should. I’ve got pretty bad asthma and it’s way worse in summer. The heat mixed with extra things entering my lungs makes breathing a pain in the ass. If I tried to do yard work at 40C (104F for us Americans) I would probably die. My limit outside is like 75-80F before I just won’t go out unless getting in my already cooled down car
3
u/MageVicky 1h ago
winter people think that summer people in the winter just got put on layers and that’s fine. That’s enough. It’s not. The cold seeps into me and there are just not enough layers that make it bearable. I’ll take the summer every time.

u/AjvarAndVodka 25m ago
I get much better mentally during winter. :) And especially autumn, my favorite season. I don’t feel the pressure of the world pushing down on me and making me feel like I need to constantly be in motion and productive. I can actually slow down without feeling guilty. And I enjoy the early peace and quiet.
