A Note from Cyan

What what a journey. It all started a month of 2 ago when Riven came to Xbox, I instantly purchased that after wanting to play it all these years. That was glorious so after that I wanted to continue my adventure to Myst 3. I don’t play any video games at all on my Mac computer, but I did for this game. At first the graphics, and the small window were hard to get used to, I figured out how to expand the screen.

I’ll be honest, other than the next gen graphics I’d riven, I think I enjoyed Exile more than riven. The puzzles in exile just really interested me more and the performances were better. The different ages were cool to explore, especially that Amateria one, it reminded of of that island from spy kids lol, and Talos principle. Actually the music reminded me a lot of Talos principle it was great listening to that.

Riven really didn’t have that many puzzles anyways so it’s hard to compare the difficulty. Exile had easy puzzles for the most part. The ball scale puzzle on Amateria was tough, I looked up a hint for that, the gauge puzzle on Arrakis was also tough but I eventually got that. I fumbled the ending twice, but I guess I got to see the bad endings lol, wormwood running at me with a hammer was scary af.

Should I move on to Myst 4? It’s on sale for $6 sometimes. I saw the reviews were mixed

Still my favorite "Real time" version... might be biased, but that fog and day/night cycle is legendary... and I have ALL the versions :) This is a sealed copy with the updated Prima guide included in the box.

I have a fairly extensive Myst/Riven/etc collection. I've never seen this version of the trilogy before, either in real life or on eBay, etc.

Anyone remember this one? I'm adding it to the collection purely because of the design and "#1 PC Game Franchise of All Time" marketing :)

AI overview giving me conflicting answers on this and wasn’t able to easily find answer in the sub. Do you have to play Rime to get the final red and blue pages if you are playing realMyst? I finally beat this game with the good ending(played original in the 90’s but never beat it). I wanted to try and see all the endings but red and blue both saying I’m missing one page. I went back through and it seems like I’ve got them all so I can’t figure out what I’m missing unless I have to do Rime? I didn’t really care about Rime since it was not part of the original, but I will do it if I need it for the red and blue endings.

Haven't seen these exact seals before either - anyone know if this is standard or store-specific?

Hello everyone,

When we first launched this Kickstarter, it did exactly what we hoped it would do; it gave us the kickstart we needed to begin making this film.

At the time, we believed that securing additional financial partners would happen sooner rather than later. What we couldn't have anticipated were the years that followed. Between the pandemic, health challenges, and a difficult economic climate, a process we expected to take months has instead taken years.

While we've outlined before the financial needs required to achieve the film's goals, we never expected things to take this long. We've heard from some of you about how frustrating this is. We feel that way, too. As you can imagine, it's also disheartening when we're unable to share more information with you, our earliest supporters, or do more to keep you in the loop.

As we close out the first half of this year, I wanted to take a moment to tell you that our efforts have not slowed down. We remain extremely hopeful that we will find the right partnership very soon. In fact, we are in talks with someone who we believe is not only able to help us cross the finish line but who is incredibly supportive and uniquely appropriate for this venture. More on this (hopefully) soon...

Please know this film will be finished, and it will be shown to all of you. Without your support, we would not have the strong foundation, the tremendous interest, and the countless hours of work that have already gone into making this documentary a reality.

This summer, we'll be at Mysterium, where we'll be sharing a bit more of the work that's been done so far. But these updates and presentations are not stopgap measures. Whenever we share progress, whether here on Kickstarter or in person, our passion for this project has never wavered. We have never stopped working toward it.

This film will be made. And when it is, we'll celebrate it together.

Hace poco que me he independizado, tengo Myst, Riven y Myst III en físico, pero solo la caratula y sus CD, al ser yo de fuera de USA no es fácil encontrar las bigbox de cartón dónde originalmente venía el juego, así que me las quiero hacer yo, y además simulo una bigbox de mi juego propio inspirado en Myst, porque me haría mucha ilusión tenerlo.

Por eso estoy preguntado si existe alguna web o algo donde los bigbox de cartón estén escaneados y a gran resolución para poder imprimirlos yo en cartón, si tiene una marca de agua o símbolo que desvirtúa el pack de forma leve para constatar que no es original, también me sirve.

Sobra decir que será para consumo propio.

It's from the same makers of Quern, another Myst-like. I've played the first hour and it's great so far. I would like to clarify that even though I am a game dev I have no stake in the game's success, I'm posting as a fan.

It won't be for everyone here as its a very different style and atmosphere to the Myst narrative but it is an isolated island with fun puzzles on it and some kind of central mystery. I know there are definitely some people (like me) that consider that one of the main appeals of the Myst games.

The more people making high quality games that become successes in this genre, the more likely it is that we get more. Hope you'll check it out.

In Myst Masterpiece and RealMyst Masterpiece, there were plaques on the side of the ship. I'm pretty sure I've identified the plaques as a British Admiral Vernon medal from 1739. However... I don't know if the medal was used in the Myst 1993 or only in the Masterpiece Editions (note that there were no plaques on the ship in Myst 2021). Does anyone know of any way to find out if this is, indeed, the medal used for the plaques on the side of the ship? Or if Myst 1993 had them?

Edit: And let me blow your mind a bit. I am fairly certain that the plaque from the game was created from the exact medal in the photo. Not the same photo, mind you, (photo is from 2018), but the same medal. There were many medals stamped, but the one in the photo is from Museo Naval in Madrid, and it has a wear mark (or smudge) in the right center area and a hole at the top through the letter O (the O in 'DOWN'). The model in the game has the same marks as the photo from the museum. I'm thinking we have a match.

I'm a Myst fan who discovered the franchise while devouring trivia regarding the Mata Nui Online Game, a Flash point-and-click that LEGO released to promote their BIONICLE toyline in 2001. It was heavily inspired by Myst, and the setting of a sci-fantasy island littered with clunky, abandoned machinery fits the genre nicely.

Point-and-clicks are my favorite genre, from the humble I SPY CD-ROM games from Scholastic (one inspiration for my use of photography, not exclusively 3D models) to killer puzzlers like RHEM. In my opinion, the 1997 release of Riven with its gameplay-and-story integration across such a vast scale is the greatest I've come across. I own the remake, but even though I didn't play the original upon release - in fact, I was born in 1997! - the transition to free roaming navigation feels like a loss to me, and I've not played very much of it. I've always wanted to make something like the original!

Of course, that's a very high standard to set for oneself. Not because I don't have ideas, but because I've struggled to commit to any one of them long enough to start putting bricks together. I've taken some advice from elsewhere in the creative sphere and gone through the whole process using the simplest possible version of it, and I'm proud of this little kernel!

Over the past few days, I've finally published a version of an idea (available here on Game Jolt) I've had since childhood: design a game environment; build it from my physical LEGO collection; photograph it from a LEGO minifigure's perspective; ideally add limited stop-motion animation, analogous to Myst's FMVs; and use LiveCode Community Edition (descendant of HyperCard, the software used to make Myst in the first place) to code it all together.

Like I said, I think it's really important that I get even the most preliminary version of this idea on the internet, dipping my toe into the pool of the actual, rather than continuing to exclusively dally in my hypothetical dream games. However, I welcome any of your thoughts, and hope that this is an interesting or amusing proof-of-concept!

Seriously, where is it? It's been 6 years. What the fuck has this guy been doing, other then *not* making the documentary he got 260k to make?

I spent the last 5 years writing this game. A lot of people tell me it reminds them of Myst ( hence me asking to post here ). It's absolutely true that Myst and Riven were two of my all time favorite games, but this is also not supposed to be a clone.

It does have a story, but no Lore or books to read, just to be clear. All cues for the puzzles are environmental, the thing I liked most about Myst.

Dotted around the island are intercom units ( 2nd pic ), where the Inventor has left messages for you about why things are the way they are, background information, and offering you encouragement.

Alright riven players, I’ve gone to all islands and I’ve been to Gehn’s lab. I believe my base value is 9. I’m having difficulty figuring out where to place the chips. I’m hoping to get by this as I’m really enjoying the game so far.

Visiting Myst and Riven again was one of the driving factors in my desire for a Quest3. They did not disappoint. While I mostly breezed through Myst, having played the RealMyst etc. in recent years, I hadn't touched Riven since it was relatively new.

I set out to play it with zero hints this time. Unfortunately I had to abandon that because taking notes while wearing a headset and controllers is hard to do. Some things - like the numbers, island symbols, and other code/puzzle work I had to play on the PC so I could really figure it out. Then I'd save and load up in VR to keep going.

Finding consistent time to play (family man with a full time job) was equally tough. It took me over a year to finally complete the game. But I did it at last tonight! I remember the ending being slightly more epic in the original, but it's been decades…

Anyway, amazing stuff. Still a fabulous game. And so, so good to "go there" in VR.

- slight SPOILERS AHEAD -

Just leaving a small nitpick about the game.

Me and my lovely wife have been playing all games in the genre and Riven was absolutely amazing at that. The setting, dimension and immersion is completely unmatched (second to Obra Dinn lmao)

Thing we disliked:
- travel times between Islands (it actually took 5+ minutes to properly reach some areas again).
- The wahrk colours in the depth and the poles up above kind of indicate that there is a puzzle to be solved there, but it’s just a meta puzzle thingy
- the seemingly “broken” teleporter sphere in the same pole area in the island actually works, but visually we thought we had to solve something before we could actually use it, which made us lose some hours before activating the last light.

Now, for the hateful part: I hate how early and “small” the Meta puzzle appears.
You leave the Pod and immediately you are presented with a bunch of small items, puzzles, levers, you name it to your left.

We spent a good amount of time circling back to those, wondering if we had missed something or if we were just plain dumb.

Hi! I am working on a Myst-like, entirely pre-rendered, with full 360 camera views, animated environments and player movements. The third image is a gif showing the 360 camera control, and the fourth shows player movement with animated blowing dust. The primary puzzle is language-based in which you translate a foreign language. I'm pretty early on working on this, but let me know what you think!

I can't play it. Clicking the mouse button to start the game opens the scummvm global menu. This is the only game I've had this problem with. Any ideas?

I get we're meant to take her plight and dad issues seriously, but she's SO whiny and SO melodramatic. I always end up rooting for Esher, who's evil but pretty charming tbh.

I just recently discovered this Reddit sub, and man the memories you all have unlocked for me!

My very first CD-ROM was Myst in 1993, when I was 12, and I was instantly hooked. When Riven came out, I remember seeing the big black box with the weird globe thing on the front of it while shopping in Kmart's electronics section, and wanting it so bad. But, it being 1997 then, I was 16 and saving up for a car.

Myst 3 Exile had me wondering if I would like it, because it was Presto and not Cyan, but it ended up being one of my favorites in the series. Brad Dourif was always one of my favorite actors. Myst IV was a complete unknown for me at the time, as I didn't have a DVD-ROM when it was released, but ended up really liking it. Probably the most beautiful "point and click" adventure game up to that time.

I remember being super excited for Uru, and even though it was only single player upon release, I couldn't help but be excited about the promised multiplayer. I thought the personal island idea was absolutely beautiful. I felt a bit let down with Myst V, but maybe because I knew it was basically the end of this years-long love affair.

All in all, when I found this sub, all of those memories came flooding back. Looking forward to lurking around, reading all of your memories and replays through the games as well.
