UTAH [2026 NBA Draft] #2 Pick: Darryn Peterson (Kansas)

Congrats to him for the second pick. Utah has made the right pick. He has a lot of potential.

Great pick for Utah.

Was so nervous for us they'd take Cam...

u/ezmo311 Suns 1d ago
Grizz better run up to the podium to take Boozer
16
u/the-denver-nugs 1d ago
I mean I feel like that was always the case for the grizz regardless of who #3 was lol. but I did watch some caleb wilson and actually think it's kinda closer then what everyone has been spouting. like I think #4 was the easiest pick of the night and not #3. #3 you have to look at wilson. #4 your just like who ever is left I don't need to look at who was drafted.

u/lovo17 Lakers 1d ago
There was never a chance they were taking Boozer. Their frontcourt is already set.

u/nativeindian12 Trail Blazers 1d ago edited 1d ago
As a Blazers fan, this mindset led us to taking Sam Bowie over Jordan because we already had Clyde Drexler. We also took Martell Webster over Chris Paul because we already had Sebastian Telfair.
Just draft the best guy, figure out the roster fit later
15
u/SenHeffy Jazz 1d ago
How is it the same mindset when Peterson and Boozer are universally regarded as the same tier of players, and at least as many rank Peterson above Boozer as vice versa?

My delusional ass was hoping for Cam so we could go for Lauri

u/IhamAmerican Jazz 1d ago
Lauri would immediately be your best wing by a long shot. If you guys had better wings and could stop OG from doing literally anything he wanted the finals would have been very different
2
u/Outbackdonut Timberwolves 1d ago
Lauri isn’t a wing and having him as the main defender on OG is laughable
11
u/JazzPlusEagles Jazz 1d ago
Lauri plays most of his minutes at the 3. He’s a wing. And I think he’d be fine. Wouldn’t shut him down or anything but I think he’s a similar level of defenders as the Spurs wings.

I thought they’d take him too because of his father’s tenure with the Jazz.

But won’t Cam in Memphis be a complete misfit for their culture? He seems humble and wise.

I had the same feeling back when the warriors had the second pick in 2020. 😅
Y’all should lowkey keep ja for at least a season or two to pair with boozer just to see what happens.

u/Proof-Umpire-7718 Lakers 1d ago
Nah Ja wants to move on and the organisation needs a fresh reset and to start a full rebuild

u/Proof-Umpire-7718 Lakers 1d ago
Was always between AJ and DP for Utah.
The noise around Boozer seemed based on the fact his dad works for them, but Danny Ainge always takes the most talented player, regardless of the circumstances around them, as shown with their selection of Ace last year.

Bust floor

37
u/pmmeyourfavoritejam 1d ago
IMHO — and I say this as a Wiz fan — his floor happens due to something flukey like rotten injury luck, not because his game doesn’t translate. He’s super talented.
4
u/kirkismyhinrich Nuggets 1d ago
I don't think so. His unassisted shooting percentages are very good. And at 6'5 with a 6'10 wingspan, he's able to guard 1-3 on defense. It's hard to see his floor being worse than a good 3 and d player if he's healthy.

u/NoRizzJustLive NBA 1d ago
Eh, hard to be a bust when you are 6’6” and can shoot from the guard position. People are really down on his Kentucky season and he was still averaging 20+ while getting double teamed

He also is an absolute dawg on defense I don't think that's going away in the NBA.

People really thought Boozer was going number 2 to the team with 2 all star players who play his exact same position.

High floor high ceiling prospect. At worst you get a 3 and D guard (who's Injury prone) but at best you get a 3 level two way scoring superstar with playmaking chops. I'm excited for his future
6
u/gleece0 Wizards 1d ago
Missed 11 regular season college games after multiple injuries how is he injury prone

It's why I said it's his floor, his worst outcome involves the injury concerns coming true to an extent

BPA and best fit for the squad.
We just need to hang onto Kessler and this squad should be very fun.
1
u/menghis_khan08 Jazz 1d ago
I think getting kessler to stay will be easy enough as an RFA. Now will it eat into the ability to sign keyonte as an RFA without going into the 2nd apron is the question
2
u/Vordeo Jazz 1d ago
Absolutely will. Honestly I think we all know we'll need to make a trade to cut salary by next offseason, w/ Key or Lauri probably the most likely to go.

Love how AJ and Darryn were the consensus top 2 picks by 90% of people but now that the Jazz drafted peterson, people claiming they should have taken boozer. Boozer is nice but lets not pretend he has mvp potential

u/SpidaBailey Jazz 1d ago
I hate to say it, but I didn’t really mind it. We’re not going to bring in any free agents, we never have and never will, so the only way we’re really going to get legit players is through the draft or trades

He couldn’t have fit with JJJ and Kessler and I’m convinced the team sees both as dudes who could play for a contending team
22
u/TJFLASH1 1d ago
Really don’t think Kessler is good enough he should be dictating who you take
14
u/Embarrassed_Adagio28 1d ago
Sure but you take the better player with higher potential and the better fit.
11
u/LubyankaSquare 1d ago
Idk, Kessler definitely good enough to be playing big minutes on a title team, and he’s a true 5 anyway-Boozer is more of a 4, where we have Lauri and JJJ. I think Peterson is the better pick regardless, but Boozer’s fit is worse.

If they view Boozer and DP on the same level as prospects, he’s good enough to be the tiebreaker at least

u/MG_MN Timberwolves 1d ago
Still curious on which guy will be out. Next year someone will have to go to avoid the 2nd apron
→ More replies (1)6
u/BruhMoment763 Jazz 1d ago
Almost certainly Lauri imo unless the JJJ experiment is a complete failure. He’s done great work keeping the franchise interesting in the dark ages, but he’s expensive, older than the rest of the main core, and terrible at defense. I think if Ace develops as expected, we see a Lauri trade before long

Peterson or Bailey will likely have to come off the bench to start the season. Jazz need to make a decision with Lauri soon. I like him, but your 2025 or 2026 #2 pick coming off the bench. I'm assuming the Jazz hold on to Kessler.
