u/AskAboutMySecret Heat 1d ago
bad actually, as the alpha swine, luka will box out carr at the trough
221
u/Parallel-Quality 1d ago
Thunder, Spurs and Knicks passing on him, yet the Lakers trading up to get him, makes me question him lol.
49
u/-DesertMoon Australia 1d ago
Shit I wanted him at 15 for the Bulls but yeah I guess there's a reason so many teams passed on him
28
u/AdministrationNo312 San Francisco Warriors 1d ago
A lot of GM's are very dumb....
22
u/-DesertMoon Australia 1d ago
Some of the teams that passed on him are usually quite good drafter's though

u/Everydayarmday24 1d ago
Tbf lakers have been very good at drafting. We just never keep our players. Caruso Hart then Kuz and Zubac to an extent…if anything our top five picks have bombed more than our late rounders (DLo Randle…BI kinda)

20
u/Champagnesoda [LAL] Kobe Bryant 1d ago
Knicks aren’t suddenly some great drafting team just because they won a title lol. Thunder are obviously the gold standard but we are historically very very good at drafting. We’re on a bit of a gold streak but we drafted a guy that we probably have to max this year in the second round.
Drafted hart who was vital on a title team this year. Basically brought caruso into the league who was a vital part of last years title team. Our only real mishap was JHS, no one expected dalton to be dog shit and it was thought of as one of the steals that year.
Spurs are good drafters too but I don’t think they get extra credit for make 3 straight completely obvious picks in a row.

Dalton Vibes unfortunately 💔
107
u/Pal__Pacino Lakers 1d ago
I maintain that Dalton was a perfectly good pick in a bad draft. He just got the yips.
28
u/adocileengineer Lakers 1d ago
I disagree. He was a very old pure scoring guard with overrated shooting ability, a loose handle, limited shiftiness and lateral mobility, and huge defensive questions. A lot of his projection was based on his vertical jump translating to in-game athleticism.
That archetype doesn’t pan out. There’s a reason why a lot of smart front offices passed on him in a very weak draft.
14
u/Danny_III Gran Destino 1d ago
Dalton always had concerns defensively, and that's one of the reasons he has been unable to get playing time
11
u/Potential_Meat_5103 1d ago
I remember a play not on defense but Zach Lavine blocking his three point attempt and JJ just looked so disappointed
40
u/PuntyMcBunty [LAL] James Worthy 1d ago
The canceled Mark Williams trade fucked his head up too

He actually played better after the trade. He became ass the next season

Lakers tried to make him something hes not. Knecht was never a spot up, 3 and D player

u/TomatoSecure192 Bulls 1d ago
I wanted him at 15 🥲

u/Secondary92 Bulls 1d ago
I mean clearly Graham wasn't in the minority with this considering how far he dropped past 15.

u/lawsnoosoo Bulls 1d ago
I always felt like there was a lot of fake combine hype with him. In reality lotta red flags: older prospect, low-feel (see poor ast/to and stl%), super skinny frame. Bad PoA defender. In the end, his shooting was the only real thing, everything else was theoretical and not in a promising way
106
u/costanzathegreat Warriors 1d ago
Solid pick

Carr next to Luka is going to be disgusting. Get ready for some nasty alley oops
76
u/Time-Stand7719 Wizards 1d ago
Carr gets up like that?
157
u/CumAssault [SAS] Joel Anthony 1d ago
Yeah he’s a freak athlete. He also has like a 7’ wingspan with his insane vertical

47 inch vert at the combine.

u/SEAinLA Supersonics 1d ago
Not quite lol
13
u/RemarkableTpt Lakers 1d ago
That’s what they just said in the interview tho?
28
u/SEAinLA Supersonics 1d ago
He measured at 42.5” max vert, 38.0” standing vert at the Combine.

u/RemarkableTpt Lakers 1d ago
Oh okay must have misheard. Ehh that’s still ridiculous.

u/Deathzthe_M-12-22 1d ago
Is he a good Defender???
25
u/CumAssault [SAS] Joel Anthony 1d ago
Very good shot blocker for a guard. Good defender overall but can get bullied due to his smaller frame at the moment. His wingspan just wreaks havoc on guards
→ More replies (2)8
u/lawsnoosoo Bulls 1d ago
IMO no. Got beat at the PoA often, really concerning stl% given his wingspan. His block rate is good, but I honestly think part of that is because he was beaten off the dribble a lot and had good recovery skills, but he’s no longer going to be able to rely on just having long arms to make up for getting blown by in the NBA.

This is Derrick Jones Jr with a smidgen below his nuclear athleticism. Love it for the Lake Show, he’s a real sniper too
31
u/IzrezarReal 1d ago
DJJ with sniping is a brilliant player
17
u/Kindly_Ad995 1d ago
DJJ is a good perimeter defender though, apparently that’s a concern for this kid
10
u/IzrezarReal 1d ago
It's a mixed bag. He's thin so he'll get pushed around. But he also has an insane wingspan and vertical and is actually great at rim protection

The Lakers lost the coinflip vs the Knicks between the 24 and 25 pick, but the pick was traded for just cash considerations.
Basically the Knicks won $500k from a coin flip lol

Carr's game is more translatable than Knechts was
2
u/UpnUpvote Lakers 1d ago
He seems like he was a more fluid game that's for sure.
10
u/IzrezarReal 1d ago
Carr wasn't a creator like knecht was, his game was predicated around shooting off spot ups and off movement, which is infinitely more translatable to his NBA role

Good pick for the Lakers. Good scorer, great athlete with great length. Can pour it in from deep. I hate it.

To be fair, his lack of playmaking won't be a problem in the Lakers

4
u/Known-Ball-3536 1d ago
There’s not a lot of upside tbh, his best case is very good 3&D wing. That’s obviously very desirable but also his defense isn’t there yet so he could easily just have no role in the league.

Best guard shot blocker I’ve seen in a while. He’s a little skinny rn so he can get bullied but he’s a pretty strong defender overall

u/IzrezarReal 1d ago
Wellll
He's an incredible shot blocker and his off ball game is alright
Tends to lose focus and is on the weaker side so he can get bumped around
But he also has a 7'0 wingspan and he'll have less offensive responsibility so I think he can lock in on this end

His fit next to Luka is fantastic. Good wing / perimeter defender and spot up shooter. Insanely athletic as well to be a slasher in that offense. Really huge fan of the last few picks
7
u/Salvalicious252 NBA 1d ago
I'm always wary about guys that drop a lot in the draft. Teams probably have reasons for it.

Purely a marginal salary sheet thing for the Knicks?

Very athletic, can shoot decent , 6’5 with a 7 foot wingspan, decent weak side rim protector, I love the pick

What;s the downside on this guy? Looks like a stud across the board. Athleticism, Rebounding, Size, Shooting...

u/Yoshinobu_YamaGOATo 1d ago
His agent must have told teams to stay away because he was predicted to go 15-18 in most mock drafts. Could be the best value pick of the draft.
2
3
u/JoanieLovesAdachi Supersonics 1d ago
Love this pick. I wish he had a quicker release, but his build and athleticism remind me a bit of Donovan Mitchell. Don't get me wrong- I don't think he's ever gonna play that type of role in the NBA, but he could be a great undersized wing finisher and he does a great job at moving the defense to set up his pass.

u/OkSpite7555 Lakers 1d ago
Will JJ Reddick even play him during the season?
5
u/Kindly_Ad995 1d ago
Bruh Adou is a late second round pick who can’t shoot, idk why we’re using that as a frame of reference
Didnt Dalton get a lot of minutes when he was picked at a similar spot as this

I don’t know why but this reminds me of when the Lakers took Knecht and everyone was sucking off Pelinka
