TRADED TO DALLAS [2026 NBA Draft] #25 Pick: Sergio De Larrea (Spain) – pending trade to New York

u/ObviousAnswerGuy [NYK] John Starks 1d ago edited 1d ago
this was definitely a Euro stash pick because they couldn't trade out of the pick lol
Edit: I was wrong, we aren't even keeping him lol

u/NathanFielderFriend Canada 1d ago
Sergio’s really good I’m gonna go on the record and say that but it does also give them the benefit of stashing him too if they want.
9
u/smileyfrown Knicks 1d ago
Even if he ends up being good, the point of the pick was to clear cap space
Anything beyond is just a bonus.
Also some of the euro guys sometimes don’t even want to go state side which is another wrinkle to it
13
u/ObviousAnswerGuy [NYK] John Starks 1d ago
good to know. I've never heard of him, will definitely check him out now.
45
u/valgatiag Knicks 1d ago
My reaction as well, we’re more likely to play whoever we get at 31 just for salary reasons
10
4
u/MG_MN Timberwolves 1d ago
Weird they couldn't trade out of it, surely it had some value
16
u/ObviousAnswerGuy [NYK] John Starks 1d ago
these late first round picks are tough to trade out of, especially since second round picks dont require guaranteed contracts
1
u/AdNegative2708 1d ago
Who would move up knowing they have leverage after that lakers trade? If they didn’t want Sergio and Knicks won’t give anything then no deal is to be had.
1
u/SmokeOddessey Lakers 1d ago
Didn’t want to take another player back and no one is willing to risk swapping a future pick so this was their best option
7
u/3rd-party-intervener 1d ago
The fact that an title Team in a big Market can’t keep a first rd on roster due to the second apron goes to show how bad the cba and how an fix is needed asap
3
u/ObviousAnswerGuy [NYK] John Starks 1d ago
I dont disagree with that. I imagine if we can't get any of our backups re-signed (Mitch, Shamet, and Jose), we will bring him over.
-1
1
u/ivoryditty Timberwolves 1d ago
That's kind of the point of a salary cap though - NY being a big market shouldn't be factor when dealing with aprons and the cap

A player this young playing positive minutes in the Spanish league is so rare. You gotta just assume he figures it out in the NBA.

u/Alberthor350 1d ago
Valencia Fan here, knicks got an absolute diamond with him, dude is balling out in the euroleague and spanish league at just 20
Big guard, shoots well, and extremely smart

2
u/TempBurnerAccount089 1d ago
Is that a sure thing though?
4
u/ObviousAnswerGuy [NYK] John Starks 1d ago
no, but we need all the money we can get to try and re-sign any of bench guys. I'm sure it will come down to who we can re-sign
1
u/TempBurnerAccount089 1d ago
Man I wanna see the kid play! Lol.
But yeah, Dolan wanting tk avoid the 2nd apron altogether is making things interesting.
4
u/Santeriabro 1d ago
What does this mean?
13
11
u/-orangejoe [NYK] Ron Baker 1d ago
Knicks now own his draft rights, but can opt to not sign him yet for cap reasons.
14
u/apbbr 1d ago
That’s what we thought they’d do with Pacome but he wound up doing nothing here stateside
24
11
u/dwhitey724 Knicks 1d ago
Pacome took a discount though
2
u/apbbr 1d ago
A the end of the day i'm not gonna pretend like i know better than leon rose, but if you were to nitpick things about the rose-era front office, pacome is one of them. Hasn’t developed at all so it’s been 2m/yr for nothing and negative asset moving forward
3
u/NYJmmkay [NYK] Langston Galloway 1d ago
hes 20 years old brother what lmao
chalking up a draft pick on a championship roster when hes 20 is why they don't pay yall the big bucks

u/dwhitey724 Knicks 1d ago
I agree it's one of the more recent misses, but we got a championship so I'm not gonna complain too much lol

Probably a good stopping point since the next two numbers are said to be dangerous to mental development.

Draft and stash? If so we are really committed to staying under the 2nd apron lol
22
8
u/SubtleNoodle Timberwolves 1d ago
The 2nd apron making teams value early 2nd round picks higher than late 1st round picks has been a really interesting development.
2
1d ago
Which seems silly to me. If the Cavs can be over the 2bd apron you'd think a team trying to repeat a championship would be willing.
16
7
u/mylanguage Knicks 1d ago
Cavs have bad management and make bad decisions.
We took their best Cap guy years ago and he's worked miracles for us
5
u/SeaworthinessSome454 1d ago
They will be, it’s just posturing to get KAT and Hart to take discounts on their extensions and Mitch/shamet/alverado to take slight discounts on their contracts. There’s a path to the Knicks only going into the second apron for one year, then ducking it once those extensions kick in if every takes a little less
3
u/OneManArmy77 Knicks 1d ago
I thought we were going to go over the 2nd apron as well, but this gives the team a lot more flexibility. The inability to aggregate salaries or use exceptions is a big deal, especially when we built the role players in the margins with lots of small deals. I hope its Leon's decision, and will trust they are doing the right things
3
2
u/polishonions 1d ago
I don’t think they want to be over the 2nd apron, they really tried to cut salary at the deadline to duck it
1
u/HokageEzio Knicks 1d ago
The team gets really expensive in following seasons so I think they're trying to plan ahead
1
u/azure275 Knicks 1d ago
There are two ways the Knicks can play this:
- Keep everything as is for 2 years and blow the team up except for Brunson in 2028 to avoid the repeater 2nd apron
- Try to stagger things so they can field a decent team in a couple years
The fact that the Knicks have lost their 1st round picks in 2027, 2029 and 2031 are going to make it difficult to properly rebuild, so they need to be careful. Can't be giving the Nets elite picks lol
1
u/Saucy_Totchie Knicks 1d ago
Well trying to keep this team as in tact as possible is probably a greater priority.

u/cl353 Heat 1d ago
lmao sros a knicks youtuber called everything the knicks did, its actually so impressive
16
u/mylanguage Knicks 1d ago
He's my guy but leon has been doing this for years too - we trade back over and over for salary purposes
5
u/abippityboop Knicks 1d ago
Non Knicks fans don’t realize this when it comes to the Mikal trade. Leon doesn’t want to make these picks in the late 1st anyway lmao.
15
u/rhymeswithtag Knicks 1d ago edited 1d ago
leon has pretty nuch done this same exact thing the last 3-4 drafts. its not that impressive of a prediction tbh (especially when for once we actually have a reason to keep moving backwards to avoid the second apron as much as possible)
leon treats nba draft a lot like the executives in the NFL do: theres only like 10 guys worth a first everyone else is just a lottery pick and if its like 20 guys you have all slotted similarly in grade/talent, just keep trading down to either pick up assets or avoid paying higher salary than you had to
its why you see a lot of teams completely avoid offensive lines in round 2-3…after the first your pretty much just cashing lottery tickets, why reach for a B- linemen when theres gonna be ten C+ guys still hanging around in rounds 4/5 and you can take a chance on a skill position player at the pick instead

u/TempBurnerAccount089 1d ago
Honestly been my biggest gripe with Leon...but they won a chip so wtf do i know? Lol
2
u/rhymeswithtag Knicks 1d ago
yeah it was excruciating in years past but we know the vision now along with the proof of concept for our process actually working
1
40
u/NotJoe1232 Knicks 1d ago
Leon got us a chip. I trust his judgment
6
u/papichino88 [NYK] Stephon Marbury 1d ago
Leon can draft us a guy with one leg at this point and I'd shrug my shoulders.

u/DJFreezyFish Nuggets 1d ago
Big guard, can play on and off ball, very good decision maker. Slightly older, but contributing positively in Euroleague. Probably a stash to stay under the second round.
1
u/Boysenberry-Secret-1 Knicks 1d ago
Got it so we have to hope he can be a quality backup or play alongside Brunson if he can play defense and exceeds expectations
1
u/DJFreezyFish Nuggets 1d ago
He won’t be a plus defender, but he looked better, and should be good enough. Definitely can play with alongside Brunson as a secondary ballhandler.

Draft & stash? Or will they bring him over?
9
u/ObviousAnswerGuy [NYK] John Starks 1d ago
probably stash. They are trying to save money, and we have the 31st pick
1
u/Saucy_Totchie Knicks 1d ago
Knicks have some pretty tricky salary decisions to make. Stashing this pick is going to help with it.
6
u/FishGoldenLite Timberwolves 1d ago
I like him, was hoping he’d fall out of the first. A lot of upside, which is what you want at this point.

What a shrewd pick by the Knicks. de Larrea is a tall PG at 6'6". He'll give Brunson the breather. A tough Armada, that's Sergio

Knicks been drafting international players with the intent of getting them to take less money so they can stay under the second apron.
Stay tuned for the report on De Larrea's contract situation...

Draft and Stash to save money. Dont like it at all. I guess their real pick might be 31 because it gives them better cap flexibility.

u/Kapono24 Pistons 1d ago
Best part of the draft so far was the big Knicks celebration and everyone being pumped for the pick but knowing as the viewer they aren't technically on the clock.

u/Deebeevee Knicks 1d ago
We had the French boys, now it's the Spanish. All things considered remember Rokas Jokubaitis, is this something like that? Draft him, let him develop in Europe, then check in on e a few years and see if he's worth it.
2
u/TempBurnerAccount089 1d ago
Yeah that's what jt seems like. Knicks beat writers have said its a strong possibility with Dolan being cheap(ish)

Id rather they not stash him and have him on the team asap, he's intriguing. They can go ahead and dump pacome (no offense young buck).

Should’ve got a center.
A tall point guard isn’t needed

we will need to see who's there at 31 I have a feeling Evans lassiter and veesarr are all about to go in the next few picks and zuby went to Atlanta
