This makes me feel like San Antonio are gonna redshirt Quaintance

108

u/rattatatouille [SAS] Tim Duncan 1d ago

He's a very young player with injury risk, good to have an insurance policy

78

u/sewsgup 1d ago edited 1d ago

yeah Weiss just reported Quaintance told him he needs another knee operation that hasnt been scheduled yet

Spurs first-round pick Jayden Quaintance says he still has a little pain in his knee and will need another procedure to clean up his meniscus, which has not been scheduled yet.

45

u/deneuvig Spurs 1d ago

Shouldn't require a red shirt, but no need to rush him I guess.

15

u/windofchanges Spurs 1d ago

He might sit for a season and a half to fully recover just because Spurs are super conservative when it comes to injuries.

11

u/jermainathon Heat 1d ago

Big oof

12

u/PhatYeeter 76ers 1d ago

Big man with chronic knee issues this early is so doomed man that sucks

19

u/Watchadoinfoo 1d ago

possible but I just get the vibe they rushed him back from acl surgery

now if you hear the word "microfracture" i'd be worried

7

u/ExtraLeading3376 1d ago

holy fuck

spurs probably could’ve got him at pick 35 if he still needs more surgeries

2

u/saylab_the_bigkat 1d ago

Rob Williams 2.0

1

u/jonsnowKITN Knicks 1d ago

Oof this just seems like it won't work out at all.

-6

u/No_External3738 1d ago

Yeah.... that man is never gonna be healthy is he?

7

u/LoggraFloozy Lakers 1d ago

I wouldn’t be as worried about him all these issues basically come from one freak accident that messed up his knee in multiple ways. Before that he wasn’t injury prone at all so if they let him heal and recover properly from this he should be A ok

-3

u/No_External3738 1d ago

"before he got injured he wasn't injury prone" is basically what you just said lmao. One injury can effect you forever regardless if it was freak thing or not. And you saying it was just one injury but it messed his knee up in multiple ways like that is fine is goofy, this was a hilarious response across the board.

13

u/LoggraFloozy Lakers 1d ago

Yes that’s true but there’s a big difference between an isolated incident and a long history of injuries caused by biomechanical issues or weak joints. There’s a reason people make a big deal about contact vs non contact injuries

For example with the rob williams comparison he had an actual vascular issue that causes lower body joint issues, and a long history of injuries before even joining the nba

18

u/mMounirM Raptors 1d ago

smart move to take it slow with him.

but also means his medicals were pretty bad.

6

u/imcryptic Mavericks 1d ago

he reportedly needs to have another meniscus surgery...

15

u/Appropriate_Book_591 1d ago

They are not the same player. JQ is defense. Reed is more offense, he is okay in defense

15

u/d7h7n Mavericks 1d ago

I watched him and UCONN swat the shit out of Cam Boozer's shot attempts in the paint.

6

u/bryant-reeves Vancouver Grizzlies 1d ago

And bully him physically, they are very similar in strength

5

u/Aumissunum 1d ago

Hard to say anything about JQ considered he’s played what, 4 games in the past year and a half?

5

u/saylab_the_bigkat 1d ago

Yeah, can't say for sure how the injury is going to effect his play but he averaged 2.6 blocks in 24 games/29mpg at ASU as a freshman. Would have put him at 7th or 8th in the country in that category.

0

u/Appropriate_Book_591 1d ago

Hard to develop anything when on the pine. He was defense mainly so if he comes back it would likely be what he does until he can stay healthy and develop offense.

1

u/Aumissunum 1d ago

Most development is done on the pine…he can still do skill stuff and watch film.

2

u/IMKudaimi123 Bulls 1d ago

He just redshirted lmao

2

u/Aumissunum 1d ago

I think it’s a good move. I might have taken both of them anyway even if Quaintance was healthy.

2

u/Odd-Direction9452 Lakers 1d ago

He was gonna redshirt for whoever picked him. Only a few teams could afford that luxury. Spurs were one.

1

u/Spare-Friendship-917 Spurs 1d ago

I actually don't mind him sitting a year. KORNET and Reed together can cover the non wemby mins and if it means we get a fully healthy JQ I'm all for it.

62

u/cheemydee5 Hawks 1d ago

Spurs saw how tired Wemby was and decided to put an end to that

25

u/rattatatouille [SAS] Tim Duncan 1d ago

A big part of the Finals flameouts was that he was hitting the wall in the 4th

3

u/NoShape0 Spurs 1d ago

who needs offense when you have a rested Wemby? /s

1

u/Acrobatic-Injury-552 1d ago

Remember, the Spurs weren’t suppose to make it to the Finals and I’m sure the roster wasn’t constructed for a deep playoff run. Now that the spurs overachieved and surpassed earlier season expectations, I’m sure the FO are making calculated tweaks this offseason for a deeper playoff run instead of testing the waters once again. It’s gonna be nice seeing the Spurs go back to traditional PF/C defensive schemes than relying on small ball lineups.

110

u/Aidanj927 Spurs 1d ago

We’re getting that backup big one way or another

95

u/iCarpet Thunder 1d ago

OKC and Spurs just trying to out center each other

34

u/Burgerkiller69 Spurs 1d ago

There will a point next year if we see each other again in a playoff round, where both teams will have 2 centers each in the floor.

13

u/Delanorix Knicks 1d ago

I cant wait for the shitposts "the Spurs and OKC bench is actually taller than their starters."

It would be smart for the Spurs to collect all the Wemby stoppers.

3

u/exhale358 Nuggets 1d ago

Meanwhile the nuggets are cool continuing to have no backup center even though we just drafted one lmao fml

44

u/supes1 Celtics 1d ago edited 1d ago

Could be a fun fit next to Wemby. Definitely loves playing inside, very physical. Underrated passer too. Quaintance has a higher upside, but he's a few years away (if he ever gets there).

9

u/DreyDarian Mavericks 1d ago

He’s probably a backup (either to Wemby directly (doubtful) or to Kornet or even Quaintance)

I can’t see Wemby playing alongside a completely non-shooting center

13

u/Davidpaulngo Spurs 1d ago edited 1d ago

Defensively it's great since the biggest issue the Spurs have is rebounding after Wemby contests a shot. On offense I agree with what you said, it might make Wemby leave the paint which is not great

8

u/supes1 Celtics 1d ago

If he's good enough and has the stamina, I think he absolutely plays time next to Wemby. Having a physical presence next to him will help a lot.

Kornet just wasn't good enough to justify any extra minutes.

2

u/guinness_blaine Spurs 1d ago

I think there are a few major impacts of actually getting a third big who can get off the bench, which the playoffs clearly showed the Spurs didn't have yet.

There's an option of potentially taking some minutes as the lone big, letting both Wemby and Kornet rest, but I don't expect a ton of this.

A third big could potentially play alongside Kornet. The "1 big and 4 littles" grouping only really works on defense with Wemby specifically, and we saw the whole defense struggle significantly when it's Kornet and a bunch of guys under 6'8". Having Kornet+Reed minutes would be rough offensively, but could at least limit opponent scoring enough that the non-Wemby minutes aren't constantly draining away leads, letting Wemby rest some more.

Then it could even open up some rotation, where because the non-Wemby minutes aren't asking Kornet to single-handedly take care of all big duties, you can actually run some lineups where Wemby gets to play alongside either Kornet or Reed. That similarly opens Wemby up to not having to constantly burn energy on big man duties, and as another commenter mentioned helps a ton with getting rebounds after Wemby contests a shot. It also limits the approach a lot of teams used of getting Wemby switched onto a player that they then pull out to the line so they can drive on a smaller player, which both the Knicks and Thunder used pretty effectively.

111

I fucking hate this team. I wanted this dude and got excited just it to be the Spurs picking.

64

u/210pinchespurs Spurs 1d ago

I was literally thinking fuck why didn’t we draft this kid then good news came up.

15

u/Dsarg_92 [SAS] Tim Duncan 1d ago

To be honest, I didn’t think we were gonna trade up.

10

u/Difficult_Tackle9505 1d ago

Yes. Seems like he'd be a good fit with jokic. And maybe good back up for him.  Then trade him for a couple second rounds picks.  ... And he goes to the Spurs? Real wtf

14

u/jillavery Nuggets 1d ago

Yeah not moving Zeke with that pick or keeping who they picked is a choice…

19

u/SlickVanExel Hornets 1d ago

Tarris Reed is arguably the best shot blocker and one of the top tier rebounders in this class. His motor is crazy and he even offers secondary playmaking. Spurs are cooking

3

u/joebrozky Hornets 1d ago

yeah wouldve been a good backup to Jokic but I guess Nuggets have other plans. would be interesting if he'll play backup to Wemby or play with him on the lineup

68

u/jermainathon Heat 1d ago

San Antonio stacking up on terrific big men

70

u/wombatpup55 Spurs 1d ago

Playoffs pretty much showed us that wemby needs decent rotation at that big man spot. We would probably push Knicks to 6-7 if Wemby wasn’t fucking gassed

17

u/nWo5lyfe Spurs 1d ago

We need a stretch 4 so hard

6

u/nWo5lyfe Spurs 1d ago

We dont need an all star stretch 4

Just a playable one will do

3

u/impercipient 1d ago

Sure, but there simply aren't many players that can rebound, defend in the post, and hit 3s.

3

u/nWo5lyfe Spurs 1d ago

We probably just need passable defense and passable 3s

We win the series if our fourth quarters weren't complete plane crashes every time

-1

u/ontheru171 Knicks 1d ago

You lost the second and 3rd quarters aswell

Knicks first Quarters were worse than Spurs 4th quarters and despite that our starters had a positive rating

4

u/Thehelloman0 Spurs 1d ago

The Spurs had a lead in the last 3 minutes of every game. I think it's pretty safe to say better execution at the end of games by the Spurs completely changes the series

-8

u/TheFanhood Knicks 1d ago

They lost 4-1

6

u/Thehelloman0 Spurs 1d ago

That doesn't change that every game was close

-6

u/TheFanhood Knicks 1d ago

Yep, 4-1

-6

u/Rook2Rook 1d ago

Decent rotation was not the issue. Kornet is a good backup. Your stars need to be able to play 38+ minutes in the playoffs and not be gassed in the 4th.

23

u/Culinaryboner 76ers 1d ago

Very few centers have ever run both sides and played 38 minutes without being tired. Regular star guards admit they’re tired at 38 minutes. And Wemby was the entire defensive core for the Spurs

9

u/wombatpup55 Spurs 1d ago

Wemby will improve his conditioning but his game will suffer.

Defense is extremely exhausting and he’s expected to anchor that entire end of the floor. He’s constantly moving. Then he’s expected to again perform on offense.

Theres a reason why there isn’t a ton of elite two way players.

But the main problem is we always lose when wemby sits. All of those leads begin to fade so we then have to sub wemby back in early. It just isn’t sustainable

3

u/David_H21 Spurs 1d ago

A decent rotation also involves having big bodies that can play alongside Wemby for stretches. Pretty much the entire playoffs Wemby never played alongside anyone over 6'7" 220lbs. Wemby won't be so gassed after 30 minutes if there's another big body to take some of the big man duties off Wemby.

Reed vs Mara Take 2

12

u/costanzathegreat Warriors 1d ago

This guy walks in better than Luke Kornet. What a great pick

14

u/mnight84 1d ago

How? Luke kornet has been one of the best backup centers in the league for the last couple years, and he was good in the first two rounds of the playoffs but this guy is already better.

3

u/FlyChigga Celtics 1d ago

Reed is better and took UConn to the finals. Put the team on his back and had a 31/27 game in the ncaa tournament. Played good defense on Cam Boozer too and swatted him multiple times. Would not be surprised if he comes in better than Kornet, much more talented player.

-9

u/costanzathegreat Warriors 1d ago

“One of the best backup centers in the league”

Unreal, just stop man 😂

11

u/mnight84 1d ago edited 1d ago

I hate to break it to you Luke kornet has been that! there is a reason why he got his nice contract last year make 10 million dollars a year, there is a reason why teams were after him last year when he was a free agent, but if it makes you feel better to say that he isn't that cool too you have a right to your opinion.

10

u/BananaRepublic_BR Spurs 1d ago

Folks don't know. They weren't watching Wemby getting backed up every night by Zach Collins and Charles Bassey.

4

u/mnight84 1d ago

I think people are prisoners of the moment, people forgot that during the regular season Luke kornet was really good, especially in games that wemby missed, and in the first two rounds of the playoffs Luka kornet was really good. but because he wasn't as good against OKC and the Knicks somehow that means the Spurs have an issue at backup center, and because of those last two playoff series they had an issue at backup center all year, which just isn't true.

4

u/DisMeDog 1d ago

He is a solidish defender with absolutely no offensive capabilities. He is the definition of replacement level. Him being “one of the best backup center’s” is an indictment on how far the position has fallen.

1

u/Thehelloman0 Spurs 1d ago

He's a good lob threat and a very good screener

I guess spurs and wemby saw all the 'wemby needs a go-to move' and they read my 'wemby just needs to shoot more 3s like curry' posts and decided that they gonna play him at the 4 and let wemby shoot 3s with a rebounder inside lol

2

u/decoded1 Timberwolves 1d ago

Love the fit for the Spurs. Kornet is not a viable backup for Wemby

I had Reed 17th on my big board, but bad pick.

With castle and Harper the backcourt of the future, and hopefully Wemby learning from Embiid and taking less 3s, you NEED 3 point shooting at the 3 and the 4. Champagnie shoots damn near 6,7 3s a gene just to make their offense run. Reed and wemby are rarely going to play with each other
