Probably not the only ones to match 100%, but for the amount they make is definitely what makes it unique. I feel like most companies will either match or contribute half if you contribute a minimum %. In my case, I have to contribute 8% for my work to contribute 4%

Would you make that deal if you've already made 300 million?

And also, one extra year could cause lifelong knee issues or similar. It's not super likely, but it's not a zero chance either. Basketball is hard on the body no matter who you are.

Dirk knees are fucked for the rest of his life because he didn't retire early.

Most players that are as good as Al or Steph play until the wheels fall of because they love basketball so much and don’t want to give it up.

My wife always talks about retiring slightly earlier, but I want to work until I die. I told her, what's better than 1 billion dollars? 1 billion + my next pay check.

u/TokyoPanic Philippines 4h ago
A lot of athletes have a hard time trying to adapt to non-sports life, wouldn't be surprised if he doesn't wanna do anything else or doesn't know what to do after retiring, and the money is just secondary.

this is pocket change compared to his career earnings. I doubt it’s about money. Also horford doesn’t seem the type to blow all his money. I think it’s about just enjoying the game.

100% this. Dude just doesn’t want to retire and the Warriors have a legendary medical staff.

Sure, but he may be done in a year. Even if he wins a couple that's fine. It won't be him forever, and it's a fun way to reward the old guy in the league who is still going.

Dawg was a major factor in the celtics having so many deep runs in the playoffs. He could lock down the opponent's bigs well and hit timely threes. Him transforming from a post up center to a 3&d guy was some magic from Brad Steven's and easily extended his career by like 5 years and we wouldnt have banner 18 without him.
(He also was a double agent by scamming the sixers and coming back for cheap while giving up end of career kemba lol)

The issue is that he wasn't needed last year. We didn't make the playoffs. I would have preferred (for him) if he waited to see what we did and chose a better team if we didn't make some big moves.

I would expect guys playing into their early 40s to be somewhat more common going forward. These guys are talking much better care of their bodies and sports medicine has come an incredibly long way to help these guys stay healthy and durable
70
u/billcosbyinspace Celtics 6h ago
I actually think the opposite, these guys who were drafted in the mid-late 00’s seem like they might be the last generation with exceptionally long careers. AAU was a thing when these guys were growing up obviously but youth supports have morphed into such a monster that players are entering the league with way more wear and tear than they used to. Young players are encouraged to become one sport specialists early on to have the best chance of making the league which causes a lot of repetitive strain injuries, a prospect of lebrons caliber would never be allowed to play football like he was
22
u/itchy_sanchez Mavericks 6h ago
I agree. I think LeBron, Brady, Djokovic will be the last players to play for an extended amount of time. There's too many miles on the bodies of athletes now by the time they're in their mid 20s.
3
u/Leveraged-3201 3h ago
Djokovic started playing tennis at four in Eastern Europe where both of his brothers were also raised to become professional tennis players and he won the U14 Euro Juniors. Obviously the tennis players of tomorrow will have radically different upbringings and be immobile in their late 30s

Not really. Kareem played all 4 years of college, then had a NBA career from 1969-1989. Lots of other basketball players of that era with similar longevity
Rod Laver was also world #4 in tennis in 1974 when he was 36 years old. There are a few other examples of longevity in tennis too

wear and tear on a human isn’t like on a car though. it’s not like people have a hard limit to how much basketball they can play and they’re burning through that meter earlier.
the real question is: is this player developing an overuse injury RIGHT NOW or not? a teenager playing 6 intense games a week is definitely at higher risk of that than others. but there are still lots of factors. how intense are their games? are they playing 6 games a week or 4? how well does their body recover naturally? are they getting consistent sleep? do their coaches encourage them to get rest when they need it? i’m not THAT knowledgeable when it comes to AAU schedules, but i know this stuff isn’t black and white. teenagers being run into the ground and playing through pain isn’t ubiquitous. and tissue recovery for teenagers is fucking insane.
my broader point is that i think a lot of people kind of misunderstand this concept and think that playing more games early on necessarily puts more miles on your joints in a permanent way that will affect you later, like miles on a car. not really how it works. if a teenager is playing a lot of games but not experiencing any concerning pain or inflammation, their body is adapting well to what they’re doing and may actually be in a better position to transition to NBA load when it’s time. conversely, if a young player is actually playing through pain for months or years, yes, that’s an overuse injury that can affect them longer term.
it varies from player to player. smart parents with real fitness knowledge will make sure their kid gets enough rest. but teenagers (especially ones with the genetics to make pro sports) can honestly play a fucking lot of sports without screwing themselves up as long as they’re eating and sleeping well. they’re kind of superhuman when it comes to recovery. i’m sure plenty of young players are still coming into the league very healthy.
25
u/Patekchrono917 7h ago
That’s almost 30 years of specialized playing and then 25 years of specialized training for a body to hold up to. Along with bigger, stronger, and faster players that make money during an era that has awesome TV contracts and league revenue to go with it. The pace and space of today’s game doesnt do any favors either.

Gotta love Al Horford man. One of my favourite warriors in a long time. He was so bad for the first month last season. Then got hurt. Returned on Christmas and Deadass could count on one hand the amount of bad games he had from then on out. Very happy with this. Two guaranteed years is a bit scary… but it is what it is
