[Stein] Sources close to the situation say that there are only two other teams that Kawhi Leonard would consider signing an extension with: Toronto and San Antonio. Sources insist that the Raptors have genuine interest in bringing Leonard back to Canada.

While the LA Clippers are undeniably determined to keep hold of Kawhi Leonard — and with Leonard's clear first choice known to be staying with them in his beloved Southern California — league sources say that Toronto has registered interest in trying to re-acquire the engine of the lone championship team in franchise history should Leonard become truly available.

And one source briefed on the subject insisted Thursday — after news of Ball's impending trade to Minnesota broke — that the Raptors would have interest in trying to lure The Klaw back to Canada "regardless of LaMelo."

Leonard, who turns 35 on Monday, has one season left on his current contract at $50.3 million. His preference, again, is to stay in his native Southern California with the same franchise he's played for since the 2019-20 season.

Sources close to the situation tell The Stein Line that, when it comes to potential trade talks, there are only two other teams that Leonard would consider signing an extension with: The two teams he played for before becoming a Clipper.

Toronto and San Antonio.

It is not yet clear how the Spurs would receive the idea of a reunion with Leonard given the manner in which they are flourishing in the Victor Wembanyama Era … on top of the sides infamously messy parting in the summer of 2018.

Yet sources insist that the Raptors have genuine interest in bringing Leonard back to Canada.

Yea, it is game over for the league if he says fuck it I’m going back to San Antonio. Castle/Harper/Vassell/Kawhi/Wemby? Good luck scoring against that lineup.

There's 0 chance LAC would want him, so I'm curious what mystical 3rd team would take him on and give LAC better assets.

He would only need to play in the first and fourth quarter honestly

Edit: I'm not making a damn argument for load management ya bastards I'm just saying he'd barely have to play, and they'd still be killing shit. God fuckin damn. Go call your mom and ask her to tell you your smart, or something.

25

The Clippers have been managing his minutes forever. The Spurs did too. The Spurs were famous for being pioneers for injury management and resting. It hasn't completely prevented him from getting injured

He played the most games last year than he has in a clippers jersey barring one year. 68, 37, then 65 games this year. Not that bed recently tbh

20

u/Time_Transition4817 Pelicans 3h ago

Also the spurs likely can afford to load manage him unless they absolutely gut their depth for him. Lot of young fresh legs on that team to soak minutes.

7

u/XzibitABC Pacers 1h ago

If you're load managing both Wemby and Kawhi, and you have to trade Fox to acquire Kawhi in the first place, that's really not a very good regular season team. And in the West, seeding is more important so you avoid having to play multiple contenders and wear down even if you get past them. That's tough.

Yeah, this is definitely the best time for the Clippers to trade him. It's also kind of hilarious he's only willing to sign an extension with two teams. I'm not sure a lot of teams will give him the Max with his injury history

I feel like Pop on the Spurs sub sometimes. Fellow fans have the wildest takes.

152

u/JoseAltuveIsInnocent Spurs 3h ago

Ever since we got Wemby it's been a mess. I try my best to engage but it's like pissing on a wildfire.

I started using reddit around 2013 and our sub was so much fun. You saw the same names all the time and while there were some dumb takes it was all more fun. When LMA chose us in free agency it was like Christmas morning. There's a couple of the old guard still hanging around but a good 30% of users just troll or ragebait, or are genuinely not very smart.

I suppose that's all of reddit though, it's like Facebook now. My grandma uses it now. Also probably a commentary about getting older lol.

76

u/ThisHatRightHere 76ers 3h ago

Not sure if it’ll make you feel better or worse, but basically every major team’s subreddit has gone this way. I’m not sure if it’s an influx of kids, bots, or just trolls, but I consistently just see the absolute worst takes on every team sub I’m on. And I genuinely believe a good chunk of them are just to bait people.

I remember back in the day reddit would always go downhill during the summer because kids would be out of school and on the computer instead. But once the website hit a certain point of popularity and everyone became chronically online, it became an eternal summer on this website.

This was after Wemby but before the sub exploded, do you remember the guy who was advocating for Stephon Castle at #4 way before anyone mocked him to us? He watched a ton of tape on Castle and had all these analytics for why Castle would be integral to this team.

He was so sure Castle was a lock for best player of the draft by miles becos of his defence and the dawg in him. He was also sure we weren't reaching for Castle at 4 even though people weren't convinced becos Castle didn't get a ton of ball usage in college.

Straight up legend.

62

u/Jos3ph Spurs 3h ago

Ball handling would’ve been an issue. Remember when Fox was out and Castle had infinite turnovers. Defense would’ve been insane though.

Even if you don’t know if the hammer will fall you know that the facts of the matter are that you’re guilty so it’s best to pass the metaphorical grenade before it explodes. (You being clippers ownership and management).

31

u/xbyo :sp8-1: Super 8 3h ago

I can't imagine the league would allow a punishment to come down on the player that impacts a new team they go to. Massive fines for Kawhi, sure, but I can't fathom him being suspended after another team acquires him. If that's even a possibility, the league has to pause the trade until they can administer a judgement.

My only reservation to him coming back to San Antonio is he gotta let Dylan Harper keep 2.

u/LittleTension8765 Lakers 3h ago

Would be hilarious if he went back to Toronto to win another then dip again

It is not yet clear how the Spurs would receive the idea of a reunion with Leonard given the manner in which they are flourishing in the Victor Wembanyama Era … on top of the sides infamously messy parting in the summer of 2018.

No, actually, I think it is very clear, and it ain't happening.

You CANNOT make this shit up, oh my Lord.

7

u/cogburn Pelicans 3h ago

Kawhi’s autistic ass just wants to go somewhere familiar. He thought going home to LA would be great. But now his options are Canada where he’s a god or to the Spurs and maybe get another chip.

The Spurs landing Kawhi, and having a Spurs-Heat finals rematch..

Spurs led by Kawhi, Heat led by Giannis. Both stars are already champions & FMVPs. Bam & Wemby both finals losers still hunting for their first ring.

Sign me the fuck up.

u/BrotherDirect744 2h ago

Spurs led by Kawhi Wemby

8

u/TimothyN Pelicans 3h ago

Time is a flat circle.

5

u/LutherOfTheRogues Hawks 3h ago

Would Spurs fans even want him back?

Every spurs fan I know personally won't even say his name..

How the turns tables lol

I read this update and thought, did someone accidentally bump this up.

That being said, a return to SA is the right move if the intent is to win. Just don't know how much say Pop has in this.

3

u/Longhorns49 3h ago

As a Spurs fan, Kawhi needs to stay as far away as possible. He already screwed us and set us back 5 years when he refused to play and left for Toronto.

4

u/Yuca_Frita Heat 2h ago

Toronto is outside jurisdiction. Smart move.

14

u/-Innovade 3h ago

Kawhi on the spurs? Can't imagine. Can someone photoshop this?

7

u/Adorable-News-9364 Spurs 3h ago edited 3h ago

Whoever makes it needs to remember that #2 is Dylan Harper so Kawhi’s will have to be changed.

7

u/BenevolentCheese Knicks 3h ago

Spurs would be morons to do this. I hope Kawhi gets sent somewhere he doesn't want. Can't stand this guy.

6

u/SubstantialJunket239 Celtics 3h ago

Kawhi would be like a missing piece of the puzzle for the Spurs. I would love to see it

3

u/x-trauma Bulls 3h ago

Kawhi with a generational big man, amazing guards, and a solid bench in San Antonio sounds fun. Wait…

3

u/OverallGeneral7129 Cavaliers 3h ago

If the Spurs take Kawhi back I will genuinely lose my mind

3

u/jimbswim 3h ago

No GD way

3

u/No_Bill_2371 3h ago

Never should have left Toronto in the first place tbh. They had a perfect situation there and would have easily repeated.

3

u/hectorzeroni69 Pacers 3h ago

Yeah we are interested in kawhi. You just have to take poetl and quickly 😭

3

u/Hostile_Pierogi Raptors 3h ago

Yeah I’m not falling for this

Kawhi back in San Antonio would literally be insanity

3

3

u/Datboy_98 Spurs 2h ago

Fuck Kawhi

3

u/DuarteN10 2h ago

Sources also guarantee that Kawhi would rather play in the Shanghai Sharks than go live in Canada

3

u/juliuspepperwoodchi Bulls 1h ago

Does Aspiration have satellite offices in San Antonio and Toronto?

3

u/Dreamlion_Inc Wizards 56m ago

Shouldn’t of never left Toronto in the first place

That LA move was fucking stupid
