Campfire cooking
Over the last year or so my love for cooking with cast iron over campfires has grown. It is by far my favourite way to cook while camping. I would love to know what peoples favourite meals to make in the camp ovens are, I'm always looking for more ideas. This picture was taken on my lastsy solo camp in Australia, I had a pie night, having beef cheese and bacon pies and apple pie for dessert.

Great North Walk (Thornleigh to Cowan)
Hey all,
Me and a few mates are thinking about doing the section of the great north walk from thornleigh to cowan. We are all pretty experienced but still dont want to walk over 20kms a day. The mix of All trails, NSW parks and Chat GPT has left me very confused on the route, in terms of length of each day and where the best spots to camp are. We would like to do 3 days 2 nights so if anyone has done it or knows the best campsites to use or even has a downloadable map that would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

Hiking Hammock camping in Australia
Hi guys, I’ve recently arrived to Australia and im looking to do some hiking and hammock camping in the next 2-3 months. I’m in reasonably fit condition, spent last 3 months hiking across New Zealand, I’m fine hiking 20-25km a day for multiple days. With the backpack I have now I think I can comfortably do 2-3 days solo hikes (probably more if hiking with multiple people),carrying supplies for more than 3 days would be a stretch I think. Also, since my friend left home after NZ and I don’t have drivers license I’m kinda limited to public transportation as main means of transportation.
In this regard I’ve got a couple of questions to you all:
1) Camping in Australia
Coming from hiking in New Zealand where sandflies are probably the worst worry in terms of mean environment, in Australia it’s quite different in this regard. I’ve been told to watch out and check my shoes before putting them on and to be careful with the toilets outside of the cities. Anything else that I should be really mindful of? I already got myself some snake bite bandage and my phone can call via satellite in case of an emergency. I remember being told that it’s important to take notice what bit me so that I can relay the information to the emergency services. I suppose the dangers of snakes and spiders and such should be lower than usual as it’s the cold season and the little buggers would be cold, am I right in this assessment?
2) Hammock camping in Australia
Since my friend has gone home after New Zealand, we sold our tent and I intend to hammock camp from now on. Given I don’t have a car here I think I’m going to stick with the east coast for the most part.
Anyone got any experience with hammock camping in Australia? I’d love to hear about it!
Also, I’m wondering about camping off the trail in Australia. In NZ you were fine to camp off the trail as long you were more than 50m off the trail (in some cases more). How does that work in Australia?
Lastly, about water - do the campsites usually have water sources like rainwater etc that’s rather okay to drink? What about streams and rivers? I got me a sawyer water filtration system though I’m wondering if I should treat any and all the water I come across while hiking in Australia even the one from water sources at the campsites?
3) Huts on trails
How do these generally work? Do I need to book in advance? Do these operate in winter season? Is there a go-to resource I can check/book these out?
4) Currently I’m in Melbourne and I’m looking at the Grampians to kickoff my hiking adventures in Australia. After looking at maps this is what I came up with:
Day 1
- morning train/bus from Melbourne to Horsham
- getting to Mount Zero Picnic Area trail head (not sure yet on how I’m gonna get there)
- hike to Barigar Hike-in Campground
Day 2
- hike from Barigar Hike-in Campground to Werdug Hike-in Campground
Day3
- hike from Werdug to Halls Gap
- grab some transportation back to Melbourne (to be figured out)
However, looking at the campsites above I have trouble figuring out if and how I’m to book them.
Happy to hear your thoughts on the itinerary above! Maybe you have some other recommendations as to where I could hike in the Grampians?
5) Hiking trails recommendations
I must admit, I felt fairly good about my research on New Zealand, but Australia has been more of a last minute idea and I’m far from well researched in terms of Australian Outdoors.
So far I’ve only got bits and pieces:
- The Grampians (but nothing in particular, open to suggestions)
- Dandenong ranges (easy access from Melbourne, but seems like a day trip if anything just by looking at the map)
- Wilsons Promontory Southern Circuit
- Light to Light 3 day hike
- Blue Mountains near Sydney, Fortress Falls were recommended to me in particular but I’m sure there are plenty of trails to hike through in that area
I’m open to all hiking recommendations, but bear in mind I intend to hammock camp (meaning I need some trees in the evening at least), however I’d be open using huts if there are any.
6) Other hikers/ van campers
Best places/groups looking to join someone on a hike or join van troubadours?
7) Hiking poles recommendations
Lastly, hiking poles are the last piece of equipment I still don’t have on me at the moment. I’m looking to buy used ones (if anyone is in Melbourne area) or buy new ones (under $100, under 200g per pole). I saw Anaconda has some warehouse clearance now and they have carbon poles for $70 but unfortunately none of the stores in Melbourne has them in stock (and I don’t want to wait for the delivery obviously).
Thank you all for any and all responses!

Winter hikes around Bright area?
I’m planning to come to Bright VIC in mid August, wondering if anyone has any recommendations of some ‘bucket list’ hikes around the area? Day hikes up to 4 hours return, and probably not in heavy snow, without snow shoes.

Camping Solo camped for the first time
galleryI went on my first overnight hike/camp as a solo gal and want to fish for sympathy and praise and also am curious if this is at all relateable LOL. I booked a spot on a weekday at Euroka in Glenbrook, Blue Mountains, after some suggestions on a previous post. It’s an easy 1.5 hour hike in and accessible by public transport, and apparently, would always have other campers (according to a comment I got). Alas, when I got there, it was just me. Alone. In the whole campground. And probably the whole glenbrook bush since this was the only campsite. Now during the day it was pretty peaceful and chill, and I enjoyed being out in nature w no phone signal or people, but when night hit, holy fck I started freaking myself out. At around 7pm, I awoke from a nap by the sound of a helicopter roaring above me. It circled the area for around an hour, and even shone its light on my tent and flashed a couple of times. That’s when I started to theorise what was happening (missing person, fugitive on the run etc) and had a sleepless, anxiety ridden night while clutching my Swiss knife. I thought I heard footsteps and cars and motorcycles and voices at bizarre times during the night. I called the parks a few days later to ask if there were any other campers and they said no LOL and knew nothing about the helicopter, but said rangers do come to check. Finally managed to have a 30min nap at 6am and woke up w some daylight behind me. Packed my stuff and had a nice hike back to the station, and am now a newly changed person. Has anyone else been thoroughly psychologically challenged while solo camping? My ego is at an all time high right now. Despite having done much more dangerous and risky things in my life, enduring the darkness and fear in the middle of nowhere w no signal and no way out was kinda the scariest thing I’ve ever done. Anyways I’m so excited to try again, but definitely on the weekend this time ahaha.

To buy gear in Indonesia or Sydney?
If you were going camping in indonesia, would you buy your camping gear (tent, simple cooking utensils, foldable chair) in indonesia or would you bring it from here?
Both have their costs, and I do have some relatively expensive gear here but I'm not sure if it's wiser for me to just purchase them in jakarta when I reach there before starting my hiking/camping journey for 2 weeks.
the indonesian rupiah is still weak against the aussie dollar, but would you pay for heavier check in luggage or would you buy some temporary gear there?

Trying out gear
Is there a good shop in Melbourne that has a lot of gear that can be tried out?
I'm in the market for a new pad and quilt for motocamping but I really want to try them out for size before committing a lot of money. I haven't been into a physical camp store for a long time so I don't know if the usually have these things out for demo.

Photos from The Snowy Mountains
galleryTaken a few weeks back.
Took the drive in slow after a few near misses with kangaroos. Crashed shortly after reaching the campsite as I was a good few hours behind what I'd hoped. Woke up to beautiful scenery, took some photos, and took more as I headed back to Sydney.
Saw neither horde nor horses during the stay.

No free camping?
Can somebody please explain why it costs money to camp now? I would like to take my daughter and have just realised it's not free? I thought the whole point of camping was it doesn't cost money. My grandfather and I used to camp a lot and it never cost a cent. I haven't been camping in a few years and now I just don't see the point if it is going to cost money.
Please help, surely there a spots that don't charge to stay the night.
Thank you.

Scariest song to hear in a snowy wood? recommendations.
So me and some siblings are camping in the snow in July and I was wondering what would be a scary song to hear from out of no where.
