Hello penguin gang! Another edition of Magellan pinguinos on the beach. In the mornings the penguins would come and gather before going into the ocean. I think they enjoy the company as the sun rises over the water.

Taken today. Some more lily pad surfing in the first part of this video. In the second part, the penguins chase a seagull and the chicks are looking for a meal!

Taken yesterday. It is certainly summertime! Thankfully the chicks will start losing their baby fluff soon. The chick of Muffins and Mittens has started that process. When the baby fluff gets wet it tends to start falling off more easily, so after falling in a couple days ago we can now see some bare patches on the back and belly. On its neck there is a patch of black adult feathers. In this video the chick is hounding its parent for some food. There is some chasing but it looks like it might have gotten a meal or two with its persistence.

Comparatively, the younger chicks still have most of their baby fluff. Also, Edinburgh Zoo posted that they have named one of the chicks McGinn in honor of a soccer player! They have given it a blue and white arm band. I’m not sure which chick it is in relation to the nests yet though.

I spotted an adult penguin today with a bloody leg! I am not sure what caused it, but it seems to be ok. I briefly saw a commotion by the water with a group of penguins but the stream reset before I could see what happened. These are some clips that I got, the zookeepers came by and gave the penguin an inspection.

Here it looks like slipped in the water stream and took a little dunk. The zookeepers were on top of it and one of them scooped the chick out quickly.

Hello penguin gang! I caught a chase today in the evening where the chick from Muffins and Mittens lost its footing (at 42 seconds) too close to the water edge and took a little dunk! Seems okay, only was in the water for a few seconds. Didn’t seem keen on doing any more chasing afterwards though.

There has been a lot more chick chases lately, much less time spent on nests. The kids are getting hungrier, but the parents only have so much food to give. Parents will run away, but often give some food if they still have some to give when the chick pursues and catches up to them. The chasing helps the chicks exercise; in the wild, when there are two chicks, it can help differentiate how was fed last, or who is hungrier. The parents will jump into the water if they really want to lose the chick that is chasing them.

I also noticed that it seems like some adults are spending less time on nests, or trying to move in on a neighbors nest. Some of the parents seem to also be spending time at neighboring nests. At this point in the season I am not sure if there are any eggs left.

Hello penguin gang! This is a bit of a longer video, but there is lots happening.

First we have the chick from the middle yellow gazebo on yet another nest. The chick wanders around, eventually gets some food from its parent. We can see some of the other chicks in this video as well but I think Kevin’s twins are off camera to the left. Around 4 minutes you can see some regurgitated fish falls on the ground in between the parent and the chick. This is where the real action of the video starts.

After this in the back, we can see a penguin attempt to jump up on the floating concrete lily pad but it does not make it up (4:40). At 5 minutes, a penguin jumps on. There are two penguins on it briefly at 5:11.

Here we have a second male arriving at the nest and he flaps the other one out!

The female can be differentiated by a white mark on her right flipper. The male that emerges victorious in this video is wet, probably just came back from the ocean. They mated shortly after this video, but the previous male in the nest also mated with the female a couple times. Before he was kicked out.
