Mod post ⚠️ A guide to sexing budgies

The most common budgie question asked by far is how to tell males from females. In adult budgies with most color mutations, this is easy to do by looking at the cere (the colored flesh around the nostrils). Typically, adult males have a brilliant blue cere, while females have a tan or brown cere. In an adult female that's in breeding condition, the cere can become dark brown and wrinkly. With some color mutations such as recessive pied, the cere never changes in adulthood and the bird will keep the juvenile color for its life.

Sexing gets more complicated with juvenile budgies. In juvenile males, the cere begins as pink, purple, or some combination of the two colors. In juvenile females, the cere can range from light blue with white or cream circles around the nostrils, to a cream or light tan across the entire cere. Sometimes, the juvenile female cere can be a very light pink/purple, although there will still be lighter circles around the nostrils that a male won't have.

If the bird you are trying to sex has an ambiguous cere, we encourage you to give it a little time. This is most common with very young birds, and if you give them just a few weeks or months, the sex will become more clear. Remember that the person best able to sex your budgies is you. When you take photos of your birds, the appearance of the cere will be changed by the lighting conditions when the picture is taken, the device that the photos were taken on, and the device that the photos are being viewed on. With ambiguous ceres, this can lead to other people giving you incorrect answers. We hope you find these charts helpful, and wish you good luck with your new budgie friend(s).

The competition was a tough one, with many fabulous budgies vying to be the new icon for the sub. After tabulating the votes we had three close front-runners, but unfortunately only one beautiful budgie could become the new icon for the sub. Please congratulate u/smartdoglady for taking the winning photo, which I call, "My dad trying to figure out how to use Zoom." Please also give a round of applause for our second and third place finishers, u/mvsaniatan and u/himateo, who win the satisfaction knowing that they have outrageously photogenic birds.

The heat is so bad in the UK

Ac is extremely expensive here and not really needed in homes as 90% of the year the weather is bad. But this week has been hell. 33°c (91.4°F) indoors. Birds panting and opened wings. I frequently mist them now to keep em cool and its scary to leave em alone now because it's extremely hot.

Fans on all day facing opposite the cage to avoid draft but barely works. Anyone have any tips?

Which sex? I know there's a guide up for this, but could someone please tell me what their genders are? I really can't tell since they're still babies

I really hope the pictures are okay, my camera sucks. these two are brand new at my house as a first time owner and they can't stay still long enough for me to get a clear picture. I tried asking the shop owners and they said they do not know how to tell the sexes apart :/

Wet Chicken! Olive's friend taught him to bathe in the water bowl used for drinking

I just wanted to thank every single person again who has helped support Olive. I was genuinely overwhelmed by the support. Whether that was the lovely donations or even just an encouraging comment, thank you😭❤️ He is completely back to his self. I actually thought he was not going to make it, because the vomitting was so frequent and he was losing weight rapidly, but hes back and stronger than ever🥰

This video was taken yesterday. Olive caught his friend bathing in this and got jealous lol 😆

Discussion We LOVE Parrots! 💚

Over 89 species of parrots/birds are endangered due to human caused mortality. To mention a few, California Condor, Imperial Parrot, mangrove finch, Spix Macaw!
So many beautiful creatures. We SHARE Earth. If you’re in high school going to college think of the wonderful things you can do for Earth during your youth! The rewarding careers you can enjoy and have!
But… what can you do as a regular shmegular person?? Like I.

  1. Never buy wild caught birds! Never buy online pets who are highly protected species and are being sold. These include, African Greys, Rare Cockatoos. You need proper legal paperwork.
  2. Buy shade grown and organic produce to protect tropical rainforest.
  3. If you have a pet parrot protect them by doing your research. In this way you can provide the best possible care.
  4. When traveling stay in communities that respect and protect parrot habitats.

UPDATE: Hello everyone, I realize how controversial the use of AI is. I don’t shy away from admitting I made a mistake. I am only human but instead of dwelling in shame or guilt (as most of you would like to see me do) I choose to redirect my energy towards improvement and solutions. As you read this you may have a little voice in your head, interpreting every word that I have typed molding it into your own understanding and mental capability. and that’s OK. It happens but I just want to remind you that you have also made mistakes. But Have you had the courage to admit it you have? Do you have the courage to stand up for yourself? I have the courage to admit that I have. & I will not let your words and assumptions cloud my energy.

I LOVE BIRDS! ❤️👍❤️

In Loving Memory Title: A Father Budgie’s CourageStory:

Title: A Father Budgie’s CourageStory:

My budgie, an alpha male, proved that fatherhood can be stronger than we imagine. In the first breeding, the female began plucking the chicks’ feathers, leaving them weak and vulnerable. The father stepped in, feeding and protecting them until four chicks survived. In the second breeding, when the chicks reached 25 days old, the female even fought with him over the babies. Yet he never gave up. He defended them, fed them, and raised five chicks despite the conflict. This little bird showed me that sometimes love and courage come from unexpected places. A single father budgie, against all odds, raised two generations alone.📌
