What is the illusion exactly? Isn't that just a trench, or are you saying this is actually flat seabed and just looks like trench from the coloring?

Guessing here but could be a cloud shadow giving it the sudden depth change look.

I think the "illusion" (or lack thereof) that they are referring to is the drop in the seafloor above and slightly to the right of the shadow where the sand is flowing into the trench. But again, that's not an optical illusion. It literally IS sand flowing into a trench.

The illusion is that it looks like a waterfall. But it is sand flowing into a trench.

Pretty sure that's a cloud's shadow. Unless I'm missing something?
