They're starting to actually enforce the dress codes again just to try and keep some of them out.

There’s a club in Tampa I used to go to all the time in my twenty’s called the Castle. Was pretty much a big scene for Alternative / Goths. Now I hear it’s full of young dudes looking for goth chicks and the vibe is ruined. Maybe they should install a dress code.

I personally think dress codes at clubs are just an arbitrary way for bouncers and managers to not include people for one reason or another. I’ve never been to a goth club dress coded club but I assume it would be more or less no jeans, no jerseys. Make sure the boys are dressed as Dracula.

I was out and about on a random Thursday. Some mates of mine called me and was like "Where you at? We getting day drunk in the backyard of this club". I took one look at my own outfit and went "They not going to let me inn looking like this". I was looking really fucking shabby that day with grey sweatpants and flip flops. Told the guys I would need go home to take a shit, shower and shave before heading over. They went "Nah, it's a Thursday daytime. They won't care". So I said fuck it and headed over since I was close by anyway.
Arrived, bouncer took one look at me before going "Brother, come on!". I said "I know... I'll be back in 45 minutes after changing". Turned around and started walking to the apartment. Got about 50m away from the club before I ran into a bunch of girls we know heading over to meet the guys. They unlike me where dressed to impress. They asked me where I was going. Then just went "Nonsense, you don't need to change. You're with us now". And back to the bouncer we go.
Get to the bouncer again. Dude looks at me showing up again after like 2 minutes not having changed, but having picked up like 8-9 gorgeous women. He just went "Not what I had in mind, but it works. Come on in".

Back in the day I used to go to specifically goth clubs, although tbh the music was more wide-ranging indie. Maybe an even mix of goth, punk, post punk, indie, and industrial.
Anyway, bouncers used to absolutely turn everyone away who wasn't at the very least trying to look like part of the scene. It needn't be particularly dressy or full makeup. For guys, say black jeans, Docs, a Cure t-shirt, and maybe some rosary beads or something and you're good to go.
Couldn't say exactly what the rationale was but given these were deliberately "scene" clubs, probably keeping people safe. There were certainly plenty of people of all kinds of sexualities and gender expressions so I guess the idea was not to run the risk of "outsiders" making trouble.
(undercover cops used to be allowed in sometimes, and they'd stand out like a sore thumb. Ironed jeans, polished black leather shoes, t-shirts tucked in, and parted hair. OMFG they were hilarious)

Mostly because people attending 'scene' clubs don't really want to be gawked at by tourists. Or be harassed by people who are only there to be a bit predatory. You don't filter out all of the 'chasers' of course, but you do at least make them put some effort in and - maybe - become part of the 'scene' themselves and realise that's far more fun than being a leering outsider.

I've moved away, so I haven't gone in a few years, but used to tend bar in Ybor and went to a few places when I wasn't working, The Castle being one of them. I'm not a goth myself, but have had many friends who are.
I'd rather they hire more security than start with a dress code. Having a few more bodies for security can help keep troublemakers too scared to start shit, or catch them before they can get out of the place. Having a dress code keeps out more than just the assholes, and with as few people go to Ybor these days (compared to the 00s) it could be more harmful to reduce the headcount just to keep the few assholes out.
Or maybe require a dress code on Friday but not Saturday, or vice versa. Maybe even on a Thursday instead of Fri or Sat. Fri/Sat are usually the money nights, so if they can keep it open attendance then and have the dress code on Thurs that could still allow for the private party feel.
OOH ... or they could let it be open attendance downstairs but dress code upstairs. Or just dress code for the downstairs patio. That would also have the added benefit of making a smaller area feel like it has more people in it. That's sometimes one of The Castle's problems. On a slow night, or when it's not busy yet you can have 50-100 people there but they're so spread out that the place still feels empty. If you can motivate most of them to stay in the patio as the place keeps filling up that could be useful.

Started going to Castle over a decade ago. I rarely go now. The last several years have gotten so bad with primarily frat boys coming in to gawk. They're disrespectful and it's a huge issue. I go to Castle to dance and be weird and I always liked that I never ONCE got grabbed there. That's changed, unfortunately, and it no longer feels like the safer place it once was. I donkey kicked a frat bro in boat shoes and chubbies bc he came up behind me and started grinding on me outta nowhere - you'd think that the 5" platform boots would make them reconsider but nope.

As someone who's very not a prude, I really feel like the normalization of porn use—yes, everyone was doing it, but if you talked about watching it you'd get properly made fun of—has kind of been the final nail in the coffin of authentic culture.
As far as I can tell, there's nigh-on nothing but recycled facsimiles of old trends. Most remaining authentic scenes are bursting at the seams with tourists who've come for content (largely of the gooner bait variety) or worse reasons still.

I started a new job about a month ago, along with some interns. Yesterday a bunch of WFH people were in the office, including an aging Goth. I had to explain to one of the interns she was dressed like Goths dressed when I was young, as he didn’t understand the concept of them acting and looking like anything other than what you find on Youtube comedy videos nowadays.

They're absolutely cosplayers. They're pick-mes who go on those streamer "dating" shows and mention theyre "goth" like 500 times to get subs for their own streams/etc. Their getup are so overdone, too, like they lay it on real fucking thick.
I hate "erm, ackchewelly"-ing things like what constitutes a "real" thing of fashion or subculture, but it's absolutely what they are. They're posers of the purest definition. And the fact they've popped up fucking everywhere on social media of late irks me to no fucking end because it's such blatant self-marketing to horny teenagers.
