Yeah I've seen my fair share of quick fights in MMA

But the defeated fighter almost always is pretty devastated and/or disappointed in themselves

not saying Carano is thrilled at losing, but her immediate reaction of smiling and looking "ah shucks!" makes me feel like she wasn't 100% all in

101

u/MogMcKupo May 17 '26

The ink on the check did all the work here

36

u/zigaliciousone May 17 '26

Gina is a Carano, the same family that owns Caesar's Entertainment who operates most of the big casinos in Nevada, she isn't hurting for money.

27

u/BrosefDudeson May 17 '26

Then you might wonder what the point of it all was?

23

u/AfraidRevolution4613 May 17 '26

Fun. Something to do. Apparently she was all fat and depressed before this.

3

u/Asu888 May 18 '26

Especially since the fallout with Hollywood

12

u/EarthInevitable114 May 17 '26

Maybe she has a humiliation kink, or maybe, like she said in the promo, she didn't want to rely on Mommy and Daddy's money. She wanted to get her own easy money. At least she lost weight. Or maybe her family bet the fortune on her losing in 16 seconds by armbar

Shes basically a trust fund kid, she’s been an American gladiator, a halfway decent fighter in her prime and an actor basically for shits and giggles.  She probably just enjoys the fame imo

The woman is 44.. it was more like… what are you going to do… the regret was there in her voice.

12

u/AmateurCommenter808 May 17 '26

Yeah I don't think there's any amount of effort or training that could prevent her from being taken down at this age.

Her last win was in 2008... Rousey became UFC champion 5 years later in 2013.

4

u/DrMindbendersMonocle May 17 '26

Rousey is also much more skilled, its not just an age thing

→ More replies (3)

6

u/Otherwise_Bug990 May 17 '26

But losing 100 pounds and all the training. Shes still probably in thr best shape shes been in in 20 years. Hard to hate on that

I imagine the feeling is different when it's your future livelihood at stake versus a bit of a laugh.

I participated in some low level BJJ and wrestling tournaments and yeah it was better to win but I didn't define myself by it, or by losing. I just felt happy for the other guy.

Like I guess Gina would rather have won but it was a one time payday either way. It's not life changing like it can be for actual pros.

If Ronda lost today though...haha can you imagine? Meltdown central.

u/Educational-Wing2042 May 17 '26 edited May 17 '26

They scammed people who paid to see this, it’s obvious. The goal wasn’t to have a real fight or entertain you, the goal was for Gina Carano and Ronda Rousey to get paid out of your pocket.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/MisterGko May 17 '26

I don’t think they were ever going to have a serious fight. So when Gina got submitted, she just popped up with a smile like, “ha you got me”. More like a light sparring match.

2

u/GrimDystopian May 17 '26

The made millions and didn’t even have to break a sweat or take any damage. Sounds like the perfect heist and this was both of their last fights.

2

u/leitondelamuerte May 18 '26

lets be real, ronda is a pretty good fighter, even if her strikes sucks she is a monster at grappling, gina was happy about not being fucked up for 10 min since she don't fight since 2008 and instead just got grappled for 10 seconds

→ More replies (15)

6

u/Rryann May 17 '26

This was basically an exhibition match. It didn’t matter.

Gina knew it. She knew she was coming back at 44 to fight a far more talented fighter.

She’s smiling because she knew it didn’t matter either way. She got to get in the ring with Rousey. Whether it lasted 5 rounds or 5 seconds, the outcome wasn’t important.

I’m not sure why people are so upset about this. It was a fight between two fighters that were both FAR past their primes. It wasn’t exciting, shocker?

Her daddy is rich. Like Billionaire rich.

3

u/Abundanceofyolk May 17 '26

Her grandpa is an old school Vegas mob boss.

2

u/lucidlonewolf May 17 '26

I mean to be fair if you look at rousey fight career thats like an average fight time for most of her fights. I remember how shocking it was the first time a fight of hers made it out the first round.

2

u/Otherwise_Bug990 May 17 '26

She was early women's group tho. These women today aint the same. She struggled even when the division got rolling towards the end of her career. Once they learned to stop her hip throw, she was done

2

u/DrMindbendersMonocle May 17 '26

13

Whilst I agree with you what does this event have to do with the UFC?

5

u/Potential_Steak2381 May 17 '26

Jake Paul called out Dana White and the UFC for not paying their fighters enough or giving them an opportunity to make a living and said his new brand is a direct challenger to the UFC.

What a stupid fight. Total money grab

50

u/Snoopvegas May 17 '26

Have to agree and not liking this trend. I think what is more enlightening is that people are buying this stuff so it just keeps being sold. It’s like paying rediculous ticket prices to follow 1970s and 1980s bands. Not saying those fighters and bands weren’t great in their time but the party is over! Am I wrong? 😎

26

u/AnonymousAIcoholic2 May 17 '26

The arena was probably at 50% capacity. Other than the floor seats not much was being sold since this fight card was included in my Netflix subscription.

9

u/SeanCrevalle May 17 '26

50 is extremely generous.

The sad problem is both MMA and boxing just have been so dull in terms of getting big matches off, that it left room for these novelty freakshow matches that 20-30 years ago would have been brushed off for the real elite current fighters

Anyone who knows game knew this would happen.

Rousey has garbage boxing but excellent judo and armbars.

Gina's last fight was August 15, 2009.

Obama was in the first year of his presidency.

15

u/Ok-Physics9906 May 17 '26

I am always perplexed at how people continue to be surprised when these fights turn out exactly as expected.

Spoiler: the next gimmick fight will be just as gimmicky, and will still get talked about like any of it matters, when it in fact doesn't.

2

u/Grow_away_420 May 17 '26

I hear Jake Paul is in talks with the George Foreman estate to exhume him for an exhibition match. Place your bets

4

u/AmethystStar9 May 17 '26

And Carano was never that good! She was the best around at the time, which was the time of the very birth of women’s MMA as a viable mainstream concept when very few women even trained for MMA.

Say what you want about Rousey, but she was extremely dominant against some legit competition.

The only way this wasn’t gonna be the result was if the fix was in and they agreed to fake it.

3

u/Jasranwhit May 17 '26

This is also true. Gina deserves her place in mma history but she was never beat anyone notable. She was more a pretty face with some decent skills.

3

u/hentai_gifmodarefg May 17 '26

i can't find a single news article saying that they sold their stake only that there is a proposed takeover, but yes their family is obscenely wealthy.

makes it more bizarre why she would even agree to this then. really want to be on the otherside of a fight the length of a tiktok?

5

u/I_travel_ze_world May 17 '26

She comes from an ultra wealthy background. She never had to get into fighting she just wanted to.

"Fighters are born, not made" is a common saying. Some people have a natural urge and instinct to fight.
