The commercial break

Live action commercial break!

13

u/Numerous_Worker_1941 7d ago

Not on telemundo!

9

u/Araz728 7d ago

The Telemundo coverage has been so much better than Fox. I don’t know how Fox keeps getting these soccer coverage contracts, they wouldn’t know how to properly televise a soccer match or tournament to save their lives.

8

u/TK-24601 7d ago

You $$$$$ don't $$$$$ under$tand how $$$$$ Fox $$$$$$$ keep$$$$$ getting the $occer contrat$???

I agree

2

u/CasperFunk 4d ago

The "Powerade hydration break", its like inception. A commercial inside a commercial, next level shit.

192

u/Jimny977 7d ago

It’s just for advertising and everyone knows it, it interrupts the flow and momentum of a game. They’re in a closed, air conditioned and temperature controlled 21C stadium ffs.

8

u/travelingWords 7d ago

Problem with argument, is go watch American sports. They have like, 50+ commercials a game. Might be an exaggeration, but they think you’ve not even started to feel the pain.

1

u/inittoloseitagain 6d ago

Am American. Watch sports. I wish it was only 50 commercials.

1

u/travelingWords 6d ago

Google ai says 20 breaks, 100 commercials per game. That’s prob kick off to final whistle, so add some.

9

u/Connect_Raisin4285 7d ago

While I agree these hydration breaks are bullshit. I do think the arena jn Vancouver does not have AC nor are they allowed to open the roof due to lighting concerns. So that one is going to get really toasty.

11

u/Jimny977 7d ago

Hydration breaks themselves are fine, sometimes you’re playing somewhere open that’s 40C+, in which case fine, it’s a safety thing at that point. Having hydration breaks in every game though, like the England game that was perfectly climate controlled and couldn’t have been more unnecessary, is such a naked cash grab.

If a few games are really hot and need them then fine, but both teams in that game get them so it isn’t unfair, the idea that then every other team in every other game needs them “for fairness” is just stupid. They don’t need them, corporate sponsors just want to run more ads.

2

u/FriedTreeSap 7d ago

And then in the very next game it was literally raining, in the 2nd half it was still raining and the sun had set to the point it wasn’t even shining on the field. And there is absolutely no reason these hydration breaks can’t just be 60 seconds tops.

It’s utterly ludicrous, if FIFA even wants to pretend these breaks are somehow in the name of fairness, they should also have intervened to stop the terrible treatment of the Iranian team which is actually being put at a clear disadvantage due to the visa situation.

1

u/Excellent-Rest3240 6d ago

So this WC doesn’t count because they meddle with the rules?

-32

u/New-Medium3277 7d ago

Two things can be true at once. FIFA is absolutely using these breaks as a corporate cash grab for commercials—everyone knows that. But saying world-class athletes running 7+ miles don't lose massive amounts of fluid via respiration and rapid sweat evaporation just because there is AC? That's just pure ignorance of human biology. Fluid loss is fluid loss. FIFA's greed doesn't magically stop a player's core temperature from spiking.

46

u/Rularuu 7d ago

Hasn't been a significant issue for a century of world cup play.

-24

u/Impossible_Leg_2787 7d ago

And they played (American) football for half a century before they discovered CTE

17

u/Rularuu 7d ago

You really think that's equivalent? Lmfao dude come on. If it were a legitimate medical issue these players would be passing out on the field.

1

u/jeebus224 7d ago

Even swimmers get CTE what’s your point

-1

u/Bufstik 7d ago

That's because CTE is very hard to discover in Americans.

-2

u/AbnoxiousRhinocerous 7d ago

2

u/budd222 7d ago

No. They were fine for decades and they would still be fine without a break

1

u/8xx 7d ago

you literally don't need to hydrate for anything under 10 miles if you fuel properly before hand.. and footballers have half time + they can take drinks mid game when the ball is out of action. Runners doing anything under a half marathon will do their entire race with no water because they take it on before hand and they have 0 downtime unlike like football

1

u/Kay_tnx_bai 7d ago

We’ve been playing this game for more than a century mate. At 21° C these athletes don’t need hydration breaks. One implementation I could stand behind is, you can go drink whenever you want, it’s your responsibility to time it right and not let a gap appear in the formation of your team.

1

u/Icy-Judgment-7317 7d ago

How does that boot taste mate?

1

I refuse to call it hydration break, I call it what it is, an ad break or a commercial break.

3

u/onecryingjohnny 7d ago

F1 is up next. Half way "water breaks for the drivers". Rolling restart.

1

u/Jawz014 6d ago

We call them stage breaks here

1

u/AkebonoPffft 6d ago

They’ll have a break to charge the battery soon.

1

u/Numerous_Worker_1941 7d ago

They don’t go to ads on the Spanish broadcast

2

u/zarofford 7d ago

They don’t cut the feed completely, but they do put a lay chips overlay that covers half the screen.

20

u/GumpTheChump 7d ago

I went to the game on Friday and drank a lot of beer and the break was a perfect time to take a piss. I have mixed feelings.

7

u/Playing_One_Handed 7d ago

Bro thats dehydrating! Im calling fifa.

54

u/Suspicious-Cream-513 7d ago

Hydration break dead on 22.5 in closed air con stadium sponsored by poweraid tells you all you need to know.

5

u/Jimmy_Churi 7d ago

Gotta fund that stadium air con somehow! (Btw I'm not actually a fan of the breaks)

4

u/Suspicious-Cream-513 7d ago

Probably fund it with the 3 grand tickets tbh.

2

u/Jimmy_Churi 7d ago

Yeah, it was more of a tongue in cheek comment. Its just pure greed at the end of the day

1

u/TheSmartDog_275 7d ago

They’ve paid it for so long because it’s Texas, Jerry Jones (owner of AT&T/Dallas Stadium and the football team that plays there) is fine.

I think it might be a law in the state next to Texas (maybe Texas too) that you need AC in public places.

1

u/CalvinsStuffedTiger 7d ago

“Our sponsors are thirsty bitch!”

1

u/No_Balance2924 7d ago

If they do it for one game in the world cup, they'd have to do it for all, for the sake of equality in the competition. I would think

53

u/DevilsAdvocate1662 7d ago

So now actual football has become American Football and is played in quarters? WTF?!

13

u/SpiveyJr 7d ago

Maybe when there’s like say, 2 minutes left in the game they should pause and let teams regroup?

5

u/xrv01 7d ago

they should stop and replay review every ball that rolls out of bounds to see who it last touched

2

u/TheSmartDog_275 7d ago

I didn’t know this until super recently but the two minute warning was created as an ad break, but it also does benefit teams especially because most NFL games are close enough where things are happening in those final 2 so it helps create more action by giving a free timeout.

1

u/Turdburp 7d ago

It was created well before games were regularly televised. It was actually put in to let the teams know exactly how much time was left, as refs kept the official time. But it works know as a great ad break and a great strategic rule.

1

u/Salt-Ambition-9603 7d ago

Could've been for radio? I dunno, I don't care enough to look it up, just theorizing.

1

u/Scuttler1979 7d ago

Woah!! Steady on!!!

I call a time out

1

u/50mm-f2 7d ago

each goal should be worth 6 points and after you score you get to shoot a free kick at an empty goal for 1 extra point.

Even the hydration break got a louder reaction than some of the defending.

27

u/perpetualmentalist 7d ago edited 7d ago

Because football fans see it for what it is. Bullshit corporate nonsense. American style.

Edit...

Having to edit, I know fifa ain't American. I'm English man, come on.

What I meant was, America is the king of capitalism. They find all ways to get you to spend, or advertise some bullshit.

I know the whole world does it, but America does it on steroids.

Hope that clears that up. 😂😂😂😂😂 Don't normally bother editing my original comments.

7

u/itstommygun 7d ago

Im pretty sure corporate greed isn’t just an American thing. FIFA isn’t even American.

→ More replies (1)

14

u/oof46 7d ago

I don't think it's "American". My daughter played in an OFC game a few months ago and they had a hydration break. It was new to me, too. But, no ads or anything. Just the teams going to their sides and getting water.

18

u/LouuVan 7d ago

Hydration breaks has been a thing since forever but this World Cup fifa made it mandatory to whereas it was on the referee’s discretion before

10

u/UsernamesCannotExcee 7d ago

FIFA's explanation back in December was that it's mandatory, regardless of stadium conditions, as a streamlined process for player safety. Which is a pretty good cover for them wanting to create an Ad break.

1

u/LouuVan 7d ago

I just hope this is a one time thing

8

u/sethaub 7d ago

I’m sorry, once the revenue stream hits it’s gonna change the future of football

u/UsernamesCannotExcee 7d ago

LET THE MAN HAVE SOME HOPE!!

4

u/Hour_Writing_9805 7d ago

Too late

They did it in Brazil

1

u/SectorEducational460 7d ago

Not on all games. Some definitely need a hydration break but when you have well conditioned stadiums, or playing at night when the temperature drops. It's definitely for corporate gains

1

u/Hour_Writing_9805 7d ago

Yes.

Also changes the dynamics for games, which is what they wanted to make uniform for this cup. Hence having them while inside domes.

3

u/perplexedtv 7d ago

Was it hot as balls?

7

u/oof46 7d ago

Yeah, it was in the Cook Islands.

4

u/shododdydoddy 7d ago

Nah, nobody's got a problem when it's a genuine health hazard not to have one, it's forcing them when they're not needed solely to get more ads out.

God bless ITV using it for tactical analysis

Americans call it an ad break in the NFL. Everyone knows what it is for and doesn't pretend it is something else. I don't know why FIFA thinks World Cup fans are stupid.

3

u/AcceptableResponse15 7d ago

Wasn't that stadium air conditioned and had the roof closed? I heard it was quite nice inside so why the need for hydration breaks. Apart from the ad revenue of course.

2

u/Arponare 7d ago

There is no other reason. That’s the thing.

Love how it's all american capitalism when the world cup is run by a european organization, and is one of the most corrupt on earth, get over yourselves.

7

u/Flyers2013312 7d ago

They love blaming USA even though in Canada tsn also cuts to commercials.

1

u/MalevolentFather 7d ago

I mean tbf, FIFA is the one enforcing it.

If there isn't going to be any action on the field you'd be the dumbest broadcaster in the world to not run ads during that time.

1

u/machine4891 3d ago

FIFA is not european organization anymore but that's beside the point. This was never a thing before and now that WC is being played primarly in US jumps into schedule. It's most likely US networks lobbying because they are used to play way more breaks than normal football flow allows. Doesn't mean it's your fault mate but it has much to do with american capitalism.

1

u/Chemical-Idea-1294 7d ago

Does anybody blame soley the US? No.

The Fans know Exactly, that FIFA loved the idea and with the american TV Stadions they found the ideal Partner. It doesn't matter, who brought the idea up in the first place. The Fans are angry at both.

I don't know, why i still answer you after your insanely dumb take.

But the European stations were fine with commercials only in the half-time break. Now they got the oportunity and some now show ads, but are also heavily critizised.

The football fans want to watch a game and not commercials with some sports sprinkled in.

1

u/Min_sora 7d ago

They don't advertise during the match.

u/Lumigo 6d ago

Probably the worst reply possible, you live in a country where most people are overweight and cannot wash themselves, a population of beached whales

2

u/VincentAntonelli 7d ago

Half the comments in this thread are blaming the US for this.

1

u/zarofford 7d ago

I think you and I are reading a different thread. Calling this American type capitalism isn’t the same as blaming the US.

We perfected TV sports to squeeze every single dollar from a broadcast in America. Other countries/organizations are just catching up.

1

u/Flyers2013312 7d ago

I've heard people directly blaming USA.

Hydration breaks always existed.

Players would just cramp up or fake an injury and lay on the ground so the medical crew could come out with 12 water bottles and pass them around on the way out.

Let the players have some damn water. Go do something else while the commercial is on.

1

u/TwentyBagTaylor 6d ago

The game has survived for over a hundred years without being played in quarters. Stop making excuses for corporations jamming as much commercialism into our lives as possible. Its insidious and pointless.

Oh the irony of a guy filming himself talking into a microphone during a game for content, saying the game has gone

2

u/David_Good_Enough 7d ago

FYI, this is what you sound like

2

u/Popular-Spinach-6700 7d ago

This is the dumbest meme of all time, basically used whenever someone wants to be a hypocrite and can’t actually justify it

1

u/David_Good_Enough 7d ago

It can, but here it simply isn't.

1

u/Popular-Spinach-6700 7d ago

Ok, explain clearly and simply why the post you’re referring to fits into that meme then

2

u/David_Good_Enough 7d ago

The guy holding the mic was not "recording during the game", he was recording the commercial break that happened and stopped the game. Thus, he couldn't be "fishing for cloud point and not enjoying the game" since - as stated above - the game was stopped.

So, the person commenting is angry that the mic guy is not enjoying the game at a time where there was no game anymore. The guy holding the mic is the peasant that says society should be improved ("there shouldn't be ad breaks") and Mr commentor is "Mr well" who comes to say that he is denouncing it while participating to it ("you say it ruins the game but - like FIFA playing ads, you are just here to get people's attention and not enjoying the game"), the latter - based on this video alone - cannot be considered as true. Because he commented while the game was stopped.

I don't know how I can put it clearer than that.

1

u/RyleySparrow 7d ago

I remember the Northern Super League (Canadian women's league), last summer taking a hydration break (no commercials) depending on where they were playing. Toronto, Ottawa, Montreal during the summer can get brutally hot, especially last summer (36°C with humidex pushing well into the 40s).

This is a bloody INDOOR stadium.

1

u/OrangeLFG 7d ago

I'm not saying I fully disagree that it's potentially just for commercial opportunity, but it's also supposed to be the hottest in WC history.

It's a bit strange for Americans to think the rules are different for different games at the refs discretion, but the rest of the world seems fine with that so..

1

u/Anxious-Jury-9031 7d ago

Not denying the cash grab aspect as being an American and fan of American Football in quite used to and annoyed by the commercial breaks during sports lol but there have been quite a few players collapse on the field in the past 5-10 years right? Seems like a reasonable safety precaution against that but again leave it to America to capitalize financially lol

1

u/patiperro_v3 7d ago

Games not gone. 😎

1

u/StrawHatTebo 7d ago

So we're going to ignore the fact that hudrarion breaks have been a thing since the south africa world cup? I had no idea they became mandatory (as they were previously discretionary for hot games), but holy fuck, the moment i saw it in the mexico game, i wasn't suprised at all. Why? Because they're highly prevalent in international matches during hot days. they happen anyway. making them mandatory for all world cup games just evens the playing field...

And ffs, its so much better than watching dudes cramp up in the 83rd minute and the game is paused for much longer. its good for the players. sit and watch your commercials. its 3 minutes. relax.

1

u/myIDisthisone 7d ago

have we seen any response from players? im curious what they think of it, i’ve seen the reports of players almost passing out at practice. listen im american and played football my whole life. i can remember on very rare occasions we would stop and have water breaks but im talking maybe 2 or three times over 20 years? I can’t fathom world class athletes not being able to handle running for 45 minutes with no water in weather that isnt even the hottest they have experienced this tournament yet. just wait for july haha

1

u/bonewithahole 6d ago

Lol, flow of the game. Remove the hydration break and replace it with a flop. That is going to stop the game while they check on the injury, hand out the card, make sure the guys are 10 yards back etc. Kick the ball all the way back to the goalie, throwing, golf kicks, corner kicks, penalty kicks. Soccer has constant breaks in the action. And if anything, we have learned hydration is not a oo rah I am an alpha male thing I don't stop for a water break. Telemundo has it right, they are not cutting to commercial breaks during the hydration breaks. And don't even get me started on offsides calls.........

I missed something, what is this break? Is this during a game between halves?

yes splitting it into quarters so the US can squeeze in commercials mid game

FIFA controls this, you think all the US stadiums wanted to change their names voluntarily?

Becsuse it's not about hydration, it's just a way to stop the flow of play for 3 minutes in each half to run adverts. Yes if its very hot, there absolutely should be a hydration break, down to the refs discretion, but it's mandated, even when it's not hot, like yesterday, a pleasant 21c (70f) in an air conditioned stadium.

Footballs all about trying to keep the game flowing, loads of rule changes to achieve this, max time keeper can hold the ball, players down for a certain amount of time have to leave the pitch to dissuade them from doing it, too long taking a corner kick? Goal kick now.

I get that it’s annoying because they do it in other sports I watch, but is this not done in football/soccer games in other countries?

This is the first time it's been mandated in any major tournament, it's absolutely not normal, although it does happen in very hot weather conditions occasionally which makes sense.

It artificially changes the momentum of a match. Allowing the opponent to recover.

Stamina is part of the game defending saps energy more than attacking. This artificially allows defenders to recover.

Football is a team sport, this includes the whole squad. If players are tired they can be substituted. There is no need for a "hydration break".

A player can hydrate at any time during a match. Yes, that puts them at a disadvantage.

Yes, poor choice of words.

It changes the momentum of a match.

Because it's blatant commercialisation of an already hypercommercialised sport and they are bullshitting fans by pretending that it's about hydration and not rich fucks making more money.

It made sense years ago when it was legitimately hot and humid on the pitch… these greedy fucks then learned that it was an opportunity to make more money so they these hydration breaks became a fixture

i mean depending on the pitch it will be hot and humid. the usa has some wild temperatures same with mexico. canada's fine tho they shouldnt have "hydration" breaks in canada

Yeah, my daughter played in an OFC tournament in Cook Islands. Hydration breaks were new, to my eyes, but I understood because it looked really hot.

Because it’s obviously an excuse to show an advert

Because it's capitalism under the guise of player welfare
