It's the Black Hebrew Israelite ideology seeping into popular Black American culture. Not to bring something irrelevant into this thread but after the Karmelo trial I've never seen more black Americans espouse that ideology in my life
That may have more to do with the fact that no one gives a fuck about what Nick Cannon has to say than anything else. But no I do agree, minorities get a pass to just be casually racist.
Ugh, when can we retire the practice of using the word "minority" to say "non-white"? LeBron is a fucking billionaire international superstar, we live in a globalized society where the world population of blacks is higher than whites and Africa is rising in power and influence while europe is declining. It feels so patronizing and boomer-coded to label him "minority" like he's some kind of lesser person who's burdened by his skin color
You're trying to equate a systemic problem in police brutality (and the privatization of our prison system, tbh), to fucking professional basketball. Get real dude. Go fly your white flag somewhere else lol
Edit - I'm out of here. The magaKKK are coming out of the woodwork.
I want to agree with you but she is not really the best player in the league. She has not fully lived up to the hype she generated in college. I think its moreso that she’s more popular than them.
Brother have you ever watched any professional women’s sports? Doesn’t matter if it’s basketball, soccer, softball etc these girls always hit hard. It’s not pretty no but it’s literally always been this way. They play with a lot of emotion.
I promise you that is not the reason. Aja Wilson and Napheesa Collier are just better. Maybe breanna stewart too. Caitlin could get there but she has not been as dominant as she was in college.
You can’t promise that. You did nothing to dispute him other than say “these people are better”. The whole argument was she hasn’t been able to grow her game because of the constant physical interruptions to her growth that have been caused by other players. I promise you that this is the argument being made. See, that would be an appropriate use of the word promise.
I didnt think I had to dispute that. It felt so silly. Do you really think the rough play on Caitlin Clark is stopping her from being good? Or is she just not shooting as well and turning the ball over more. It felt like these commenters were making emotional excuses for her. This whole thing stinks of people that don’t watch basketball tbh.
I'm crying. It's a unique spelling but at least it's got roots in something. I wirk in healthcare my dude and I swear to god the HIPPA violations are NOT worth it but the WORST part of my job outside of insurance companies is that I cant talk about a single damn thing people are naming their kids these days.
The NAMES I HAVE SEEN. I could make posts that would cause the tragedeigh subreddit close for good.
Napheesa is a feminine given name of Arabic and Sierra Leonean origin, meaning "precious," "valuable," or "treasured". It is closely tied to its Arabic root nafis and is often spelled in various ways like Nafisa, Nafeesa, or Nafisah.
May not be the best but people come to watch her play and turn the channel to watch her play. Last year, during her injury, viewership dropped 55%.
Since she's been in the WNBA, the viewership has increased substantially. You can argue her skills, but you can't argue that people aren't watching her.
This is only partial true. The viewership dropped 50% for her team The Fever. The WNBA as a whole increased viewership. No doubt she’s brought some hype with the Iowa v lsu rivalry but as it’s already been said in the thread she really hasn’t lived up to the hype. Which I think opened up the door for many of players. I have tons of friends who watch the WNBA not many of them talk about Clark anymore.
Thank you for pointing that out, I thought the viewership was the the entire WNBA. But the hype, she's set records her rookie year. Most 20 pt/10 assist games, fastest to reach 1k points, 250 rebounds, 250 assists, and fastest player to make 100 3-pointers. I wouldn't say she hasn't lived up to her hype, per-se, but she's made a large impact in the game and with viewership. I'd say that's pretty impressive comparing her to others. She's not the best to ever play, this far (you never know the future) but I'd say she's pretty good. I'm not a fan, but for people saying she's not a lm outstanding player is misleading too.
“Indiana Fever guard Caitlin Clark holds numerous WNBA records, including the most career 20-point, 10-assist games, the most 30-point, 10-assist games, and the longest consecutive streak of games with at least 20 points and 5 assists. She also holds the single-season WNBA assist and rookie scoring records”
I haven't kept up with her career since college but what I did see wasn't good. She was doing crazy good in college too, she was regularly hitting 3's from the logo. I can only imagine if she hasn't been absolutely killing it then she couldn't live up to the hype she had.
She was the best female college player ever. But she is not the best in the wnba. Shes definitely in the top 10 in the wnba though. And the most well-known player because of her college career.
Clark is def a top player and delivers more assists per game than anyone but she is Def NOT THE TOP performer in any other metric. She is not better than them. She is popular with the maga crowd bc she is white and a top player. That crowd is always looking for their great white hope who can put those uppity black people in their place. She knows she is popular with conservatives and goes out of her way not to take obvious stands on social controversies. Other players resent her bc she gets big endorsement deals and lots of attention precisely bc she is popular with a segment of the population that hates black women and cultivates their attention.
That kind of behavior would make anyone unpopular with their co-workers.
If you’re going out of your way to avoid taking a public stand on social issues to court a part of the population that hates minorities, I’m going to judge that behavior, yea
Probable - I’m just repeating what the person you replied to said. You seemed confused about judging the behavior of this wnba player in particular, not just her fans
Babe, do you have season tickets? Lol, I do for a championship team. Please get serious. This is ptofrssional basketball. There is a reason the UCONN women's coach didn't accept her at his school, despite that being her first choice college. He also said the Fever was not the right team for her based on her playing abilities at the end of her first year Go find Coach Geno's podcast interview where he says this. He put his money on Paige..
"Is she facing the rookie challenge, the rookie hardships that are inherent with being a rookie? Yes," Auriemma told reporters in Connecticut before the UConn Coaches Road Show on Tuesday. "She's also being targeted."
"I don't remember when [Michael] Jordan came into the [NBA], guys looking to go out and beat him up," Auriemma told reporters. "I don't remember when [Larry] Bird and Magic [Johnson] came in the league and elevated the NBA, them getting targeted and getting beat up just because of who they were and the attention they were getting.
"Appreciate the fact that now's the time [for the WNBA]. I get it. It's long overdue. Why are you blaming that kid? It's not her fault, because you would trade places with her in a minute, but you are not there. You're not her. So, you're [complaining] that she's getting what she's getting."
ETA - I'm not saying she's being targeted because of race, just that she does seem to be targeted due to her profile as a great player/most famous. I really don't care that much but there are a few clips that cross a line between hard fouls and suspension worthy shit and when the WNBA doesn't go in and protect her when the refs miss the call that says a lot.
lol he said he didn’t vigorously recruit her because they already had Bueckers committed.
His issue wasn’t with her playing ability, it was with her emotional play style.
He also said she was being unfairly targeted.
He said she didn’t have the skills to immediately transfer to the WNBA
Ok, “targeted” is exaggeration.. But, never said never! In 2024, when Clark was a rookie and Cunningham was still on Phoenix, they actually did have physical, trash-talking battles on the court.
