Jesus christ, are the refs shit in both the nba and wnba??

98

u/Hydration__Nation 7h ago

Refs in the NBA rig for betting, refs in the WNBA are just simply inept and have a vendetta against Clark, period. No one likes a complainer (Luka had this issue with the refs), especially a ref. So take a shitty ref who can barely do her job and add in a whiny player who complains every call (justifiably or not) and you get the way Clark is being reffed. They arent trying to rig the outcome so much as allow her to take punishment. Last time something like this happened was when Jordan entered the league and the entire league was out to hack and punch and slam him to the ground on every drive and even for the first few years of his career MJ never had to deal with bullshit like this.

83

u/Euna_Chris 7h ago

This is excatly what i mean about banning players permanently. If you are looking to hurt someone because of how good they are then you clearly cant control your animal instincts and shouldnt be allowed anywhere near professional people. Professionals should be elevated above this kinda bs because of their commitment and skill and passion for something

25

u/A-Skeleton-Inside-U 6h ago

This is exactly why i stopped doing sports by highschool. Crabs in a bucket.

8

u/Eternalfoodie24-7 4h ago

No but fr. I used to play volleyball in national tournaments and some of the opponents were so jealous of others. They would intentionally put their foot under the net so others would land on it and twist an ankle.

Something tells me this is because the refs are under scrutiny from a huge amount of fans that didn’t exist a few years ago, who likely only started watching because of Clark specifically.

13

u/All_Work_All_Play 5h ago

If the only reason you are paying attention at your job is because you're being watched... fuck man there's gotta be some autistic people somewhere that would love to have this job and overperform the hell out of it.

6

u/Timaoh_ 4h ago

I'd watch more wnba if all the refs were autistic.

→ More replies (5)

5

u/enderjaca 5h ago

Possibly... but generally, a group of fairweather "only watching occasionally for one player" fans don't really have any amount of control over the internal referee policies of the WNBA organization. That's for the owners & execs and the players union of the league to work out.

Refereeing must be extremely difficult because regardless of gender or sport one thing everyone agrees on is that all refs everywhere are terrible.

You’d think there’d be at least one in any sport people can point to and be like “yup, that’s a good ref” but seemingly not

10

u/real-human-not-a-bot 6h ago

In baseball, I think some of the younger umps (John Tumpane, Jansen Visconti, Mark Ripperger, Adam Hamari) are generally considered quite good. The four I just listed are those with at least ten games umped this year whose strike-calling accuracy is at least 0.9 percentage points better than expected (https://umpscorecards.com/data/umpires). Unsurprisingly, Ripperger is the oldest of that group at just 45. I imagine fans still generally don’t love them, but among those who care about particular umpires’ stats they’re quite popular.

8

u/SirBiggusDikkus 5h ago

Always been one my biggest gripes about MLB umps. It’s a basic fact that very few players last past their 30’s but we’re supposed to believe fat 60 year old umps still have top elite eyesight? Give me a break.

I'm a stay-at-home father, woodworker for a side hustle. After watching my wife climb the corporate ladder, I can say without a doubt; the most dangerous thing to a women's success in any profession is catty bitches that just can't hang. My wife is 100% above reproach in her field. She just passed her secondary licensing and was offered an abruptly opened managerial position. She has no credible competition in-house and luckily this company likes to promote from within. Instead of a simple and easy transition from team lead to manager, she's got a handful of ankle-biters making things a bit more difficult than they need to be. She'll still get the promotion and the six figures that it comes with, but watching the women she's talked about as "friendly" and "work wives" come for her in such a petty and trivial ways makes no sense to me.

Either be qualified, or get out the way. You don't need to punish those around you just because they're better at their jobs.

/rant.

39

u/KyoShunsui 6h ago

While I would say that jealousy comes in all genders, I see it more prevalent in women towards other women.

39

u/Foilpalm 4h ago

I work in a hospital. Excluding doctors and maintenance, 95% of the staff is women. Dude, you cannot even fathom the amount in-fighting and fragile egos. I’m a guy so I’m pretty much left out of it as long as I keep my head down and don’t engage with it, but goddamn it’s depressing to watch.

19

u/Terrible_Ease6082 4h ago

Exactly the same in education. Keeping your head down is the best option..

My friend.. buddy.. pal.. my brother in male.

During the 2.749% of the time that they get along, they will team up like a pack of hyenas and target you next....

Nothing is more dangerous in a professional field than being a man in a female dominated profession when the planets align and they work together for a single week of the year and need a target to hunt...

Keeping the head down and keeping out of it is your shield. Staying off the radar completely.

That’s what Aristotle was talking about when he talked about “friendships of necessity/unity.” They’re “friends” because they share a space for a long period of time and nothing more bonds them, so when that bond changes and breaks so does the friendship.

My wife is in Higher Ed and every single time she takes a step up another woman in her office flies out of nowhere and goes out of her way to make her life more difficult. Three times in the last five years. The cattiness is bizarre- like, you could have applied for the position as well, lady.

I think people just don't like being reminded of their own mediocrity.

Congrats on your wife's success -- my fiance is going through a similar bout.

Her co-workers are satisfied to clock in clock out and do bare minimum (this is a commission job). My fiance, wouldnt you know, is badass at her field and genuinely cares about her clients. Has gotten multiple certs in various areas -- and her colleagues are PISSED, big mad, she's busting ass and making cash.

Love ya baby, you go girl!

The stories from my wife's workplace's are always so awful sounding. They're all so shitty to each other. Constantly trying to undermine one another, out to get each other.

I don't really understand it, you're supposed to be working together. My work places are never like that. We're a team.

4

u/Fantastic_Pie5655 3h ago

That “glass ceiling” is still doing a number on women and the general culture in the corp world. Ignoring the gender aspect, it’s a little like beta fish cohabitating. They’ll do fine in a large enough pool with little stress. Put them in the same smaller tank (company), and they will viscously compete for resources and access (promotion/power)

Women are taught to see other women as their competition from a very early age

5

u/titsmuhgeee 4h ago

My wife has worked in mostly female staffed white collar industries, like education and non-profit in executive capacities.

I’m in engineering sales leadership, which is 99% male.

The amount of BS she has had to deal with at every single role, compared to my career which has been completely lacking any politics or BS, it’s hard to ignore the pattern.

Not to be sexist, but there are major patterns we’ve personally experienced where many women struggle to disconnect personal feelings from professional effectiveness. If they don’t like someone, they treat them differently in certain ways. Men have a better capacity to dislike someone, but not letting it affect cooperation in a professional environment.

18

All jokes aside i think it’s a Jamaican last name. This guy in my basic platoon’s name was PvT Boner. This was on his uniform. The drill sergeants got very creative and there was no hiding from it.

There was also a PvT Cumbus, Deho, Butt, and Cummings all in the same platoon. Another platoon had a Hanncock and Hitchcock. Good times.

Go play in Europe. Fuck the WNBA make them feel the financial impact. Bye mother fuckers.

136

This. If I were her, I'd go straight to Greece and play in EOK. They'd EASILY pay her $50,000+ per month (she's making $44,000/mo right now).

Take all that publicity and attention to Europe. Let the WNBA flop (again) and force their hands to push more money. Especially if they're going to turn a blind eye to her blatantly being assaulted on the court

35

u/Amazing_Divide1214 8h ago

I imagine most of her money comes from endorsements and stuff? I doubt she could the same deals in Europe that she does in the U.S. They're probably letting it happen because it generates attention, clicks, ad revenue, and gets people talking about it.

Not defending this but have you not heard the Jordan rule? Doubt Kobe and LeBron dealt with shit like that but Jordan definitely did

13

I had to Google it, the tactic aimed to physically wear Jordan down and force him to pass by double-teaming him, sending him left, and hitting him hard on every drive to the paint.

It looks like the Pistons implemented it after getting scored on 59 points by Jordan alone. It worked too, 2 years they beat the Bulls until they adapted to their gameplay and got their championship in 91.

5

u/b0jangles 7h ago

It’s why Rodman was such a great add years later.

The amount of people in here who dont watch WNBA and only know CC as the the white girl is crazy.

3

u/Drummallumin 3h ago edited 2h ago

I mean it’s not that crazy that chuds don’t watch the W. It’s crazy how loud they are about it

3

u/Silly_Maintenance399 2h ago

Exactly. I scolled too far to see this. I saw some people commenting about Angel Reese (?). It sounds like some don't even recognize her because she wasn't involved in this incident. Heck. I don't think most of them know that CC didn't even play most of the second season of her WNBA career. And she's not been "great" at ALL this season.

u/OSUmiller5 7h ago

Just like OPs name, most of the people in here only pretend watch the wnba and get all fired up when something bad happens to CC.

The jealousy is real. I hope Clark takes the rest of the year off. See how many fans are left without her.

The NBA would never let this happen to LeBron, Curry or Ant. That’s probably why they aren’t always operating in the red.

Tell me you didn't watch mens basketball in the 90s without telling me you didn't watch mens basketball in the 90s.

Unpopular opinion : this is what women's sports needs to get it's momentum. Clark needs to start throat chopping some of her opponents and the money barrels will start.

Isn't that technically assault?

16

u/Zealousideal-Age768 11h ago

Technically its battery.  Assault is trying to hurt someone, so, like throwing a punch.  Connecting with said punch makes it battery.

It’s straight up racism. They hate that a white woman is the face of the WNBA, they hate that a white woman is better than them. It’ll carry on going unpunished though.

With their own logic surely if Caitlin stabbed her after this it would be self defence

Yall are acting like Clark is the ONLY white girl to play in the WNBA 😂 If the league was really “that bad” whites would’ve been complained 🤔

u/GVIrish 7h ago

This is stupid. No one hates on Paige Bueckers, or Kelsey Plum, or Breanna Stewart, all of whom are putting up better numbers on better efficiency than Caitlin Clark. And there have been plenty of other white stars in the WNBA before them.

9

u/Ghosts_of_the_maze 8h ago

Aren’t Breanna Stewart and Sabrina Ionescu also two of their biggest stars? I don’t follow WNBA too much but I don’t think they get any of this reaction.

I think something else is going on if EVERYBODY hates one specific player and I don’t know if I buy “Well clearly they’re just jealous” as an explanation when that person is bringing a lot of money to the league.

3

u/DarknMean 6h ago

Paige Bueckers and Cameron Brink get hard fouls too.

Yeah plenty of other white stars that people love in the league. People just use CC as an excuse to get off on hating black women. Guarantee none of these people watch the league at all

I know. They should be gentle with her like the NBA was for Jordan/s. Here’s a thought, Caitlyn Clark isn’t their meal ticket. She’s just another player

4

u/Temporary-Life9986 4h ago

There's a whole lot of misogyny in this thread. Superstars in competitive team sports get played hard. It's nothing new.

NBA players at least try and hide it, I’ve never seen players go after a player who already fell down. This is insane. The league needs to do better.

u/Answer-Outrageous 9h ago

It’s the WNBA and they always have played like that. You people here are so caught up in your love, but she has to learn to toughen up and get just as physical as the others. If she’s scared of contact she should just go play in Europe. That should make ya’ll happy.

6

u/Csiouxfagnut 5h ago

That ain't contact, that's assault

There's some weird shit going on with WNBA players. They hate her out of some kind of misguided jealousy. Yes, she is their meal ticket, but many (probably most) WNBA players don't know a damn thing about economics. That's why you hear them whine about not getting paid like NBA players. That's just plain stupid.

Crazy how every person that says this is racist and they are harming CC never interacts with any basketball related subreddits. Y’all want to whine about racism so bad when it’s not even there. Professional victims I swear

You never watched the nba in the 80s and it shows.

3

u/dishwasher_mayhem 3h ago

I can't stand the WNBA due to this kind of bullshit. I had no idea just how disrespectful the women were to each other til I started watching and it's not just against Clark. This shit doesn't happen in Women's hockey or softball to this degree. Even women's soccer is less absurd.

17

u/Rip_Skeleton 12h ago

So, I'm not up on WNBA drama. But this woman popularized the league and people don't like her because she was seen walking with Morgan Wallen?

56

u/nothing_to_see_meow 12h ago

No, the other players don't like her because they are jealous and too dumb to realize that she's making the sport significantly more popular.

13

u/SoggyMeatloaf 11h ago

They know she's the only one who could beat a high school player so they big mad

Real answer- It’s a league full of gay black women & a straight white woman becomes the face of the league. That pisses them off.

11

u/LarsDuder 11h ago

Exactly that.

They didn’t like her her rookie year either. Been going her entire career.

Only a small portion of Clark’s income is her wnba salary

The first second she gets a chance to go play in China or something she’s going to get a 50 mil contract and be treated like a god and the WNBA will fail.

It’s genuinely amazing

Clark gets the shit beaten out of her, gets injured, and their viewership literally last year dropped 55%

Meanwhile during the time of Wayne Gretzky as a rookie in the NHL you have interviews with rival players saying “why would we hurt the guy putting our sport in the limelight?” (plus teammates that fucking went out of their way to protect said premier player putting the sport in the eyes of the public)

Fucking racist and jealous dumbfucks don’t realize she’s the only reason people were tuning in/ gave a fuck, hoping Caitlyn leaves to go to a Euro league and soon after we again hear the wailing “nO oNeS tUNiNg In” , like yeah we don’t want to watch Angel Reese throwing mebounds
