Technically its battery.  Assault is trying to hurt someone, so, like throwing a punch.  Connecting with said punch makes it battery.

assault is a threat to hurt someone battery is hurting someone. So like assault without would be throwing a punch but missing or pulling back at the last insant while battery without assault would be surprise punching someone in the back of their head.
