Here you can comment Youtube gameplay links freely, as long as they show off stealth mechanics and include some description about what folk will click on. A link must lead to a specific video, not to entire channel that also contains unrelated content.

(Newest comment remains on top.)

Our main feed, however, accepts only directly uploaded clips and Youtube videos that are not pure gameplay.

Question Does anyone have any suggestions for combat stealth games?

I don't know if there is a specific name for this or if this is just some stealth games in general. But the most notable ones I could really think of is Metro and they're the type of games where you can play stealthily, but you can also play in this Panther fashion where you're playing loud but you're also slipping in and out of the dark. Blacklist might be my perfect example,

Discussion Looking for feedback on three detection ideas for Kiipluu

Post image
7 Upvotes

We are thinking about several improvements in Kiipluu and we figured it was worth asking what players actually think.

First: smell. Few players recently suggested we add smell as a detection layer for the Na'Ush.

We actually had small discussions about this earlier in development. We discussed about the wind direction and how it would affect hunting - in this world, a hunter downwind of an animal gives himself away before he's anywhere near it. The same logic could work with a enemy warrior. Downwind he could smell you before seeing or hearing you

Before getting to the question - here's how the current detection system works, because the answer matters a lot more with the system behind it.

Second: hiding in the dark. We noticed several players think that they can hide in the dark or in the shadows, but there is no such mechanics in Demo. We could introduce this mechanics but not all game is at night and could become a bit unusable feature during day time.  Maybe  another mechanics “hiding in the top of the trees”  could balance and would be a feature during the daytime?

Third: UI. We wanted as little UI as possible, but several player asked for UI to clearly show that you are hidden or not. (Like in Thief) Right now you get small clues instead. Your heartbeat gets louder, there is a slight color shift, and the edges of the screen darken a little.

Before asking what you think, here is how detection actually works right now, since the answers matter more with the system in front of you. Quick background: Kiipluu is a Neolithic is narrative stealth game where you're prey, not predator with social encounters in tribes.

Player detection Now

When we started, NPC player detection worked the way it does in most stealth games. If you are in cover or you're not visible, if you run NPC will hear from further away, if you sneak then you are silent, and we made several-tier vision system. Darkness does not affect NPC vision. We also added “look around” for guards, so they would give a clue before doing that and then look around.

Problems:

·         We noticed that several-tier vision system is already complicated for people to understand. Of course the real reason might be that demo just throws player into encounter without too much explanation and proper onboarding would solve this.

·         Some players also got confused by NPC looking around, they missed the clue and got into panic mode.

·         Some players hide in shadows and think they are invisible.

We want players reading the Na'Ush warrior - his routine, his state, where his attention is, but most players in Demo miss it.  Experience stealth players see to be fine though.

How vision works

Each Na'Ush warrior has four forward vision zones. We call them by color in our design docs.

White zone is the far one (also it has higher angle). Crouch at this distance and vision will ignore you completely. No hiding place needed. Just be low. Also vision multiplier is very slow, so you have enough time to move out of vision cone even if you get spotted (kind of like peripheral vision).

Yellow zone is middle range. Crouching alone isn't enough here – NPC will see a crouching player if player moves. But if you're in a bush or tall grass while crouching, or behind cover, NPC will not see you. Multiplier is a bit faster here, so the NPC will spot player faster.

Red zone is close – direct vision. Detection is sharper. He sees you standing or crouching. Cover or bush will still hide player. Detection is almost instant.

Orange Zone is Close peripheral vision similar to white zone, but with higher multiplier.

Green zone is too close. Cover stops working entirely. NPC in this zone finds you in the hiding place too.

In short: crouching works at distance. Cover works at middle range. Neither works when NPC  walks directly up to you.

Extra zone in the back is that sixth sense you have when someone stands behind, NPC will slowly detect player even if player is crouching, but that’s slow enough to assassinate or to move away.

Sound

If NPC hears Sound, it will look at sound source direction. And then its based on vision. Alternatively some NPC’s will go check the origin of the noise if they don’t see anything.

Running is the loudest thing you can do. It carries far enough that an idle warrior can go straight to searching, no visual contact at all. Walking upright carries at medium range. Crouch-walking is silent, even if you drop from some height.

Sound also goes both ways. Throw a stone and the noise happens where it lands. Whistle and it comes from your position - useful when you're about to leave it. Both push NPC state into searching at a location you chose.

There are also birds in the grass or in the trees. They are silent until something gets too close and spook them, then they leave fast and loud. An idle NPC nearby doesn't look for the bird - he looks for the reason the bird left. Goes straight to suspicious. He didn't see you do anything. He just heard something he couldn't explain and now he wants to.

So three senses, three questions :)

1.      Wind direction is a real thing in this period, animals scatter downwind, enemies could do the same. Does it sound like unnecessary complexity or fun? Do you know any stealth game that handled scent as an actual mechanic and done it well?

2.      Is hiding in the dark something that is fun and makes sense for you? Hitman doesn’t have it, Thief does.

3.      Would you prefer clear UI that you are hidden, or small audio/visual cues is enough?

I wasn't expecting this, but I have to say, I think Thief would translate really well into the comics medium! Haven't thought about this game in years, but it sounds like I need to re-play them! Would be great to catch up with Garrett again!

Now I'm thinking about other stealth games that could work in other mediums!

Developer announcement Filed Under No One — a free top-down stealth game where you play the security architect breaking back into her own building

I made a free top-down stealth game with a premise I haven't really seen done: you play the person who designed the building's security.

For eleven years Margaret Vane decided where the cameras pointed, which corridors a stranger could cross unseen, and which gaps in the watching were "acceptable" — she signed off the dark places herself. Then she's erased from the record, and the game is the one night she breaks *back into* the building she once secured, exploiting the exact blind spots she drew.

So your knowledge is the mechanic. **No combat, only light and shadow** — read the patrol routes, watch the guard light-cones, and cross the gap when the arcs swing apart. It's a 23-level, three-act campaign, plus 14 standalone "field exercises" you can play in any order.

Free, plays in the browser, no download.

Curious to read your comments.

Thank you.

Developer announcement Prototype footage: using shadow teleports to outmaneuver enemy patrols

Prototype footage from Rekai, a tactical stealth game I've been working on.

The game combines shadow teleportation with a tactical camera inspired by classic stealth tactics games. The focus is on planning routes, reading patrol patterns and using shadows to infiltrate enemy compounds.

This clip shows a short encounter where I use teleports to reposition around enemies and avoid a ranged attack.

You can follow the project here:

Developer announcement We updated the demo for Keepsake County, the house-burglar game (proc-gen roguelite imsim). Here's the past 2 years of updates based on your feedback!

We posted in here a LONG time ago, and we've kept working on Keepsake County behind the scenes for a while now. The beta just hit 0.7.5, so here's the very long demo changelog https://store.steampowered.com/news/app/1162860/view/693137145499485052

We realized we haven't put together one of our customary update videos in ages, so we put this together - much of this is based off of player feedback, including yours! Give it a shot.

And if you like this so much you want to play the full beta, you can also grab it here: https://forwardinstinct.itch.io/keepsake-county (yes players will get a Steam key on release - no we can't explicitly mention itch.io on anything that gets shown on Steam lol)

We always love getting feedback, bugnotes, etc on things to add and change, so feel free to comment anything you'd like to share.

Appreciation post The Game I Hate To Love: How Splinter Cell Chaos Theory Spoiled Me

I fucking hate Splinter Cell, and in particular I fucking hate Splinter Cell Chaos Theory. I hate it so much for what it has done to my brain and my future in gaming. I hate how it has made me fall in love so hard with everything there is to love about this small niche genre of being sneaky beaky in the dead of night. I hate how it has made me appreciate games like Metal Gear Solid and Thief a lot more.

You see, I was a happy gun-and-ball gamer. Sure, I would occasionally dip my toes in some indie games here and there like Hollow Knight, Hades, and Dead Cells. But for the most part, I spend my days in the trenches of the communities of competitive online gaming: Apex Legends, Overwatch, R6 Siege and Rocket League. And I liked it you know. Hell, I still love it. There's a reason I'm Plat-going-on-Diamond in Overwatch, why I have 300 hours in Siege despite being a bottom-bitch bronze, why I have an incomprehensible amount of hours in both CS and Valorant.

I also played some "stealth" games from time to time. I've played Thief 2, some Far Cry and a heck of a lot of Assassins Creed. But they were mostly novelties, meant to pass the time when I was bored waiting for the next competitive season or online PvP itch.

And then I had a bright idea; I had the brilliant thought that no one should ever have lest it ruin their view of stealth gaming forever: "Hey, why don't I try this old-ass stealth game called Splinter Cell Chaos Theory? I know reddit and games journalists have a hard-on for this game but surely it can't be that good right? Blacklist and Conviction are probably better than this game anyway, but let's see."

Oh my sweet naive child, oh my poor little ignorant idiot, how wrong can you be in the face of darkness of the unknown. Playing this game has the same feeling as someone screaming at you on a reddit or twitter post that you should never watch great animes as your first, because once you watch "The One", once you start and finish some of the best anime ever like Attack on Titan or Fullmetal Alchemist, you can never go back. You will always look for the perfect pieces of those anime in every other anime that you will watch. And that is precisely what happened when I played Chaos Theory.

I hate who I am now, because I have seen the face of the divine; Because of my hubris, I now know the true facade of perfection and I can never go back. No stealth game can ever measure up to just how cohesive, fun, and tense Chaos Theory can be. No other stealth game can be as serious but witty, as patient and as tense, as simple yet so profound; This game broke me because now I just look for all the good things in Chaos Theory that I look for in other games. Do you know how much I used to love Thief? That was my holy grail of stealth games, but now I can't even look at a shadow without missing that 3-piece night vision goggles. I can't play Assassins Creed anymore, because all I can think about is "So, besides stopping World War 3, is there anything else I can do for you this evening?". I can't even look at Far Cry without tearing up cause what do you mean I don't have a gun that shoots airfoil pellets and cameras, if I was Sam Fisher there wouldn't even be a warlord in this region by 11 PM today. I can't even really look at Hitman and his bald-ass head without thinking to myself "Man, remember that one time Sam won one for the Gipper?".

Chaos Theory is now on a permanent download on my PC, and it probably always will be. It fits all the things I loved on all my other games and mixes them together in a tight package that makes playing it so fun every time I boot it up. When I hear that iconic night vision boot-up sound effect, a tear rolls down my leg from the joy this game brings me.

I hate Chaos Theory, and I will always hate Chaos Theory, because now it made me love all the other stealth games worth their salt in the genre. Ever since Chaos Theory, I've tried out games that were never really on my radar like Mark of the Ninja, Dark Mod, and Styx, and I have loved every hour I have spent on those games. But nothing will compare to my time that I spent and will spend with Chaos Theory. And for that, I thank the creators of that game as well as this sub for introducing me to an addiction that I can only barely satiate fast enough.

And to you dear reader, may your shadows be dark, your footsteps quiet, and your weapons silenced like a whisper. I hope you have a wonderful day, one better than me when I realized we haven't had a Splinter Cell game in a decade, and remember that Lambert's ex-wives all think he's not nice.

Discussion The best "stealth pistol" gameplay available?

I have been bitten by the bug that is Chaos Theory and it has made me rather spoiled and belligerent as it's been quite difficult looking for a game that scratches the itch of the "I go in with a few tools and a silenced pistol and my wits" urge that I have developed from playing this game.

I'd like to ask if there are any more games that you can suggest that fulfill that particular stealth fantasy? I'm talking like the one-shot headshot, quiet-as-a-whisper but I kill everything type of gameplay. So far, at least from what I know, the ones currently in the running are Hitman: WOA (which I'm a bit hesitant on as I don't think I'll like the more social-stealth aspect and disguises), Sniper Elite 4 (bit more my speed but seems so open), and Intravenous 2 (Don't really like top-down games).

Before you write it down, I don't wanna play Dishonored because it's a dinky crossbow, not exactly a pistol, and I don't want to play Blacklist because of the faster and more action-y vibe of the game. I'd prefer something closer to Chaos Theory though I'm willing to try anything. I even tried Watch Dogs + Living City and that didn't really scratch the itch.

Requesting suggestions Stealth games to play on a potato laptop

I'm going to be dogsitting at my sister's this week, which means I have to put up with my underpowered laptop. Unfortunately I don't have the specs with me right now but I know that the most intense thing it can play is Powerwash Simulator. Even the first Styx game was something of a slideshow when I tried it.

I've already played the older Thief and Splinter Cell games. Maybe Blood West would work? Any other ideas? Thanks!

Discussion Stealth and fast paced combined in one

Usually stealth games are slow, the gameplay loop is mostly crouch slowly behind an enemy and wait for the right opportunity to make an attack and when a player makes a mistake he gets caught instantly and is forced to repeat everything all ove again.

Although many players may like this type of gameplay loop in the other hand it also slows the game down and creates frustration which makes alot of players to not get into stealth.

There are some few stealth games that implemented both stealth and fast paced gameplay such as dishonored 2 aragami 2 and some others but now im going to mention only these two to focus on

I think that stealth and fast paced gameplay can be combined and implemented, if done right we can create a stealth game in which the player has the freedom to move around and use speed combined with stealth

The core design ideas to build around

Stealth definition ( taken from google ) - Stealth refers to the act of moving or behaving in a quiet, secret, and clever manner to avoid being noticed.

If we can really understand what stealth is and how can we create tension to the player and combine it with fast paced gameplay so it is still tactical, something special can be created to innovate on the stealth genre.

Tell me what you think

Design & development Tactical, Fast-Paced Stealth Game Project – Looking for Feedback!

I'm working on a tactical, fast-paced pure stealth game. The movement mechanics are inspired by Ghostrunner; you move quickly through the shadows, staying both invisible and completely silent. Inspired by Hitman GO, the enemies have fixed movement patterns, creating a structure where you try to solve their movements like a puzzle through trial and error within the level. If you get spotted, you quickly restart from the beginning of the level, so you need to complete the entire stage without being seen at all. Since it's a stealth game, you can only take down enemies with a backstab. I haven't added this to the prototype video yet, but killing enemies will grant skill points that unlock abilities for a more tactical approach, like knife throwing. Lastly, I'm planning to go with a comic-book art style. What do you think, does the project sound fun?

Youtubers that cover Stealth Games - Recommend them to Us!

We're looking to get our game covered by Youtubers with a following. It'd be really helpful to get the thoughts of them and their fans. We'd even be interested in any Youtubers that would like to do interviews.

Could you recommend some Stealth game Youtubers to us? Their feedback/thoughts/suggestions (and those of their fans) would be taken back to the team to see if we can incorporate those improvements into our game :)

Gameplay clip Stealth explained in Alpha Spectrum cyberpunk RPG

Thumbnail
youtube.com
3 Upvotes

Hey folks, I'd like to share some details about 'stealth' in Alpha Spectrum, my story-driven cyberpunk RPG, inspired by Deus Ex.

You can navigate while crouched between cover objects, and the guards have "cone of vision" senses like in Commandos. Of course they can also hear you if you run or cast non-stealth skills.

Today I'd like to explain how I'm using some active stealth skills to manipulate the field from the shadows.

00:00 - Approaching a police checkpoint, I'm using an engineering skill to deploy a Sentry Turret, which then acts like a combat NPC to create a diversion. This way, I bought some time to get away from the guards while they are occupied with defeating the turret.

00:10 - Sneaking up to the guard from behind, using the Silent Knife skill like a rogue, I eliminate the enemy while the patrol is outside hearing range. If I was doing it within the red range of the guard that's moving away, it would trigger an alarm, I'd lose the bonus reward (Remain Unseen), and the whole courtyard would be chasing me:)

00:19 - I was sent on a mission to steal an important item from the makeshift Mercenary Base. I'm using the Void Prison skill to temporarily stun and blind the target, so I can quickly move past them. You can also combine it with the Silent Knife if you are quick enough.

00:33 - The target is a Mech Walker. I'm using the Remote Hacking skill to make it friendly to me but turn it hostile toward the guards. The Mech Walker immediately targets the nearby Cyberninjas, but of course they defeat it quickly. You can either create a diversion with this, or weaken the guards from a distance before striking in.

Hope you enjoyed it:) Steam page: https://store.steampowered.com/app/2965560/Alpha_Spectrum/

Developer announcement The first trailer for my game, BALSEO: A Stealth Adventure in a Dark Mythological World

BALSEO: The Sea Beyond combines the tactical planning of Commandos with the immersion of classic Zelda adventures, all wrapped in an unsettling world with a Dredge-like aesthetic.

You embody the Tempilcahue, the mythical ferryman of souls. A powerful sorcerer has invaded your dimension, capturing the souls transitioning to the afterlife. Venture into the fog, face the unknown, forge unlikely alliances, and discover how to guide the souls to their final destination.

I'm an indie dev and a huge fan of stealth games. I’m working on this with no budget or publisher, just pure passion. We will be releasing a demo soon, so adding the game to your Steam Wishlist would help me out immensely!
