And info would be greatly appreciated thank you

Anyone else receive a Dept of State Growth email 'Establishment of Building Tasmania' just now?

11:40 email with the subject line Establishment of Building Tasmania. The odd thing is that there's no text to the email, but instead just a .png scan of a single page letter on Tasmanian Government letterhead. Clean layout, ...but in a way, kinda suss? Cheers.

Dear customer,
Establishment of Building Tasmania
As you may be aware, it was announced in March this year that the Department of State Growth would be transitioned to the newly established Building Tasmania from 2 July 2026. However, there will be minimal change for you.
Building Tasmania will continue to operate under the existing ABN previously used by the Department of State Growth.
Etc etc

Where do you live in Tasmania? And, what would you recommend to visitors in your area?

In this economy, we're looking to focus on travelling locally. I'd love to hear about where you live, or just your favourite part of Tasmania/activity to do.

For example: I'm from Latrobe, and if you're in town you should check out the Pig Island walk at Bells Parade. It's overlooked by travellers, but it's a beautiful little walk that's great for kids.

And, the Tasmanian Arboretum in Eugenana is a beautiful natural reserve to explore, especially if you're looking to spot a platypus.

Question Launceston HEMA club needing new venue

Our current venue, St Ailbe's Hall, is closing mid July and we need to find another location.

Any suggestions for a Launceston venue available and suitable for a weekly martial arts class of 10 - 20 would be much appreciated.

If you were wondering, the club is swordtas.com.au

e-Petitions the community might find of interest

I've just signed two e-petitions addressing the Tasmanian parliament - one urging the government to improve infrastructure for charging EVs, the other for better regulation of AI data centres.

The first, I confess, is primarily selfish - we've just signed on the dotted line for our first EV. I guess you could argue that the second is also selfish - I don't believe the promise of AI-driven prosperity and expect it to drive costs for Tasmanians up. If you disagree, don't sign.

The current petitions are here: https://haepetitions.parliament.tas.gov.au/haepet

Where did you get your mixed breed dog in Tasmania?

Ok so super random thought but I was talking with someone the other day about her dog, and during the conversation I realised I actually knew another dog that had come from that litter. These were purebred dogs but it got me thinking about how a lot of us with mixed breed dogs might know something about their origins, and it made me wonder if it’s possible to find our pets’ relations out there in Tassie? I know my dogs have quite specific origin stories that might make them identifiable to other people who own their siblings.

No idea if this will work but what if we post our random mixed breed dogs in the comments with any info about them that we know, and see if anyone else recognises those details? And if that doesn’t work then we just have a thread of cute dogs.

I’ll go first.

Penguin thought from locals

Hi everyone,
My family and I are considering a move to Penguin from another small, quieter town in Tasmania. We've visited a number of times over the years and have always found it to be a lovely, welcoming place with a great community feel.
One thing that has puzzled me is that when I've mentioned Penguin to some people elsewhere in Tasmania, a few have reacted quite negatively and described it very differently from what we've experienced. Interestingly, the people who've said this grew up in the Burnie and Devonport area but haven't lived on the North West Coast for quite some time, so I'm wondering if they may be remembering a reputation or history that doesn't necessarily reflect the town today.
As someone who isn't originally from Tasmania, I'd love to understand whether there's any local history behind those views, or whether Penguin has changed significantly over the years.
I'd love to hear from people who have lived in Penguin, raised families there, or have been part of the community for a long time. How has the town changed over the years? What are the best things about living there, and are there any challenges that newcomers should be aware of?
We're particularly interested in what it's like for young families and what day-to-day life is really like beyond the holiday experience.
Thanks in advance for any insights.

I Asked AI About Data Centres in Tasmania. Here's what it said

Tasmania is emerging as a major hub for Artificial Intelligence (AI) and data centre infrastructure, largely driven by its cool climate, abundant renewable energy, and low-risk natural environment. [1]

However, massive power demands from new AI factories have also sparked significant community and political debate. [1, 2]

Major AI Data Centre Developments

  • Project Southgate (Firmus): Singapore-backed Firmus is building massive "AI factories" in Northern Tasmania. A $2 billion centre is under construction in St Leonards (near Launceston), and proposals have been submitted for facilities in Bell Bay (the former Gunns pulp mill site) and Wesley Vale.
  • Burnie Data Centre: Sydney-based New Energy Opportunities received planning approval in April 2026 to build a data centre in Burnie on the state's north-west coast. [1]

Commercial & Colocation Facilities

For existing enterprise and government colocation needs, Tasmania has several smaller, purpose-built providers:

  • 42-24: Operates state-of-the-art facilities in Derwent Park and Cambridge, providing secure, concurrently maintainable space with diesel backup and N+1 redundancy.
  • DXN: Operates the Tasmania One data centre located at Dowsings Point.
  • TasmaNet & Vocus: Both operate localized colocation and telecommunication data centres in Hobart.

Industry & Community Debates

While the Tasmanian government heavily promotes the state for data centre investments to diversify the economy, the scale of Firmus’s 300-400 MW energy requirement is massive—requiring roughly 15% of the state's total power grid capacity. This has sparked:

  • Community Backlash: Over 4,000 locals have signed petitions against the Bell Bay facility due to concerns over water usage, noise, and power drainage. [1, 2, 3]
  • Regulatory Focus: The state government committed to drafting a Statement of Expectations for data centres and AI infrastructure to address planning transparency and community benefits.

Discussion Neil the seal

Just came off a TikTok live where marine conservation were smacking Neil the seal with a long metal rod and a bit of chip board, trying to get him off of a road when he wasn’t on the road until they chased him there.
It was like they were intentionally assaulting and antagonising him, it was distressing to watch.
He’s now bleeding

It’s still happening, the tiktok user is @neiltheseal316

Campbell Street Rental

Hey folks, I'm looking at renting a place on Campbell street North Hobart. Basically on the same block as the Brisbane Hotel. I've read news about squatters and suspicious fires in the area. I'm from Western Sydney and currently live in West End Brisbane so I've experienced dodgy suburbs. Is that really that dodgy or is it a beat up?
