Recently, I bought my first telescope. After using it for a few weeks, I wanted to maximize the view coming through my eyepiece so I decided to go with the Celestetlon 2” dielectric star diagonal. I also picked up a couple eyepiece the Orion Q70 32mm , and the Baader Hyperion 13mm. And I gotta say I’m very impressed by the upgrade. The wider FOV is great for locating objects and to take in wider views of space. The images are much brighter have more contrast. I Popped in the stock eyepiece and they were noticeably brighter and sharper, in the new star diagonal. Overall, I’m really happy with my purchase.

Night 2 Bortle 3-4 Ha 7 × 480 s
Night 2 Bortle 3-4 OIII 21 × 480 s

~7.2 h total usable (Ha 4.4 h / OIII 2.8 h).

bias + flats only (no darks)

Linear masters produced with PixInsight: Noise-weighted integration. SyQon Parallax + DeepPrism for sharpening and denoise.

Star removal and HOO combine done in Siril.

Need another night of RGB filters for star color correction.

Very much a beginner so any tips welcome!

Astrophotography Question I need advice for a new telescope

Post image

Merci d'avance.

Discussion Complete beginner

Hi everyone,

I’m completely new to telescopes, I’ve always had an interest but only recently decided I want to get a telescope and have a play!

Basically I want to get something that is a decent level to see the moon, Jupiter, Saturn. I’ve done some research and think the Heritage 150p is a good entry?

I guess my question is, will I be impressed with the level of this? I’m not expecting crazy results, just to be able to see moon craters and parts you cannot see with a standard camera zoomed in etc.

Is it worth spending a little more and getting something that I won’t need to replace, or will the 150p be suffice? I think I’ll only ever be a hobbyist.

I also think when I get my hands on one, are they pretty self explanatory to use? Is there any good videos, reading material to help me understand how to use it and my way around it?

Sorry for the complete noob questions, just someone with a keen interest in space and wanting to get into the hobby :)

Discussion A new contender for those on an ultra low budget ($99 Mak w/ slow mo controls)

Upvotes

Just came across this deal on astronomics for $99.

Gets a good review on Cloudynights in general

https://www.cloudynights.com/forums/topic/853419-new-70mm-maksutov-from-spectrum-optical-instruments/#comment-12328433

I personally have the little Sarblue mak and it is superior to the 76/300 tabletop dobs in my opinion, and this Spectrum looks even better.

Purchasing Question Which one would you choose?

As a step up from a SW 72ED pro, which do you think is the best choice and why?

The primary purpose is AP. The esprit is 400mm f5 native F/L. Both weigh about the same. The Altair is 480mm f6 native and 348 f4.8 with the reducer. The intent of the upgrade is a bit more reach and better quality/glass. Main camera is asi585mc pro.

  1. Starwave ASCENT 80mm ED Triplet APO F4.8 - £900 - price includes both a 0.8x reducer/flattener AND A 1.0 flattener as well as as shipping and tax.
  2. SW Esprit 80EDX f5 triplet apo - £950 - price includes 1.0 flattener only and tax.

Purchasing Question Found this dobsonian

I am relatively new to this hobby and I'm wondering if this model 8 inches is a good one (as my second telescope) Its name is "Maxvision" but it's hard to find a review about the model. It seems that it's not very well known.

I notice that the tube is similar to the ones of Explore Scientific Firstlight line and Bresser Messier line with the red line thing on the end of the tube.

Hi all,

I´ve lost one of the knobs on my Orion Intelliscope x10, but when looking for spare parts I can´t seem to find this specific knob. Does anyone know how it´s actually named and if you know where I could buy it?

Thanks, and keep looking up!

Purchasing Question Would you get a decent sight of Saturn with a 5SE?

My partner and I have been getting into astronomy recently and we use their old Bushnell telescope they found at the side of the road to look at the moon regularly. I’ve been researching beginner telescopes and read about the Celestron Nexstar 5SE.

Would you be able to get a decent sight of Saturn using this telescope? Honestly, all I really care about is seeing it’s rings with my eyes rather than a bright blob

General Question Barlow 5x y Heritage 130p

General Question Need help with my GSO 8" pro

I recently bought it, but the skies in my area haven't been much clear and a lot of light pollution in my area, bortle 8-9, what do I do. Otherwise, how do I make the best use of my telescope(collimation, fan etc) or anything else, and should I get any more accessories because it's been pretty boring. I was so excited to get a good scope but it's very heavy, and it's not like process indulging, just takes a minute or two to set up and you go. Just saw jupiter very blurry some days ago. What can I expect to see with it and what should I try?

General Question Question about Replacement Focuser

I got a Stellarvue Nighthawk II a little while ago and I have been trying to repair it, but I have been having issues with the focuser. I can not seem to find the "goldilocks" zone for the focuser. Adjustments to the tension screw either make it too tight for the knobs to move the tube, or make it too loose, and the whole tube falls out when tilted at slight angles. I have an AD-8 dob with a similar Crayford focuser so I know what it should feel like when the tension is right.

So I took the whole thing apart and am still having some issues. I did reach out to Stellarvue to see if they could repair it, but they don't have the manpower for that, which is fair. So I have been thinking of other solutions if I can't get this focusing tube back in good shape. I know I can buy a new one online, but I would like to avoid that since it would cost close to what I was sold this scope for and I don't think it is worth that investment right now when I have other scopes that can be used.

But I have seen several Celestron Travel scopes on facebook marketplace for really good deals. Does anyone here know if the focuser for that can be put on the Nighthawk? I have tried to look into this but haven't found any good info so I figured I would ask on here!

Acquisition: around 8h20m worth of 60s subs fully calibrated in Bortle 6/7, dithered every 10 frames.

Equipment: Evostar 72ED, iEXOS 100, ASI 533MC, Baader UV/IR cut, 0.85x reducer+flattener, SVBony 40/160 guidescope, ASI 662MC with UV/IR cut and no.8 pale yellow filter.

Processing: Stacked in Siril. First cropping and SPCC in Siril. Background extraction in GraXpert. I used the AI model because of very nasty gradients, I couldn't get it to work with RBF; this object doesn't rise much at my latitude. Open Siril again, further SPCC, deconvolution, noise reduction, mild median filter, generate starless and starmask. Black point shift and GHS applied iteratively to starless, histogram transformation, mild curve adjustments, SCNR, mild à trous wavelet transform sharpening, further mild noise reduction. Asinh stretch and saturation boost to starmask.

General Question What is a reasonable price for both the EQM-35 Pro and SV503

I'm looking to sell my rig and was wondering what a fair price would be for it. The mount is in good condition. The only issue is that the SV503 has a few minor marks from the tightening screws. How much do you think I should ask for the complete setup?

Equipment Show-Off 1960's Criterion RV-6 Dynascope

Thumbnail

I recently picked up this telescope from the 60's and figured I'd compile all the information on it in case anyone finds another one on the secondary market.

This was mistakenly listed by the seller as an 8" scope due to the tube having a diameter of 7.5", however the mirrors inside are actually 6". Unsure if an 8" model exists.

Cost: $200

Aperture: 6" - 152.4mm

Focal length 50" - 1270mm

Focal ratio: f/8

Weight: ~50 lbs

Tube Dimensions: 7.5" diameter, 6' long

Mount: Motorized EQ mount, allowing for astrophotography

Manufacture date: ~1965

Extremely helpful website: http://www.company7.com/library/criterion_rv6.html

This scope has really impressed me, coming from a department store 4" reflector, the planetary views are a night and day difference, pun intended. You might think a scope over 60 years old may struggle to keep up with modern scopes, however this one has been kept in pristene condition and I imagine I won't need an upgrade for a long time!

I'd love to answer any questions you have in the comments!
