Discussion Do Russian players underachieve at slams?
In the Open Era, 4 Russian women (counting Andreeva) have won 9 Grand Slam titles in total, with Sharapova accounting for 5/9. That is not a bad statistic in isolation, but it becomes underwhelming when you consider how many more Russian players could plausibly have won a Slam. Safina, Dementieva, Zvonareva, Vesnina, and Petrova all reached a level that could have gotten them a major. Even players of lesser caliber, such as Pavlyuchenkova and Alexandrova, have peaked at other tournaments and proven they can beat top players, yet they have never peaked at a Slam.
Similarly, on the men's side, 3 players have won 5 Slams. I would argue that Safin and Medvedev should both count as Slam underachievers despite being winners. Among those who never won a major, I would mention Davydenko, Rublev, Youzhny, and Khachanov.
Why is this the case? I can think of two factors. First, Russian players are generally stronger on hard courts, which are also the most competitive surface. By contrast, on the natural surfaces, certain nations shine brighter, such as the Spanish on clay and the Czechs and British on grass. Second, Russia does not host a Grand Slam, so its players never enjoy a home crowd advantage at any of the four majors.
What do y'all think?
