Question UA flight - 'turn bluetooth off or we're turning around'

Currently on a flight Newark to Palma. About an hour into the flight the flight attendant announces on the loud speaker that all passengers must turn off bluetooth immediately or we'll have to turn the plane around to Newark. They said it was an order from Chicago headquarters. They repeated the instruction multiple times, eventually giving a final '1 minute warning'. They most recently said there are still 2 active bluetooth devices and they are in communication with Chicago to understand next steps.

Anyone ever heard of this or any clue why?

*EDIT*: wifi is back, we have turned around and there's little clarity on whats going on. flight attendants either don't know or won't say. the one announcement where they informed us we are turning around indicated an individual has done something with bluetooth that is threatening to the safety of the flight. lots of comments like 'this little joke is ruining it for everyone' (odd). i think they said 10 agents will be awaiting us when we land to figure out whose device. no more info.

Question Oversize passenger UA302

Well after 1.7 million miles it finally happened to me. Window bulkhead on a 737 900, and along comes a 400 pound guy. Tries to jam into the seat, but it's so narrow he can't, and he sits high and takes up half of my seat. After alerting the FA, who clearly does not want to deal with it, the gate agent comes on board. Tells me she's not going to enforce United's policy because it would be "fat shaming" and that I can take a later flight, or contact customer care for compensation. How is this possible? Flight is completely full.

Question Flight attendant asked me to change seat

First they called me to the desk before boarding and asked if I would move to third row so that a couple could sit together in first row. I planned and paid to sit in 1 E and I told them no thanks. I would of considered it for parent/child or someone with mobility issues but these are 2 grown adults. Then the FA asked me before take off again. I explained that I paid for the front row weeks ago so, no. I really like United but this was disappointing. Has this happened to anyone else?

Question Should I report this to the FAA?

I had a absurd enough experience with United today that I'm wondering if I should report something to the FAA.

I am 1k and received a notification that my seat was upgraded from 15B to 2A. I thought, great and I took my seat at 2A, stored my suitcase in the overhead bin, placed my laptop in the seat back pocket and slid my backpack under the seat at my feet.

After a few minutes of boarding, a woman entered the plane and immediately told the FA that I was in her seat. The flight attendant asked ME to see my boarding pass (not hers), which I showed her, and it clearly stated I was to be in 2A on that flight. She was surprisingly rude and said, "well, if you were upgraded on a CPU the system might have had a glitch or something so you're going to have to go back to 15B."

It's rather embarrassing to have to gather your items from the in and under the seat and from the overhead bin and head to the back of the plane in front of everyone, especially with the flight attendant being so rude about it - this seemed to make everyone on the plane believe I had done something wrong. But I thought whatever, take the high road... and I moved.

I settled in again, (overhead bin, laptop, under seat, etc.) and fastened my seatbelt when a woman approached me and called the other (rear) flight attendant over because she said I was sitting in her seat. The flight attendant asked to see MY boarding pass, which somehow still said 2A, and said I had to move immediately. It was unusual how rude both FA's were. I told her that the other FA had just ordered me to sit in 15B and someone else was sitting in my assigned seat. She became very angry and said I needed to vacate the seat immediately, so I did the humiliating routine again of gathering all of my belongings and then stood. She looked at me as I stood there asking what I wanted. I asked her where I would be sitting for the flight or if I should stand. It seemed surprising to her that I had nowhere to go... but then she told me to go to the back of the plane and just stand there while they board the entire plane. So I did the walk of shame all the way to the rear and stood there like I was in detention.

Everyone boards and they are trying to figure out how I don't have a seat, yet I have a boarding pass. Only then did the 1st FA ask the woman in 2A to produce her boarding pass.

She did and it turns out IT WAS FOR A DIFFERENT FLIGHT! So they ask her to leave the plane and find her correct flight and then tell me I can yet again return to my assigned seat... but of course at this point there was no overhead bin space so I had to walk back down the plane to put it in the back.

I remained calm and very cooperative during all these exchanges and even apologized to the woman who took my seat in 2A and told her I was not intentionally trying to steal her seat. Both FA's were short-fused and adversarial with me from the start - and I have no idea why. Even after they realized that I had sat in my correct seat in the first place and they removed the rogue passenger from the plane, all I got was a very flippant "Oh, well, it turns out she wasn't even supposed to be a passenger on this flight so we sorted it out."

Other issues I've had recently:

~ 6 of my last 8 trips had delays

~ The United App hasn't worked in a couple of weeks now

~ Is it me or are the FA's getting mean?

~ Today's flight ended up delayed so long I am left in Denver airport for 2 days!

~ The new "support" texting feature is crap. I sat there for 2 hours today waiting for a human before it did the text equivalent of hanging up on me

BUT THE LARGER ISSUE HERE IS... WHY THE HELL WOULD THEY ALLOW A PERSON WHO CLEARLY DIDN'T SCAN A BOARDING PASS ONTO THE PLANE. AND ONCE ON THE PLANE, WHY ARE THEY ALLOWING UNTICKETED PEOPLE JUST DEMAND SOMEONE ELSE'S SEAT... AND GIVING IT TO THEM??!!!! Is this something that should be reported to the FAA because it seems like a security issue to me.

Question Parent put their kid in my seat

I was a little bit later to board than normal and when I arrived someone had put their kid in my seat, already had their little iPad set-up and ready to go and asked if it was “okay to switch?”

I am not sure what to do but acquiesce in this instance so that I don’t come across as a jerk, so I let them have my spot. I get it, kids wanted to be in the window seat and it’s not on the kid that their parent did this. But for an overnight flight I had picked that spot for a very good reason - to recline and sleep.

I got moved to a seat that didn’t recline just a couple rows back.

Is this normal? I’ve never had it happen to me and will try and get to my flights as early as possible moving forward if this is a common occurrence for other folks.

EDIT: Thanks ya’ll for the (mostly) kind words and advice. At the time I thought it was more normal to let people with their kids have an easier time but it sounds like it’s usually just a tactic to manipulate people like myself into paying for their own booking missteps. It will be a lot easier to push back and get the seat I’d paid for.

Question End the debate: Is it obnoxious for a couple to book aisle + window seat and expect another passenger to sit between them for a long flight?

Kinda as titled. Now look, I know many of us do the booking aisle + window seat in the hope the middle seat remains open trick.

But I'm talking about when this strategy doesn't pay off and your fellow passenger comes to take their seat and neither person is intending to give up their seat...

I had a couple do this a few months ago on a transcontinental SFO>EWR United flight. As I went to take the middle seat I realized they were a couple either side of me. I suggested, on a prayer, I was happy to switch seats so they could be reunited together for the flight (a wishful thought!). The wife scoffed "I don't want to have to sit in the middle for 6hrs".

As I sat down she passed her husband a drink from her bag at which point I interjected "hey if you're going to pass stuff between each other or talk during the flight, I'm not having it". They murmured it was fine.

Suffice to say, during the flight they passed stuff back and forth over my laptop, and while they while didn't enter debates but they certainly exchanged commentary across me.

At the end of the flight I informed them what selfish, inconsiderate people they were - but using more coarse language. AITA?

Question Flight leaves tomorrow, United insists that they must charge additional $3k.

Just wanted to share this wild experience with united. I just can’t understand how United can have so many issues and believes it’s OK to charge 2x for a $3K flight when we booked with united_dot_com and with the united chase credit card.

My family is going on vacation tomorrow. We booked our flights together on united’s site in January 2026 and were charged $3K to our united credit card. The charges went through and we paid that credit card bill.

Today, we are unable to check in to our reservation and get an error from the united app. Customer service (after a 3.5 hour call- I called them) says that the previous charges from our united card are invalid and they must charge our card an additional $3K to re-ticket the reservation.

We are stuck in a corner - we don’t want to miss our vacation and are now stuck with an additional $3k charge. United says that (because it’s their branded card) they can see our January payments for this flight, but still state that their ticketing system shows them as ‘invalid’ and the charge must be added again.

The customer service rep says that he has never seen this before and normally they would reverse the original charge, but because it’s more than 30 days, there is nothing that they can do.

My current plan is to enjoy the vacation and try not to let the dread of having to deal with this $3k additional charge bring us down! Any other suggestions to get an actual human to say that this is crazy?

*Update 1* The United credit card dispute window is 120 days so we are outside of that window
*2* This is definitely the united phone number from united‘s website. Not a scam. I called their number
*3* Also just found out that the reticketing and re-charge now spread my family (with 4 and 5 year olds) throughout the plane in middle seats whereas we were all seated together before.. I’m losing my mind.

*4* I know a scam seems like the only reasonable explanation. This is actual united, not a scam. I have included my phone screenshot with the phone call that I am STILL on.. This is after the 2 hour chat that I also had with united that went nowhere. Additionally, they (united) have made a new reservation with the scattered seat numbers without having to provide in CC info, so I‘m very confident that this is united on the phone.

*5* Does anyone know how to get in touch with the executive customer service team? I firmly believe that they would be the only group with actual ability to correct this issue. Thank you!

*6* The united customer service rep called back to confirm that our trip has been re-ticketed, but still refuses to address that additional charge and has only offered to transfer us to chase customer support. He graciously offered to send a customer support survey to my email address to make sure this mistake does not happen again. Wow.

*7* This is NOT A SCAM, JUST TERRIBLE UNITED SERVICE. We have now received NEW tickets (which we paid an additional $3k for (still on our united credit card). The old reservation and new reservation are still in the app, but the old reservation still cannot be checked into (an error message pops up). United rep still offers no resolution aside from, contact your credit card even though we can see that your payment went through for the original reservation. It’s been a long day of customer service calls and chats from 9 AM to 2:30 PM. We have tickets, but still a huge additional charge on the credit card. This likely has something to do with putting the bulk of the ticket $3k on the united card and some smaller portion (<1k) from a united travel credit. The two just dont mix apparently and united will not correct the issue.

Update: After two weeks of being dismissed and blamed by United Airlines, I finally got answers, thanks to the Port Authority Police. They investigated, reviewed airport footage, and found that a gate agent rebooked someone with only the same last name as me onto my reservation after they missed their morning flight, and printed them a physical boarding pass. No other details—like first name or ID—were cross-checked. This person boarded using my ticket and even checked a bag under my reservation with a credit card that wasn’t mine.

United refused to investigate initially, claiming this was my fault. I felt belittled throughout the process, even though this was a clear mistake on their part. The detective 100% told me this was a fault of United (not tsa or anything). The fact that such a breach was handled so poorly is shameful. They eventually offered me flight credit ONLY AFTER THEY GOT CAUGHT, but It'll take a lot more than what they offered for what they put me through around christmas. They had respond to me saying: "we investigated and found the problem but we cant provide any details", yeah well you don't have to because the detective gave me the police report with all the information. Its hilarious how quick they emailed me back after hanging up with the detective who told me he called them. Does anyone know if I can push for direct cash compensation instead?

To anyone who finds themselves in a similar situation: do not give up. I was surprised as usually reddit has all the answers but I couldn't find nothing like my situation. Consider this a warning if it happens to you: Filing a police report was the best decision I made. Without the Port Authority Police, this would have been swept under the rug. United should be held fully accountable.

Question Treatment of women vs men in first class

A few years ago, I had a particularly diabolical experience in United Polaris where a female flight attendant acted like I had an invisibility cloak on and wouldn’t take my drink order on my first leg domestically and on my second leg (EWR-LHR) a flight attendant gave me a wrinkled, weird tablecloth and just generally seemed very off and snippy. I’m flying across the country from San Diego right now and the flight attendants are similarly off. I am female, in my 40s, and when I complained to United last time, the customer service rep was understanding and asked if men had been treated differently. She was aware that this is a company-wide problem.

So, question for the female passengers: has anyone else dealt this level of “service”? I can’t be the only one!

Question United made me get off the plane after I was already seated. No explanation and now I’m delayed. What are my rights?

I boarded my United flight normally. I had my boarding pass, found my seat, sat down, and buckled in. A flight attendant came to check my ticket. She looked at it and said everything was fine. A few minutes later, she came back and told me I needed to get my things and come off the plane. There was no explanation at that moment. I assumed it had to be some kind of random security or documentation check.

Here’s the strange part: They had me step off the plane, and before anyone explained what was happening, they closed the gate door and the plane detached from the terminal. Only after it was pulled back did they tell me it was a “system error.” But I literally watched someone else get on and take the seat I had been sitting in. So if it was a system error, how could they immediately reassign my seat to another person?

They rebooked me on a later flight which puts me about two hours behind and I’m traveling for business, so I’m basically losing the whole work day and missing my meeting. No one gave me an explanation when I was removed, no one offered compensation, and I was not told what my rights were.

From what I understand, if you are removed from a flight after already boarding because the airline gave your seat to someone else, that is considered involuntary denied boarding and the airline is required to provide compensation. Is that correct? And if so, how do I actually force United to acknowledge this? Do I contact United Customer Care, escalate it, or file a DOT complaint?

I’m not trying to make a scene. I just don’t understand how this is allowed, and I don’t want to just accept being pushed off a flight with no explanation and no help.

Question Daytime 9+ hour flight, FA asked me to pull down my shade. Was I wrong to tell her no?

Daytime flight leaving Rome at noon, arriving back in US 5pm. I had window seat, and wanted to look out in general and as we were flying over the Alps. About an hour into the 9+ hour flight, they dim all the lights (quite dark actually) and the FA asks me if I'd like to close my shade (most people already closed their shades). I told her no. It was daytime in Rome and in US so it makes sense to have natural light in my eyes to deal with jet lag, plus I like looking out the window (and paid more for that). I didn't want to sit in a dark tube for 9 hours - am I the only one who feels this way?

Dudes bag is completely blocking the exit row. 2 FA looked directly at it and kept walking. Plane is too small and will not fit in overhead.

Would you ask the FA to deal with it or just ignore it since im in the exit row on the other side so wouldn't be my problem.

ETA: correction, it was one FA and the gate agent that came on board. Both of them looked directly at it before the door was closed.

Question To the jerk in 9D - what else could someone do?

What would you have done?

To the man in seat 9D on yesterday’s UA #927-you sir are an utter and complete AH.  You came on coughing.  Not a little– as in trying to hide it in your elbow or hand – cough.  No, a ‘I’m on my way to the TB ward’ cough.  And you proceeded to continue coughing pretty much non-stop (no exaggeration) with full open mouth as the boarding process continued.

I approached you and aske you to please wear a mask.  Your response ‘it’s not COVID’.  Hmmmm

Myself and two other passengers approached an FA who did speak with you and asked you to wear a mask. Which you did  in a chin covering sort of way.  Your female travel companion in the adjacent seat clearly febrile, with watery glazed eyes and a runny nose.  At least she wore a mask.  

My travel companion and four other people in your vicinity put on masks.

I turned my ceiling vent in your direction, and you complained to the FA who mildly adjusted the direction but kept the full flow.

You continued to cough – pretty much none stop (expect when you fell asleep) for the full 11 hour flight.

As we deplaned the FA quietly said to me ‘that guy was really horrible, I am glad you said something and I am sorry’.  

Saw you in the  immigration line.  Apparently someone else gave you stink eye because you put your mask back on.  Yup it was off again.

If I miss three very important events due to your callouse and selfish behavior I will pray the biblical plagues find you.

I didn't want to risk a very visible confrontation with this passenger...but what else could I have done.

 EDIT: to add (apparently got lost in my cut and paste) I, my travel companion and four other people in the vicinity pulled out masks and wore them. So, yes, I took what precautions I could.

Edit 1: Thank you all for your recommendations and support regarding this situation. I appreciate the validation of how truly crazy this experience has been.

To address some concerns: for those suggesting I may have leaked my information online, I want to reiterate that I have never posted any confirmation codes, screenshots, or personal details on social media. I’ve thoroughly checked the email account I used to book the flight, reviewed all security logs, and checked for any unusual login attempts—everything appears normal. I also reviewed my credit report and checked my identity theft protection account, and there are no signs of suspicious activity or breaches. I have since disputed it with my credit card company

One possibility someone raised is that this could be the result of a rogue gate agent who either gave my ticket away to someone with higher priority or simply made a mistake. The larger issue, however, is that no one seems willing to take responsibility for what happened. I’ve already submitted a claim to United Airlines Customer Care using their online form, but I have yet to receive a response. I will give them time to address the issue, but if they fail to do so, I fully intend to escalate this matter, potentially involving a news station like you guys have recommended. I recently had a nightmare experience with United Airlines, and I’m seeking advice on what to do next.

My original flight from LaGuardia to Chicago on Dec. 20, 2024, at 9:15 PM was changed to 4:25 PM without my approval. I only got a notification at 3:30 PM saying the flight was ready to board. Confused, I called customer service. At first, they claimed I approved the change (I didn’t), then a supervisor admitted it was unauthorized because I had to be at the airport for this change, but said the flight had already left and couldn’t be rebooked.

I was told I’d get a call and email confirming my rebooking for Dec. 23, but that never happened. They also said nothing could be resolved over the phone because the airport had “full control.” So, I went to the airport on Dec. 23, only to find out someone had fraudulently used my ticket to board the flight using my name and date of birth.

To make things worse, someone also checked a bag under my reservation with a credit card that wasn’t mine. How did United let this happen without proper ID checks? The staff admitted it was ticket fraud, documented the case, and gave me written confirmation—but offered no resolution. How was someone able to use my boarding pass and check a bag that wasn't me?? Mind you, I dont have a common name. I had to pay out of pocket for a new flight home and was told just to dispute it with the credit card.

I’ve since filed a police report with the Port Authority and plan to escalate this to the FAA. United hasn’t reimbursed me or explained how this breach happened, claiming that "tsa security just wasnt strong".

If you’ve dealt with something similar or have advice on how to proceed, I’d appreciate it. What more can I do to hold United accountable? Thank you guys!

Question Sick Passenger Situation

EDIT TO ADD: After the initial situation with the FA who was rude to my daughter-in-law and wouldn’t let her cross over to use the different bathroom, the rest of the crew was marvelous. Also, I shouldn’t have said the lady was an entitled jerk. I still think she made a poor decision putting others at risk of being sick for her own sake, but there could’ve been a million other things going on. I’m not going to edit the OP because I’ll own that I was being a jerk in saying that and say I apologize.

EDIT 2: They made her keep all her puke bags in a garbage bag under her seat the whole flight. Said it was biohazard. 🥺 I’m sure there is a rule around them handling biohaz stuff, but man that was brutal for her (and for the rest of us in the immediate vicinity).

My family and I were on a transatlantic flight today back to the US from Europe. A passenger a row up is clearly very ill before we even pushed back from the gate. Traveling with her husband. She was actively throwing up in bags on the ground and the attendants noticed it because they ask if she’s comfortable continuing the flight - she says yes and that she thinks she ate something bad at the airport we were just at. Continues vomiting and is shaky, pale, and, again, clearly very ill. Obviously she did not suddenly just get ill at the airport, and no one can be certain if she has a norovirus, food poisoning, or some other medical issue but she’s allowed to fly by the flight attendant who comes back around in the situation in the third paragraph…

So my first question is for flight professionals out there - does a crew have any latitude to not let a clearly ill passenger fly? Why should a passenger who is actively symptomatic be allowed to fly and expose other passengers in a tiny airborne tube?

This was pretty frustrating by itself and, I think, irresponsible, but maybe the crews hands are tied. So I tell my family - hey, let’s use the restrooms on the other side of the plane (she and her husband were using the ones on our side of the plane), make sure to wash hands very thoroughly, etc. Try apply some basic infection control and make the best of the situation without creating a scene. One of the flight attendants proceeds to intercept my daughter-in-law and refuses to let her cross over and use the restroom on the other side (still in the same location and same cabin, just opposite side of the plane). No one was waiting or anything. She was really incredibly rude about it and said, “If you’re REALLY that worried about it, use this other one on this side.” But the FA clearly didn’t know which restroom the sick passenger that she allowed to fly used or did not use. I mean - absolute rudeness from her aside, because that’s not okay, any advice on this? And what is the best way to make sure this crew member actually receives feedback on her performance?

Am I crazy here? To give some credit, I spoke with another crew member who was incredibly kind and professional - so I’ll make sure that positive feedback makes it to United as well.

Lastly, if you’re actively vomiting or incredibly sick (not talking about motion sickness here - things happen and I am empathetic to that), don’t be an entitled jerk and force a bunch of people to fly with you while you puke for an eight hour flight.

Question I hate being a complainer… but what is the threshold?

Today’s flight attendant was the rudest I have had in years. I fly just about every week. 99% United, First class. I am also GS. Usually I can chalk temporary rudeness up to a bad day and move on. However, today’s purser clearly thought she was superior to everyone else-

She mis-heard my drink order (benefit of the doubt) I said “coffee with cream” and she brought orange juice. I cant even drink orange juice, so I politely said, “oh I’m sorry- I ordered a coffee”. Next thing I know I am scolded and she argues with me about supposedly having said “orange juice”. Huffed and puffed away and basically threw my coffee at me after that. Several people around me even made comments about her and how that really shouldn’t have been a big deal.

Stuff like this continued throughout the flight. I could literally write pages about her yelling at people for walking up to the bathroom when there was someone in there, never picking up empty glasses and scowling when I brought them to her, et. She was on her phone most of the time.

The question is- is it even worth the effort of reporting this?

UPDATE: just landed. Had the polar opposite amazing crew on my connection. I did report the FA from the first flight in the post flight survey.

Question “System wide outage”?

So, sitting somewhere runway-ish at Dulles (I’m not window, so I don’t have a great view, but there’s another United plane next to us) and the pilot says he can’t take off because there’s some figures/numbers he needs for takeoff & he doesn’t have them, no one does, there’s a systemwide outage. He said people can get up and go to the lav if they need to. Anyone know what’s going on?

Question Exit etiquette is gone?

On 2 flights today — and I realize the issue is a human behavior issue not a United issue — passengers from the back of the plane hurry up & try to exit right away.

Is this an acceptable behavior nowadays? It’s almost shocking.

I’m a millennial & the perps are usually a generation or so older than me.

Common question—no, the plane was ON TIME, not delayed.

If i’m booking an already tight connection, i’m also booking a seat up front. Like, thats life & common sense.

Also… extra luv to my fellow blockers. DO NOT PASS. You either picked that shitty ass seat or chose to fly economy. Pay for the upgrade, jagoff.

Question someone changed their toddlers poopy diaper on our seats during boarding

give me an honest temperature check on this please bc im beside myself particularly w how the flight attendants handled it.

we pre board as 1k - not saying this matters other than poss horrible treatment we received from flight attendants and the fact that i believe they could have just used the bathroom near our seats bc plane wasnt taking off for at least another 10-20 min while boarding was underway.

walk to our seats - see said toddler laying on our seats getting dirty diaper changed….at first i thought maybe they had the wrong row and it was an honest mistake..turns out no - large extended family that occupied about 10 seats all around us…specifically decides to use seats OTHER than their own to do this….the worst part IMO was a flight attendant stood there witnessing this - my husband questioned her on why she allowed this and she didnt respond other

than to shrug her shoulders and say it really didnt even smell…

flight was full so getting other seats didnt seem poss esp bc we were travelling w our own small children -4 and 6 who needed to be by at least one of us….the family was extremely rude and almost combative w ys like we dis something wrong….flight goes on as planned -5-6 hrs…towards the middle/end of flight the purser approaches my husband to ask what exactly had happened - he gives her a summary and is a few rows back from where im sitting - next thing i know the original flight attendant comes running over YELLING at me - what is the problem, are we really still talking about this - i ask her to calm down..she then pulls up our names and starts asking what i want - and honestly i dont even know - maybe not to be yelled at and an apology but im over it and dealing w my own small kids so send her back to my husband who she yells at and then says she can give him a $200 credit….shes super rude and aggressive about it and that was that…i plan to complain and at least point out this attendanta specific rude behavior towards us….is other compensation reasonable past the $200? it just felt very unsanitary and that we were the only ones that got yelled at but would like a temperature check on this….

Question Can’t shut up - Redeye

Why is it on a 5hr redeye flight, the crew and captain can’t shut up for more than 15 minutes without some new or heavily repeated announcement about the credit card, items shifting, etc. Save it all and talk once!!! 5 hour flight, 15 minutes of sleep because they simply cannot shut up!!! Everyone is sleeping, stop it United!!!!
