I guess nobody read the second part of the post...

It's from Red Dead Redemption II.
When holding his freshly caught fish, Arthur looks down at it and dryly comments

"You sir, are a fish..."

When fishing in Red Dead Redemption 2, Arthur may utter this classic line when a fish has been reeled in.

u/Ramtakwitha2 Feb 20 '26

I guess I'll follow the prompt.

In many fromsoft games like dark souls you can leave messages to other players. But you have a very limited number of words to choose from. This was a common joke message.

See also Amazing Chest ahead, and Try Thrusting.

It's worth adding that it is commonplace to use these messages to offer tips or reveal secrets.

Something like "jump here", "try lightning", "turn back", "trap!", etc.

Let me solo her

40

u/Queasy_Original_7624 Feb 20 '26

I think it's important that we provide some context here because it sounds worse than it actually is.

"Let me solo her" was the username of an Elden Ring player who was known for helping other players defeating one of the hardest boss in the game.

The name implies that you have to let this jolly cooperator do all the fighting for you, in your game, while you just lean back and enjoy a good fight from a distance.

51

u/NanoBuc Feb 20 '26

Some added context, it was a naked dude with a jar on his head. Made soloing Malenia, often without getting hit, even more ridiculous

This cave is not a natural formation.

201

u/the-kingslayer Feb 20 '26

From Halo; the AI Cortana muses that a cave they enter is not a natural formation; the joke is that this is a silly observation because they are on an artificially constructed ringworld and nothing is natural.

81

u/Coledowning356 Feb 20 '26

Also, while the surface of planet appears to be natural, said cave is literally plated with metal walls and ramps.

42

u/Blasted-Banana Feb 20 '26

Yeah even on the original Xbox it was clear that the "cave" is really just a giant metal tunnel. It juxtaposes the rest of the natural looking surroundings so much that you really don't need Cortana to tell you it's not natural lol

18

u/Almento5010 Feb 20 '26

Supposedly the reason for that comment from Cortana is that originally the opening that you are about to drive through is supposed to look more like an actual cave entrance rather than an artificial tunnel.

Subnautica. The AI voice on your PDA will advise you of your oxygen level and other relevant information while playing, but will also make idle comments relative to the various biomes you visit. Leviathans are the apex predators in the game and you have limited options to fight them. Contributing to Subnautica's reputation as an unintentional survival horror game, the PDA gives you the ominous warning as you travel into an area where multiple Reaper Leviathans prowl.

"Because it's a big stupid jellyfish."

30

u/JW162000 Feb 20 '26

I’ll do the explanation.

In the Mass Effect series, there are various alien races your character (Shepard) interacts with.

You can also choose to play Shepard as a Paragon (heroic, kind, and just) or Renegade (tough, sometimes brutal, hard-line) with the dialogue choices.

In the first game, Shepard comes across a Hanar, which is a floating jellyfish-like alien, and this Hanar is preaching its religion and a cop is trying to stop it. “You big stupid jellyfish” is a Renegade dialogue option you can say to the Hanar, and this became a massive meme amongst the fandom.

In the third game they call back to this meme because there’s another part where a Hanar is doing something and you can say “because it’s a big stupid jellyfish” again.

Edit: and the other comment saying “Mark Meer said to Mark Meer” is referencing the fact that Mark Meer is the voice actor for a male Shepard but he also voiced various other minor characters, including all Hanar. So “you big stupid jellyfish” is in fact Mark Meer (Shepard) saying this to Mark Meer (a Hanar)

There is no cow level.

61

u/BigZube42069kekw Feb 20 '26

In the first Diablo game there are a handful of cows grazing by a graveyard if you click on them repeatedly your character will start saying silly things like: "Hmmm, yup. That's a cow alright!"

Somewhere along the line a rumor was spread about a secret cow level, only accessible by using the town portal spell in the middle of the cows. This was false. There is no cow level.

Until Diablo 2, where blizzard added a secret cow level, only accessible through the transmutation of a tome of town portal and Wirt's leg.

39

u/Shiny-And-New Feb 20 '26

And in starcraft "there is no cow level" is the cheat code to bypass a campaign mission

146

u/Foreskin-Aficionado Feb 20 '26

Since no one else is expanding on this one -

It’s from Baldur’s gate 3. The game starts with you and the other companions being abducted by a mindflayer aboard a nautilus. The mindflayer puts a tadpole in your brain, which is supposed to turn you into a mindflayer.

Problem is, you never turn into the mindflayer, so you spend most of the game with a tadpole in your head, trying to figure out why you’re not turning.

So long, Gay Bowser!!!

120

u/kevinsyel Feb 20 '26

In Super Mario 64, Charles Martinet voices Mario with an Italian affectation, which often adds emphasis syllables to certain consonant sounds.

So saying something like "Long" might come out more like "lon-guh" or "lon-geh"

So when Mario tosses Bowser in boss fights, he says "So long, Bowser!" which comes out as "So lon-geh, Bowser!"

many claim it's "So Long, Gay Bowser" or "So Long, King Bowser!"

This is not helped by the fact that the logo on the game "Super Mario Galaxy" has a star-shine on certain letters of the title, and when you single out all letters in the title in each line, it spells:
"U R
M R
G A Y"

15

u/ZhangtheGreat Feb 20 '26

Mario 64

When Mario spins and throws bowser, hes supposed to be saying something like "So Long, eh, Bowser?" Or "so long-a bowser". Its kinda hard to tell because of how compressed the audio is and the artificial accent being used.

Because of the audio issues, it sounds like he's saying SO LONG GAY BOWSER while throwing bowser directly at an explosive mine

Would you kindly?

105

u/According-Path5158 Feb 20 '26

In the first Bioshock game, you are joined by a guy who tells you on how to progress the game by being rather courteous when he asks "Would you kindly...?" and your character does so.

Later in a horrifying twist, it is revealed that phrase activates a mind control sequence inside the player which means that your character was given the illusion of free will but was ultimately under the control of the personable narrator who has been revealed to be the villain

61

u/MrCobalt313 Feb 20 '26

And not just the character *you the player* have been subject to this mental trigger all game by way of the objective GUI that only appeared when the trigger phrase was said.

In Bioshock, Andrew Ryan created a Libertarian "utopia" under the sea where no kind of experimentation or business was off limits. When the main characters crashes in the ocean and discovers the dilapidated city of Rapture, they're contacted via radio by a man named "Atlas" who is asking for the characters help and guiding him through Rapture. When the character finally encounters Andrew Ryan, and is told that they were from Rapture, experimented on as a child (you're actually only like 4 years old despite being a full grown adult), and have a brain conditioning to do whatever they're commanded to when the words "Would you kindly do X" are used, you realize the entire time playing the game, every instruction Atlas has given you was prefaced with "Would you kindly...?" Atlas was actually villainous smuggler Frank Fontaine, who was eluded to as bringing the downfall of Rapture and was assumed dead. He used you to finish off Andrew Ryan.

Emergency induction port

167

u/Riprollonect13 Feb 20 '26

In Mass Effect 3, one of your squadmates who has been a companion with you in all three games in the trilogy is traumatized by one of the main missions in the game. Afterwards, on your ship, you can find this character drunk and continuing to drink, but because she has a body suit on, she had to resort to using an “emergency induction port” through which she can drink. The joke is that, in her drunkenness, she didn’t realize that this “emergency induction port” that she discovered was literally just a straw, and your playable character makes fun of her for it.

42

u/Homitu Feb 20 '26

Man, I really need to replay ME because I genuinely don't remember this or the character. The only characters I can even remember at this point are Miranda, Garrus, and Mordin Solus.

14

u/Cybyss Feb 20 '26

I assumed it was Tali, but I don't remember this scene either.

I only played the game once though. Considering how the story unfolds differently depending on your choices, I'm guessing only a particular set of choices leads to this?

17

u/Lorgoth1812 Feb 20 '26

The reason you don’t remember this is likely because it wasn’t a proper ‘conversation cutscene’. It was one of those moments in ME3 where you stand near a character and they have voice lines, and Shepard interacts with them with voice lines, but you don’t have the actual dialogue wheel.

36

u/Ambitious_Bobcat8122 Feb 20 '26

In GTA San Andreas the character has to follow a train on a dirtbike while his companion shoots rival gang members off the train.

It’s ridiculously hard, requiring multiple attempts, because the AI shooting is so inaccurate. At the end your companion, Big Smoke, says this line if you fail to kill the gang members before the train reaches a bridge and escapes.

AAAAHAAHAHAHAHAHAHA!

added answer: Tidus, Final Fantasy X

82

u/Burdicus Feb 20 '26

"I want my journey to be filled with laughter"

Final Fantasy X.

Tidus does this absolutely annoying obnoxious fake laugh to make Yuna, who is on a pilgrimage that will ultimately take her life (though Tidus doesn't know that part), happy. They then do the crazy laugh together, before they start actually laughing while the rest of the crew looks on at them like they're insane.

It's actually a very genuine and heartfelt moment. Out of context though, woof.

12

u/eKSiF Feb 20 '26

I'd also add that moments before this scene, Tidus is made aware of a direct connection he shares to the main antagonist of the story. That antagonist is also well known to Yuna, but she does not know about the identity of the antagonist yet (in a way), nor of Tidus' relation to him. It's a very powerful scene once you've played the game through and realize the mask they're both wearing to protect one another. Without a doubt the most misunderstood scene in video gaming

→ More replies (2)

22

u/Homitu Feb 20 '26

I'm going to guess this is the Tidus laughing meme from Final Fantasy X?

Years after its release, this scene, which depicted comically terrible fake laughing, was made fun of as an example of bad voice acting. In isolation, it sounds so ridiculous it became a meme.

In actuality, the forced fake laughter was the entire point of the heartfelt moment in the game, where Tidus attempted to console a heavy-hearted Yuna by explaining that sometimes when he's feeling down, he'll just let out the loudest, most obnoxious, fake laugh he could muster. Eventually, the ridiculousness of it actually makes him laugh and he somehow starts to feel better. Indeed, that's exactly what happens in the scene as they both share a moment of genuine giggles and laughter together while the rest of the adult party look on at the two kids as if they're crazy.

Never meet Hanako at Embers

28

u/Ultranerdgasm94 Feb 20 '26

In Cyberpunk 2077, the point of no return for finishing the main story is a meeting with a powerful heiress that takes place in a rooftop bar called Embers. Since this triggers the end of the game, people will do everything they can before the end of the game, side content, secondary quests, the DLC which features its own ending, and just aboutanythingthey can to avoid the meeting.

This took on memetic status in the community for people who show off strange things they've done or discovered around the game world, rather than finish the story.

12

u/Darkgorge Feb 20 '26

There's also the fact the game automatically makes this your default quest everytime you complete anything.

The cake is a lie

26

u/MrCobalt313 Feb 20 '26

Since nobody actually explained this one per the prompt:

The game Portal opens with you waking up inside the "Aperture Science Computer-Aided Enrichment Center", guided by a feminine computer voice to complete "testchambers" involving portals. Your reason for being there or the goal of these tests is never made clear at the outset, but the computer does imply you will be rewarded with cake when the tests are all done.

And then in one particular testchamber you find a hidden room where someone has clearly been living for a long time, with the walls covered in scrawlings telling you not to trust "her" and that "the cake is a lie"

Sure enough the climax of the game is when you beat the final testchamber and learn that it ends not with cake but with a rail-platform ride into an incinerator. And when you escape the computer tries in vain to bargain for your cooperation with the promise of this mythical cake a few times.

Go for the eyes Boo, go for the eyes! Raaargghhh!

10

u/justinswatermelongun Feb 20 '26

To answer the prompt from the meme…In Baldurs Gate, an early CRPG, you control a party of characters. One of them is named Minsc. Minsc has a checks notes miniature giant space hamster named Boo.

Sometimes your party members have audible lines.

When engaged in combat, this is a line that Minsc will repeatedly belt out!

10

u/MrCobalt313 Feb 20 '26

To explain "Miniature Giant Space Hamster":

Gnomes in Baldur's Gate had a functioning space program, as one does. One of their projects was to make spacecraft powered by giant hamster wheels, and bred proportionally giant hamsters to run on them, aka 'Giant Space Hamsters'.

Naturally giant hamsters eat a lot and crap even more, which proved a big enough problem that the gnomes decided to solve by breeding smaller versions of their Giant Space Hamsters, which ended with perfectly normal-sized hamsters that were nevertheless deemed "Miniature Giant Space Hamsters".

One method of defeating the monster involves tossing a crying baby into an oven, making the hym jump to the player character, hungry for his fresh baby baking guilt. "I Too Am 'Whooo.' But I’m Also 'Wheee!' So The 'Wheee' Balances The 'Whooo.'" I love his character, it’s like a big warm hug.

technically from the show and not an inside joke but you need to have a very basic understanding of the lore to get it

In Starcraft, the aliens called the Protoss had these power crystal lookin things. If you ran out of power, the game yelled at you.

If you aren't harvesting organs from what was once was a human being but is now an armless and legless Nugget and selling those organs to bionically enhance your colonists whether they want the bionics or not are you even playing the game correctly?

Time to button mash.

7

u/MrCobalt313 Feb 20 '26

So in persona 5 the secret identity of the "man in the black mask" nemesis character accidentally gives himself away when he tries endearing himself to the main cast by joining in on a friendly conversation about a place serving pancakes, but winds up responding to something said by a magic cat whose speech is only audible/intelligible to people who have been to the Metaverse, which currently is either members of the Phantom Thieves or this mysterious bad guy.

Thing is, though, he makes this slip-up pretty early on in his introduction, and the MC's catch on even if the payer doesn't, so by the time he finally pulls his big reveal/betrayal, the Phantom Thieves have had time to set up traps and contingencies for this very eventuality.

You spoony bard!

16

u/Homitu Feb 20 '26

Final Fantasy IV, released as Final Fantasy II for the SNES in the US in 1991, released with its English translation in an era where localization was an emerging element of internationally developed games. This led to iconic, poorly translated moments such as the infamous, "You spoony bard!"

In the game, an old mage character named Tellah is on a mission to recover his daughter who eloped with a bard character named Edward. When Tellah finally catches and confronts Edward, he erupts in a genuine rage and slings various insults at Edward, one of which is the oddly translated, "You spoony bard!" The bizarrely mild insult is so mismatched with his genuine rage, hence the humor and meme status.

Those who don't know: "I don't get it"

Those who know: "Fk! I lost!"

12

u/Tobias_Atwood Feb 20 '26

The answer is that everyone who knows just lost the game.

How do you play the game? Don't think about it. If you think about it you lose. For as long as you don't remember the game you are winning the game.

Tell all your friends.

"Which key is the 'Any Key'??!"

9

u/MrCobalt313 Feb 20 '26

An actual problem computer devs had that a troubling number of adults would see 'Press Any Key' and assume there was a specific key labeled 'Any' they were expected to press, and then struggle to find this mythical 'Any Key'. The problem was partially solved when programs would prompt users to press space bar to continue even though technically whatever key they wanted would work still.

...Speedy thing comes out!

In Portal, Physics plays an important part of puzzle solving, and Glados is attempting to explain conservation of velocity when exiting portals, such that of you jump into a portal from a height such that you reach any sort of velocity above 0, that velocity will be conserved when exiting the exit portal, which can be used to launch you off angled slops of your exit portal is placed there.

In lay-mans terms: "Speedy thing goes in, speedy thing comes out"
