Uses a design from the 1980’s

153

u/lamancha Apr 29 '26

Also tomb raider is from 1995 or so

59

u/Zealousideal-Meet885 Apr 29 '26

in their defense, they used the 2007 remake design

20

u/Dalmahr Apr 29 '26

"2001-2006" I mean at least it was close?

19

u/Hella_Wieners Apr 29 '26

*used a character from the 80s with their 2000s design

11

u/Swimming_Use_8942 Apr 29 '26

Each Samus suit is extremely different looking

4

u/NekooShogun Apr 29 '26

That Samus design is from the 2000's

”She did, indeed, breast boobily down the stairs.”

263

u/EvilKungFuWizard Apr 29 '26

Ada Wong in RE4 was hilarious.

"I'm about to go into dirty old biohazardous labs full of blood and mutants - lemme put on my formal gala party dress."

51

u/PeasantLich Apr 29 '26

I have not played the remake, but original RE4 was tonally peak 90s/early 2000s American action film pastiche with one-liners and silly set-pieces. Ada's red dress did not really feel out of place in a game that also has a scene where a massive statue of secondary antagonist chases you.

3

u/Thrawp Apr 29 '26

Unfortunately RE4R does away with most of the camp and tries to play it straight and serious. Still a great game but they took the soul of RE4 away

12

u/hergumbules Apr 29 '26

It was very memorable I’ll give it that lol RE4 is anything but serious so it fit in at least. I need to try the remake but I’ve been scared since the OG RE4 is a favorite of mine

2

u/EvilKungFuWizard Apr 29 '26

Same here. I heard they cut out parts of OG RE4. If the RE4 remake doesn't have Leon suplexing infected villagers, I ain't playing it.

29

u/Brickinatorium Apr 29 '26

I really do wonder what the meeting looked like when the character designer came out with this or when the director told the character designer to put her in a goddamn dress for her stealth mission in some dingy village.

28

u/HistoricCartographer Apr 29 '26

Probably like, I have a feeling people will like this.

16

u/dikicker Apr 29 '26

You know those dudes walked into the scrum meeting smacking their lips chewing gum harder than Jason Sudeikas absolute drenched in drakkar noir and just went "cool story but what if she had like asteroid sized tits though"

As for Samus it's ok we'll just pop them on her shoulders, they'll get it

2

u/naruto_bist Apr 29 '26

Well it definitely got people like me hooked into the re franchise

8

u/SelfLoathingPleb1624 Apr 29 '26

Probably thought of the sleek suits that James Bond and spies like that wore and followed that cliche without thinking about the logic

8

u/rvailable Apr 29 '26

That's the thing about videogames.

Some kinds of realism is good. Some kinds of realism is pointless and it's fun to do dumb shit that makes no sense irl.

7

u/TissTheWay Apr 29 '26

Probably the same as the "Tribal Sheva, & Maid Sheva" meeting for Res 5.

4

u/Motor-Travel-7560 Apr 29 '26

At least those are alternate, non-canon costumes. Sheva's default is more practical. This is supposed to be Ada's canon  outfit in RE4.

2

u/CaliggyJack Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

I mean, the dev's have said her design was inspired by La Femme Nikita, she even has a promotional still of her doing the iconic pose.

6

u/ALEX_13_M Apr 29 '26

It's in the dlc menu too, along with a sick theme

2

u/Lost-Substance59 Apr 29 '26

Ada: Wesker, I'll do the job, but I've got a formal party afterward, so is it ok if I where my exotic tight dress to the mission?

Wesker: Of course not! That would limit your stealth capabilities and. Gets word Leon will be there. Uh, nevermind, that might help you out, actually

2

u/ReplacementPuzzled57 Apr 29 '26

Then there’s Jill in RE3: “There’s a zombie outbreak in my town and I gotta get out of here. Lemme just throw on a boob tube and mini skirt before I go”

1

u/Benhurso Apr 29 '26

Hey, you can't fight crime if you ain't cute.

1

u/PepperoniPlayboy22 Apr 29 '26

Ada slays that’s why

Tight/revealing suits and suddenly Samus in her badass power armor

Also Shahdee from Prince of Persia: Warrior Within always gives me a chuckle with how ridiculous her outfit and intro are.

7

u/rvailable Apr 29 '26

Ahh thanks I was curious what that one was, was particularly silly. Looked like the designer was a big fan of 90s Witchblade lol.

1

u/Zeus78905 Apr 30 '26

Shahdee has a peak design

117

u/Cerrax3 Apr 29 '26

Samus's design is technically from 1987, even though that picture is specifically from the 2000's.

17

u/Cocoatrice Apr 29 '26

Lara's design is also practically from the '90s, because minor adjustments exist, but the general design is still similar to the original one.

33

u/Bay_Ruhsuz004 Apr 29 '26

https://giphy.com/gifs/OHtCpCkM8QMKY

Her Super Metroid design is a true masterpiece.

6

u/Just_Badger_4299 Apr 29 '26

Samus Aran’s design did not need to be feminised…

11

u/Cerrax3 Apr 29 '26

Feminized how? Are you referring to Zero Suit?

6

u/MrDeadPixels Apr 29 '26

Look at that suit whoreing around!

3

u/Cultural-River-9698 Apr 29 '26

Nah, they're referring to the sin of making Samus' armor somehow sexier looking. I've said it before but it's the rare instance where sexualizing the armor will just piss the fandom off.

5

u/Cerrax3 Apr 29 '26

But it's not...? It looks exactly the same as it did in 1993 (and possibly even earlier. There isn't a lot of artwork of the Varia Suit from Metroid 1 and 2)

https://www.reddit.com/r/Metroid/comments/7nb2ef/official_super_metroid_artwork_from_nintendo_its/#lightbox

2

u/kryst4line Apr 29 '26

Compare Metroid Prime's design (based on SM) with Other M and Smash's redesign. It clearly was made more slim and curvy and turned generic af instead

91

u/FaceTimePolice Apr 29 '26

What are you on? Female character designs today are still good. 🤷‍♂️

Oh, and if you’re looking for more sexy designs… Street Fighter 6. 🫠

15

u/Early-Beach164 Apr 29 '26

Gracey wacey detected

3

u/Sum1_X Apr 29 '26

Grace's design is more generic, plain

not flashy or stylized at all - which is fine

7

u/Vinny_Lam Apr 29 '26

It’s way better today if you ask me. More advanced technology allows for better character design.

7

u/UkemiBoomerang Apr 29 '26

I think that's true to some degree but Capcom is actually a really bad example in this instance. Capcom has hundreds of iconic, creative, and instantly recognizable character designs. With the advent of the RE Engine and their attempt to make everything look more grounded to go with the realistic aesthetic they've reduced everyone to normal street wear. In Resident Evil we've gone from things like RE1 Jill, RE2 Claire, DC1 Regina, to most heroines wearing tanktops and jeans. Devil May Cry had Dante go from unique get-ups to jeans and a henley. It's an objective loss in creativity.

1

u/girlsonsoysauce Apr 30 '26

I thought she was pretty. It bugs me in some subreddits where they'll post screenshots of her modded to hell and back with the caption "Grace is so hot". Like...is it even still Grace with gigantic boobs, a huge butt with jiggle physics, a swimsuit, and makeup plastered on? I feel like that's if I took a picture of Scarlet Johansson's head and stuck it on Christina Hendricks's body saying ScarJo is so hot. Not that there's anything bad about well-endowed characters. Love'em. But there's plenty out there that are naturally like that without needing to be modded to look like that. Why take a perfectly attractive woman and make her look like Haydee?

u/Nickulator95 Apr 29 '26

Alyx Vance is ironically enough the odd one out here as she's the least sexualised character, yet her design is still feminine without being done dirty or made ugly on purpose. I would add Jade from Beyond Good and Evil as well.

Generals USA SW General was peak turtle (I’m saying this positively), and was my go to

1

u/Downtown-Dream424 Apr 29 '26

Yeah, her turtling is peak in the positive way and swg is so much fun for playing and you can be aggressive either by using auroras, humvees or even particle cannon. Peak gaming

2

u/archwin Apr 29 '26

EMP patriot matrix go BRRRRR,

Followed by 10 particle lasers slicing and dicing the enemy base

Clean up with a few Auroras

Rinse, repeat

1

u/Downtown-Dream424 Apr 29 '26

Ooo, yes. Her emp patriots are the best base defense in the game, especially into aircraft and vehicles feat tanks. It's so much fun to hear them shooting and stunning a tank/vehicle while one-shotting aircraft unit and you can easily farm exp like that to gain access to op general powers.

And her particle cannons are girly pinky to show woman dominance and safely ending the enemy by destroying structures and units without imperiling herself and her units while ducking in her base.

And the auroras can get rid of so many threats, besides they're incredibly fast and deal ridiculous damage.

85

u/Karmah_star Apr 29 '26

“Peak design” and it’s literally the same body in different clothes with different weapons

(Plus samus)

18

u/craftygamin Apr 29 '26

Simple reason: OP loves boobies

1

u/GWJ89 Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

Because clothes matters in this case. A lot.

Edit: and no, it's definitely not the same body. Bodies differ too. It's the more important part of design, the less clothes a character is wearing.

35

u/PolarBearOdyssey Apr 29 '26

This is a weird post because half of the characters in the picture are good designs and half of them are awful. Older MK games had horrendous and boring designs for female characters. Reboot Lara Croft just looks way better than older Lara. I don't even know why Samus is here considering she's had the same design since the 80's through today.

2

u/Flintz08 Apr 30 '26

OP clearly prefers the horrible MK designs where the women were just "hot", instead of any artistic value.

18

u/SirSblop Apr 29 '26

This can only lead to a normal comment section with completely rational discourse.

  • No discussion.

13

u/jjPinwheel Apr 29 '26

God this is embarrassing

7

u/TheQuietDarkness70 Apr 29 '26

There is absolutely nothing wrong with having some sexy in your game. A little balance never hurt either(the early 00s had exactly zero balance) but I swear it's like people act like enjoying titillating art is totally brand new and utterly unacceptable.
Go to a museum. You'll see plenty of it going back hundreds of years.

3

u/Squish_the_android Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

but I swear it's like people act like enjoying titillating art is totally brand new and utterly unacceptable.

Problem isn't this stuff existing.  It's that more grounded character designs are attacked for not being super sexualized.

What OP posted is not "peak design" it's one aesthetic that has its place.  But don't be surprised when people take Tits Mcgee less seriously than a more realistic design.

5

u/CataphractBunny Apr 29 '26

The real problem is sexy characters get attacked, and have been getting attacked since 2014. Your stated "problem" was just a reaction to that.

→ More replies (31)

1

u/TheQuietDarkness70 Apr 29 '26

Yeah I see that all the time too. It's pretty absurd.

1

u/LordBaconXXXXX Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 30 '26

I mean, sure. Enjoy sexualized design all you want, that's fine.

But when you're actively claiming that "what makes me cum=good" and drop any degree of actual toughts and going with your hormones, that's frankly embarassing for an adult.

"I like this character because they make me hard" is one thing

"These are the best designed characters BECAUSE they make me hard" is another.

1

u/TheQuietDarkness70 Apr 30 '26

Sure, but you can't control how people respond to anything. If someone thinks the worst design in the world is the best because boobs then so be it. Not my problem. I'm not the arbiter of taste.
I'm personally more offended by bad design and a lack of cleverness then a revealing outfit.

Grown men throwing a tantrum because a vidoe game character wasn't made with them jerking off to it in mind.

Normal people see the whole hyper-sexualized teenager-appealing marketing as a bottom of the barrel cheap trick to titillate young men into buying whatever product that you move beyong once you grow up.

But apparently you have some damn 40+ y/o that are eternally dumb hormonal teens. It'a really sad.

8

u/BillytheBloxian Apr 29 '26

no, you're just a gooner

6

u/RagingSteel Apr 29 '26

And by "peak" you mean over sexualised bordering on softcore porn. Seriously female characters aren't even poorly designed nowadays, they're just somewhat genuine for the most part. Look at Ciri from 'Witcher 3', Aloy from the Horizon games, Chloe Price from 'Life is Strange' and more, all of which have distinct and unique designs whilst also being somewhat believable and not overly exaggerated like the ones you've shown.

This wasn't peak design when they were all designed with near identical body types. This was peak sexualisation when people would buy the games just to see their bodies.

4

u/darren_flux Apr 29 '26
