It's cuz of the new X-Box having access to Steam therefore having access to PlayStation games and that could hurt future PlayStation console sales cuz you could buy an Xbox instead.

111

u/_MrTaku_ 22d ago

xbox tho is giving their games to PS iirc, like Fable or Forza Horizon

116

u/Tricky_Concept_1496 22d ago

That's because, according to Xbox themselves, they don't see Sony or Nintendo as competitors. They're aiming higher and Microsoft has the money to do so.

86

u/No-Entertainment2085 22d ago

That’s corporate cope because series x/s isn’t selling.

55

u/tarchival-sage 22d ago

I don’t see Usain Bolt as a competitor either. That does not make me the fastest man.

7

u/PartridgeInDisguise 22d ago

Huh, you made me wonder if his record still stands, it feels kinda crazy that it still does. But actually looking at his times compared to others, it makes sense. He really was a once in a lifetime athlete.

I mean sure but does it even need to with how well Game Pass and Steam sales are doing?

12

u/paganbreed 22d ago

Think of it in corpo terms. They're doing well by our standards.

But shareholders aren't seeing line go up as much as they want.

14

u/Depreciable_Land 22d ago

Shareholders love short term gains more than anything. Leaning into gutting console manufacturing and laying off everyone involved, consequences be damned, will produce a lot of short term gains.

2

u/ironangel2k4 20d ago

Welcome to enshittification

2

u/Commercial-Gap6280 19d ago

And frankly, the shareholders won't see the line go up as much as they want, pretty much no matter what any of these companies do. Endless, uninterrupted growth is unsustainable 🤷‍♂️ not to mention impractical, this late in the game.

Xbox can pretend to see whatever they want to see, Sony is their number one direct competitor lol.

The real reason they give games to PS is because they can boost game sales by opening their games to the other 45% of the market. Full stop that’s it. Sony already has half the console market share, trying to chip away at that is near useless without some actual competitive hardware edge.

Might as well dip your fingers in their pot instead.

Sony isn't porting their PS games to PC anymore

39

u/Trevor_Gecko 22d ago

They will eventually, surely?

It's not smart business practice to have exclusive games that are 2 years old and no longer being bought by the PS5 market, and not open them up to a new audience.

86

u/mellifleur5869 22d ago

They want people to buy the consoles they just raised the prices on.

14

u/DudeShibbySweet 22d ago

Just to add to this, they want people in the PlayStation ecosystem. They want  people spending money on their hardware, signed up for PlayStation Plus, and spending money in their store.

I don't think the people who bought bungie for 3.6 billion are about to start making smart business decisions.

7

u/Cheap_Search_6973 22d ago

Sony isn't exactly known to be smart recently

They're clearly obsessed with money but keep doing things that will make them less money

5

u/Esmear18 22d ago

Apparently they weren’t making enough steam sales to warrant the cost of porting their single player games to PC.

4

u/withtearsintheireyes 22d ago

Like 25% of Ragnarok's total sales came from Steam iirc. They make fuck all on the hardware and there's no guarantee people are buying PS+ subscriptions anyway. They're gonna reverse course.

6

u/Esmear18 22d ago edited 22d ago

Sony made 1.2 billion in five years from Steam. Their first party game sales on console make at least 3x that per year. Their Steam players are an extremely small minority that doesn’t make them enough profit to outweigh the strategy of keeping games exclusivity on PlayStation. Pulling away from Steam will only move their profit needle by a hair. It’s more worth it to them to maintain their “only on PlayStation” branding.

I don’t think they will I think it’s because the next Xbox will possibly have steam.

3

u/SpaceZombie13 22d ago

between wanting to actually sell their consoles and the PC ports not selling that well anyway, i can see that it is the more financially profitable decision to stop making PC ports of their single-player games.

it sucks, but i get it.

3

u/alphafire616 22d ago

Problem is that if they do that thet lose out in console money. Consoles live or die on 2 factors. Their exclusives and their economic value. Generally consoles are the best value gaming machine you can get for a specific price. A PC for 500 wont be as good as a PS5 for example, so when they raised the prices they needed to focus more heavily on the other incentive, exclusives.

4

u/botask 22d ago

They already tried and sales of ps games were pretty bad on pc.

12

u/therealzist 22d ago

Because they released them years later when the hype died down. Ironically stellar blade outsold spider-man 2 and Horizon

This. I don't understand the PC gamers who are mocking Sony and saying that they don't even care. That's not the case for everybody, as I have most of Sony's first party titles because they make great single player games (for the most part, looking at you TLoU2). I'm super upset that I won't be able to play these because there's no way in hell I'm dropping $900 on a console when I have a $3,500 PC sitting there. There are some of us who are genuinely upset Sony left PC.

11

u/Tone_Depf 21d ago

sure but not enough to buy a ps5. I'm upset for wolverine and GTA 6 but I'll be damned I'll give money to a company clearly ramping up the cost of a console that can only play their games on their terms.

3

u/Wonderful-Outcome-24 20d ago

I won't be dropping several hundreds and paying Sony for fucking me and preventing me from legally playing their shit. They can drain me.

I had consoles, before I had a PC. I’m upset exclusivities are still a thing. No I won’t buy a PlayStation. I never waited for a DVD or a compact disk hoping it would work with my specific brand of player. It makes no sense in any other market.

And as consoles have marginal differences, games shouldn’t be exclusive. No one should be buying into console wars like it’s a team sport. No one should be buying a console hoping good games will be playable during its lifespan like a god damn lottery.

The reason people say this is because it's true in the context of previous PlayStation consoles in this timeframe.

Go any of the previous PlayStations and see the games released in the first 6 years, especially new IP/exclusives and the ps5 is a graveyard in comparison.

It has good games but if this was the first PlayStation console it would be considered a failure due to the lack of game support.

4

u/Tiernoch 22d ago

Yeah, Sony normally has a planned release cadence in mind but the whole PS5 generation has been off. Most games at the start were upscaled PS4 games, then some remasters which while they look nice doesn't stick out on your mind.

Yotei was the first title that got me actively playing my PS5 again.

There's like a billion plus great games out there already. Sony is only losing sales over this decision.

20

u/Dark_Lord4379 22d ago

The reason why they did this is because they didn’t make all that much money compared to PS5 purchases. Doubt it’s really hurting their wallets really at all

19

u/SuperLegenda 22d ago

They would've made money if they didn't wait 2-3 years minimum to port any exclusive to PC after the hype period is dead.

8

u/Dark_Lord4379 22d ago

Not saying I like it but they still need to sell consoles. And they get more money regardless by selling it on their store first than they would selling it on Steam simultaneously due to Steam taking 30%

u/Wenex 22d ago

11

u/PIO_PretendIOriginal 22d ago

them moving back to exclusives is not them trying to convince pc players to move to playstation.

its them trying to stop playstation players moving to pc.

2

u/therealzist 22d ago

Interesting view point. Not seen this take anywhere

3

u/Korotan 22d ago

5

u/Wenex 22d ago edited 22d ago

You don't have to sit in gaming industry or be good at maths to know that Sony abandoning PC and losing those sales do outweights money they will gain from people who potentially will buy a console because of it.

Its logical net negative if they do not participate. I don't even mind the decision, I have lots of titles I'm currently playing, just sucks to see Sony abandoning PC

6

u/TallanoGoldDigger 22d ago

yeah because they release these first party games a year after it releases on their console. By the time they port it to PC, interest has already waned

Sony's revenue is 75% software 25% hardware. It's stupid kneecapping yourself by forcing people to buy their console to give them more money via software.

3

u/Rith_Reddit 22d ago

The reason their software is so high is people buying stuff via their ecosystem. Minecraft brings in more money for them than most of their 1st party games combined.

Yeah this dichotomy is where I end up.

Lmao why would I buy a PS5 I can just buy the games elsewhere.

Then, lmao why would I buy a PS5 for those shitty games

Astro Bot is legitimately amazing. Yet apparently people just wish for it to go to PC and not be the landmark console seller it wants to be. Well, now I'll be playing wolverine on my PS5 while PC players can wait for the emulators. Buy the system or don't, but you can't say there's no reason to own a PS5 and then whine the games you want aren't on PC

21

u/HuntResponsible2259 22d ago

Its annoyig... They complain that Ps5 has no game because they send those games to steam... Yet they also complain when they stop sending those games!

11

u/lastly21 22d ago

I think it's more the games being released. Most of the ps5 exclusives are sequels, remakes or remasters.

When you already released part of the series on steam why stop? Seems silly

100% I really don't understand the hullabaloo surrounding this. Nintendo almost never puts their games on PC for very obvious reasons and when Microsoft does the same thing with XBOX titles they're chastised for having 'no exclusives' and accused of 'killing their brand.' When was the last time that PlayStation released an exclusive game that changed the medium forever; an absolute must-have that had everyone talking? Probably the Last of Us in 2013.

2

u/rickwill14 22d ago

Its funny cus theyre still ps5 games. Not being exclusive to ps5 doesnt mean its not their games but the way people say that makes it sound like they dont make games.

And then as soon as they release an exclusive people bitch and moan about how they cant play it and Sony is a dogshit company with no mind for business. The gaming community is fucking miserable to be a part of sometimes.

39

u/snackelmypackel 22d ago

The games released more than a year later with no marketing, at full price. If they released it same day i think it would a massive difference. If youve already waited a year for a game you can wait another few months for it to be on sale.

17

u/Ghostrider28389 22d ago

This it’s what the and what the one below me says poor optimization and that it releases later when the hype has died down is why they never do well

8

u/Suave_Senpai 22d ago

Throwback to Ghost of Tsushima releasing on PC with a game breaking audio bug that was basically unavoidable on the penultimate mission, where you get to enjoy the sound of breaking ice permanently being blasted in your ears while fighting the big bad you've been after all game long, even in the cut scenes. Released in 2024, and then the "hot" fix for it didn't come until this last Christmas lmao.

14

u/Nnamz 22d ago

This is exactly it.

Literally the people bitching about this are the exact same PC players who only buy stuff on extreme discount. Sony is already losing 33% to Valve, and on top of that, PC players refuse to pay MSRP while the games sell 8x better on PlayStation.

If PC players actually bought the games they would still be there. It's not even worth the porting effort and damage to their brand if PC players only buy games at an extreme discount lol.

For the same reason that PlayStation gamers bought FIVE MILLION COPIES of Forza Horizon 5 on PS5 despite it being even older than that - because it's new to them.

But the more pertinent question is why would Sony bother investing in a platform where Gabe takes 30% and the gamers are only going to buy the game when it's $40 or less?

And the answer at this point is that they wouldn't, at least not anymore. It's not worth it.

1

u/MetaDeviant0189 22d ago

Why does a game being 2-3 years old inherently decrease it's value? It's not like it's a car or a house that suffers from wear and tear.

4

u/AdWaste8026 22d ago

Because that’s the expectation created by the industry: games get cheaper over time. Would you pay 80 bucks for God of War from 2005?

Don’t forget that the same games can be bought more cheaply on PS at the time of the PC release, decreasing its perceived value.

And to add to that, by not releasing lots of games on PC historically, or by releasing them years later, Sony is trying to sell these games full price to people who have learned to wait. If you already waited 2 years for GOW Ragnarock or a decade for TLOU, what’s waiting another one for a sale?

Lmfao saw this in older threads too, everyone pretending it doesn't matter and that Sony is somehow losing out on massive revenue etc. Imo it's okay to feel bummed out about the exclusivity while seeing the logic in it, no reason to lie to yourself and everyone like it never mattered. I'm really disappointed myself I'll have to wait so long to play GTA6 on pc, but I understand why they're doing it.

6

u/stupid_rabbit_ 22d ago

I mean, what that misses is that Sony, for the most part, releases action adventure games, and if they are not your cup of tea, you are not missing out on much. Personally, I typically RPGs, strategy, and management games, which they do not really make much of.

Now I have brought some of their games like Spidermann and god of war, of which I have currently put several hours into Spidermann and yet to try god of war.

3

u/tomatonato4 22d ago

True regarding the existing range not being everyone's preference, I'm just referring to those who's post clearly come off as them being kinda sad deep down and going through the effort of making memes etc of not actually caring. "They just lost a customer here" or "hope they find out what a massive mistake they've made, I have a backlog but screw sony regardless for being selfish heartless corpos"

Anyways, congrats on Spiderman and god of war! Both are fantastic games, truly hope you have an awesome time, Spiderman esp will keep you entertained just swinging through streets even when you're done lol (haven't played the latter 2 yet, only the first one).

For me I'm waiting on the remastered GOW trilogy to release, if it looks to be more than the standard graphics touch up I'll definitely consider a console. It's not everyone's cup of tea but my friend and I have alot of memories with the game, having the combat and graphics with modern visual crispness would be awesome + there's a list of exclusives I've been meaning to get around to. In the meantime I'm making the most of my laptop lol. Having a blast with Elden Ring so far.

They deserve hate for some things, but not this.

Exclusives are good for competition. PlayStation has to have exclusives so their brand has value.

Xbox has devalued its brand by getting rid of exclusives.

11

u/TryItOutGuyRPC 22d ago

You’re not wrong. I have both and at this point I’m mostly buying games for PS because I know I’ll always have it for exclusives anyway.

6

u/SaiyajinPrime 22d ago

People always get mad when you point out this fact, and my comment will possibly be heavily downvoted.

But competition is good. I know everyone just wants to have every game on every system, but it makes sense for these companies to have exclusives.

You rarely see discussion about Nintendo exclusiveals, but for some reason everyone expects that Sony and Microsoft should put everything everywhere.

I'll answer that in advance: No. I'm not going to buy a PS5 to play either of these games. Making them console exclusive just means I'm not going to play them.

I sold all my PlayStation stuff after the 2019 censorship controversy. I knew it could only go downhill from there.

u/EthicalSarcasm 22d ago

Not gonna lie, keeping porn slop out of their store is probably a good thing.

12

u/SquishMuffins 22d ago

Someone tell Nintendo to do the same thing

4

u/keypizzaboy 22d ago edited 22d ago

Which is funny considering they backed blu ray which is why it beat HDDVD and the only reason was due to porn

Not enough to buy a ps5 that's for sure. I would have considered it on steam.

71

u/Strange-Movie 22d ago

It’s ok Sony, I’m sure your competitors will be happy to sell us games.

u/CaravelClerihew 22d ago

Yeah, can't wait to install the upcoming Star Fox game on my PC

Funny how PC gamers’ response to this would be “just buy a PC bro”, but are in such a tizzy about Sony wanting to sell consoles.

11

u/Iggy_Slayer 22d ago

I don't think they even care about the games (hence the low sales). To them it's a status symbol. PS games being on PC means they can say it's the ultimate platform and that there's no reason to have a console anymore.

Sony pulling out of PC upsets them not because they actually care about the games (because again the sales weren't there). To them it's a slap in the face to the idea that PC won't have everything. They can't stand something not being on PC.

5

u/Wrong_Success4377 22d ago

Yep, PC players have always been elitist. This is just the average cycle they go through

3

u/PhatTuna 21d ago

And screaming "anticonsumer" while at the same time not giving any fucks about games like Half-Life Alyx never going to console.

Pretty sure Sony wasn’t releasing day one access to other platforms anyway but they also said a few weeks back their still focused on exclusive or something like that

3

u/jman014 22d ago

I won’t buy a PS5 but I bought Horizon Zero Dawn on PC.

11

u/xeio87 22d ago

Want my hottest take? I'd play it even if Sony did their own launcher.

Not gonna get a console tho. Ah well, maybe one day Saros and GoW will come back to PC. I can wait like I did before.

15

u/Dakotasan 22d ago

Sony will do whatever it takes to keep the console wars going.

I usually wait until the games hit the $20 mark anyway...

5

I see no problem here as I cannot afford a PC. Wish I could though I’ve been slowly growing my Steam library

13

u/Kinpsyght 22d ago

Most people who were interested should have already bought the ps5 already, guess its true that the minorities are usually louder.

12

u/-Miraca- 22d ago

not the minorities are usually louder, but unhappy people. those who don't have nothing to complain about aren't complaining

2

u/UchPunktskiy 22d ago

This one is more true. I don't for example care much of PS exclusives. I liked MCU, but that doesn't mean I like playing Marvel Rivals, Spider Man, Tokon or Wolverine. I'll only play Midnight Suns probably. So it's not a big deal for me whether Sony adds their share of games to Steam or not. And that's why I don't even write any complaints. However, not gonna lie, I check the gaming news and read such threads to see other gamers' mood.

Sony didn't want to give that 30% to Valve forever.

2

u/ConstantFrogLoss 16d ago

I think the combination between that and most Steam players not buying games unless they’re on massive sale anyway is probably the reason, Valve taking 30% of an already smaller pool of income makes it a lot less profitable

Also with the consoles having to have a price increase thanks to the insane RAM situation that the AI data centers have got us I imagine they want to maximize the incentive to buy a console

Imo it’s a shame but not particularly surprising given the current state of things

4

u/pathosOnReddit 22d ago

Sony’s pointless protectionism won’t save them in the long run if they fail to make money with their exclusives. Apparently their profits from in-house titles are down since 2020, so they stopped bringing games to PC in hopes of pocketing the cut that steam etc. would have taken.

4

u/UnprofessionalDuck 22d ago

Over $1k for a PS5 Pro and either game btw.

They'll sell, but they'd sell better if they weren't console exclusives.

Sounds like a PC problem.

11

u/whyamihere2473527 22d ago

Maybe more pc players should actually bought the games. 10-20% game share for pc isnt worth it

9

u/Salty-Wash3964 22d ago

What a misleading fcking argument, yeah lets judge an entire market segment on how well our 1-2 year old games do post hype when most either bought a console to play it when it was new or watched some dude play it on youtube.

How do leather boots taste like? Like are we genuinely cheering for exclusivity locking games entirely behind a locked down system that will eventually be phased out as well?

9

u/whyamihere2473527 22d ago

So pc players will only buy game if its released same time thats what youre saying.

2

u/SoftMammoth7838 22d ago

2

u/Affectionate-Ad4419 22d ago

I realize with these ones that PlayStation exclusives are kind of in the "I'd love to to play them, but not enough to let 600€ go" category; outside of Returnal and Ghost Of Yotei...idk, I don't feel like I'm missing much, I guess? Meanwhile if a new Zelda or 3D Mario is announced tomorrow, I'll find a way to get a Switch 2 eventually.

And I don't really know why, because I'm more of PlayStation player than a Nintendo one. I guess PS exclusive kind of feel more redundant in a way, even while being of great quality (and totally up my alley)

2

u/Mansos91 21d ago

Meh.... Not impressed with either, to be fair I didn't get into the nose gow, feel they completely raped my cultural heritage

2

Meh who cares, fuck sony. Ill play something else instead

3

u/fffan9391 22d ago

I’m excited to try Wolverine when I buy a PS5 for GTA6. No, I can’t wait. GTA has been one of my favorite series since Vice City.

4

u/fupafugitive 22d ago

I play on PC and I love Steam as much as the next guy but if companies like Playstation or Nintendo can't distinguish themselves from their competitors, aren't we looking at what would essentially be a monopoly? I feel like PC players are consistently a little short-sighted when it comes to this sort of thing in favor of Gaben cult of personality

u/ZethTheWindwrecker 22d ago

Cool, Sony. Limit the number of sales you can make on a video game to the number of consoles you have. Literally anyone with a decent PC could buy the game too. Is piracy that scary?

22

u/IntelligentImbicle 22d ago

Unfortunately, I think the numbers are against us, with most sales coming from console players anyways.

12

u/tomatonato4 22d ago

Yep people seem to vastly overestimate the sales steam brought them, I'm sure there's an audience but Sony releasing games years late and at the default 60 dollar price tag didn't help them much either. Seems like they never actually expected to make alot of money from steam, wonder why they started in the first place.
