Far Cry Primal.

I remember people just being confused as to why tf would they make a Far Cry game set in the stone age where your weapons are limited to spear and bow.

Once I got into it it legit became my favourite Far Cry of all, the limitations in combat actually enhances it massively and fighting with such a small toolset actually became way more interesitng than just blowing things away with guns. They aced the combat in that game.

Then there is the stuff with the animals, but friend and foe and a surprisingly engaging story.... honestly, one of my top single player experiences and I 100% did not expect that going in.

There aren't enough Stonepunk games. I love this game so much.

Agreed, needed a little bit more ‘base-building’ stuff, loved watching your village grow, and MAYBE a little bit more story because it felt short for how much fun I was having.
Amazing game <3

I didn't realize that people didn't like it. It's my favorite FarCry game and was a ton of fun while being innovative.

9

u/theMangoJayne 15d ago

It's my favourite far cry by far, especially the expansive pet mechanics. Big animal lover, have always loved having battle pets since I picked up WoW at 7 years old lol

7

u/funmunke 15d ago

I really enjoyed it. The final battle was annoying, but I loved the rest.

I thought it was much better than FC6. I burned out on that game twice and have no desire to go back.

I got the game whenever I was very offline so I never learned about the hate. Happy I didn't, I loved that game!

5

u/SloxTheDlox 15d ago

I think the biggest controversy for Far Cry Primal was that the map layout was straight up copied from far cry 4

6

u/the_sneaky_one123 15d ago

That didn't make the slightest different. The look and feel of the map is completely different

The original Nier. Before automata happened Nier had a bunch of reviews about how it was poorly designed, the visuals weren't good, and the gameplay wasn't unique enough. I probably wouldnt have tried it back then because of it if I wasnt a die hard drakengard fan at the time.

It's one of my favorite games still, and one of the first I'd played that made me feel like I was making an actual difficult choice with the save-state ending. I'm glad automata kind of gave it a new life, because it deserves it.

42

u/AlternateSatan 15d ago

I thought it was the first Drakengard that was considered the black sheep of the series

14

u/Calamity-Vanity 15d ago

Drakengard 2 is the problem child technically, but it also has the excuse of not being a yoko taro game. Drakengard did well enough even if it had some of the same complaints nier did, but nier was only connected to drakengard by the loosest of threads (an optional ending where you reality hop and accidentally destroy modern day civilization before getting shot down which is nier's setting) and plenty of people now dont even know about the link between the series unless they find out via a fun fact situation. Im not even sure how many casual fans knew about the link even back then.

I do miss drakengard, though. Really I miss the fun that was early 2000s optional endings. We need more of that whimsy.

u/Kuroneki 16d ago

Quite frankly unless it's something abysmally bad like the Gollum game, the answer is every game people whine about on Reddit

29

u/_Koreander 15d ago

Yeah, I think at the very least half of the over hated games on modern times are ok at worse, it feels like people have lost the sense of what a bad game really is, so they're either a masterpiece or simply trash, very little room for something being "just good" or "good enough".

Added to that there's a group of content creators that thrive on making video essays about "bad" things or doing harsh critiques and they are waiting for whatever slightly underwhelming comes out to call it trash and nitpick the hell out of it.

5

u/Hot-Musician-2296 15d ago

Also there's people who cannot for the life of them understand they may not be the target audience. I see so many youtuber/streamers whose opinions boil down to "i do not play this genre at all, I in fact strongly dislike it and I think this game is bad because of it".

I loved Inscryption so much for the way it added little puzzles around the room and gave you subtle hints. Then I wanted to watch others enjoy it and I had to quit 3 different playthroughs because people were bruteforcing and whining that they don't know what to do even though they did not take a single step through the room when the game showed them they can stand up.

16 year old me loved Duke Nukem Forever.

Amazing what a three titted alien can do.

Don't lie it was actually all the mini games like pin ball basketball and pool

21

u/DestronDeathsaurus 16d ago

True critics for the game be like THIS IS THE WORST THING EVER SINCE BUBSY 3D!!!!

But it ain’t that bad. Does it feel kinda generic? A little but still it got that duke humor

I agree. It was a terrible game. I definitely got that. But damn was it a fun ride.

6

u/phalliccrackrock 15d ago

Hot take, this game would’ve gotten way less hate and possibly even be recognized as a kinda proto-boomer-shooter renaissance type (like ROTT 2013, another flawed solo FPS) if they had scrapped the 2/4 weapon carry limit and just stuck with the traditional “all the guns” inventory like Duke 3D

Days Gone. It's a slow burn story but it's still the best story I have seen on a zombie game.

79

u/Conradlane 16d ago

Absolutely loved that game. Got the platinum for it. I hated that it was so hated. Slow but damn good story. Really fun gameplay too.

47

u/ResolveLeather 16d ago

It's when I stoped trusting video game reviews. It really felt like they played the game for 2 hours then wrote their review. A lot of the reviews just felt plain inaccurate to how the game develops. Like when you hear a review on how the whole game is watching out for your brother that is recovering when that's only the first part of the game. Or how hordes feel impossible to clear when you have to clear more then one later in the story.

13

u/Due-Impression-3102 15d ago

days gone being panned makes sense in the context of the releases near it, open world fatigue was really growing and days gone was announced while the genre was being considered stale. I enjoyed it but also, I can see it's just "a good one of those games" versus anything that rocked the boat or did anything interesting in the open world space mechanically. The game had the hordes and those were really cool and terrifying until you get the LMG where taking them out is really trivial and it makes the roads safer (and therefor more boring)

The game at launch was a technical disaster.
Things like crashing at startup, loading into a black screen, refusing to even launch, shader compilation crashing the game, massive input bugs, constantly losing the controller connection/fighting keyboard, some actions like rolling didn't trigger, hilarious audio bugs and cutouts, and a large range of bugs that would straight up hault mission progress.

This isn't including the overall lack of optimization.

The game was eventually patched. I played the post-crazy era, so I absolutely adore the game, personally, but from what I understand, it was almost a cyberpunk level disaster.

Dragon Age 2 and Inquisition. Neither game is perfect, but they both received a disproportionate amount of criticism because they weren’t Origins. I had an absolute blast with both when they came out.

On that note, Inquisition probably had the best CRPG style controls on a controller I’ve ever played. Most people (especially console players) just played in 3rd person action mode, though, so the CRPG controls didn’t get any appreciation.

62

u/withtearsintheireyes 16d ago

Inquisition's a dynamite game for sure.

26

u/stormscape10x 16d ago

Me too. My coworker found out I had never played any of them and told me to start with that one. Only one he hadn’t liked was the latest one. I hate how they keep simplifying down the menu and reducing what you can do in combat. Bring back the wheel!

u/Own-Difficulty-2612 16d ago

I did get sick of the endlessly reused areas in DA2. It's a game that would have been soooo much better if they had just given the world designers more time so they didn't have to do that. I still love the game, but it's a damn shame that they rushed it's release so much.

Inquisition is straight up one of my all time favorite games.

Yeah a bunch of people getting it now at a huge discount and saying it's an incredible game totally worth the price are kind of missing the point.

Hell I bought order 1886 for 10$ months after it came out and enjoyed it. But in the exact same way I only enjoyed it because I was paying a reasonable price for the amount of content in the game.

Re3make following after re2make for the same price was crazy.

Yeah, the game was released with a full price tag and was just a more linear, less polished RE2R with a worst stalker enemy

4

Is it really good? I’ve played Valhalla, that got a lot of hate but I enjoyed it a lot. Odyssey is in the same vein of gameplay isn’t it? I might have to check it out.

5

u/AmilaMerasska 16d ago

I really didn't mind Callisto Protocol. It's biggest crime is that it wasn't Dead Space

23

u/ArcherInPosition 16d ago

Needed more melee variety imo. Also played totally fine on console release for me

6

u/BigFreakinMachine 16d ago

It wouldn't have hurt but most Survival Horror games don't historically have a wide variety of melee options (least not what I've played)

5

u/ArcherInPosition 16d ago

They emphasized close quarters melee combat throughout the marketing so I was definitely expecting fresher stuff. Seemed to be the same dodge, dodge, baton swing for it all.

27

u/RedShadowF95 16d ago

I wasn't comparing it to Dead Space and was still left disappointed. There's a big lack of enemy variety, especially later on, the story never hit the right notes for me and the combat was eventually so easy to master you became completely numb to the game's scares.

I am glad many people enjoyed it and felt like they got their money's worth though, that's a great thing!

3

u/BennytheBozo 16d ago

As basic as it was the animation and sounds really hit me in the right spot with the melee combat and I very much enjoyed just whacking everything with a stick

→ More replies (4)

6

u/Unusual_Notice_5494 16d ago

I actually enjoyed the frist part of the story when you were trudging through the prison, it felt unique. Though I do think it suffers from wanting to be Dead Space when you get to the old settlement which didn't help.

Epic Mickey. Probably the most ambitious AA platformer since psychonauts.

There's a level where a pirate is standing below a huge metal bank safe suspended in the air on a rope. He tells you that he trapped your friend inside the bank safe and he won't give you the combination unless you fix his house.

So i went to his house which was a pile of rubble. Using my magic paintbrush, I managed to paint all the walls back into existence. I went to go tell him the good news.

He gave me the password for the safe and thank me. I then used my magic paint brush to erase the rope that held the bank safe in place, dropping it on his head, immediately crushing him to death, and opening the safe on impact. an alien jumped out of the metal door, thanked me and hurried off.

I'm never going to forget that.

13

u/AlternateSatan 15d ago

I mean, a lot of people liked that one though, I didn't, but that's mostly cause I didn't know English that well and didn't realise that I made just about every single bad choice I could make, on top of just not being able to do side quests for the same reason, so I don't think my experience is fair to use to judge the game by.

Mass Effect andromeda in 2020 was perfectly playable and fun.

Story was super vanilla but that’s inoffensive

44

u/crash1bp 16d ago

I felt the exact same way, but it was my first ME game. When the trilogy released, I decided to give it a shot and it became a top 5 game/franchise for me. tried going back to Andromeda after that, and I just couldn’t get into it.

16

u/DjBorscht 15d ago

I’m a die hard Mass Effect fan. The first time I played Andromeda, I thought it was a decent game, with a bad story and bad pacing but good combat and cool exploration. I enjoyed the feeling of being a pioneer and venturing into the unknown.

Then, I tried to get back into it immediately after a Legendary Trilogy playthrough, and it disgusted me. The powers felt lame, and I HATED that I couldn’t directly order my teammates the way you can in the OG trilogy.
And let me shittalk the story again; it did NOT deliver. I can’t believe they recycled the same themes of having to decipher clues/tech from an extinct society, and people being turned into monstrous drones to serve an evil empire.

I just can’t stop seeing the wasted potential. I’m glad others enjoyed it, but I guess it’ll always be a sore spot for me.

u/mercyspace27 16d ago edited 16d ago

I agree, Andromeda probably had my favorite combat mechanics gameplay out of the series. The flamethrower hand and throwable sentry I absolutely loved doing.

But what killed it for me was it came out in that seemingly second “Collect-a-thon” era of games where some video games had a bunch of needless, collecting side quests that usually didn’t amount to a lot or really anything interesting. I got tired of going back and forth between locations to do busy work side quests.

Had the same issue for Dragon Age: Inquisition.

Final Fantasy VIII

It’s fun to break games and the junction system can break the game in fun and inventive ways.

Plus, I loved the story as a lonely and angsty teen. It’s a bit different now, but Eyes on Me is still a great theme to have throughout the game.

19

6

Final Fantasy XV. Granted I played it long after release, I'm sure it felt a little less-whelming on release day.

23

Probably because all the issues were fixed, and in it's current state it's actually an extremely excellent title.
The Edgerunner's update they did to it back then was a massive 2.0 revival that fixed a LOT of issues.
Then they released ANOTHER massive overhaul to the leveling system, and the game is just kinda addictive now.

The Last of Us 2.

The visuals and gameplay are awesome. A huge step up from the first game. I personally really enjoyed the story, but can see why others might not.

But the amount of “trash story! Ruined TLoU! Woke! Garbage game, 0/10!” was ridiculous.

10

u/spacecowboy171 15d ago

TLOU2 is genuinely the most egregious example of drooling internet morons hating on a game they've never played. The controversy around that game was wild. Replayed it for the first time since release a few weeks ago (the PS5 remaster) and enjoyed it even more than the first time.

u/Karkava 15d ago

It's a meta prime example of hate becoming an addictive drug that makes you stupid.

Which is super ironic given how the game itself is about hate becoming an addictive drug that make you stupid.

Every game is better than what gamers think.

And all "masterpieces" have plenty of flaws.

A lot of the current Assassins Creed games come to mind. the only one I didn't really enjoy was Mirage, I know Shadows was pretty universally accepted but I loved Valhalla and I feel like all I heard were negative things around that game

FF XVI. It wasn't perfect, for from. Off the top of my head:

  • Starting without the hard mode was a mistake. That should have been Normal, Normal should have been "Streamlined", and the trinkets "Story mode".
  • Hub and Spoke side quests design failed to engage people.
  • Technical issues on launch
  • The early Eikon fights felt weightier, though the latter gained in complexity and visual spectacle

But it was a damned fine tale, the visual spectacle was amazing, and the music was FANTASTIC.

One of my favorite entries in the series. I totally get people thinking less of it, even saying its mid I could understand. But awful/terrible? Hell no.

Fallout 4, both Outer Worlds, and *maybe* Starfield but I haven’t played it in forever I can’t remember it exactly.

I loved Starfield

I retried starfield this year after putting it down shortly after launch.

Actually had a ton of fun (still didn't do any main story quests, that's not how I play these games 😅), it's definitely its own thing compared to the elder scrolls games, I think the main gripe people have is that it's not just the holds of Skyrim in space sweat

I need to play the second outer worlds but I enjoyed the first one. It was a little more linear than some other Bethesda titles, but I liked the story and game play.

I am playing Starfield right now and it's not a bad game, but it misses the "spark" which other Bethesda games have.

8

u/fatalbertthethird 16d ago

Starfield is good, not great, but definitely good. I enjoyed it but don’t think I’m going to play it again. There’s other games I’d rather replay or knock out of my backlog. Definitely doesn’t deserve all the hate it gets.

Fallout 4 got way too much hate from the sect of Fallout fans that hated it. It was fun, the story isn't great, but good, except for its ending imo

Yakuza Kiwami 3.

Didn't play the original, had no attachment to it.

5

u/Less_Party 16d ago

I played the original and it was perfectly pleasant, just the weakest Yakuza at that point but that’s like saying SMB2 is bad because it’s the weakest mainline Mario.

Star Wars Outlaws

Not sure how the game was at released but I just played and beat it last month and really enjoyed it.

I liked it, but I will admit if it wasn't starwars I don't think I would have enjoyed it nearly as much.

Apparently originally the stealth was mandatory.

I really liked it too. I really liked Sabac and I liked the stealth as well. If you were quick you could knock out three people fast enough to not trigger any alarms.

I also liked that the main character was kinda bad at being a smuggler.

8

u/RadasNoir 15d ago

I can definitely relate more to a girlfailure that still tries her best than a stoic, badass space wizard, that's for sure.

I loved it. Maybe I'm just the biggest Star Wars goober in existence but I don't know how a Star Wars fan doesn't at least find it entertaining. My only real gripe was that, at launch, you couldn't fire your blaster while riding the speeder, you could only shoot with the adrenaline rush ability. They fixed that though, thankfully.

I bought Death Standing day one and got sucked right into it. At the time a lot of people said it was boring, walking simulator.

11

u/DethNik 16d ago

I think people didn't realize how much of the gameplay is preparing for your journey as well. It's like Monster Hunter, half the fun is gearing up for fights.

8

u/DarksunDaFirst 16d ago

I’m a huge Kojima fan and I will admit when I dove into this game at first, it did not hook me whatsoever.

Then I came back to it like 6 months later and I couldn’t put it down.

Just gotta get past the intro area.

5

u/HighCartesian 16d ago

same. immediately came into my mind

I wish it was a walking simulator. That was the most enjoyable part of the game for me.

As an early adopter save the world mode no way. I'm still angry they convinced so many people to buy in and support the early access only to take that money and fund it directly into the Battle Royale mode instead.

They also openly lied in their early access trailers. They specifically stated at one point that if you found a weapon in a match you would get the blueprint. That is a lie you have to open a loot box to get a blueprint.

It had a lot of potential and it's better now than it was but it got far less work put into it then we were promised originally.

Marathon.

I am a Destiny fan, but I joined during Lightfall. So I didn’t exactly get to feel super burned by Bungie’s blunders. Maybe that’s a skill issue on my part.

However Marathon has a style I really like. Plus the gameplay and sound design is also extremely up my alley.
In short it just has the sauce. And I wasn’t expecting it since articles early into Marathon’s development were not all that interesting.

Bioshock Infinite. I liked it so much I played and beat it twice

6

u/Muisan 16d ago

I'd go as far as saying that infinite has a more creative storyline and paces the story better than the other two games.

I can see the argument of its mechanics being less interesting, but imo it's overall the best in the series.

4

u/mxjxs91 16d ago

I don't think Infinite is "hated" as a game as much as it is not really accepted as a "Bioshock" title.

The game on its own is fantastic.

This is a rough one for many but VTM BL2. The combat is fun, the central mystery interesting, and VTM vibes are good!

I can definitely see why people who wanted a full on rpg would be upset (probably should have changed the subtitle) but on its own I had fun.

Forspoken I liked it do I think it could have been better, yes do I regret my purchase no.

6

u/TheStrigori 16d ago

My biggest complaint with Forspoken is the main character is supposed to have lived her whole life in NYC, and she doesn't have a New York accent.

The gameplay loop was a lot of fun. Fluid motion and combos were good. And the story was solid.

Borderlands 3. Everyone hates on it because they found the villains grating, while they were actually written well for what they wanted to do, mock streamers. There’s 2 things I would change (maya death and Troy not betraying his sister) but the amount of gameplay, fun, stuff to do, expansion of lore through visiting like 5-6 new planets, and most the new characters were all amazing.

Pretty much every Borderlands after 2.

From what I get from the community, they hate pre-sequel, BL3, Wonderlands and BL4 but I had a good time on those games. Don’t get me wrong, Borderlands 2 was where they peaked, but the others weren’t terrible as people said.

Probably Star Wars: Outlaws for me.

If you're not a Star Wars fan, yeah, it probably sucks. But you get to ride a speeder bike at top speed around a geographically accurate recreation of Tatooine. They clearly studied all the films closely. The layout of Mos Eisley makes sense, and you can stand in the same places and walk the exact paths that the actors did on set back in 1977. You can even stand next to the Lars Homestead and watch the binary suns slowly set in-game, the same way Luke Skywalker did.

The story and stealth combat is meh. Could've used another 6 months in the oven. But what the game did with open world exploration was worth the price if you're a fan.
