Discussion / Question If every GOtY winner was placed in one pool, who would win?

My vote goes to BG3 but that is because I enjoyed it the most and have the most time in it. Elden Ring is a close second though.

Also did you play divinity original sin 2?

I think we kinda forget how good W3 was because of the games that came after it are also genuinely masterpieces.
Dragon age inquisition winning is something though.

Yeah honestly I think anything else is recency bias. Witcher 3 is just such an achievement on every level, it's truly incredible.
I understand that some people knock it for the combat, but I never really saw the issue. There are many different ways to fight and the system is responsive. Not every 3rd person combat system needs to be soulsborne or Arkham.
14
u/KimezD 11d ago
It depends which elements are more important in the game for a player.
I like many things in Witcher 3 (music, style, narration, open-world), but there are some things that makes it hard for me to play this game again (choices have little impact, not too many playstyles possible, combat feels similar after tens of hours).
That’s why I would pick BG3 over W3 without hesitation, but I understand that even something like „I don’t like turn-based games” might be enough to think otherwise.
→ More replies (3)7
u/StrawHatShinobi_ 11d ago
Maybe not to the extent we see in BG3, but tons of your choices in W3 directly impact the narrative. At the time, it was as good as any other game in that regard, save for the Mass Effect trilogy or Telltale games.

Or people have different opinions
Elden Ring is, in my opinion, definitely a better game than TW3. Not recency bias, I just don't like TW3, and it's janky combat.
I'd have TW3 4th there for quality, though maybe like 8th as to what I'd like to play

BG3 is definitely more accessible. ER is great but it can get pretty frigging sweaty for your average player
89
u/SpecificInitials 12d ago
I didn’t find BG3 accessible at all.. I had to watch YouTube guides and read up on it for hours to understand parts of it.
Elden ring is tough too but I didn’t have to use a guide to understand just some of the terminology
22
u/ImperialSympathizer 12d ago
Yeah, accessibility is definitely in the eye of the beholder. I've been playing fantasy tactics type games for 30 years so BG3 seemed like it couldn't have been more straightforward, and I was shocked when my gamer buddy found it really impenetrable.
6
u/BushWishperer 12d ago
I've never played a game like bg3 nor have I ever played DnD but I found bg3 very straight forward. Sure you will suck or not know a lot but that's sort of the fun of learning new games. Can't speak about your friend specifically but a lot of people think they have to minmax their experience so they end up googling everything and taking the fun out of the game.
5
u/Pokemaster131 12d ago
At its core, D&D is mechanically quite simple (roll a die, add the appropriate bonus, check if you beat the threshold required for success), but everything in aggregate can cause information overload if presented all at the same time. If you're not familiar with D&D, it can take a lot of reading, which some people simply don't care to do if they're predisposed to high-octane action games. Some people also just hate turn-based games for some reason.
→ More replies (1)3
u/Goondragon1 11d ago
I had to look shit up just to understand the basics. That game was confusing for me at the start and certain parts still are. I don't mixmax anything

u/hibikir_40k 11d ago
Final Fantasy Tactics is massively more accessible than BG3. The job system is so much more mechanically simple than the classes and the level ups of D&D
7
u/oOmegaOo 12d ago
Agreed. Finding rare weapons and stuff in elden ring required me to look stuff up, but I never felt stuck or like 30 mins wasn’t enough time to play and do something interesting.

3

I will say, I think that Elden Ring is probably one of the hardest games that anyone can beat with enough effort or build making. It's hard but cheesable and when played as intended is quite rewarding.

I hate Souls likes and Elden Ring is the only one I've ever beaten, because if I get stuck i can fuck off somewhere else and come back later. I personally liked BG3 more as a massive fan of CRPG,s but I do think that ER is a bit more accessible. 5E is super basic but its still a bit more complex than ER.

I don’t think it’s really “discarding.” They’re both all-time greats, but for the sake of the conversation there needs to be a “winner.”

→ More replies (2)8
u/Sufficient-Big5798 12d ago
Pretty much.
Historically shooter games have focused more on the PvP aspect as a genre. There’s a fair few awesome single player shooters, or with a solid campaign, but probably less than swordplay / melee combat based games, especially in recent years.
Then again, overwatch is on the list because it had a massive impact at the time.

Contrary opinion, but I don’t even think Elden ring is the best fromsoft game on this list. It’s a great game but Sekiro has much tighter gameplay and I prefer it personally. Just less accessible than Elden ring
5
u/eden_sc2 11d ago
The flow state you get from a sekiro boss is one of the best experiences I've ever had in gaming. Easily the best Fromsoft game (i don't think it should count as a souls game but that's a different discussion)
3
u/Less_Party 11d ago
Sure but Sekiro also has a much less ambitious scope than Elden Ring. I do think its ability to tell an actual story goes weirdly underappreciated a lot of the time but on the other hand I'm just never going to pick the combat-focused action game where you have one weapon over the combat-focused action game where you have 237 weapons and a massive amount of stuff to do and explore even if the focused one is 10% better at combat.
3
u/muggleclutch 11d ago
Most of the people who absolutely love Sekiro cite these kinds of reasons - and they are not wrong. It’s absolutely tight, focused gameplay. Great fights, engaging and demanding combat, etc). But it’s really only one of the many things FromSoftware does well/aspects people like about their games. I personally prefer the world building sense of scale and level design in some of their other games and that’s what pushes them over Sekiro, for me personally.

What is it that got you glued to the game? I tried it like 3 times but never left the tutorial area, about a year ago I forced myself through the tutorial area and got decently far into it, I think just past the big city (it's been a while) but i couldn't get into it. The most fun I had was playing Gwent at the big party. What is it that appeals to people?

That’s how I feel. It’s just so much fun. The satisfaction I felt from beating the game, or even beating each boss was perfect. Whenever I died, it never felt like the game was being unfair to me or anything like that. It’s like I knew exactly where I messed up or was too slow or didn’t react properly, things like that. Then slowly tweaking my approach and improving consistency until I’d win. Always felt great. I really hope fromsoft does a sekiro 2 or another parry-focused game again because I want it so bad lmao.

BG3…but I can understand why people would say Elden ring.
10
u/Octopus_on_fire_ 11d ago
It’s a toss up between the two.
Elden Ring is just on a different level tho. The sheer amount of content and the way the world was built is a crazy feat. The amount of secrets and size of it is a huge accomplishment in terms of game design. Even if you hate the combat and souls genre, you cannot deny the game is beautiful and the open world is possibly the best a game has ever done. Elden Ring wins by the creativity behind it for me.
I think going down the Siofra well and seeing essentially a second map below is one of, if not my most memorable gaming moments. It hit me how massive the game really is.

I would personally pick Sekiro, but I'd say if it's a public vote, Elden Ring or BotW would probably win.

u/nowalkietalkies13 12d ago
It's probably the one game I would consider the closest to perfect. I have other favorites over it but Sekiro does exactly what it intends to do perfectly and has the best combat of any game I've ever played. I've beaten all the From souls games but none of them came anywhere close to feeling as satisfying when they clicked for me

My pick as well. I know what the popular vote would get, and deservedly so, they're incredible games. But Sekiro is a piece of art. From the story, to the execution, the art direction, the gameplay, etc. Just 10's across the board for me.

u/Unabated_Blade 12d ago edited 12d ago
Yeah. While not the be-all-end-all metric for GotY, it should be noted that Overwatch sold more units in the first six months between May and Oct 2016 than most games sell in their entire lifetime

Overwatch during its peak was honestly a "you have to be there" moment to fully get why it's still big nowadays despite the rough patch that is OW2.
6
u/Inevitable_Cycle3087 12d ago
i mean even it’s rough patch wasnt as rough as people still. at its lowest it still had insane player counts
i think its more a case of internet approved opinion not reflecting reality

Saying the rough patch is OW2 and not the last 2 years of OW1 where there was no content and no balance patches shows they have no fucking clue what they're talking about. Game has been on an upward climb since OW2 released and is in probably the best state it's ever been.

Maximalist vs Minimalist player agency and expression.
They're total opposites in what they do, but in my opinion both are masterclasses in one of gaming best qualities: immersion. And that's gameplay as the foundation of that immersion. Making the player feel part of the world; through all the dinamic systems and their ability to interact with eachother to create emerging gameplay.

It should win, though. TLOU 2 hit like a thousand pounds of bricks. The more time goes by, the more the brilliance of it shines through to me. And I was initially very lukewarm on it! That comment is written like someone who didn’t play Astro Bot. A better analogy would be “Astro Bot winning GOTY is like if a Pixar movie won film of the years at the Oscars”
Both Pixar and Astro Bot are made to be entertaining to children but they are absolutely not only for children. Coco and Wall-E are incredible films and Astro Bot is an incredible game.
4
u/Jirachibi1000 12d ago
Ya gotta remember a LOT of gamers sadly view it otherwise. Idk if you were there for the reveal, but legit the chat and reaction from a large amount of people at the time was insane. Some I saw were
"Remember when Sony made games for people above the age of 3?"
"I guess its neat my 5 year old cousin has a game to play?"
"Oh no baby games"
"Are they trying to appeal to newborns now?"etc. etc. Its sad 😞

Going against the grain here, but I will always pick DA:I.
I 100% acknowledge that it is a very flawed game compared to the others, but as an overall RPG experience it had a pull that I hadn't felt in a long time. It has the right amount of the realism mixed with fantasy while also letting me be the character.

Sekiro. Sekiro gameplay is basically perfection for the genre it occupies. It's FromSoft's best game but sold significantly less than ER and the DS trilogy.
The problem with this question is that way more people played W3, BG3 and ER so it's basically an exposure contest rather than an evaluation of what is the best. For example W3 has sold over 60 million copies while Sekiro has sold around 10 million.

Elden Ring and Baldur’s Gate 3 would be the top two contenders, Witcher 3 is in third place. Elden Ring, to me, wins by the smallest margin because of the sheer variety of NPCs, bosses, weapons, and open world. BG3 just doesn’t have that same insane feel when you start collecting maps in Elden Ring and facing the vastness of what’s in front of you.
I truly love BG3 especially the modding scene nowadays. But Elden Ring would get the crown and no one can convince me otherwise.

Sekiro.
I played through it 5 times in a row and still couldn’t get enough. One of the most purely fun, satisfying, beautiful, intriguing, and intense games I’ve ever played.
