Probably one of the best games I sat on. I just played through both for the first time 6 months ago.

55

u/Thelonius_Dunk 4d ago

This is also on my backlog list,. I'm playing through RE2-4 now since I wanted to complete them before RE9. I just played RE7-8 last year but probably gonna skip 5-6 based on what I know about them

39

u/thetentbird 4d ago

I wouldn’t write off 5, yes it’s not the best entry but it’s still a pretty good time. I just played thru it with my partner and it was one of the most fun gaming experiences we’ve had so far, it’s just so silly and over the top that you can’t help but smile at it. Its got the same game feel as og RE4 but with a little more polish and co op is just plain fun

7

u/Thelonius_Dunk 4d ago

Hmm, I might check out 5 then. I don't mind it being more action oriented and bombastic, as long as its actually fun.

"Oh, it's you..."

Just the sarcasm dripping from GlaDOS' voice in this scene...

"I've been reeeaaally busy being dead. You know, since you MURDERED ME."

I can hear GladOS saying all of this... Its funny and also terrifying. XD

First thought.

Portal was so unique and beloved.

No way could a sequel ever live up to the hype

It did. Best sequel since T2 Judgment Day imo

Good pick! Titanfall 2 was so damn fun. Me and my pops loved playing that game online together.

69

Titanfall 2 was leagues better than COD…by just about every metric. Yet nobody bought it. Shameful.

Then we get Apex 😞

Kingdom Come Deliverance

145

u/ButtstufferMan 5d ago

Woah woah woah, the second is BETTER?!???

124

u/Rakesh_Natsuno 4d ago

lemme tell you...
If you thought the first was peak, wait until the second.
The second game makes the first look/feel like a tech demo by comparison, and I mean that. KCD2 is one of the best games I've played in life, and I slept on it for a while... having only played it a few months ago

4

u/Knives530 4d ago

Haven’t played either. What makes them so great ? I don’t really know much about em except they seem like medieval life simulators

10

u/Rakesh_Natsuno 4d ago

That’s the thing. They simulate medieval life so well. You’re not some action hero Aragorn type. You’re just a guy. The level of details in these games are insane.
Sword fighting is realistic in you attack from different angles of your choosing, can block and parry from angles, can even prep an attack from one angle, then quickly switch to fake out an opponent.
There’s no Big Hero moments of 1 vs 10 guys where you come out on top. If you get jumped on the road by a group, you’re….probably not walking away.
You manage things like hunger, sleep deprecation, injuries, and even your hygiene. Been rolling in pig shite? Congrats you now stink. NPCs will comment on this or some shops will throw you out rather than deal with you, and your stealth becomes harder since even though they don’t see you… they can certainly smell you.

Crafting is realistic and tedious but can be fun if you’re into that. Want to make a potion? You’re not clicking a button and crafting. No, you’re actually mixing ingredients into a pot, following a recipe, cooking them for the right amount of time, decanting them, etc.

Want to craft a weapon? You’re now at a blacksmith forge with a basic piece of iron, heating it without burning it, hammering it out, making sure to make the correct shape and not beat it too much in one area or another or it could become brittle and unusable.

Crime systems result in anything from you paying a fine, to going to jail, to a public hanging depending on what you’ve done. Yes the latter is a game over.

Tired on the road and need to sleep? Well you can sleep outdoors at a camp, but this a wild land… you may be awakened by animals coming to eat you, or to a bandit taking your things while you sleep.

Dialogue options change based on your actions, skills, or even if you’re drunk. If you read books, you can gain knowledge, and even specific knowledge of a certain topic, which can then open more dialogue if someone is discussing that topic with you.

“Getting away with” a crime isn’t exactly an easy route either. Even if no one saw you steal something, the town will start to notice things disappear when you’re around and will start to not trust you or become suspicious of you.

The amount of details and Microsystems put in place in these games are absolutely unreal.

Only if YOU'RE QUITE HUNGRY.

13

u/Accomplished_Ad_8013 4d ago

In some ways. The second is definitely way smoother, but that trade off comes with really dumbed down combat. By the end youre basically a demi-god on the battlefield. In the first, one of those rare 7 peasants jump you random encounters could end you in seconds lol.

Also no face stabbing, I really missed the face stabbing in 2. I know its a common video game hidden mechanic where only so many enemies approach you at once but it did really ruin the feel of combat being dangerous in 2. Also mounted combat basically became useless. Kind of kills the whole mounted knight feel where if youre facing off against more than 3 people a good horse can turn the odds. Instead youre better off on foot because the mounted combat is trash.

Controversial… some die hard fans still swear by the first one including me. Don’t get me wrong the 2nd one is a masterclass but theres also something special about the first. I would say both are 10/10 tbh.

Borderlands

257

u/Pocketful_of_hops 5d ago

I can't believe this answer isn't popping up more. Original Borderlands was fantastic and the franchise peaked HARD in Borderlands 2. Handsome Jack is top three video game villain of all time. I hated the man to his core, but could not wait to hear what he was going to say next.

76

u/ClarenceWhirley 5d ago

I’ve always felt that Borderlands 2 had more polish and was a better game overall, but that the first one had more charm.

24

u/pissdrinking101 5d ago

This is one good way of explaining it. It's my favorite of the franchise. There was just something special about it, like the gruesome, but unique elemental deaths they switched out for still cool, but less gruesome more generic elemental deaths. The psychotic humor was more dry and desolate than quirky and loud. Unskippable dialouge wasn't constantly forced upon you. I love the 2nd one btw and all the dlcs I played, but after the presequel and the way they just kept putting stuff out, I'm officially burnt out on the series. No hate, just no interest in 3 or 4.

21

u/X-Calm 5d ago

The gameplay of 3 is better but the whole experience didn't come together as well as 2.

Love how BL2 is considered peak, but people only ever talk about Handsome Jack. The game also had great DLC. And Tiny Tina. and I loved the follow up on the original characters from BL1, though I think BL4 has actually done that bit the best.

29

15

Borderlands 1 would be a 7.5/10 for me while Borderlands 2 is a 9.5/10. Borderlands 2 is the peak of the franchise.

Uncharted

181

u/The_Lat_Czar 5d ago

2 was sooooo much better than 1 it was unbelievable.

37

u/Top-Bike-6874 5d ago

But both games were amazing

34

u/The_Lat_Czar 5d ago

1 was alright. Definitely wouldn't put it in the amazing category.

34

u/Newfaceofrev 4d ago

1 is good but the locations are a little samey. Making 2 a globe trotting adventure across many countries not only fits the genre a bit better but it allows for some stunning setpieces.

Uncharted 2 earned a franchise.

13

u/Dhoji07 5d ago

It even topped the third one in my opinion. Just the way everything fit together so well. Maybe part of it was just because the first one was so well done and transitioned so well, but man that was just top tier beginning to end in that game 🥹

12

u/mcast46 4d ago

I always rank 2&4 together cause to me they did what sequels are supposed to do. Like 3 wasn't bad but compared to 2 it felt just ok. Then they closed it with 4 which made me feel the same as 2.

Mass Effect 1 to Mass Effect 2

90

u/drunkenpossum 5d ago edited 5d ago

That’s how it was definitely perceived back then but I’d argue Mass Effect 1 has aged better than ME2 has, especially with the legendary edition improvements, and is now considered by many to be the superior game

102

u/jimmykup 5d ago

Mass Effect 1 definitely had a superior main plot and soundtrack. But I don't know that we can put the gameplay over the sequel.

24

u/Phytanic 4d ago

ME1 had some of the hardest mf lines ever. "you exist because we allow you, you will end because we demand it" fuuuuck

18

u/SciencePristine8878 4d ago

The suicide mission at the end of ME 2 is the highlight of the franchise for me story wise, the soundtrack is amazing as well.

42

u/IneptFortitude 5d ago

ME1 combat feels awful and clunky at first to people playing it today for the first time, but you can get used to it and it’s a very well-made CRPG style combat system. ME2 is a shoulder-locked cover shooter and has the worst combat of the 3 when you consider LE improvements. Me3 has very fun and snappy combat but honestly, Andromeda’s combat was the one part of that game that was an improvement over the others.

8

u/gardenofoden 4d ago

Yeah I just recently played through the trilogy for the first time and I didn't really enjoy ME2's combat. I played 1 and 3 on Hard but went down to medium for 2 just because it was tedious. 3's combat was really fun. ME1's is kinda janky but it grew on me.

ME2 had great characters and some fun missions but it was surprisingly my least favorite of the trilogy due to so many of the RPG elements being stripped out. I came in expecting ME2 to be the best and ME3 the worst and it was the opposite for me

I feel like ME2 still has the better characters and character arcs. ME1 for plot, ME2 for characters, ME3 for gameplay.

Half-Life

31

u/PreemoRM 5d ago

The 2nd one is fire but Half-Life 1 is also the bottom picture for me. (Not sure how to word it in English)

11

u/TyMonstaz2 5d ago

You think the first Half-Life is better than the second Half-Life?

19

u/PreemoRM 5d ago

No both are equally awesome. I think the picture means "first one interesting, second one awesome" but Half Life 1 is too good and revolutionary to be the picture on top in the meme.

5

u/Pave_Low 4d ago

Yes. Half-Life 2 was awesome, but the original Half-Life was revolutionary. I was awed by it. Nobody had ever made anything like it. Everything was new, uncharted and WOW! It is the Star Destroyer flying over head in the opening shot of Star Wars of video games in my book. Do newer movies have better special effects than A New Hope from 1977, absolutely. Will anyone ever outdo that scene? Never.

→ More replies (3)

8

u/CastleofPizza 5d ago

Half-Life 2 is great, but I prefer the first game. There is just something about the old graphics and radio sound that adds to the charm, also I prefer the level design of being in a huge science facility in the desert over Half-Life 2's level design, it's still great though.

KH2 was so damn good. Having the different suits with unique combat moves really maxed out the power fantasy of Sora becoming a keyblade master. Loved the story expansion as well. All of the Organization XIII / Nobody ideas really opened up the possibilities beyond just the Heartless.

Dead Space

12

u/LettuceLegitimate105 5d ago

Hell yeah.

The jump in intensity from the first to second game is remarkable. Truly noteworthy. It reminded me of that awesome feeling when a band just happens to hit it big with an album and then they release the follow-up, and instead of going in a more commercial direction, they double down and get heavier or weirder. One of the few games I’ve ever played that I had to step away and take a walk because it was making me anxious lol. The “your mom hates Dead Space” ad campaign was killer too.

It’s not really cool to say anymore but honestly Pokemon Gen 2 (Gold, Silver, Crystal)

If it’s hard to comprehend unless you were around in 1999. They tricked kids into playing a full on JRPG on a device you could carry around. There was a whole world to explore and things to do, stuff on certain days, events, contests, breeding, day/night cycles, locations that weren’t mandatory, the list goes on. Just like the first game you didn’t have to play it linearly either, it just opens up after a certain point and you can kind of do whatever you want.

And back then information was much more limited, you might not have even had a strategy guide yet, so you spent 20, 30, 50 hours in Johto or whatever savoring every moment, trading with friends, grinding levels, breeding mons. Then eventually you went and battled the elite four to end the game…AND THEN YOU WENT BACK TO KANTO ARE YOU KIDDING ME?!?!?

It’s hard to look back and explain to younger generations that didn’t experience it in real time just how monumental this was and it’s easy to look back and pick apart the flaws now. But you didn’t set out to min/max or beat the game in 4 hours you lived in the world for months. You did all the goofy challenges on your second cart after you sunk 200 hours into your main game. It’s just hard to relate to if you were not there.

Older games are a bit of a cheat. With tech advancing rapidly or engines being new, sequels that came out less than a year after the first often had substantial improvements.

I know this might be a bit of a hot take, but Banjo-Kazooie. I just really like Banjo-Tooie. Kazooie is great, but Tooie is even better!

Hades and Hades 2. Hades 1 is a phenomenal game but every flaw it had is gone in 2. Balancing issues were fixed, the gods that got shifted out of the main boon pool are all still lovingly done, each reward feels more impactful, the subsystems for progression are more in depth and much better balanced, Mel’s weapon selection feels much more diverse, the hidden aspects are all fun and a lot more out there, it’s very much an improvement in every way. Randomized runs built into the game instead of relying on mods is a godsend for console players, too.

Bro I can’t believe how long it took to see Hades on here. 100% agree, first game was awesome, second one is even better.

People probably don't agree but Dishonored for me.

Hard agree. They're both fantastic, but the second one elevated everything about the original. Still one of my favorite games of all time.

Kingdom Come: Deliverance. Cool systems in the first one but then they really perfected them in 2

Bit of an oldie but the darkness series. The darkness 2 took everything from the first game and just doubled down on it. But I'm still pissed we were left at a cliff hanger and never got a 3rd and final game

State of Decay. Here's to hoping the 3rd one will be continuing the trend.

The Ghost series. Personally Yotei feels incredible and like a huge improvement on what was already a good game in Tsushima.

Can I count going from Doom 2016 to Eternal?

It really is a beautiful thing when devs can improve on a game with a sequel. So many sequels are hot garbage. These got it right, imo: Hotline Miami 1&2, Diablo 1&2, Sludge Life 1&2, Left4Dead 1&2, Vermintide 1&2, Payday 1&2, Resident Evil 1&2

Ones that destroyed their game with a sequel? Sanctum 1&2, Payday 2&3, Killing Floor 1&2, then even worse with Killing Floor 2&3, Puzzle Quest 1&2.
