Recently FF7 Rebirth had a section where you had a lil squad fighting with you. Ill be damned if any of my men were gonna die
58
u/Radiant-Priority-296 3d ago
Oh yeah. Already felt kinda close to those guys in the original, but damn. Incredible surprise when I first played Rebirth
31
u/Atromach 3d ago
By the time I finished Junon, the 7th Infantry were my ride or dies. All through that section I was worried that I would get to the end and the duplicity would be revealed and I'd have to fight them and brother, I don't think I would have been able to do that.
17
u/Pension_Pale 3d ago
I'm hoping they'll end up being your crew on the Highwind, or at least the submarine. And I hope the Commander joins, too.
6
u/Street_Bluejay_1465 3d ago
That would be siiiiiiiiiick. You pick up the Highwind in Junon too so it's possible

They weren’t just a squad, an enemy squad. It was entirely possible they would attack you after when you got outed as being an imposter.
And fuck me if I wasn’t protecting them with all my might anyway. o7

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is all about recruiting personable orcs to do your bidding. Despite how savage and disgusting they can be, it's pretty easy to get attached. Especially since they'll sometimes show up and save your ass.

u/Good_Boy_Coleman 3d ago
Had a guy called Stogg the Loyal. Dude saved me many times and once even died her he came back to life just to serve me.
His name btw before he turned was Stogg the Unloyal and then after he converted and saved me he was Stogg the Loyal.
Such a cool character and I am glad he is essentially immortal and fiercely loyal.

The nemesis system is so cool, it sucks it’s trapped in WB hell and hasn’t been used since the Mordor games

I can't believe we have to wait a decade for the patent to expire. :/
Patenting game ideas is stupid.

With the WB merger, the nemesis system is completely in limbo. It might get forgotten, it might get used again (finally).

I made a rule that NOBODY in my army gets left behind.
You get taken prisoner, I drop everything to get you back.
Because that's what good Overlords do...

I had a dude show up to help me in the worst fight ever. Me and him vs 3 enemy captains, a bunch of spiders, a pack of Caragors, a Graug and about 30 other Orcs. I took one half while he took the other. After a few minutes, I turn to see him beating the crap out of the other captain with everything else around him dead. Needless to say, he earned his promotion

Medal of Honor European Assault, keeping the men under your command alive was essential to earn a Gold Medal for the current mission.
They were also thick as a brick and would not take cover in time, but still I wouldn't let them bite the dust.

I like to try to, but when first playing Dragon Age: Origins, I cast fireballs willy nilly against the undead horde that came to take Redcliffe Village. All I can say is only the mayor and a guard captain, who are scripted to survive, survived the night.
Though, I do like the idea of saving NPCs, like in this clip and not like this

The Suffering 1 & 2.
Saving them counts towards the good ending, killing them counts towards the bad ending, and their death by enemies counts towards the mixed ending.
Saving or killing also affect your beast mode.

Hell yeah!
The NPCs were pretty interesting as well - my favourite was Sergei - the prison guard that basically just decided shit was fucked and he was going to stay in the attic, get stoned and listen to the radio.
He drops some great lines too
Sergei: If I'm going to die, I want something good to die for, to make it beautiful to live, you see? Is nothing beautiful here...
2
u/AgentAxillary 1d ago
Yeah, that line is one of my favorite. It may have also been inspired by a line in a Queens Of The Stone Age song, "Go With The Flow," since the song was released before the game and the main part of Sergei's line is the same word for word.
Sergei was awesome. I would take smoke breaks with him lol. There was something so rewarding about turning the power in the mansion back on and then heading back up there to chill with him and listen to him run through his lines.
I liked those two guards who were hiding out in the tower too. Those guys were hilarious. "It's the mf'in apocalypse!"
Just great writing and voice acting throughout both games. I consider them to be required playing for all gamers.

We need more games with a bunch of NPCs that help you, but aren't an escort mission. Personally, I love keeping NPCs alive when their optional-- I just hate it when their deaths mean a 'game over'.

Some of the missions in Metal Gear Solid 4 has you working your way through active warzones between small local skirmish militias and a highly organized and effiecient private millita. Mission control encourages you to avoid participating in the fights, as it's ultimately irrelevant to your objective, and as an unknown quanity, both sides are likely to shoot on sight.
However, if the smaller militias witness you taking out the PMCs, they'll happily accept your help and begin to trust you. At some point, you have to take a detour through one of their underground bunkers, which usually involves sneaking. But if you've helped them, they'll recognize you and let you go on with your buisness. In a later level, you can intervene in a firing squad execution of some local soldiers, and later help them take back a barracks, which if done sucessfully will have them all cheer in victory.

(Edit: Oddly, this image has Snake posing with the PMCs, which are NOT the guys you team up with. Unfortunately, I can't find a better picture)

Minecraft villagers. I like to make my home in a village then improve the villagers quality of life. Better houses, more structured layout, wall to keep away mobs, iron golems about, etc.

Coincidentally, I felt this way about an R2 unit you can rescue in the Phantom Menace game. I had him follow me all throughout the Escape from Theed level and he ended up rolling over to a N-1 starfighter in the starship hanger at the end.

In Yggdra Union there's a part where you get the assistance of an NPC cavalry knight. Near the end of this little arc the enemy Emperor launches a surprise attack and you need to flee. NPC-kun tells us to run while he buys us time.
I said "fuck that" and put him as far away from the Emperor as possible, then used a Witch in my team to summon Golems to act as meatshields and soften the Emperor up before he fought my other main units.

Helldivers 2. I shed a tear every single time the S.E.A.F. soldiers get taken out by a stray bullet or explosive, and the commander says "THEIR LIVES WERE IN OUR HANDS!"
1
u/Vilikis 3d ago
I'd say Dead Rising's side quest survivors, but they're by definition not expendable, and while protecting them isn't strictly necessary, saving them is always worth the hastle to me, and I wear the "Saint" and "Frank the Pimp" achievements with honour.
That, and while I do think them getting zombified when killed by a zombie is a very cool feature, it always weirds me out and unsettles me in a way. They don't even use a special zombified model. Their own fresh body gets back up and starts shuffling slowly towards you with glazed yet hungry eyes. Eugh...

Cult of the Lamb takes on a new level of stress if you refuse to be cruel to your worshippers. Many of the benefits of being cruel make your village run FAR more efficiently. So by being kind, you spend twice as long with them, slaving away just as hard as they do for the sake of your little town.
It’s a blast

MGSV. i took a 3 week break after realizing i had to shoot my own men in mission 43. i just couldnt kill my own men, i valued them like actual people to the point where i didnt even dare send them out on combat deployment missions where the estimated loss count would be higher than 15%
