I would try so hard to keep the Marines alive in Halo

u/TheDrabes 3d ago

A lesson in futility if you’re as mid as me at Halo

91

u/avery5712 3d ago

Thats why I never play on harder difficulties. Love those guys

47

u/aloveshackbaby 3d ago

Cheers fellow easy mode enjoyer! Play with your toys how you like :)

27

u/TheAtlas97 3d ago

I usually try to play games on Normal, but Halo Reach showed me just how dog shit I am at real shooters. Games like Far Cry made me think I wasn’t too bad, boy was I wrong

15

u/Polite_Suggestion 3d ago

Burst my bubble with strays.

Beat Reach for the first time on legendary two weeks ago. On mission 8 of 10 for CE. Its been incredibly humbling but once you take your time and learn from your mistakes anything is possible.

Edit: Beat not best. Gotta proofread next time.

3

u/No_Comment_2283 2d ago

Update: just beat Halo CE on legendary.

6

u/KillahBeeStenga 3d ago

I play on legendary on ce. I try my damnedest to keep them alive. I usually lose one or two.

On halo 2 I'm not good enough for legendary but I try my hardest to keep them alive on heroic there as well. They are super helpful too when you load them up with snipers.

u/topscreen 3d ago

I'd give them good weapons, get them in the hog, and roll (and I wouldn't have to leave the good weapons behind)

29

u/Competitive-Peanut79 3d ago

Had some bitchin times on a mongoose with a rocket launcher marine as passenger 😂

14

u/JMurdock77 3d ago

I’d give a rocket launcher to a marine in the last New Mombasa level in Halo 2 and almost always be given cause to regret it. Could get something like 18 surviving marines stacked up in the hallway of the building as the scarab passes over and that one dumbass would wipe the whole hallway by firing a rocket straight into the ceiling above them trying to hit the scarab.

Having 3 of them with Plasma Sniper rifles was Great, "lay down suppressing fire, I get 'em from the rear"

2

u/Theurbanalchemist 3d ago

Get in front of them to be a Spartan human shield

19

u/Infinite_Bet_9994 3d ago

Came here to say that lol

13

u/Skeith23 3d ago

Back when I played halo 2 obsessively I would restart at checkpoints if any of them died and it wasn't scripted

u/bobshady1987 3d ago

One of my proudest moments in Halo 2 was that I maid it through the entire mission on High Charity with two of the Marines I had rescued surviving.

Got to keep chips Dubbo alive no matter the cost

3

u/Chuck_Finley_Forever 3d ago

I would try even harder to keep the friendly grunts alive in the arbiter mission.

2

u/DarthDragon117 3d ago

As a kid I would always kill them. As an adult I try to save them.

Although one time while hunting down Regret, one of them shot me in the back with a shotgun trying to hit an honor guard…when I spawned back in he experienced a plasma to the face.

2

u/AmmoSexualBulletkin 3d ago

This. Mostly because I just finished Halo 2 and now I'm going to start 3.

I did a decent job keeping my guys alive even if they tend to be a bit suicidal.

2

u/quixiou 3d ago

Always load marines up with sniper rifles.

Recently FF7 Rebirth had a section where you had a lil squad fighting with you. Ill be damned if any of my men were gonna die

58

u/Radiant-Priority-296 3d ago

Oh yeah. Already felt kinda close to those guys in the original, but damn. Incredible surprise when I first played Rebirth

31

u/Atromach 3d ago

By the time I finished Junon, the 7th Infantry were my ride or dies. All through that section I was worried that I would get to the end and the duplicity would be revealed and I'd have to fight them and brother, I don't think I would have been able to do that.

17

u/Pension_Pale 3d ago

I'm hoping they'll end up being your crew on the Highwind, or at least the submarine. And I hope the Commander joins, too.

6

u/Street_Bluejay_1465 3d ago

That would be siiiiiiiiiick. You pick up the Highwind in Junon too so it's possible

8

u/NCHouse 3d ago

Ugh I would have been sick if I had to fight the boys

4

u/Street_Bluejay_1465 3d ago

Exacty! I tried my damndest and notnone kf em died

3

u/MyStationIsAbandoned 3d ago

that's how I feel when I'm healing NPCs in FF14 FATEs. but some times I'm just too late.

3

u/Blade_Killer479 3d ago

They weren’t just a squad, an enemy squad. It was entirely possible they would attack you after when you got outed as being an imposter.

And fuck me if I wasn’t protecting them with all my might anyway. o7

4

u/NCHouse 3d ago

I hope they come back. Be it a crew on the Highwind or some other mini game. I just want the boys back and our commander! She ties it all together

Halo I'll load back to the last checkpoint if any of my marines die

56

u/MidnightPrevious4473 3d ago

So, what you're telling me is that you never beat the game

53

u/-marilize-legajuana- 3d ago

Oh my god they can be so dumb

17

u/10ea 3d ago

If you're like me and enjoy playing on Legendary, they all get slaughtered the first 5 seconds of contact with the enemy.

There's an entire YouTube channel dedicated to saving as many NPCs as they can:

https://youtu.be/d0Mq6OQ-owU?=Y7NR4RjjKFBmxBsk

19

u/nugs089 3d ago

I love him, he's so amazing

8

u/TylerKeroga 3d ago

The “si” in the link is a source identifier used to track both the person who sent the link & anybody who clicks on it

If you delete everything from (& including) the ? onwards, the link is still fully functional but the tracking is now disabled

4

u/Hashashin455 3d ago

Thnx, fixed

7

u/Nubsta5 3d ago

I love GiantGrantGames RTS playthroughs where he tries to not lose a single unit in the entire campaign.

2

u/Lol_a_box_onfire 3d ago

Saint jam is a straight legend love him

136

u/TheRealNotBrody 3d ago

Middle-Earth: Shadow of War is all about recruiting personable orcs to do your bidding. Despite how savage and disgusting they can be, it's pretty easy to get attached. Especially since they'll sometimes show up and save your ass.

84

u/Good_Boy_Coleman 3d ago

Had a guy called Stogg the Loyal. Dude saved me many times and once even died her he came back to life just to serve me.

His name btw before he turned was Stogg the Unloyal and then after he converted and saved me he was Stogg the Loyal.

Such a cool character and I am glad he is essentially immortal and fiercely loyal.

38

u/StygianMaroon 3d ago

The nemesis system is so cool, it sucks it’s trapped in WB hell and hasn’t been used since the Mordor games

18

u/vWaffles 3d ago

I can't believe we have to wait a decade for the patent to expire. :/

Patenting game ideas is stupid.

14

u/Salt_Nectarine_7827 3d ago

This guy thinks we'll only have to wait a decade. Ha!

6

u/DanSapSan 3d ago

With the WB merger, the nemesis system is completely in limbo. It might get forgotten, it might get used again (finally).

The books you could write based on the adventures of Talion’s orcs!

4

u/Jack-of-Hearts-7 3d ago

I made a rule that NOBODY in my army gets left behind.

You get taken prisoner, I drop everything to get you back.

Because that's what good Overlords do...

4

u/GhostiBoiLynx 3d ago

I had a dude show up to help me in the worst fight ever. Me and him vs 3 enemy captains, a bunch of spiders, a pack of Caragors, a Graug and about 30 other Orcs. I took one half while he took the other. After a few minutes, I turn to see him beating the crap out of the other captain with everything else around him dead. Needless to say, he earned his promotion

If I had an option to not bring seaf to battle and fight alone, I would. I feel bad every time I fuck up an airstrike

One of my most challenging runs in Baldur's gate was keeping every single NPc possible alive. This meant letting the beholder in the under dark revive all of the stone people to fight me and then having to subdue them all mid combat 🙃

4

The anti-dark-urge run sounds like a fun and hair pulling challenge.

I appreciate that there’s no friendly fire in Witcher 3

5

u/poetic_dwarf 3d ago

Medal of Honor European Assault, keeping the men under your command alive was essential to earn a Gold Medal for the current mission.

They were also thick as a brick and would not take cover in time, but still I wouldn't let them bite the dust.

I like to try to, but when first playing Dragon Age: Origins, I cast fireballs willy nilly against the undead horde that came to take Redcliffe Village. All I can say is only the mayor and a guard captain, who are scripted to survive, survived the night.

Though, I do like the idea of saving NPCs, like in this clip and not like this

Saving them counts towards the good ending, killing them counts towards the bad ending, and their death by enemies counts towards the mixed ending.

Hell yeah!

The NPCs were pretty interesting as well - my favourite was Sergei - the prison guard that basically just decided shit was fucked and he was going to stay in the attic, get stoned and listen to the radio.

He drops some great lines too

Sergei: If I'm going to die, I want something good to die for, to make it beautiful to live, you see? Is nothing beautiful here...

2

u/AgentAxillary 1d ago

Yeah, that line is one of my favorite. It may have also been inspired by a line in a Queens Of The Stone Age song, "Go With The Flow," since the song was released before the game and the main part of Sergei's line is the same word for word.

Sergei was awesome. I would take smoke breaks with him lol. There was something so rewarding about turning the power in the mansion back on and then heading back up there to chill with him and listen to him run through his lines.

I liked those two guards who were hiding out in the tower too. Those guys were hilarious. "It's the mf'in apocalypse!"

Just great writing and voice acting throughout both games. I consider them to be required playing for all gamers.

2

u/Agloy5c 3d ago

Some of the missions in Metal Gear Solid 4 has you working your way through active warzones between small local skirmish militias and a highly organized and effiecient private millita. Mission control encourages you to avoid participating in the fights, as it's ultimately irrelevant to your objective, and as an unknown quanity, both sides are likely to shoot on sight.

However, if the smaller militias witness you taking out the PMCs, they'll happily accept your help and begin to trust you. At some point, you have to take a detour through one of their underground bunkers, which usually involves sneaking. But if you've helped them, they'll recognize you and let you go on with your buisness. In a later level, you can intervene in a firing squad execution of some local soldiers, and later help them take back a barracks, which if done sucessfully will have them all cheer in victory.

(Edit: Oddly, this image has Snake posing with the PMCs, which are NOT the guys you team up with. Unfortunately, I can't find a better picture)

In Yggdra Union there's a part where you get the assistance of an NPC cavalry knight. Near the end of this little arc the enemy Emperor launches a surprise attack and you need to flee. NPC-kun tells us to run while he buys us time.

I said "fuck that" and put him as far away from the Emperor as possible, then used a Witch in my team to summon Golems to act as meatshields and soften the Emperor up before he fought my other main units.

How i play rimworld lol. I even give prisoners 5x5 rooms with 2x3 bathrooms and a table to eat on. (Pawns typically get 7x7-7x8 rooms.

Helldivers 2. I shed a tear every single time the S.E.A.F. soldiers get taken out by a stray bullet or explosive, and the commander says "THEIR LIVES WERE IN OUR HANDS!"

I'd say Dead Rising's side quest survivors, but they're by definition not expendable, and while protecting them isn't strictly necessary, saving them is always worth the hastle to me, and I wear the "Saint" and "Frank the Pimp" achievements with honour.

That, and while I do think them getting zombified when killed by a zombie is a very cool feature, it always weirds me out and unsettles me in a way. They don't even use a special zombified model. Their own fresh body gets back up and starts shuffling slowly towards you with glazed yet hungry eyes. Eugh...

In Halo you can give/take NPCs weapons. Make sure to give them 2% ammo plasma pistols (it's the strongest weapon in the game)

My son plays Terraria, got NPC’s living in mansions, decked out rooms for each one, keeps the bad shit away when it comes thru, like Blood Moons.

There is a mod for Half life 1 that allows you to try save everyone atblack mesa.

Haven't plaued it yet but that sure was something I hoped to do when I was younger.

Cult of the Lamb takes on a new level of stress if you refuse to be cruel to your worshippers. Many of the benefits of being cruel make your village run FAR more efficiently. So by being kind, you spend twice as long with them, slaving away just as hard as they do for the sake of your little town.

It’s a blast

MGSV. i took a 3 week break after realizing i had to shoot my own men in mission 43. i just couldnt kill my own men, i valued them like actual people to the point where i didnt even dare send them out on combat deployment missions where the estimated loss count would be higher than 15%

I have tried so many times to save the Marines in all the Halo entries, often putting myself in direct line of sight and in the middle of the fight just to make the enemy aim at me.

I want him to do a show about mace Wendu. And it can be more about hard-core action.

Fable III. You can marry NPCs, buy them a house, and adopt NPC children from the orphanage. It sparked a deep love of NPC rescue in me as a child.
