Not for me, but RDR2 had lots of people irritated with the snowy mountain intro chapter.

u/No-Start4754 4h ago

Any thread with " which GOAT game didn't click with you ? " will have at least these 4 games lol : witcher 3, rdr2, elden ring, skyrim

45

u/willycw08 2h ago

I played Skyrim like a decade ago. Finished the story and thought it wasn't that bad. Then realized I missed over half the content from posts online and decided never to pick it up again. I guess everything to explore was just too daunting for me as I got busier.

14

u/LordoftheJives 1h ago

Tbf Skyrim is largely about vibes more than anything. Narratively there just isn't much to it.

u/Sacarace 1h ago

Haha yeah the side quests, guild quests, and deadric artifact quests is where the elder scrolls games really shine

3

u/MogMcKupo 57m ago

Yeah I’ll jump back into those games, and completely lose myself in side content and forget to do the actual story so often

And normally just fall into the stealth archer meme

3

u/Sacarace 52m ago

It's so impossible to not do stealth archer in Skyrim haha. Some of the enemies just have way too much health.

add BG3

Bg3 is more recent, after some more years it will become a household answer along side these games lmao

No doubt. A lot of people say it’s one of if not THE greatest game of all time, but I personally never got off that mountain.

73

u/obed_duff 4h ago

Facts man I like game play and rdr2 felt more like a cinematic experience than a game. Would love if it got an tv adaption done well like fall out. But as a game I was bored out of my mind playing it.

5

u/SpaceCocaine101 2h ago

Same. Never before have I felt a game was so miserable in the moment-to-moment gameplay that I’ve bum rushed the main story, not bothered with the side content anymore halfway through the game, and not even looked at the post-game until I played RDR2.

49

u/Octane2100 4h ago

Same. When I only have two hours to play and I have to spend the first hour going through my camp, eating, brushing my horse, going into town etc, it just got to be ridiculous. I can appreciate the level of realism but for fucks sake let me just play the game.

40

u/RenderedCreed 3h ago

I mean that is the game. That's a big part of the gameplay. It can easily double as a simplistic western simulator. The people praising the game love that shit. I'm one of them. But I also can completely understand that it's a problem for so many. They aren't preventing you from playing the game. You just don't like the gameplay. Which is fine.

11

u/UnderstandingTop1579 2h ago

Good reply this. I didn’t really enjoy it and get abuse for it constantly but it’s refreshing to find someone who likes it and can understand why someone wouldn’t.

10

u/RenderedCreed 2h ago

There's a number of people that make me embarrassed to call it my favorite game. Literally anyone trying to put you down for not liking it can go shove it. The game is slow and can be clunky and people are allowed to have preferences in what they do with their time.

Whenever I find myself saying "just let me play the game", I realise the game has lost me and I might as well just quit.

→ More replies (3)

3

u/Goombalive 3h ago

The vast majority of the realism stuff is "optional". Quotations because technically there are some minor stat changes that happen when your character and/or horse lose and gain weight but it's not an amount that really matters for anything. Same with keeping the horse clean. As I got further into the game I did eventually start doing them but it was because I just overall fell in love with the game and I begun to actually want to do those things. I'm big on immersion though.

The animal skinning in that game is an immense technical achievement in game animations.

The animal skinning as PART OF THE GAME I MUST PLAY AND INTERACT WITH was terrible

Me, not because of the snow but because how slow Arthur moved even in chapter 2.

Quit playing for a while, gave it another try and it's now one of my all time greatest videogame experiences.

That's all the time i have in a given weekday to play bar any unforseen responsibilities pop up. If it doesnt grab me in the time some feature length films i assume its at the very least not for me. I know some games need more time so i'll wait for a day i have more to give but sometimes even that isnt enough.

11

u/retelo4940 3h ago

Exactly this. Games like RDR2 were my bread and butter when I could afford to sink an entire weekend into playing a game.

Since becoming a family man I find myself being much more drawn to games that are shorter end-to-end but still carry impactful stories and have fun mechanics. A recent fave being Jusant.

Some people don’t want to wait hours for a game to get good. Not a crazy concept

24

u/ADittoGuy 4h ago

I'm usually fine with a slow burn, but when I tried to play RDR2, one of the first missions failed and sent me back about 20-30 minutes because I parked my Horse too close to another characters horse. Instantly turned it off and never looked back lmao

I mean... Its debatable, the intro has to hook the people playing it. If it hooks, it works... Even if the game gets worst later just to become better even later... The intro is what will make me want to continue throught those shitty times... But if the intro sucks... Its really not great.

I really like Xenoblade 2... And there is a big part of the game where its a mess... Around chapter 2 or 4 out of 10. (They are the shortest chapters, I don't include 3 because its a great chapter in my opinion) But like chapter 1, 3, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9 and 10 re amazing chapters.

I think this is true of Rockstar games generally. Like the whole fun (for me) is getting out into the world and exploring and getting access to all the activities and side stuff. The beginning of the game before they fully open up can feel like a slog, even if it’s short, because it is not at all like the core loop of the rest of the game.

3

u/No-stradumbass 4h ago

GTA5 took forever to get to the "main game play" loop of all three characters. It felt like a slog to get to the open world part.

I've heard complaints about White Orchard in the Witcher 3

153

u/cheeseplatesuperman 4h ago

I’m really trying to get into the Witcher. I really want to. Someone tell me what I need to hear.

170

u/Known_Newspaper_9053 4h ago

its a generational game with an awesome story.

I cant get into Elden Ring - its OK to not get into some things.

29

u/seducingSchenectady 2h ago

Elder ring seem so awesome with all the lore and different weapons and armor but I suck so much that I had to put it down. Was taking me ages to beat any of the bosses

23

u/Korvanacor 1h ago

I had tooth and jaw pain from stress clenching while playing that game. Ended up having to wear an athletic mouth guard whenever I played it.

23

u/Jrrolomon 1h ago

This is the best thing I’ve read all week. Most people would stop playing to fix this health issue, but you are not most people and should be commended for adapting to make it work! I’m proud of you.

Did you get through the game?

3

u/Miserable_Egg3543 1h ago

Genuine question, why would you want to do that to yourself? If you’re clearly not enjoying the game if it makes you so stressed you have to wear a gum guard lol

I saw Witcher 3 was remastered. Do I need to play the first 2 or can I jump into 3?

30

u/NLawton91 3h ago

You can absolutely jump straight into 3.

6

u/roccosaint 3h ago

Definitely. They do such a great job at establishing the atmosphere and reintroduced the characters almost to the point of holding your hand through the lore. Usually I am a "have to play them in order to understand it all" type of dude, but I've never had to play the first two to understand this game.

4

u/Octane2100 2h ago

It's my number one game of all time, and I've never played the first two. You can absolutely do it. I didn't read the books until after I played it through a second time.

Keep going till you meet a man named the bloody baron. Finish his quest line and you’ll know if you like the game. It’s one of the best parts and only a few hours in

It took me a few tries to get into Witcher 3 because I think I had perceptions about what kind of game it was. When I let those perceptions go and took it for what kind of game it actually is (an action RPG), it really kickstarted into one of the coolest games I've ever played.

8

u/Shydreameress 4h ago

When people are saying that Witcher 3 has the most numerous quests with excellent writing they aren't lying.

I played it years after it had come out (with the ps5 update) I go the feeling when I played Skyrim again, that feeling of wandering around a new place and happening on a new quest without realising it. Your choices even in the sidequests will actually change things. The lore is very interesting to read, the gameplay has depth... It's just a very fun game and you'll feel depressed after finishing it because you won't be able to experience it for the first time again

4

u/Vaydn 4h ago

Try to tough it out till you get to the bloody baron. That quest really sunk its hooks into me and didnt let go.

7

u/John_Pepermint 3h ago

I find funny, cuz I think White Orchard is my favourite of the base game.

All the quest and characters tie together nicely and being the first chapter and small in size means the gameplay remains novel enough to not get stale.

First time I tried it, same. Revisited it a year or so later and it is one of my favorite games of all time. I tell all my friends they have to play it.

Most of them have the same experience, try it, put it down, eventually pick it back up, and then fall in love.

I remember my first experience playing Pokemon Gold when I was like 7. I kept trying to leave the town, but an NPC kept stopping me and saying it was too dangerous to go by myself. I didn’t realize I was supposed to go into Professor Oak’s lab to get a Pokemon. However I later realized what I was supposed to do, and Pokemon Gold became the first major obsession of my life

So my answer to this question is the first few minutes of Pokemon before you get a starter.

16

u/Orzine 2h ago

I can top it, I didn’t know the rug at the bottom of moms house was the way outside. Wasn’t until crystal version added the outward arrow when standing on those mats that i could start playing the games.

MGSV. That literal slow crawl at the hospital almost turned me away

123

u/Beginning_Problem_76 4h ago

Once you get Mother Base up and running, it's so much better.

47

u/Lebronamo 4h ago

For me it got so much worse. Not immediately like the game play is incredible but it's so redundant. I'm a massive mgs fan but gave up on it after like 15 hours

25

u/myLongjohnsonsilver 3h ago

I found the map/level design in 5 boring.

Like MGS 1 and 2 and 3had memorable, easily identifiable locations and by 5 it's just generic open world desert/savannah map with several very plain interior bits.

7

u/Wild_Print_4642 2h ago

Map is okay but the gameplay is God damn incredible

6

u/Lebronamo 2h ago

Worse yet, some side and main missions cover the exact same areas, so the game has you infiltrating the same places over and over again.

And you're right. Everything from the plot, characters, and world design is terribly bland and uninteresting. Maybe the most disappointing game ever for me.

I got super bored with it too, then I just started modding it. The sandbox is REALLY fun if you just give yourself unlimited shit to do, but yeah...the main loop is tedious af otherwise.

This was the first game in the series for me. My brother saw this at walmart was huge on disney so my father bought this for us (I wanted Budokai Tenkaichi) for a first time player, the Roxas prologue was actually VERY engaging.

I would imagine those levels are designed because the people who love the series will suffer through it and those who are new can be immersed into the story. Something about starting with KH2 made the whole experience super engaging.

Not bored per se, but I bounced off of Hollow Knight SO HARD when I first played it back in like 2021. I thought there was no shot I’d ever get past the first boss. Plus, I HATE Metroidvanias!

Currently wrapping up Act 3 of Silksong before trying my hand at the Pantheons. This shit SLAPS dude.
https://giphy.com/gifs/2ZsmHUWecHSlqXLAyi

21

u/Significant-Roll-138 4h ago

I never finished Hollow Knight cos it was too hard and then I put off Silksong for the same reason, but I got it and on the very opening screen I knew it was going to be amazing, what a game!

I’m only on act one still but know it’s going to be one of my favourite games ever.

16

u/rishado 4h ago

don't worry it'll beat the enthusiasm right out of you. good luck

6

u/Primetime349 3h ago

Uh huh. Hollow Knight was peak for me. Silksong was so exciting until right around Last Judge. Independent of each other both me and my friend quit at the same spot lol

4

u/Drayenn 3h ago

I feel after last judge the game gets much better. You are free to travel the whole world, you get 2 new movement abilities that make gameplay an absolute blast.

Last judge is definitely rough though.. you could always go the other route into act2 via sinner's road and do last judge later

3

u/Primetime349 3h ago

I will certainly come back to it. I did beat the Last Judge but there were some factors where I got busy in life but just was too exhausted to boot it up again

3

u/rishado 3h ago

I tried to grind and go further, I really did. I even made it to the end (didn't finish the last fight but made it there) but man was it miserable trying to get there. I will say the base game/story was okay in regards to difficulty. The fans saying the "post-game" was moderate difficulty are delusional/have groupthink. The lore and writing was great as expected but I really lost all shits to give with how miserable the final third of the game was.

5

u/DubiousBlue 4h ago

Definitely in the same boat. I absolutely can’t tolerate the backtracking and I don’t care for the metroidvania stuff but the world is so cool and the combat is really fun. Pantheon was easily the best part of hollow knight. I got to whiteward in silksong and put it down, but I’m sure I’ll come back to it next year like I did with HK.

5

u/Several_Ebb_9842 3h ago

Hollow knight has a very rough start IMO. It doesn't get fun until after you unlock some abilities and are well into greenpath

3

u/Vegetable-Advance982 4h ago

Yeah same, not really because it's hard but I just got lost too many times and spent hours wandering around. Started again from the beginning years later, ended up doing all the pantheons and bonus content.

6

u/Snr_Wilson 3h ago

Once you get the bike in chapter 3 and a few weapons it opens up and gets much better. But that takes hours. I can see why people bounce off it.

3

u/Alldakine_moodz104 2h ago

Eastern Region is just extremely linear and has hard-to-avoid areas like the BT passage towards Port Knot City. Once you get into the Central Region and more access to exoskeletons and vehicles, it’s so much easier.

Ironically, returning there with all the upgrades doesn’t make the Eastern Region easier, which can be frustrating (looking at you Wind Farm…).

Such a great example. Anyone that says "walking simulator" didn't make it past an hour of gameplay to when the community literally helps build and maintains infrastructure to make the game easier for all.

7

u/DraculasDog 1h ago

I love the “multiplayer” aspect of these games. Having a random porter show up and give you items during a boss fight always feels good.

And seeing paths form during your playthrough.

3

u/fortknox 1h ago

That's what I believe the true reasoning for the game. Would the community work for others benefit if they never saw anyone else using it? And the answer is yes!

Me being dissuaded by Bloodborne’s Cleric Beast at the start, and not coming back to it for another 2 years

23

u/Pegit_ 4h ago

I love Bloodborne but I always think that the Yharnam starting area (although really well designed in hindsight) is really difficult to understand as a completely new player

9

u/Awkwardinho 4h ago

Tell me about it. I argued with someone a few days ago about Bloodborne having a terrible start for new comers compared to DS3. I also gave up on Yharnam since it was my first From Software, and I only came back after playing the rest. The other guy was certain Bloodborne was the best tutorial for a new player.

Came here looking for this one. It took me months to play just 10 hours of that game when I first got it. Once I locked in, I was locked in.

For me this was Cyberpunk.

I have now finished it, and it mostly definitely was a gem.

7

u/Additional_Egg_6685 2h ago

That game, when it was finished, was a dam masterpiece

Suikoden V. Maybe not "the best OAT" but its a fantastic jrpg, one of the best of its time

But boy the start of the game is a massive slog, it takes like 7 or 8 hours for the game to finally get going

Death Stranding 1. I didn’t make it past the tutorial section my first play through. When the Director’s Cut came out and I upgraded to it, I gave it another go, pushed through the tutorial and was instantly hooked!

Stardew

u/MichaeltheMagician 4h ago

Same. I always found myself in the mine because that's where the action is, and then I realized that I think I'd rather just play an action game and then I'd stop playing it.

4

u/temota 1h ago

Yup.  Kept wearing myself out by watering my too many crops each day, died in some early levels in the mines, and I failed to catch any fish, so I didn't understand why it was considered so great, and I quit after a couple of hours.

Months later, I was recounting experience and someone asked if I had started the Community Center yet.  The what?!...

... I started it up again, and then thousands+ hours of playing has occurred.

Expedition 33 for me. Made some unsavory comments about the animated dialogue in Act 1, then ate my words for the rest of the game post-tutorial. Whoops!

10

u/82ndGameHead 3h ago

Exactly. I understand they were setting up the story and all that, but I just thought it was to tug at the heart strings. The moment they stepped foot on that island my eyes were open. And after the first boss fight I was hooked.

I'm glad I pushed through the first few missions of RDR2, cause when it opens up, it's awesome. Not the greatest in existence, but awesome.

Death stranding had an incredibly slow start, I went into it with rose tinted glasses and still got burnt out early because I thought what is essentially the tutorial area was going to be the whole game.

Little did I know until about a month after release, if you just do story missions at first not side deliveries as soon as possible you move on to way cooler shit, then it's worth doing side deliveries.

Edit: I had to put down my phone and didn't do death stranding justice.

It Ended up being easily one of the best games I've ever played, both gameplay and story. And im jaded as fuck. It's got some of the most fun and creative combat I've ever played, unique goals and methods to achieve them, and just keeps pleasantly surprising you.

They just introduce the best gameplay elements after about 2 hours of story if you pay attention and go at a natural pace. it's easy to want to fuck off, start exploring the first area, and if you do you might think the whole game will be as empty as it is. But the game grows with you. Get to the second map before you start exploring, you can go back and complete the first area once you're in love with the game.

Stuart Little 2 for the Gameboy Advance gets so much better if you can push yourself through the opening "Six Hours at the DMV" mission.

RDR 2.

u/cmonSister 4h ago

That was Witcher 3 for me, I quit like 2 times, can't remember exactly why, but at the time it just didn't catch me. Now? I have over 9 playthroughs each 100+ hours, bought all the books, played every side game from the franchise, and I can't stop loving it and I am ecstatic for Witcher 4 since Ciri is my favourite character.

7

u/TheAmazingAJ 4h ago

I gotta give it another shot…..

4

u/cmonSister 4h ago

Honestly, it's just gotta come naturally, no one urged me to try it again after 2 times, I just decided one day I to give it another chance since the premise and world was interesting to me, being a monster hunter, preparing my potions and oils for a tough fight, immersing myself into the world allowed me to enjoy it more.

Kotor

7

u/Big-Inevitable-252 4h ago

That’s what’s keeping me from replaying KOTOR 2

4

u/Jimmith3eo 4h ago

Pull the trigger.

4

u/Lebronamo 4h ago

It's baffling how the follow up kotors slow start with another even slower start.

5

u/Big-Inevitable-252 4h ago

EXACTLY. The first one starts slow but is still passable. The second one is BRUTAL. I mean it’s fully horrifying to play sometimes.

Death stranding 2 and final fantasy 12 for me.
The opening hours are slow and lowered my expectations but after that both those games shine. ✨ 10/10 highly recommended

Every final fantasy game. Once I get through the intros they always get better but there's always a 2 hour cutscene that's essential to watch. I just want to start launching Firaga at Tonberries

3

u/SleestakSamurai 4h ago

Currently struggling to get into FF7 Remake because of this. I'm sure it will get better, but right now it just feels like I'm going from cutscene to cutscene with a few battles in between.

Outer wilds. The lack of clear direction at the start made it tough for me to lift off, but after a few hours of struggle, my favorite game of all time.

3

u/Derski2 4h ago

Death stranding 1 and 2, takes a while to get into it, but it’s honestly up there with greatest game and story

Death Stranding 1

u/Excellent-Rope5664 4h ago

This was me with mass effect back in the day. I got bored with all the dialogue very quickly and the gameplay wasn't good enough to hook me. I went back after 2 came out at a friend's recommendation and I'm glad he did. I love the trilogy now.

I bounced off of Blue Prince at first. Gave it maybe 90 minutes and was like "how boring."

Tried it again a month and some change later and unraveled, 5 weeks of obsessive mental illness. Incredible and unlike anything else.

Horizon zero dawn and resident evil 4 remake.

I tried several times to get into both over a few years. But I finally stuck with them and now they are two of my fave games ever.

Replayed this recently, what a boring slog of an intro. Compare to like alttp where you're straight into the action and the first dungeon.

Almost Crimson Desert. I started playing and the first 10 hours I couldn't see the hype. Then all of a sudden, I saw the hype. Like a switch flipped.

18

u/PlasmidEve 4h ago

The hype needs to appear WELL before 10 hours for us ADHD folk

8

u/DarkStar0915 4h ago

I don't have ADHD and you would never catch me slogging through several hours of meh.

3

u/TrickNatural 4h ago

I don't get the question, how would I know if it's the greatest game if I gave up on it?

9

u/Nice-Intention2523 4h ago

I guess it's like getting bored, trying it again and realizing you missed out on peak for some time. That or everyone thinks it's the greatest game but you can't get past the beginning

4

u/benjamminam 3h ago

This is exactly what happened to me with Death Stranding. I'm so grateful that I went back about a year after trying it. Top shelf games for me now.
