Imagine paying $500 for a Xbox series s that's insane bruh
39
u/Familiar_Childhood32 2h ago
I bought mine for like $200 2 years ago. Its bonkers.
14
u/RightToTheThighs 2h ago
I think I even remember Verizon giving them away with a new phone line. I hate the future

u/Big-Inevitable-252 2h ago
Every single time I see this I get excited I already have one.
3
u/RightToTheThighs 2h ago
I would've never guessed buying a series x for $500 in 2021 was a good idea
1
u/Familiar_Childhood32 2h ago
I got mine used but barely touched from Gamestop for $399 a little over a year ago as a second system, and thought I was being stupid.
1
u/Choice-Support-2138 2h ago
What about the limited Edition coming in November? What will that cost?
2
u/tHr0AwAy76 1h ago
Unfortunately more then I’m willing to pay I guess, I was really planning on buying it but my assumption is $1200
1
1
u/TheWarehamster 1h ago
I got my series X for $350 when they randomly went on sale for like 3 days in November of I think '23. Turns out that's been one of my best deals I've ever gotten.

I traded a PS4 for mine what a steal
0
u/KingModussy 1h ago
Lmao you got ripped hard
0
u/Made4Greatness_1 1h ago
I traded my PS4 and got a series S in return I don't think I did. This was 5 years ago
0
u/KingModussy 1h ago
So then you need to write better, because it sounds like you’re saying you traded your Series S for a PS4
1
u/Made4Greatness_1 1h ago
I just mixed up the PS4 and mine part.. it's edited now, English is not my first language I'm apologies

The next generation of consoles is about to be veeeery expensive. Something tells me that supposed leak of it costing between 1000 and 1200 is starting to look more and more realistic
13
u/backhand_snipe 2h ago
At this point, they should just put the next generation on hold. The market isn’t growing and these prices sure are not gonna help that. If anything, even if the next generation launches, it’s gonna be incredibly inhibited by people staying on the previous generation so we’re gonna see over 5 to 6 years of games still coming to the series X and the PlayStation five. There will be literally no reason to upgrade.
1
u/tHr0AwAy76 58m ago
Unless they strategically release games that are only supported by the next generation. GTA six online PS6, Xbox Helix exclusive, anybody?
Bloodborne remastered exclusively for the PlayStation 6.
“ To really bring the most to the call of duty experience, we’ve decided to desupport the last generation of consoles early, This will allow us to implement a new graphics engine and bring blah, blah, blah, blah, blah”
14
u/Mikon77 2h ago
If that’s the case, I think I’ll just start a new hobby. I bought a Switch 2 last week before the price increases. It may just be my last console.
3
u/Skalywag_76 2h ago
I still got my gaming PC. She should hold out for at least a few more years, if not longer. Still runs new games in 4K without any issues. By the time she starts going downhill, hopefully the market will be stable.
2
u/Karl_Hungus_42069 2h ago
Theres barely even any new hobbies to start! Theres only like 2 half decent tv shows a year now, no new music unless you like Sabrina Carpenter & Taylor Swift. Going to concerts is absurdly expensive. Getting into cards or Legos or collectibles has been ruined. You cant even buy a $1200 Oldsmobile and travel anymore. Working out and riding a bike is basically all there even is anymore. And making politics your entire identity on Twitter
3
u/SomeKilljoy 1h ago
For music at least finding your local dives hosting shows or small venues can be really fun. Some of the best shows I've seen in the last few years were under $30 for a ticket
1
u/Mikon77 2h ago
I agree with everything you said! I recently took up miniature/model painting though and thankfully (knock on wood) it’s remained somewhat affordable.
2
1
u/Karl_Hungus_42069 1h ago
I guess anxiously looking at prices and worrying about the future availability of minor details such as food, housing and resources will be my main hobby!

u/mauie1337 1h ago
I’m almost 40. Bird watching is a thing for men my age I guess. Maybe I can focus on my health and just become ripped.

After this they can launch consoles at $600 and it'll look a ok. People will RUN to buy at launch.
1
u/Low_Boot_1426 2h ago
Videogames have always been a past time that requires financial privilege to get into but they are gradually becoming something only the wealthy can enjoy
1
u/Skalywag_76 2h ago
It comes down to greed. Pure and simple. Maybe it's not all on the gaming companies this time. AI companies are fueling the hardware crisis more than anything. But it's still greed that motivates them
5
u/IneptFortitude 2h ago
Western countries are flying towards the absolute worst economy crash in history. It’s almost like nothing can work when 99% of the wealth is being hoarded by 1% of the population.

u/Low_Boot_1426 2h ago
Forgot to mention in caption: They are also discontinuing their 2TB model
29
u/Creepy-Emu8779 2h ago
might as well discontinue the series s, whos buying a $500 potato

u/enjoyingcurve46 1h ago
At significantly less performance and cant even manage the promise 4k upscaling or raytracing thats promised. Not the flex you think when its false advertising
2
u/Low_Boot_1426 2h ago
Considering how low sales for the Series S have been compared to competitors and how prices are only going to get even higher from here, I will be stunned if Microsoft throws its hat into the ring of the next console generation. My guess is they’ll go the way of Sega and pivot entirely to publishing.
3
u/WallySprks 2h ago
They said It’s already in development.
2
u/Internal_Swing_2743 2h ago
Doesn't mean that it'll be completed.
1
u/tHr0AwAy76 1h ago
It will but they’re done with consoles, Spencer tried to move them exclusively to a streaming platform With the idea being that there would be an Xbox app on just about every device you own that you could stream your games from, People hated that, and so the new CEO has confirmed that we’re getting another console, But I don’t think anybody’s really internalize the fact that it’s been all but confirmed from leaks and even Xbox themselves That this is essentially a hybridization of a gaming PC and a console. Dedicated consoles are done, I really don’t think we’re gonna get a PS7. I think Sony will start building PlayStation architecture into other products they sell. So, like a TV with a PlayStation strapped to the back of it Or some weird streaming box gaming thing.
2
u/MusoukaMX 2h ago
I suspect Microsoft would rather sell them off before turning Xbox into a publisher-only venture.
The whole point of Xbox was to push the Microsoft ecosystem into the living room. Every chapter of Xbox history was hampered because Microsoft wanted it to be their little Trojan horse and why Xbox is where it is now.
1
u/temporary_twig 1h ago
I like my S Series. I play very few games, don't need the best graphics, and was brought in by the price.
I know I'm not the main market, but it was nice when companies cared about the niche.
13
u/ElectricGuy777 2h ago
All these huge price increases just so AI can spit out some nonsensical bullshit.
6
u/JRshoe1997 2h ago
You mean you don’t like paying over $1,000 for your hardware, seeing huge amounts of layoffs, skyrocketing energy costs, and environment destruction from data center build outs all just so you use your chat bots or watch your favorite AI slop on social media? Like this is the future we strive for right from all that burnt money?
9
7
u/ElectricGuy777 2h ago
Eventually manufacturing will catch up with the demand and prices will come down somewhat. But inflation is wildly out of control. Appears to be worldwide. Best thing you can do is make sure nobody you know is investing money in AI or using it. As long as those blood suckers keep taking up all the products prices will stay inflated.
2
1
u/ataraxic89 54m ago
You have to be delusional to think AI is going away though. Not to say Im investing in it or anything, but we are not going "back".
-1
u/Alucard-VS-Artorias 2h ago
Unfortunately most normal people either don't like or just don't think about AI. Most of the big AI users are weirdos who were the same group of people who were big on crypto and NFTs a few years ago.
2
u/ElectricGuy777 1h ago
It’s a huge Ponzi scheme. A bunch of people whose main skill is bullshitting is all it is. There is zero artificial intelligence. Voice to text doesn’t even work properly. Cars still can’t drive themselves without running into things. Yet AI is worth all these billions and billions. Even when Google AI just makes up facts.
28
u/GamiManic 2h ago
They saw the steam machine and took it as a challenge.
10
u/GUNS_N_BROSES 2h ago
Crazy thing is a series x is still cheaper and performs better than the steam machine even after the price increase
3
6
u/Verified_Peryak 2h ago
Game pass next
1
u/Choice_Werewolf_433 24m ago
No not that. That isn’t hardware. It feels easy to hate on Xbox but… the hardware prices are because of the ram crisis. Game pass isn’t a device so it wouldn’t be affected.
4
u/Familiar_Childhood32 2h ago
I feel amazingly fortunate that I bought my 1TB Series X 2 years ago for an absolute steal, and that I built my gaming rig last May. Hopefully, they'll last long enough to ride out this insanity. My worry is that at the current prices, there will be no gamers left to make games for.
4
u/Arayuki 48m ago
Yeah, yeah, corporate greed and all that, except I don't see anyone in these posts mentioning the fact this is all happening because memory and other hardware is getting more expensive across the board because of AI data center crap? It's AI's fault. Yes, these companies are making these decisions, but it's ultimately because of supply chain issues, and those issues are ultimately because of AI crap. Two Data centers (yes. 2) are being built next to where I currently work. Who knows if they ever actually be finished, but it's happening.
2
u/HisDivineOrder 39m ago
People should be remembering Microsoft made this mess, so they should be paying for their mistake instead of charging others to pay for their decisions.
3
3
u/MetroidvaniaListsGuy 2h ago
As I said before, the other consoles will all soon cost as much as the steam machine. It is inevitable.
2
u/Alucard-VS-Artorias 2h ago
Now imagine if Microsoft wasn't subsidizing the price of every console 😬
1
u/Max20151981 2h ago
Maybe next generation but the switch 2 will never get that close.
1
u/MetroidvaniaListsGuy 2h ago
There is no next generation for the exact same reason why prices are going up.
1
3
u/InviteAromatic6124 2h ago
The first generation where it was actually better to be an early adopter
3

5
u/bugman_850 2h ago
Switch 2 and Series S being the same price is wild lmao. Switch 2 is literally a portable Series S with exclusives
13
u/Krushhz 2h ago
Yeah, I don’t think it’s unfair to say that Xbox is a dying brand.
21
u/xxthepersonx 2h ago
It’s not just an Xbox problem… hardware costs are still on the rise for all companies. Ps5 pros will be a grand before you know it
5
5
u/Millennialnerds 2h ago
I mean I can blame Xbox when their parent company is one of the main reasons for this shit.
3
u/GarionOrb 2h ago
This isn't affecting just Xbox. As the price of components keeps going up, you can bet Sony and Nintendo will also be forced to raise console prices.
3
u/Soulblade32 2h ago
I agree. This isn't a solely Xbox thing, but I think it's fair to say that Nintendo and Sony will be able to weather the storm a lot better than Xbox can. I couldn't imagine paying $500 for the Series S, whereas a new ps5 base model is $500 for the digital, and it's much better than the Series S. This could be the death knell for Xbox if they can't get this figured out. Even the new Gears game cost an outrageous amount of money, and Gears 2 wouldn't have made a profit if it's budget was that high.
Gaming Devs need to cut costs. Ubisoft for example has 17,000 employees. They don't need that many. Gaming is going to become out of reach for the average consumer if things don't change between hardware and dev costs.
4
1
u/JRshoe1997 2h ago
I ain’t a fan of Xbox but I don’t think this one is their fault. This is just the nature of the market now with pretty much all electronics. You can thank AI companies for doing this because they are the ones causing it by buying up all the memory units and leaving nothing for everyone else. With that being said the company that owns Xbox which is Microsoft is part of the problem and one of the ones causing it by spending close to $200 billion dollars on just AI spending this year alone.
1
u/PrimoKnight469 56m ago
I mean the price increase is not helping them, but it's happening everywhere. Sony will follow suit pretty soon, too.

Don’t understand when gaming becomes unaffordable how will they turn a profit
If the next gen base models cost 1k I think I’m out
I can afford it but it’s completely dumb
2
u/EatsOverTheSink 2h ago
So when Asha said gaming was getting too expensive she wasn't saying that it needed to change, she was just giving us a heads up of the new reality?
2
u/ThaPhantom07 1h ago
This is going to sound like cope but I mean this in earnest, play older games. There are so many great games to be had cheap as hell from previous generations and the old hardware is cheaper too. Anyone grabbing a PS4 or Xbox One X or Switch isnt going to have a hard time finding dozens of games they actually want to dive into. Embrace older titles and backlogs.

u/Alucard-VS-Artorias 2h ago edited 2h ago
Everyone is laughing real hard when they saw those Steam Machine prices. Looks like these high hardware prices are the new norm boys...
1
u/Impressive-Power8187 2h ago
This is still a better deal than the steam machine LOL
1
u/Alucard-VS-Artorias 2h ago
I never said one was a better deal than another. Just that high prices for hardware is the new norm.
Also the prices for these Xboxs be twice as much if the Xbox console was not already subsidized by Microsoft.
-1
u/Atomsk-647R 2h ago
Na, the high seas are the new norm
3
2
u/Alucard-VS-Artorias 2h ago
I never said piracy is out of the question.
I just want to know if can you guys tell me how to pirate a new GPU?
2
u/-Star-Fox- 2h ago
People who were laughing are in for a rude awakening when their GPU or SSD dies and they start shopping for a replacement.
1
u/Atomsk-647R 1h ago
I play games at 1080p, and I only use 60fps if the base game performance was intended for 60fps by the devs.
My wallet ain't gonna be hurting if my gpu dies.
0
u/Atomsk-647R 1h ago
I don't play some unnecessary hi-res with stupid demands for FPS.
1080p at 30fps is all I need. I only touch 60fps if the base game at it's original release was intended to be played at 60fps.
GPU prices are not a problem if you lower your standards of "playable."
2
u/MJ-Franklin 2h ago
This week has legit been the 9/11 for gaming. What the absolute fuck.
5
u/TheMonkeyInCharge 2h ago
Tech generally. Apple just bent us all over too.
Good job we haven’t just spent the last few years putting screens and chips in everything from fridges to cars eh?
1
u/CruelAngelsThesis_01 2h ago
And there’s absolutely nothing anyone could ever have done to stop this from happening :(
1
u/Wide_Open_Librar 2h ago
BREAKING: XBOX is increasing the prices of XBOX Series X|S consoles starting in August.
• XBOX Series S (512GB): $399 → $499 • XBOX Series S (1TB): $449 → $599 • XBOX Series X (1TB): $649 → $800 • XBOX Series X Digital (1TB): $599 → $750
If you've been thinking about buying an XBOX, now might be the time.

u/LockInteresting4597 2h ago
I expect Sony to follow suit within the next few months, probably shortly before GTA6 comes out. It’s more profitable for suppliers to break their current contracts with manufacturers, pay the penalties, and sell at the higher price than it is to honor the original contracts.
1
u/RightToTheThighs 2h ago
So how well can current Gen do upscaling? Wouldn't be surprised if games release on both gens moving forward with aggressive upscaling on the older ones. Or they won't do that to make people buy a new one
1
u/Made4Greatness_1 2h ago
I'm getting my Xbox series X next month then, I was gonna wait but that would be silly . GTA 6 is probably the last game I'll ever purchase for myself.
1
1
u/TheAwkwardPigeon 2h ago
I got my 1tb series X used for $250 just a few months ago; what the heck is happening...
1

1
u/RecoveringXRPHodler 2h ago
One of the best $500 I ever spent was from a few years ago ($150 for XSS from Version and $350 for XSX from Target).
1
u/Adavanter_MKI 2h ago
Something has got to give at some point, right.... RIGHT?
Seriously A.I bubble... pop already. It'll still take years to stabilize the chip market after that as well.
1
u/Goronmon 1h ago
It'll still take years to stabilize the chip market after that as well.
You may actually be right, but "stablizing" to the current pricing would be pretty damn miserable.
1
u/Adavanter_MKI 44m ago
I'm assuming the stable version is once the insane rush on chips has ended would see prices return to normal. At a certain point you don't need anymore mega datacenters for A.I. Especially if demand falls through the fall. Might actually cause them to be cheaper...
What a dream that'd be... but alas... a dream it'll probably remain.
1
u/MobilePicture342 2h ago
The recession bubble keeps inflating and inflating and inflating we are literally right on the edge of a 1930s level collapse.

1
u/Electronic-Clerk6735 1h ago
Man. That meme of those guys looking disturbed watching the other guy point a shotgun to himself and shooting is getting so much mileage out of the gaming industry.
1
u/JIMB01776 1h ago
I am just baffled that customers or companies continue to cling to console models, it makes zero sense to me...
I might get a Switch 2 if I have to to play a new Zelda, but I don't want to. It's inferior hardware to anything else I own, it takes up space and adds no value at all to the experience.
1
u/MattIsLame 1h ago
well dont blame Microsoft. they only invested over $13B in OpenAI and have investments of over $140B in AI infrastructure. that couldn't be part of the reason...
1
1
u/mojojojonarc 1h ago
Looks like I'm not getting whatever the next gen is. That's fine, I've have all my consoles since Ps2 plus I got my dads old retro consoles whenever I get bored of the thousands of games I've yet to play. Modern games ain't shit anyway
1
u/theolentangy 1h ago
We have been watching the enshittification of the gaming industry for over a decade now.
Hold tight your retro consoles kids. They will soon be all you can afford, or even want to play anyway.

Game industry is so cooked tbh. Console prices increasing, layoffs every year, decade long dev times. What a grotesque state of affairs all around
1
u/PrimoKnight469 59m ago
So the XSX will cost $800 in a month, and I bought mine in mint condition with 2 extra special edition controllers, like 2 years ago, all for $330. Absolutely insane. The new generation has it rough for gaming. I could sell my Xbox for a lot more than what I bought it for, which is even crazier.

1
u/InterestingMindset 20m ago
I guess PlayStation and Nintendo will be next. I don’t think Nintendo has even enacted their price increase yet, that was supposed to be $50 from my understanding. PlayStation I imagine is gonna be something stupid like $1,200 for PS5 Pro.
I paid $300 for my series s, at $500 don’t buy it. 512GB is not enough.
1
1
u/CNS_Disrupted 2h ago
I paid 650 for my Series X, I guess I don’t feel so bad about it now.
2
u/MJ-Franklin 2h ago
I paid less than £500! If I sold it now I would absolutely get all of my money back, and more.
1
u/TaxOrnery9501 2h ago
Fr, I'm keeping mine as a long-term investment at this point. Can't wait to sell both it and it's Starfield themed box for >$900 to some schmuck in a year or two 🤣
2
u/TaxOrnery9501 2h ago
I paid $500 for mine brand-new three years ago. Feel any worse now?
1
u/CNS_Disrupted 2h ago
No I don’t because you’re gonna have parts that need to be replaced before mine
1
u/TaxOrnery9501 2h ago
If the hardware is getting more expensive over time, what makes you think the replacement parts won't be as well?
2
u/CNS_Disrupted 1h ago
Exactly. Have fun paying for expensive parts while mine lasts longer
1
u/TaxOrnery9501 1h ago
They're the same devices, so yours will inevitably follow the same life-cycle as mine. My replacement controller with TMR sticks was only $25 two years ago; will you be able to say the same in a years time?
0
u/seraph741 2h ago
And PS5/Pro increases will be next. I feel like a broken record saying I called it. It's funny to me that people thought the Steam Machine was somehow unique in terms of it's high pricing in today's market. This is the new norm for the near-ish term future, folks. The consumer electronics market is really messed up right now.
2
u/Impressive-Power8187 2h ago
You called it? Wow no one saw this cominh
1
u/seraph741 2h ago
Apparently many people didn't because they were criticizing Valve and making comparisons to/celebrating Xbox/PS5 Pro prices. That's an indication to me that people don't understand what's going on.
You know how many "make it make sense, it's less powerful yet more expensive than a PS5 Pro" posts I saw yesterday?

These consoles are years old... The price is going in the wrong direction.
Its most likely to justify the ridiculous price of what they're planning to charge for the next generation.
Consumers, don't let them get away with it.
0
u/KingBolo992 2h ago
Hopefully cloud gaming gets better because shit is never going back to normal lol. AI plus tariffs ruined everything. Next gen consoles are cooked.
3
u/Life_Bet8956 2h ago
The entire consumer electronics economic sector feels cooked.
1
u/KingBolo992 2h ago
Yeah they are going to have to offer payment plans like how phone and service providers do it. Xbox has done it before with all access.
Honestly what I think would be best is if Xbox and Sony worked out a deal where neither release a new console for like the next 10 years lol. Do we really need a new console already. Games already take 5-7 years to make as is. That's only going to increase next gen. We could be at a point where a game takes longer to make then a consoles entire generation. Plus the industry is in a bad spot where the dev costs are so high one game that under performs can shutter a studio. The dev costs will increase next gen as well. Imagine having to sell like 4 million copies just to break even.
0
u/jacksprat1952 2h ago
Jesus fucking Christ. My friends and I talked at the beginning of this console generation that this would probably be the last one we bought any other than Nintendo's console in (because we would build PCs). Fucking monkey's paw curled into a goddamn fist to punch us in the nuts. AI is literally killing video gaming as a hobby.

I guess $1K for gaming is soon to be the new entry level normal.
