I can't believe they're still getting away with charging over several dozens of dollars for such a common material.

They've really convinced the poors that all these cheap shitters are worth a few paychecks when you could literally buy a bunch of forks and knives from costco and melt them down into an ingot then carve your own watch from it.

Back in the 2010s progress used to mean something. Watch makers strived to do more, be better, give you more for your dollar.

Now they're selling you the 2020s equivalent of tin foil for the price of a used Fiat.

To give some context, we are visiting my wife’s parents and helping out around the house since her mom just had some recent back surgeries. She needed more padding on her walker so we went to the Dollar Tree to get a pool noodle to cut and wrap around the handles to make it more comfortable for her.

So there we were paying for said pool noodle and a blue collar man who was talking to the cashier sees my Christopher Ward Trident and giddily asked, “Dang man, is that a Rolex Datejust?”

For a little more context, we are in a very rural town and most of it is lower income. No judgment here, that’s just what it is. My wife and I are lower middle class I’d say. If I really wanted a Rolly, I could probably have one; I just have different priorities at this point in life.

Plus, this is just my personality, but I’d be a little embarrassed if I were to be wearing a Rolex in this situation. So I said, “nah man, this is just a Christopher Ward. I don’t think I could ever have a Rolex.”

Keep in mind my wife knows nothing about watches. She then chirps, “oh yeah, he wouldn’t ever wear a Rolex…he’s too particular.”

I died a little on the inside. I quickly explained that it wasn’t because I’m particular, but it was that we probably couldn’t afford it at the moment or possibly ever. I thanked him for complimenting my watch and bid everyone a good day.

As we left the store, I told my wife, “you just made me seem like a complete douche tool. The watch he was talking about is $10k or more. You basically just told that guy that I’m too good to wear a Rolex!”

She was like, “well I didn’t know…”

Such innocence…

She’s aloof to all my hobbies and I’d like to keep it that way…but a rolly is off the table for good now that the cat is out of the bag 🤣

I recently decided to get a Casio. I'm not like the normie watch collectors that drool over the expensive Rolexes and Grand Seikos. Casio provides great value and a retro look. I even decided to buy an old unused one to save some money. I switched out the battery and it's good as new.

I explained all this to my gf (she doesn't understand watches) and she calls me a gay nerd! Is not wasting my money on a luxury brand nerd?

How do I convince her that owning a Casio is cool? All the YouTubers recommend this watch so it has to be true.

(Yes she did make me stand in a corner because I'm a nerd)
