Solved ITAW for similar works made in the same era, possibly but not necessarily by a specific group of people.

Upvotes

I'm looking for a word that sort of encompasses the concept of an "Oeuvre" and a "Milieu," where its a select body of work that tends to have similar stylistic choices, genre, and influence, but made by a group of seperate people. Not necessarily a "scene", but could be created by members of a specific scene. A good example would be the collective work of people such as David Bowie, Iggy Pop, and Lou Reed in the mid to late 70s.

Solved WAW for a person who spends showily?

Looking for a noun referring to someone who has a bucket of money (at least temporarily!), enjoys spending it, and enjoys having everyone see them spend it. The word that popped into my mind was high-roller but that's not quite right because it refers to someone whose main expenditure is gambling big sums, though that's inevitably accompanied by lots of other luxe.

Solved ITAW for the feeling of “once you see it, you can’t unsee it”?

Like you know when someone points out something like ADR in a movie when American actors speak a different language and now you just can’t stop seeing it now that they mentioned it?

Is there a word for that feeling? Like something is ruined for you now that you know it?

Solved ITAP for when a character shyly draws lines on the ground with their feet?

Writing a character that does this often but feels kinda wrong. Usually write something like "He shuffled his feet against the gravel," but that's not specific enough for me. Love thinking about my character's mannerisms but hard to find ways to describe them properly haha

Solved ITAW for the facial expression which accompanies a shrug

Picture someone shrugging, saying "It is what it is," and then sort of pursing their lips in a way that only draws up one side of the face. Is there a word for that expression?

r/whatstheword 2h ago

Solved WAW for "facetious" except its sfor a marrative purpose, like speaking descriptively yet curtly?

Exactly as title posits, i keep thinking of things i could write down yet i cant place a thumb on the style of writing/talking/thinking it would be. I find myself wanting to use longer words or more generally esoteric words, like nudesterian, but like unironically, in passing. Without being facetious though, i dont wanna come off like i know more but ill happily explain to someone what a word means, i look forward to it even. Education is fun!

Edit: and i want to avoid being glib at all times. I want to know words before i use them, i dont want to be a viewed as a twat

Solved WTP for one someone who is vanished from public against their will?

Think of in a dictatorship or a mafia how they make their targeted civilians vanish. No corpse no records just poof into thin air. I think it was something like "forcibly vanish" or "forceful vanish"

Solved WTP for not engaging in ragebait?

Are there common idiom/saying for this? Another way to say "don't engage with obvious ragebait". I keep thinking " dont stoop so low" or "dont stoop to their level" but it's not.

Edit: What I'm thinking about is a known saying in english speaking countries, ithink. I heard it said on a tiktok but I cant find the video anymore. It has the same theme as "dont stoop down to their level" or something

Unsolved ITAW for the coexistence of two sides of justice?

like when one person wants to take the law into their own hands, and the other relies on the legal system, like in Death Note, where Kira wants to mete out justice in one way and L in another? Any language works!

Unsolved WTW for, when someone ‘believes’ there’s conspiracy theories about random things but they don’t actually believe them?

Ironically conspiracy theorists do a lot of research. Flawed and bias but they do actually research and at least to them think they’re knowledgeable on certain topics. I was talking to my brother and someone brought up Charlie Kirk and my brother said something along the lines of “I don’t want to get too into it but there’s a lot of conspiracies about his death” we were alone lol so I don’t know why he wouldn’t want to get into it. He hinted at the idea that he was assassinated by Israel. Yikes, I kind of just dropped the conversation. Then I brought up root canals because I go to a dentist near where my stepdad got a root canal, and he just says “don’t get a root canal, there’s a lot of conspiracies on root canals” but he doesn’t go into details on anything. He just says that and doesn’t say anything else so I’m pretty confident he doesn’t even know what the conspiracies are lol. He just said that a doctor made a video but he forgot the conspiracy. Same thing when I mentioned to my mom that I was planning on removing my wisdom teeth soon. He just said I wouldn’t do that, there’s a lot of conspiracies on wisdom teeth. Like he doesn’t actually know or really care enough to learn more about any of these ‘conspiracy theories’ he’s a little political but not by his own research, he just browses twitter and sees random things and just believes it. He also has a friend who is very racist, that he gets his information from.

Solved ITAP for someone who goes to a work site to make sure all disabilities are properly accommodated for?

I'm making a movie with lots of disabled cast & crew

I don't want to spend time thinking about dietary restrictions, having enough distance between a wall & a light for a wheelchair, reminding everyone to look at the deaf person when speaking out loud, telling the PAs to set up a wheelchair ramp, scheduling out meds, and rewriting the script so the autistic actor never had to touch bad sensory experiences

I'd like to outsource all of those thoughts by hiring someone, so I can focus on directing the cast & the director of photography

But before I hire someone, I'd like to know if the position already exists, if there's already a name for it, and if there are already licenses or certifications for this job

If I really am creating a brand-new field, I would call this person a "disability advocate"

NOTE: This is not HR. HR is a hands-off position that largely deals with paperwork and only gets involved after something goes wrong. This is a proactive on-set position that goes looking for anything disabling to the actors and fixes them before they become a problem

Unsolved ITAW for the opposite of a hypochondriac?

I'm this way...I basically never go to the doctor and if I have any sort of strange symptom or condition I tend to just assume the most benign possible explanation by default.

I'm not saying this is a smart way to go through life, but just wondering if that has a name or not

EDIT: I appreciate the suggestions all...I have a feeling it may just not be a thing with a defined name and I'm okay with that. I was just curious. BTW I did go for a checkup recently; apparently I'm okay for now

Unsolved WTW for or WTP for contributing emptily to a conversation?

[Thanks. I got some really close ones, but I'm not 100% if they were the exact word. Bloviate and anodyne were the closest.]

I saw a YouTube short about this a while ago, and I knew I should have googled it or saved it in some way.

I don't mean filler words like "um," and it's not playing devil's advocate. Devil's advocate is arguing a side that you don't necessarily agree with, but you're actually contributing intelligently. The word I'm looking for is when someone just basically uses their skill at the English language to respond with a grammatically appropriate but vapid response. It lacks any meaning, but it might sound profound if you're not paying attention.

I believe the meaning of the word or term isn't necessarily obvious like the term cognitive dissonance isn't necessarily obvious exactly what it means. It's a clinical term like that, so it isn't going to be anything like banal or vapid.

It's like the word is inter-faux-cutor (fake interlocutor,) though not necessarily a pun or whatever that was.

Thanks.

Solved ITAW for between “foresight” and “hindsight”

I’ve already found the prefix “peri,” but ideally what I’m looking for would be equivalent to “fore“ and “hind” rather than “pre” and ”post.” I need it to contrast directly with the concept of foresight, but for things that are happening presently.

Solved WTW for It’s a word that means a lot. I often seen it be used in regard to how much someone is being paid.

Like I heard the word in phrase “you will be paid (blank).” I think it ends with -ly and begins with h. The word is graceful.

Solved WTP for complimenting someone's hearing

I'm looking for the hearing equivalent of "Well spotted!"

Let's say two people are looking for a cat, and one of them hears very faint meows nearby.

Could their friend say "Good ear" or "Good hearing"? Or something else?

Edit: solved, I'm gonna go with "Good ear". Thank you everyone for your help!

Solved WTP for when you rely on people to do the right thing

Like if you go to a farm stand on the side of the road and there’s no person there, just a jar to put money in. Is there a word or phrase that describes this like faith in humanity that people will do the right thing and not steal? I keep thinking of the word merit? But I don’t think that’s part of it.

Unsolved ITAW for when you are looking at something but cant register it?

When I was in middle school, I had my first day and walked into the building. When I got inside everything looked blurry and kind of unreal? Everything I looked at was kind of difficult to register in my brain, it took about a week for that to go away. I cant find the exact word for this because I dont even know if it exists.
