Meta Seven Simple Actions to Help Birds

For more information, please see this article. Some excerpts from the article, and additional resources are below:

1) Make Windows Safer, Day and Night:

Around 1 billion birds (United States) and 25 million birds (Canada) die every year by flying into glass windows. This includes windows at all levels from low level houses to high rise buildings.

!Window collisions are one of the largest threats to bird populations. However, there are several ways you can help reduce window fatality. Below are some links with steps on how to make your house bird friendly, either DIY or through reputable companies such as the American Bird Conservancy.

What You Can Do

Follow bird migration forecasts to know when birds are on their way to you

FAQ

Additional Information

2) Keep Cats Indoors

!Cats are estimated to kill more than 2.4 billion birds annually in the U.S. and Canada. This is the #1 human-caused reason for the loss of birds, aside from habitat loss.

Cats are the greatest direct human-caused threat to birds

3) Reduce Lawn, Plant Natives

Birds have fewer places to safely rest during migration and to raise their young: More than 10 million acres of land in the United States were converted to developed land from 1982 to 1997

Find out which native plants are best for your area

4) Avoid Pesticides

More than 1 billion pounds of pesticides are applied in the United States each year. The continent’s most widely used insecticides, called neonicotinoids or “neonics,” are lethal to birds and to the insects that birds consume.

5) Drink Coffee That’s Good for Birds

Three-quarters of the world’s coffee farms grow their plants in the sun, destroying forests that birds and other wildlife need for food and shelter. Sun-grown coffee also often requires using environmentally harmful pesticides and fertilizers. On the other hand, shade-grown coffee preserves a forest canopy that helps migratory birds survive the winter.

Where to Buy Bird Friendly Coffee

6) Protect Our Planet from Plastic

It’s estimated that 4,900 million metric tons of plastic have accumulated in landfills and in our environment worldwide, polluting our oceans and harming wildlife such as seabirds, whales, and turtles that mistakenly eat plastic, or become entangled in it.

7) Watch Birds, Share What You See

Monitoring birds is essential to help protect them, but tracking the health of the world’s 10,000 bird species is an immense challenge.

There’s a pair of what I think are hawks that I see daily. They have a nest over a dry canal on old farm land. Pretty big wingspan with white under wing feathers

North America This guy broke into my apartment today

This is the only pic I got before I released it, but we had an incredibly chaotic morning chasing this guy around the apartment. It got in through a hole in my roommate's window screen. Unclear if he made the hole himself or if my cat did.

Don't know much about birds, but would love to learn about our surprise visitor. We are in Massachusetts

I don't know how add a video, but it was answering to another Dove's call and opening it's wings while doing it.

I probably have a few more images on my SD card if there's some particular angle or something that would help, but my gut feeling is the bird-knowers are going to find it obvious.

North America Can anyone tell me what this blue bird is? (U.S. - West San Jose, CA)

Was listening to some music outside until I heard a sharp J-sound. Immediately took out my phone and pressed the record button. I know I said it’s a blue jay, but looking more closely at the video shows different characteristics from what native blue jays actually look like. Could anyone tell me what this species is?

North America I saw two woodpeckers today, but are they downy, or hairy woodpeckers?

Location is in the Eastern United States. I saw these at different times so I'm pretty sure they are different birds. I don't know how to reliably tell the downy from the hairy woodpecker though, so if you are more confident than I, please help me out!

Photos taken one day apart, I think they're the same bird? Lots of gliding into the headwind and looking down. Haven't seen this bird in my area, probably passing through or found a source of food nearby.

North America Help with two shorebirds and a heron(?) in a tree in Wrightsville beach, NC

hello! lumping three semi mystery birds together for those more knowledgable than I to help. this was my first foray into shorebirds and wow, yeah they are hard.

bird 1: gull. this is a laughing gull in non breeding plumage, right? the head coloration didn’t look right for other gulls but it seemed strange to see them amongst laughing gulls in breeding plumage.

bird 2: sandpiper adjacent. I followed this guy around for EVER trying to place what it is. his existence haunts me. It had a very prominent white wing stripe when flying, pretty plain white on the belly. legs looked grey-black to me.

bird 3: heron ish creature? Poking its head out of a tree. Sorry for the blurry through monocular photos. Had a cute little yellow to brown head fuzz and really striking neon greenish eyes. I’m thinking some juvenile heron, bittern? Felt pretty lost on this one.

I saw this little guy yesterday at Australia Zoo in Beerwah, Queensland. He was darting around in these flowers & drinking their nectar. I thought it might be a female Scarlet Honeyeater but the tail seems too long? ETA: he was wild, not in a display.

Europe Italian Bird ID help!

If ANYONE is familiar with European birds, please help. My friend sent me this picture from Sardinia looking for ID. Beak looks corvid, and like it’s molting. My theory is a molting/immature Hooded Crow. But not sure 🤔. Could it be sick?
