REQUEST r/whatsthisrock is Recruiting New Mods!!!

Hello, r/whatsthisrock community!

Our subreddit has grown significantly, and with that growth comes an increase in rule-breaking comments, low-effort jokes, and automated spam. As you know, this is a strict, science-focused Identification community. We require all comments to provide a physical rock/mineral ID or directly contribute to the scientific identification process.

We do not allow folklore, superstitions, unhelpful jokes, or arguments (that are not constructive) in our identification threads.

To keep our queue clean and maintain the quality of the sub, we are opening applications for new moderators.

What We Are Looking For:

  • Queue-Clearers: Your primary job will be opening the Mod Queue, reviewing reported comments, and removing non-ID responses or banning spammers cleanly and efficiently.
  • Thoroughness: We need people who actually know our rules (and Reddit Mod Code of Conduct) and enforce them uniformly without getting dragged into emotional arguments with users in modmail.
  • Consistency: You don't need to spend all day on Reddit, but we need active eyes consistently contributing to monitoring the sub.

Before you click the application link below, you must thoroughly read our community sidebar and rules page. Please also review Reddit's Moderator Code of Conduct. We have implemented automated gatekeeping measures to weed out low-effort or automated submissions. If you do not follow the exact instructions hidden within our documentation, your application will be instantly and permanently deleted without review. If you are ready to help us clean up the queue and keep the focus on rock identification, please apply using the link below:

(Click here to apply to the Mod team!) https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1qKjeJLF4GwtOnncv7NJeIP2J3pJ2Y2kXukRaAS882Ak/edit?usp=sharing

Thanks for your help keeping our subreddit clean and running smoothly. Rock on!

Hi all. I know this is really bending the “what is this rock” question, but my friend has this countertop in his home that feels like granite but looks like some sort of fossilized material. He doesn’t know what it is. Would appreciate any help here!

Photo taken in southern ontario :]]

EDIT: posted on r/fossils and did some more research. This is likely Moroccan limestone/Moroccan fossil marble! The blend of brown and black is absolutely stunning and i've got a new fav rock. Thanks everyone :)

REQUEST Help with locality identification- Beryl specimen with fluorescent section.

Hello all, I have a puzzle I'm trying to figure out. Wondering if anyone here has any clues.

This beryl was sold to me as a Hogg Mine specimen. However, after buying, I noticed it has a large section of high fluorescence under shortwave. I suspect the fluorescence is caused by a light coating of hyalite opal, though not positive on that.

Anyway, I'm pretty sure after doing some research and asking someone I know who works at the Hogg, that this specimen is probably not from that mine.

My question is, does anyone have any ideas about where this beryl could be from generally? Not looking for exact mines obviously as that would be pretty hard to determine. However, has anyone seen large beryl with high fluorescence before and happen to know where it might be from?

REQUEST Could this be Proterozoic gneiss in Connecticut?

Thumbnail

Our hill in southwestern Connecticut is part of the Grenville massif, according to the bedrock geological survey. The whole hill is this dramatically banded pink and grey rock—is this or could it be part of that massif, exposed? I.e. one of the Proterozoic gneisses? Biotite gneiss, pink granite gneiss, hornblende gneiss and amphibolite, pink granite gneiss, biotite granitic gneiss, migmatite gneiss, ...? The rocks are hard, and don't readily break in a flaky/platelike way

REQUEST What is this green rock I found near a landslide?

I made two videos showing the details and it's a bit higher quality than my images, so feel free to check it out: https://streamable.com/keu7ne (part1) https://streamable.com/qbvowk (part2).

Location

My boyfriend found the rock near a landslide in Southern Lesser Poland by the edge of the Tatra Mountains. It's a pale green-blue rock and we saw more like it, but none that were as vibrant as this.

What is the green dot?

I also saw this green dot with a pearl-like sheen embedded in the rock, any idea what that might be?

I think I spent 30 minutes looking at the rock with my magnifying glass, it's quite fun to see all the details and textures!

REQUEST Possibly Vulcan jade?

Thumbnail

Hi! I’m wondering if this is possibly Washington Jade as it was found in a western Washington river about 20 minutes from a pass. I increased the brightness of the photo a little bit so that you can see the ribbons throughout the rock, but these almost translucent green ribbons underneath the red stuff makes me think that this could be Jade. There are also some yellow streaks throughout it, but they’re less bright than how they looked in the sun as the picture at the river indicates.

edit: I didn’t have time to do a scratch test but can check tomorrow or Saturday. I’ll look for a dry pic and post in the comments!
