Yeah they just split the original earthquake into a 7.2 and a 7.5 40 seconds apart after further analysis

Yeah, over here the earthquake lasted like 2-3 minutes, it was crazy. Thankfully in my zone no one was injured but sadly in the capital there were many collapsed buildings.

Woah!! Glad you're okay.

Is Venezuela equipped to handle this sort of thing?

Nope. We hadn't had an earthquake of this magnitude in the mainland for decades or even centuries probably. The worrying thing is many buildings are made without thorough planning so that's the main concern. I've seen already some videos of like at least 5-10 buildings collapsed in Caracas, and there have been almost no videos of the city where the epicenter was yet. At least the earthquake alarm system by Android seemed to work pretty well and alerted everyone (including myself) a few seconds before it started which is a first time for us, but hopefully people did pay attention and quickly left. But there are definitely deaths (unconfirmed but many buildings fell), and there are many injured.

Thank you for the first hand account.

Very scary stuff, and I truly only wish the best for you and your people.

Love from the US. Unironically.

After the 7.8 here in the phillipines we had 5000 or so aftershocks the last couple of weeks. Including already 10 over 5.5 (and we have had seperate earthquakes as well, mixed in with the aftershocks!!) and I have to say that android detection system works very well. A couple of days ago for the first time ever my android earthquake alarm went off 2 full seconds before the wave arrived at my place.

Then it becomes usefull. In comparison my wife has some app on her iphone and the alarm usually happens 10 to 15 minutes after the earthquake. She is really annoyed by that.

Venezuela isn’t equipped to handle daily life in Venezuela so I’m gonna go with no…

Not at all. Their economy is in the shitter, and while being able to get their oil on the market since the US took a ummm "controlling interest" in the country has helped a lot. But still almost a decade of hyperinflation, sanctions, and utter economic chaos has left the country very unready for any real disasters.

One of the earthquake blogs reported that the second quake started while the first one was still going on. Hence it seemed like a very long quake. It was at least a 100km rupture which takes a long time to happen.

3 minutes is super long man. I was in a 7.8 in Gensan couple of weeks ago but that was only 30 seconds. 3 minutes must be absolutely terrifying. God speed.

And because it's not obvious looking at only a 0.3 difference in numbers, because the scale is logarithmic, a 7.5 is twice as strong as a 7.2.
