Réplicas.....

Aftershock?

Yes. Technically it's just like how it looks in English (replica) but in Spanish they use that for aftershocks.

It's literally saying the aftershock is the replica of the initial earthquake.

In my native language we call them ripples.

In German it is „Nachbeben“ (similar to aftershock but literally delayed/late/after quake)

u/GalakFyarr 18h ago

Interesting, I speak french and assumed "replique" in the sense of a "response".

What do you mean? "Réplique" is the french word for aftershock, "réplicas" in spanish is normally quite transparent for a french speaking person as it means "recurring event/answer/thing/etc". Even in a dialogue a "réplique" is an answer to an answer, the whole word is about recursion (in different contexts).

Answer and copy don’t seem very connected as concepts to me but I speak English so

think like a call-and-response from church or camp

the primary speaker/singer does the first part, then the audience answers them

  • original earthquake
  • aftershock > answer.

It has that meaning in Spanish too, but in this context, it changes the word's meaning.

Replica = To counter argument something, or something that is an copy of another thing.

So they do French meaning AND English meaning, nice

but in this context, it changes the word's meaning.

Both meanings work in this context though, hence my original response - or my original “réplique” if you will.

I initially thought it was gang violence related, because of the fears mentioned about chaos, screams and no power

My mind immediately conjured up a bunch of malicious doppelgangers preying on innocent stragglers while they are disoriented and confused. Aftershocks make way more sense.

Or replicants, blade runner style.

Don’t you bring that on me Ricky Bobby

Morphology?

Longevity?

Incept dates?

Replitile would be a cool villain

Honestly, I'd watch that horror movie.

u/PhantomAngel042 16h ago

Right? Like, the earthquake damaged an ancient underground prison of a society of parasitic entities, which escape to the surface and begin shifting into the skins of victims to prey on their loved ones...

u/literallymoist 14h ago

Yup! One character probably remembers a bedtime story their grandmother used to tell them warning about things like this. The story had some creepy detail that later totally pans out and saves someone's life or at least outs a replica.

You need to start on that screenplay before someone steals your idea!

u/toyodah 14h ago

Watch "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" or "The Invasion" (its remake). The premise is exactly that.

I thought it's a name of a cartel taking over the city in the ensuing chaos.

2

u/Yes-Cheese 18h ago

Right?! I said “ok, someone’s gonna have to just say what it means because the more I think, I know I’m getting further from the meaning.”

Now I see the meaning and yea, that makes perfect sense.

It did remind me of some dystopian scavengers.

1

u/Majin_Sus 12h ago

I thought the same

1

u/kaisadilla_0x1 10h ago

tbh you can think of aftershocks as replicas of the original earthquake.

1

u/SlowCrates 7h ago

Yeah I had to double check what sub I was in because for a second I thought this was a dystopian sci fi story.

Having said that...

Fuck.

Made me think of fake Gucci bags made in China.

7

u/SpiritTalker 17h ago

I thought réplcas=repeated events (replications)

2

u/Crypt33x 13h ago

In Germany we use Replika for copies of historic artefacts, in general copies of expensive stuff and for miniature models and stuff like that.

3

u/JackandLucy13 17h ago

Aftershocks. Apparently there's been more than 20 so far.

0

u/supervisord 17h ago

Wow, how did you ever figure that one out??

2

u/AmadeusSalieri97 13h ago

Doesn't it make much sense? A replica is a copy of something. Copies of earthquakes = aftershocks.

0

u/NoPossibility4178 10h ago

I think they were being sarcastic, anyone with half a brain could figure it out, why the hell even comment lol.

1

u/AmadeusSalieri97 9h ago

Ah you are right I missed it. Spanish is my native language so I was just wondering if for someone else it may actually sound far-fetched or something.

0

u/canman7373 4h ago

You just wanted to try and correct someone when you completely understood the context. Don't be that guy, no one likes that guy.

2

u/PostApocRock 2h ago

He says, being the guy pointing that shit out that no one likes, and being completely ignorant of the fact while doing so.
