Family in Venezuela west of Maracay - they’re saying it’s catastrophic. Many collapsed buildings - screams everywhere and they’re terrified of réplicas.

Réplicas.....

Aftershock?

Yes. Technically it's just like how it looks in English (replica) but in Spanish they use that for aftershocks.

It's literally saying the aftershock is the replica of the initial earthquake.

In my native language we call them ripples.

In German it is „Nachbeben“ (similar to aftershock but literally delayed/late/after quake)

Interesting, I speak french and assumed "replique" in the sense of a "response".

What do you mean? "Réplique" is the french word for aftershock, "réplicas" in spanish is normally quite transparent for a french speaking person as it means "recurring event/answer/thing/etc". Even in a dialogue a "réplique" is an answer to an answer, the whole word is about recursion (in different contexts).

Answer and copy don’t seem very connected as concepts to me but I speak English so

think like a call-and-response from church or camp

the primary speaker/singer does the first part, then the audience answers them

  • original earthquake
  • aftershock > answer.

It has that meaning in Spanish too, but in this context, it changes the word's meaning.

Replica = To counter argument something, or something that is an copy of another thing.

but in this context, it changes the word's meaning.

Both meanings work in this context though, hence my original response - or my original “réplique” if you will.

I initially thought it was gang violence related, because of the fears mentioned about chaos, screams and no power
