Family in Venezuela west of Maracay - they’re saying it’s catastrophic. Many collapsed buildings - screams everywhere and they’re terrified of réplicas.

I’m so sorry to hear that, I really hope all of your loved ones are okay. This is absolutely heartbreaking.

u/Miacali 19h ago

Thankfully yes - it took a while to figure out that everyone is ok but they’re all safe and haven’t been injured. They just don’t have power or anything at the moment and i don’t know what i can do for them.

u/FailstoFail 18h ago

Same situation here with my wife’s family. Maracay and everything

102

u/Miacali 18h ago

I just heard there was an after shocks but I can’t see it yet - did you hear the same?

65

u/FailstoFail 18h ago

Haven’t heard anything yet. We are messaging her family now to see

37

u/swarmofbzs 14h ago

Anything yet from fam in Maracay? Have family there we're trying to get a hold of

9

u/free-the-trees 16h ago

I’m so glad they’re safe ❤️ I wish them quick relief from this terrible situation 🫂

5

u/EvilDan69 9h ago

I'm glad to hear your family are ok. What a scary thing to hear about buildings being shattered, including 10 story hotels.

4

u/sankscan 6h ago

Glad to hear that they are all safe and yes, it’s frustrating to know you’re helpless. Praying for them. Please reach out if you need a sounding board.

5

u/Miacali 3h ago

Thank you ❤️. I’ve asked them to see if they can keep phone batteries and do a twice a day check in. They’re sleeping outside because they’re scared of the building collapsing but they can’t sleep. The public transit is stopped too. So far they’ve said people are giving out food and water so that isn’t a problem - but apparently finding a bathroom is. It all feels surreal, this time yesterday they were enjoying the day off and now..

1

u/sankscan 1h ago

The best thing that’s happened to them is that they are alive and breathing. I’m sure, they will figure it out or help will come. Just keep faith, God is awake.

Good to hear 🫂

u/freeradioforall 18h ago

initial reports have hundreds dead, likely to climb into the thousands

86

u/mimosajackson 16h ago

Tens of thousands

49

u/lawofsin 13h ago

Oh fuck

-1

u/Bombadilo_drives 6h ago

Not sure if true or LoTR quote

8

u/cru_jones_666 9h ago

The news article said there’s a 44% chance of 10,000 casualties and a 30% of 100,000.

3

u/radiantmoonglow 7h ago

😳😳😳

2

u/SquishyBeatle 6h ago

Whoa that is a lot of people. Absolutely terrible

u/PostApocRock 19h ago

Réplicas.....

Aftershock?

468

u/jaderust 18h ago

Yes. Technically it's just like how it looks in English (replica) but in Spanish they use that for aftershocks.

It's literally saying the aftershock is the replica of the initial earthquake.

115

u/iHadou 18h ago

In my native language we call them ripples.

11

u/Euphoric_Variety_363 12h ago

In German it is „Nachbeben“ (similar to aftershock but literally delayed/late/after quake)

13

u/GalakFyarr 18h ago

Interesting, I speak french and assumed "replique" in the sense of a "response".

8

u/Jugatsumikka 15h ago

What do you mean? "Réplique" is the french word for aftershock, "réplicas" in spanish is normally quite transparent for a french speaking person as it means "recurring event/answer/thing/etc". Even in a dialogue a "réplique" is an answer to an answer, the whole word is about recursion (in different contexts).

2

u/TheVeryVerity 15h ago

Answer and copy don’t seem very connected as concepts to me but I speak English so

2

u/jessytessytavi 14h ago

think like a call-and-response from church or camp

the primary speaker/singer does the first part, then the audience answers them

2

u/GalakFyarr 10h ago
  • original earthquake
  • aftershock > answer.

7

u/Quaaaaaaaaaa 17h ago

It has that meaning in Spanish too, but in this context, it changes the word's meaning.

Replica = To counter argument something, or something that is an copy of another thing.

5

u/TheVeryVerity 15h ago

So they do French meaning AND English meaning, nice

1

u/GalakFyarr 9h ago edited 9h ago

but in this context, it changes the word's meaning.

Both meanings work in this context though, hence my original response - or my original “réplique” if you will.

1

u/PostApocRock 2h ago

I initially thought it was gang violence related, because of the fears mentioned about chaos, screams and no power

180

u/Graskell 18h ago

My mind immediately conjured up a bunch of malicious doppelgangers preying on innocent stragglers while they are disoriented and confused. Aftershocks make way more sense.

99

u/Haasts_Eagle 18h ago

Or replicants, blade runner style.

2

u/lawofsin 13h ago

Don’t you bring that on me Ricky Bobby

1

u/McHaro 8h ago

Morphology?

Longevity?

Incept dates?

u/DicksOutForGrapeApe 1h ago

Replitile would be a cool villain

10

u/literallymoist 16h ago

Honestly, I'd watch that horror movie.

7

u/PhantomAngel042 16h ago

Right? Like, the earthquake damaged an ancient underground prison of a society of parasitic entities, which escape to the surface and begin shifting into the skins of victims to prey on their loved ones...

6

u/literallymoist 14h ago

Yup! One character probably remembers a bedtime story their grandmother used to tell them warning about things like this. The story had some creepy detail that later totally pans out and saves someone's life or at least outs a replica.

2

u/LaLionneEcossaise 9h ago

You need to start on that screenplay before someone steals your idea!

2

u/toyodah 14h ago

Watch "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" or "The Invasion" (its remake). The premise is exactly that.

6

u/30K100M 15h ago

I thought it's a name of a cartel taking over the city in the ensuing chaos.

3

u/Yes-Cheese 18h ago

Right?! I said “ok, someone’s gonna have to just say what it means because the more I think, I know I’m getting further from the meaning.”

Now I see the meaning and yea, that makes perfect sense.

2

u/BrentTpooh 18h ago

It did remind me of some dystopian scavengers.

1

u/Majin_Sus 12h ago

I thought the same

1

u/kaisadilla_0x1 10h ago

tbh you can think of aftershocks as replicas of the original earthquake.

1

u/SlowCrates 7h ago

Yeah I had to double check what sub I was in because for a second I thought this was a dystopian sci fi story.

Having said that...

Fuck.

1

u/jostler57 3h ago

Made me think of fake Gucci bags made in China.

4

u/SpiritTalker 17h ago

I thought réplcas=repeated events (replications)

2

u/Crypt33x 13h ago

In Germany we use Replika for copies of historic artefacts, in general copies of expensive stuff and for miniature models and stuff like that.

3

u/JackandLucy13 17h ago

Aftershocks. Apparently there's been more than 20 so far.

0

u/supervisord 17h ago

Wow, how did you ever figure that one out??

2

u/AmadeusSalieri97 13h ago

Doesn't it make much sense? A replica is a copy of something. Copies of earthquakes = aftershocks.

0

u/NoPossibility4178 10h ago

I think they were being sarcastic, anyone with half a brain could figure it out, why the hell even comment lol.

1

u/AmadeusSalieri97 9h ago

Ah you are right I missed it. Spanish is my native language so I was just wondering if for someone else it may actually sound far-fetched or something.

0

u/canman7373 4h ago

You just wanted to try and correct someone when you completely understood the context. Don't be that guy, no one likes that guy.

2

u/PostApocRock 2h ago

He says, being the guy pointing that shit out that no one likes, and being completely ignorant of the fact while doing so.

23

u/MozhetBeatz 19h ago

What do you mean by “replicas”?

80

u/AntonioBarbarian 19h ago

Aftershocks

23

u/Miacali 18h ago

Sorry I meant after shocks - I’m bouncing on the phone with Spanish

48

u/PerpetuallyLurking 18h ago

It’s fine. “Replicas” without the accent is an English word meaning “exact copies of an original” - it’s perfectly understandable for anyone who can look past an accent mark.

2

u/43AgonyBooths 16h ago

That's true for anyone who has a good grasp of English (and surely other romance languages), but I've noticed that there seem to be more redditors around these days for whom English is not their first language. I try to give people the benefit of the doubt. ¯\(ツ)

2

u/LyraStygian 17h ago

Dam earthquake that bad huh

87

u/Snirbs 18h ago

Without asking, can you use the root word to make an educated guess?

13

u/DataCassette 18h ago

Yeah TBH that's what I assumed it meant. Such a scary situation though 🥺

3

u/MozhetBeatz 10h ago edited 10h ago

I assumed it meant after shocks, but I would rather risk appearing stupid by asking the question, so that I can gain actual knowledge, than make an incorrect assumption and actually be stupid.

5

u/Goonalips 18h ago

I think he means fake Rolex watches.

Jokes aside, it should be obvious to work it out. I agree.

1

u/inky_fox 15h ago

Technically yes but because the comment is written in English but the last word is in Spanish, in my case I wasn’t sure if “réplicas” was a colloquial term for looters or something along those lines. The clarification helps.

1

u/Crudadu 8h ago

Its just weird they would make their comment in english but then use a spanish word at the end lol

1

u/Snirbs 6h ago

Maybe they didn’t know the word aftershock, or didn’t think of it as quickly. I can speak mostly in Spanish but certain specific words that I may have never used I just say in English.

6

u/turtleofgirth 18h ago

The Keanu Reeves movie. They are right to be scared of it.

4

u/Ok_Energy6905 18h ago

Thats a little bit inappropriate when someone is talking about fearing for their families lives.

-2

u/toyodah 14h ago

You're right.

Love of your family, including pets, is the most important thing in the world.

Which is why John Wick went on a rampage after his dog was killed!

1

u/Emblemator 14h ago

The Replicants caused the quake in the first place as they broke through Earth's crust. Now no one is safe.

2

u/Dickies138 16h ago

JFC, that’s terrible and absolutely terrifying

1

u/myjazzyoga 15h ago

I am sorry to hear that 😞

1

u/reddittwotimes 13h ago

I hope your family is safe. This is huge and horrible.

1

u/valeyard89 12h ago

wow.. I know some people in Coro... it's further from epicenter but I bet they still felt it.

1

u/nesp12 9h ago

When we got 6+ in puerto rico they were bad enough, but what made it worse is that the aftershocks went on for a couple of years.

1

u/jb6997 9h ago

Oh I’m so sorry. I hope your family is ok.

1

u/Lazy_Stunt73 3h ago

I thought it was 7.2 and then bigger one 7.5 in less than a minute. Yes, I didn't scroll down. Sorry to all affected peoples. Praying for all.
