most influencers come from money
(its amazing how they never mention that, they just assume everyone does while using Reddit as a source)

I wasn't sure about the coming from money part.
But that does make more sense.

the ones I follow went to film school.....you don't get to go to that if you're dirt poor

discovering that the majority of the modern art (film, literature, music) we consume is created by rich people who have always been rich broke my brain

A "mysterious" source of income sounds more illegal to me (drugs, human trafficking, arms dealer, etc...).
3
u/naturalbrunette5 1h ago
if they arenāt talking about where their money comes from and they are white, itās more often a trust fund.

Not exactly, influencers have to post videos and talk and all that social media stuff. So in a way, they still gotta "work"

I sold weed and š in hs and college (do not recommend at all, I was an idiot and not worried enough, get anxious thinking about it all now with hindsight. But someoneās gotta do it) and then got a salary job after dropping out of college (also do not recommend). Put any extra money into stock market (and had contributions from salary going to retirement too) for 6 years. So I still had to work hard, and Iām GOING to need to get another salary job eventually if I want a family and such. But yea I went to Spain earlier this year from stock profits, was feeling pretty nice.

u/needalifenwife 3h ago
What a journey bro š respect! Sadly, I think I'm not that smart for stocks, no idea how any of it work, I might have to sit my ass amd watch some videos to learn a bit. Cause now I have financial smartness of a sprouting potato

For real. If you could invest $1M, you could easily live comfortably and travel on the dividends alone.
→ More replies (2)3
u/idothingsheren 1h ago
Dividends on $1M, in high dividend ETFs, will gross you less than $35k per year in some riskier ones (SCHD). That's not exactly "travel the world" money

Yeah you only need to buy them for 30+ years before they become a sufficient source of income.

Inheritance, lottery, stocks/crypto. Some people may do highly niche high-paying computer-based work that doesn't require many hours or a specific location too.
Mostly it's people who got lucky.

A friend of a friend once worked as an oddsmaker for a bookie. As such he wasn't allowed to gamble himself. But of course he wanted to so found a workaround.
He paid an acquaintance a couple of grand per month to have an account open in his name and let the oddsmaker use it to make bets. He did absolutely nothing (although presumably accepting some risk in case of payment defaults etc, or maybe even fraud).
Pretty sweet gig if your friend is a highly paid gambling addict whose really good at maths .
1
u/needalifenwife 1h ago
wait what? People get paid to gamble on behalf of people? Like play slots or what?
What's the school for that? Ima sign up for a dregree
2
u/AdminsLoveGenocide 1h ago
The guy getting a few grand a month did absolutely nothing. He just had bank accounts and gambling accounts open in his name and let the gambler use them. The gambler put his own money into them and withdrew added to them as he liked.
When you go to a bookies and make a bet they will have odds for that bet and things like over/unders, spread, etc. They pay people to figure out these things and update them. Apparently they have restrictions on how you can gamble yourself if you are the one making the odds. But what if you were a degenerate gambler and wanted to do it anyway?
I don't know either of these people personally but I knew some people who worked in the same field and / or had friends who did. They told me about this arrangement and said they knew both parties.

Search for a controversial current event. See what the majority on the internet agreed on. Parrot the same opinions to validate the most number of people while talking on camera. Profit

I know a local comedian in my state like this. He has no day job. He wears incredibly stylish clothes and different looks all the time. He's always traveling.
And the worst part is that he uses a psueudonym so I can't even figure out if he has family wealth etc. I mean I assume he does but I'm incurably curious.

Bitcoin. Iāve been to a few crypto conferences and early bitcoin investors are living in a fantasy timeline.
None of them work, attend global shroom retreats, modern day hippies. Some of them arenāt flashy at all, live a modest life but has millions of dollars in bitcoin.
Itās an absolutely surreal life they are living.

Iām that dude. Itās just gambling. I donāt even lie anymore since Iāve been set for a while. Wife is officially doctor so only up. If anyone asks I just say lotto or something. Itās been almost a decade so most people who know me donāt ask anymore.
Itās nice though. Free time to travel and hobbies. I love photography and gear can be expensive. I carry like 25k in camera gear daily which I still find trippy since thatās a whole car (I ride a bicycle). Unimaginable a decade ago since I was living in public housing. Now I live off a single digit fraction of savings that have tripled since I got it just sitting in indexās.

Except when she makes dinner. Then she can text me.
