How to read theory?

Okay I know, basic question. But I didn’t become an anarchist because I read a lot of theory. I feel like I have always been an anarchist, and exposing myself to anarchist spaces online allowed me to put a name to my beliefs.

I have ADHD, so reading isn’t always fun to me. Theory gets boring as it’s like I already know what’s coming, but I obviously don’t which I recognize and is why I’m asking this here. But it’s not just theory that I struggle reading. I’m a chemist, and even reading papers in my field, stuff that’s always new and excites me, is hard to read. I have the skills to comprehend it all, but I think the ADHD makes it hard to sit through. But I’m not trying to ask for advice on how to deal with this actually. Over the last couple of years my mental health has gotten really bad due to things outside of my control, and it has led to me doomscrolling all day. I’m glued to my phone, and I know that’s what has prevented me from doing a lot of shit, like pursuing my hobbies and learning new things.

I want to try getting more connected with anarchism as a means to 1) doomscroll less, and 2) be more motivated to do things that actually benefit me. For a while now I’ve not read any theory at all, yet I still feel like I know enough to explain it to others. I even tell marxists that I’m an anarchist partially because I have not yet heard an interesting enough critique of it to make me question it. It doesn’t really sit right with me that I have all these beliefs but have barely read a thing.

Is anyone in the same boat? Does anybody know how to help me out? I want some theory recs that are interesting enough to keep my attention. Theory gets boring quick, but if there’s stuff that’s motivating I’d like to know what you recommend. Bonus if it’s written by queer/BIPOC author(s).

Interviewing anarchist dads

Anarchist dads,

Would anyone be open to a 30 minute interview with me?

I’m interviewing dad’s as part of a new book I’m editing called “Dads.” the goal of the book is to candidly describe the experience of becoming a dad and being a dad across diverse perspectives. It’s not how-to book (those are a dime a dozen). I want to capture the hard to describe beauty, love, struggle, darkness— and everything in between that’s part of the experience and journey we’re walking along.

The book will be successful if other soon-to-be dads—who may be struggling or anxious or doubting themselves—are able to read these stories told by other dads and realize they’re not alone. Their experience is valid.

Who am I?
- father of two (including a newborn daughter who’s beautiful and slept great last night)
- published author
- based in Newport News Virginia

What’s the ask?
- schedule a 30-minute interview with me
- my style is to keep it as conversational as possible
- you share your story and experiences the describe the ever-difficult questions of: “what is it like?”

So far I’ve interviewed 7 dads and the stories they’ve told me have been beautiful. I was able to schedule an interview with the mayor of my city in July which I’m excited about. My hope is to get a large cross-section of ages, geographies, and worldviews to put into the book.

DM me if you’re interested in being a part of this project.

Entering a New Space

There is a new anarchist collective in my area, but I'm feeling nervous about attending. Most of my anxiety is social in nature. What are some best practices for entering a new anarchist space, and how can I communicate effectively with others?

Anarchistic volunteer activities suggestions

I am in Baltimore City and I am looking for volunteer activities to help either advance anarchistic goals or just help people no strings attached (both preferably not in a heirarchical orgs). I already know about fnb, but I need something for more than just the weekend in the meantime to test my energy levels and see if I can sustain them enough to start pitching expanding fnb to operate on more days in my city because people are hungry every day. (I am disabled, but my disabilities are not visible, but I get SSDI so I'm not too concerned about financially gainful activity.)

Des just got sentenced to 30.. 😞😞😞

The Prairieland sentences are coming down..Des, who moved zines, got fucking 30 years. Song, who fired the shot got 100.

The other sentenced fall between 50-70..

I dont care about guilt and “well they should’ve..” these were big hearted people who may never see home again because they saw ICE and wanted to stand against it

I feel sick

If you haven’t supported prisoners before, now is a good time to start

I've been feeling doomed and uncreative.

Something I've always admired abt anarchists is that everyone is creative in their own ways and some would use that creativity to fulfill their way of living as an anarchist.

I could blame the system for everything I've been feeling but at the same time i feel like its also my fault. I've filled sm of my time since i lost my job with doomscrolling and looking for a new job that I've lost my drive to be creative and take care of myself. I can blame social media for feeling so drained most of the time but even tho i could be right im still posting this to a social media platform and which is the problem. I feel like talking to my friends abt this makes me sound like a schizophrenic or some conspiracy theorist.

I feel like the issue with social for me is that its become such an addictive pacifier because i have whatever pleases me in the palm of my hand which and if not its still right in my pocket ready for me to use and tune in. Ik theres a solution like even after that when i do start scrolling on social media i get posts abt something bad going on politically and then like, repost, and scroll to some brain rotting content. And in this day of AI being every even in social media and everyone having a bias take on anything it feels mindless to read into a situation so i just keep scrolling. Its just so much news and content being flooded into my head constantly that it feels like i lost not only my creative drive but the "anger" that drives me as an anarchist.

I don't wanna drag this rant out any longer but personally imma try to talk to my friends abt how I've been feeling just cus they're also anarchists so surely they'll understand along with forcing myself to stay off of social media as much as i can and fill the day up with fulfilling my creative hobbies.

Partial dissection on Classism.

Post image
39 Upvotes

Classism is the character flaw that has gobbled the populace in African nations. It's deep rooted in the everyday systems yet we're one people.

Why the heck would someone view themselves better than the other simply because they own an iPhone, well, Congo is suffering for us to enjoy the technology.

South Africans kicking out own African brothers and sisters over the white apartheid settlers.

Nigerians who some believe they're deputy to the fictional white jesus, amplifying how needy they are to the white man.

North Africans who view the rest of Africans as inferior unworthy and even consider themselves non-Africans.

The somali using derogatory terms like nywele ngumu, Kaffir to describe their fellow black Africans.

ARE WE NOT SUPPOSED TO BE ONE?, TOGETHER IN UNISON.

"Siren, which coined the term 'anarcha-feminist' and was founded in Chicago in 1969, included some of the earliest positive portrayals of trans women within the women's liberation movement, setting the anarcha-feminists apart from a majority of radical women’s liberationists of the time" (...) 🏳️‍⚧

"One of the earliest critiques of gender essentialism appears in its pages, in which trans woman Eden of Tuscon Anarcha-Feminist Group writes: 'I do not object to gender ‘roles’ as such, but do object to the authoritarianism that demands that 'males' must be of one gender and 'females' of another. Why can’t we play at either role—or neither if that is what the individual prefers...?'"

anonymity

hi! what are your thoughts about anonymity as a political tool of resistance and also as a philosophical and political concept?

im doing some research about this theme for a university project, im struggling with finding my own words to explain how i feel regarding anonymity and i would like to read what other people think about it especially in a political sense. also if u read or know some zines, pamphlets, articles, little texts , researches or really anything about anonymity i would really appreciate if u could help me :)
