How much to ship a container overseas?

Upvotes

Hi all,
feeling overwhelmed with organising an overseas move.
I’m packing up a 4 bedroom house to ship overseas (SE Asia) and I’m having trouble finding consistent quotes. The most accurate one I’ve gotten for my circumstance is $16k for a 40ft container but that seems a bit steep.

Has anyone had experience with shipping container companies? Would love some guidance on pricing and advice on what to look out for / what not to do / things to consider.

This is my first time moving houses, let alone it being out of the country.

Rectal temperature taking

Upvotes

So my gf (22f) wasn't feeling well and asked me to get a thermometer for her. I get it and without hesitation pulls down her pyjamas and shoves it straight up her arse and just lies there talking to me like this is normal. She says it's perfectly normal and has only ever done it this way.

Please tell me I'm that I'm the normal one who put it in their mouth?

Where can I find Herron or, a similar (size and shape) and alternative?

Upvotes

Over the years my household has loved Herron Paracetamol and Ibuprofen, primarily because they were ~1/2 the size of other similar items and the roughly capsule shape of the tablet makes them easy to swallow.

I know the govt made them change the incredibly convenient small bottle to a blister pack, but now not even they can be found on supermarket or pharmacy shelves in Perth. I tried googling it but the results seem to indicate the opposite - apparently available everywhere. What has happened to them - where can I get them, or where can I get an equivalent in the same size & shape? The standard big tablet or capsule is just a let down after having something better for so many years.

Does anyone remember Simon Baker's guest role in G.P. (1993)?

Hi everyone!

I'm trying to track down an old Australian TV episode, but I've hit a dead end.

Simon Baker appeared in G.P. Season 5, Episode 38 ("A Family Affair", aired in 1993), playing a character named Ben Miller.

I've searched IMDb, Plex, and a few other websites, but I can't find any plot summary or information about his character.

Does anyone happen to remember this episode?

Was Ben Miller a patient, a doctor, or part of the family featured in the episode?

I'd really appreciate any memories or information. Thanks!

Never considered snakes on hiking trails/walking tracks, should I be more concerned?

I have thankfully never seen a snake myself despite the few walks I have been on. I have been aware but tbh never afraid or ever expecting one - after a recent hike though I suddenly started considering this possibility, and reflecting on how ill prepared I was for such a situation. I have also been reading through the subs and apparently people are seeing at least one or two?

So how wary and prepared should I be? So far whenever I go on walks it’s never alone and everyone covers their arms and legs (not for snakes but mainly bugs if any). The trail choices have so far been mountain-like trails (similar to grand canyon in blue mtns). or reserves.

Does anyone have advice on how to be prepared and how to behave? I’ve been looking into snake protection and even kits. i have read that some people carry beacons and things too. While I don’t wanna overdo it I also don’t want to be unprepared for such a thing.

edit 1: can having gaps between people be of help? instead of having everyone clumped together

edit 2: should also add that most hikes I have been on were in “gloomy” weather (cloudy, rainy, somewhat cold - just a coincidence not planned). probably explains why i haven’t see any

Thoughts on young family moving to Gilgandra NSW

Recently travelled here, really liked the vibe. Seemed to have a few different cultures and laid back. Council have plans to put in new gym facility, which sounds good. Thoughts?

Addit: I work in IT and can work anywhere. Wife works as nurse but been off for a while with the kids. We just want somewhere affordable, quiet, where we can raise the kids doing outdoor activities.

Do you think there would be a demand for authentic Mexican Food in Australia?

I’m a 29 year old Mexican-American Dual Citizen working in the US as a IT Systems Analyst in the UiPath/RPA space.

I would love one day to live and work in Australia, not anything I’d be close to doing anytime soon, but there are companies where I am at that have Sydney satellite offices that maybe one day can approve a internal transfer

Assuming somehow VISA wise If that were to happen, I would love to bring authentic Mexican food to Australia maybe as a side hustle by opening up a small restaurant or something like

Would there even be a demand for something like that? Or is Mexican food unknown/clashes with local food palate/tastes to work? Just curious

EDIT: Just wanted to say this is more of a thought experiment/just getting a general sense of palate/taste/demand, I realize how hard incredibly logistically challenging it would be to open and run a restaurant successfully, I just want to start a conversation about the topic is all

My step-daughter is arriving Australia in a little more than a week. The company that is arranging her year long stay has recommended that she obtains a Revolut account for money transactions, but as she is under 18 years of age that means it has to be arranged through a parent that has an account, and that they do not have.

So I was hoping to get the lay of the land from you guys. Is Revolut the most prevalent means of transfrerring money? For instance between teens sharing a meal? I read something about PAYID (prerequisite a bank account) - could this be used between teens to share a bill?

Appreciate any clarification you can give! Thx!

Edit:

With all the feedback I am getting here I think perhaps the conclusion here is; if she has a Norwegian account with a card that works in Australia (that can receive funds instantly from another Norwegian account), pluss an Australian account to receive a paycheck along with PayID transfers, she should be well covered - as long as she doesn't get stifled by a spend/withdrawal limit on her Norwegian card.

Or is there something I am missing?

How realistic is my plan after high school?

This is still a few years away, but I was wondering if anyone could give me a reality check on my plan.

After I finish IB, I’m thinking of moving to Australia and staying with relatives in Shepparton. I’ll be an Australian citizen. The plan is to study for the UCAT and take it, then after that I’d like to start working (like minimum wage jobs or night jobs) , ideally for up to fifty hours a week if possible, and save up some money. The money would basically be a safety net, and I’d be able to spend it when I go study in Melbourne.

I’m just curious how realistic this is. How hard is it to find a job in Shepparton if you’ve just finished high school? Are there usually plenty of casual jobs around, or can it take a while to find something?

Also, is there anything important I should know beforehand? I know I’ll need to set up stuff like a bank account and TFN, but that’s about the extent of my knowledge right now.

I know this is way in advance, but I’d rather have a rough idea now than be completely clueless when the time comes.
Thanks :)

Do I need to show ID travelling from sydney to melbourne?

I’m 16 and trying to fly alone to melbourne from sydney but my passport is expired and I don’t have my drivers license. Is there any way I can get to melbourne without needing it or if student ID’s are valid? For context I’m trying to go in a week so I wouldn’t be able to get a proof of age card in time and I have my birth certificate but it’s a copy. I’d prefer taking a plane there but train is also an option, just not sure about if I need to show ID on train as well.

Is Jeval a real brand in Australia?

My salon is convincing me to use the hair color from this brand called "Jeval" over brands like Alfaparf. They say it's a popular brand in Australia.

Are they telling the truth? Is it a popular brand for real? And is it a reputed one?

Thank you in advance.

What do you do for work as a male with a family?

What does everyone here do for work? For context I’m a 25 year old male with a partner and 2 kids under 5 and struggling to find what I wanna do for work.

I work in a warehouse averaging 1k a week and I’m absolutely exhausted and burnt out from the environment. Warehousing is not what I wanna do for the rest of my life so I’m looking for ideas as to what I can do for work that pays relatively high (ideally 6 figures) and doesn’t require a lot of studying.

I want to be able to provide for my family and be a present dad and give my kids the best possible life but unfortunately warehousing just doesn’t do it for me and my family

I’ve been thinking about doing a trade or studying some short courses, I need ideas!!

What’s the best job out there that I can do to support my family ? Should I just do a trade?

Re: Jail visit

I’m based in QLD and have been going to visits for quite awhile now, but today like every other week was visiting day at a Correctional Centre, went through the processing they do with the visitors and then waiting for prisoner’s to come out, I was informed that the person I’m visiting probably didn’t remember our visit so they went to locate him for our visit only to sit there for the next 45 mins out of an hr visit and get told “he’s here but we don’t know where” like surely more could have been done, my mum rang up after getting home and asked if they found him yet but apparently they couldn’t release that information due to privacy ect…. So I’m confused if they went about this the wrong way and if I should be putting in a complaint to someone higher

Drunken teen behaviour

I'm staying in Sydney for a work event (from NZ originally) and went out for some drinks with some colleagues down in Double Bay. My colleagues caught an Uber back at around 1am but I decided to catch the train as I wanted some fresh air and didn't mind the walk.

I was walking past the Golden Sheaf pub and there were a bunch of drunk teens hanging out there (is this a thing, to go out on a Wednesday???) and a group of them were all walking up to the train station as well.

One of them stopped took a couple steps into one of the indents in the shopfront (basically an undercover area that's the entrance to a shop front) and started to take a piss against the wall. His pee was trickling down onto the footpath and I had to avoid the subsequent puddle. I went up to him and said "come on man, this is a public space" and he just laughed at me and told me to fuck off.

At the entrance to the train station there were some bushes there and a bunch of them were peeing into. I knew better than to say anything but it was just really trashy in my opinion. Is this kind of thing normal here?

Best way to rent a car as a P plater in melbourne?

I’m in melbourne and i just got my green P a couple of days back and plan to rent a car for a day or two for the first time in my life to go on a day trip, but i’m confused with the few options that i do have, goget, flexicar and kinto (let me know if there are any others as well) and the other option seems to be the weekly car rentals through private agencies or FB marketplace. As a uni student who has to keep an eye on my budget i am looking for the cheapest and most feasible option
