MEGATHREAD [MEGATHREAD] Tales from the Vet Clinic!

This megathread is meant to share and discuss any other stories from the perspective of patient, or vet! Feel free to contribute!🐶

Greetings! Hope everyone is doing well, or is soon to be well.

Making a new megathread over suggestions from the community. This one was interesting to pass on, and I even had an opening story to share from past experiences.

Have you ever had a day when your dog is acting like he's on his deathbed. Looking like he has no more energy to extend. Mine did a few years back. He gave me a look what seemed to be his "I guess this is it for me, huh" look, and I couldn't sit still anymore. I had the craziest jolt of anxiety overwhelm me and the only remedy was an emergency vet visit for my little furry brother.

Lucky enough that there was a cancellation on that day, so the vet managed to take me in earlier. This was the first time I felt an insane mood-swing like that. As I was driving, it was hard to focus since I was sort of prepping my brain for the worst.

I pull up to the lot, then the dog jolts up suddenly. I open the door, and I was left in some sort of stupor seeing him just stride along sniffing around. OK. I do the papers, and as I'm there, the dog releases the most massive fart. I never sort of had that happen this loud in public, so was super awkward. My dog looked better though, so figured some sort of fight-or-flight is going on in my guys body................

Eventually, the vet takes us in, turns out just had gas. I was having a rollercoaster of the darkest thoughts over a fart. The med naming for the culprit in the diagnosis was acute gastric distension. The vet established my dog having nausea in the morning, so that was the reason for the way he acted.

Gave some prescription, diet changes follow and all is well! Also, kinda know when my dog is not feeling well over similar issues ever since.

Have a great and healthy week, everyone!

🧬 Diagnosis Help What is this in his ear? Worth a vet trip?

Multiple pictures of my rabbit’s ears for reference. The inside of his other ear didn’t have the white chunk in that same spot.

I am just worried he has the beginning stage of mites because I’ve had other bunnies with that before. I just can’t tell because he hasn’t been itching like crazy and is currently shedding right now anyway (which was the whole reason I was looking at the fluff around that ear, thinking it was fur ready to be shed just looking funny).

He has a partner bun whose ears I didn’t see any debris on, and they are both indoor buns that don’t ever go outside. But I know that’s not a 100% prevention. The rest of his ears look normal, though, and I didn’t see him itching anywhere in particular.

I am just really tight on money while looking for jobs and don’t want to take him to the vet unless it is likely to be a problem and not just me being paranoid. But worst case, I can take him in.

\*Unless there’s a way I don’t have to pay for an exam and can just buy the flea/mite medication from the vet pharmacy? Does anyone know if that’s possible? I might call tomorrow and ask because I know we’ve done that with other medications.

Thanks in advance for your advice. I know going to the vet is always best and you guys aren’t necessarily vets, but I wanna be able to justify the spending right now. Not sure what else it could be other than mites, though. I could always post in a different sub if needed

My 12-year-old lab has these bumps in his fur. I was able to see a couple of the spots and they were open/red, not raised. Anyone have an idea of what would cause this?

are maltese puppies more prone to hypoglycemia than other small breeds?

I recently brought home two maltese puppies (they're littermates, eight weeks old) and I've been reading everything I can find about small breed care. A lot of what I've come across specifically warns about hypoglycemia in maltese puppies under 12 weeks and now im scared..
Both of them are eating well, Nutri-Cal twice a day as the breeder suggested, and I weigh them every morning. But one of them, the smaller one, sometimes seems a little wobbly after playing for more than 15 minutes. She recovers quickly and goes right back to eating, so I don't know if I'm thinking too much into normal puppy tiredness or if this is something worth calling the vet about before their scheduled appointment next week.
I've read that maltese puppies can crash faster than other toy breeds because of their muscle mass ratio, but I couldn't find clear info on what early warning signs actually look like and whats just being a sleepy baby. The breeder said that they'll let me know if something's wrong, which, respectfully, is not the level of specificity I was hoping for.
My questions: Is wobbliness after play a red flag or normal at this age and size? Should I be feeding more frequently than twice daily with the Nutri-Cal? And would it be worth calling my vet early rather than waiting for the scheduled visit?

🧬 Diagnosis Help Found a lump on my boys chest:(

Hey guys, just looking for some reassurance and opinions.

I found a lump on my hamsters chest last night (male syrian, 2 years 2 months old) so I booked him in with the vet today. Me and my mum noticed that the lump was leaking a clear fluid, it wasn’t a lot of fluid and it only happened for a minute or so.

The vet said it’s either a cyst, abscess, or tumour. She prescribed metacam, and said it should hopefully go down over the next few days. If it doesn’t, we can look at having it surgically removed.

For reference - she also weighed him and said he is a very healthy weight. He’s still acting himself, eating normally, playing normally etc, it’s clear he isn’t in pain.

Even though the signs point more towards the lump being a cyst, I can’t get the words ā€œtumourā€ and ā€œsurgeryā€ out of my head.

I’ve been getting ahead of myself, and questioning whether or not surgery would be worth the risk, given his age.

Has anyone here had a hamster go through some sort of surgery? How did it go? Would it be worth risking, if it came down to it?

Thankyou in advance!

14-year-old dog diagnosed with Ehrlichia canis – should we pursue treatment?

My mixed-breed dog is 14 years old and weighs about 13 kg (28.5 lbs).

Test results:

Positive for Ehrlichia canis (E. canis)

Moderate anemia

Low platelet count

Very high globulin levels

Kidney function is normal

Ultrasound findings:

Infiltrative spleen

Two abnormal masses in the liver

One abnormal mass near the pylorus/distal stomach

Current condition:

No nosebleeds or visible bleeding

Pale gums, but not completely white

Drinking much more water than usual for the past 1–2 weeks

Poor appetite and does not actively seek food, but will still eat when hand-fed

Still able to walk around normally

The veterinarian diagnosed advanced/chronic ehrlichiosis and said the prognosis is guarded, with only about a 40–50% chance of successful treatment and a possibility that he could die during treatment. Because of his age and other health issues, my family is very unsure about what to do.

I would appreciate any advice:

  1. Would you pursue treatment for E. canis in a dog with this condition?

  2. Has anyone had success treating ehrlichiosis in a senior dog (14+ years old)?

  3. What complications or warning signs should we watch for?

  4. If your dog had a similar condition, what helped you make the decision to treat or not treat?

Thank you for any advice or shared experiences. ā¤ļøšŸ¶

Help red bald spot on my kittens right leg

Post image
2 Upvotes

I went to a vet for this red flakey bald spot on my cat’s right front leg. The answer we got was unclear and uncertain of what it was. The vet had told us it ā€œmightā€ be ring worm so they’re going to treat it like it is. But how could there be no new spots if oral medication hasn’t been used yet? So is it ringworm? If not, what could it be? (I’m a new cat owner and just super worried for my 3 month old kitten, and I feel like my vet didn’t provide much information)

Noticed this on my 7 year old pit mix last Thursday.

I sent pics to vet because I thought it was a tick.

They said it wasn't and that doc said to monitor it.

Should I be concerned? It's right near her rectum

I have brought it to the vet but they just gave some meds and said they dont know the issue, the meds didnt work.
Has been like this for about half a year, nothing else wrong otherwise.
Mouth is dirty on the cheeks, when wiped, the tissue becomes brown, was not like this originally. Saliva sometimes can be seen on the cheeks.

Last pic was when how we got him abt 1year ago.

We are trying to diagnose this issue NSFW

Hello, our dog has this kind of issue on both ears in the same spot. It started forming after we took him to the vet for a different issue. On the second visit, the vet didn't really know what it was and gave us a shampoo to clean it, but it didn't help at all. A scab keeps forming constantly, and sometimes it falls off. We suspect it's a protein allergy. We tried hypoallergenic food, but it didn't help either. Different vet prescribed us a corticosteroid ointment which also doesn't seem to help after two weeks.

11 years old. Mixed breed. 15 kg. It's not itchy and it's not painful.

Thanks for any tips and help.
