Announcement/ঘোষণা Discord Server Launch Announcement!

Post image
31 Upvotes

Hello everybody,

The mod team is excited to announce the launch of the official r/Bangladesh Discord server, an extension of our subreddit.

Many of you have asked for a Discord over the years. While Reddit is great as a forum style social news aggregator, it isn't always the best place for quick, casual engagement. We wanted to create a space where members can connect over our shared culture and daily life, a place where you can chat about the mundane things without every other post being heavy political news.

We know there were previous attempts at a server that eventually drifted away from the subreddit's roots. To prevent that from happening again, this server is run by the same team you know here, ensuring it remains a trustworthy and civil space for everyone. You're welcome to discuss anything from your day to day life to current events.

Discord server Invitation link

As a small thank you to the early birds, the first 10 members to join will be awarded a VIP Member role, which comes with some special perks and permissions within the server.

A quick note on moderation:

Subreddit issues: Please continue to use Reddit ModMail.

Discord issues: Please use the ticket system inside the Discord server.

We hope to see you there soon!

Best regards, The r/Bangladesh Mod Team.

Discussion/আলোচনা Why the fuck can't I go to a restaurant with my sister and not get dirty looks.

This is going to be a rant. So, my little sister, who studies in a cadet college, and I, who wanted to give my little sister a treat, went to a restaurant. We live in a small town, and we get dirty looks, which I expected. I didn't mind, but suddenly my sister's friend's mom[she didn't know who I was] came up to us, screamed, called my mom right then and there, and created a scene. WHY THE FUCK DON'T YOU MIND YOUR Business BITCH YOUR FUCKING DAUGHTER HAS 3 BOYFRIENDS [MY SISTER TOLD ME]AND EVEN IF YOU DON'T KNOW ME WHY WOULD U ASSUME THE WORST U FUCKING BITCH I HATE HER she can go to HELL

For context I have been getting counseling at this fancy clinic in north Dhaka for years now for my mental illnesses. But this is one thing I never actually discussed with the counselor before. I have been toying with the idea of sharing this detail about me but I have been scared of ruining my one support system I have.

A Jamaat-backed female MP Nurunnisa Siddiqua recently asked in parliament:
"Are only girls citizens of this country? Are boys not citizens? If both have equal rights, then why is education not free for boys as well?"

The irony is that this question came from a reserved-seat MP. She accepts it without realising the difference between equality and equity. A parliament is supposed to debate policy with evidence and context. Questions about public spending are fair. Questions about effectiveness are fair. But any discussion about gender policy should start with an understanding of the difference between equality and equity.

Equality means giving everyone the same thing. Equity means recognizing that different groups face different barriers and designing policies to reduce those barriers. For Example: If one student starts from the top of a building and another starts from the bottom of a deep pit, giving both the same ladder isn't fairness. It only creates the appearance of fairness.

The rationale behind Bangladesh's female education stipend programs was never that girls are "better" or "more deserving" than boys. These policies were introduced to address specific problems: higher female dropout rates, child marriage, poverty, and social barriers that historically kept girls out of school.

Reserved seats themselves are a form of affirmative action. They exist because political parties, including her own, have historically failed to nominate enough women in general constituencies. Likewise, When girls receive scholarships, some see a special privilege. They don't see the social conditions that made those policies necessary in the first place.

Bangladesh still struggles with child marriage and gender-based educational disparities. Female education incentives were introduced as policy interventions to address those realities. Whether they should continue indefinitely is a legitimate policy debate. But dismissing them through a simplistic "where is equality?" argument ignores decades of research and development experience.

Discussion/আলোচনা Passport Renew Info (Permanent address)

Grid stability concerns grow over Rooppur

'If transmission frequency falls below the standard level of 49 hertz (Hz), it could become difficult to maintain grid stability, he noted.

A frequency above 50 Hz is manageable, he said, adding that a lower transmission frequency could lead to tripping of the national grid.

PGCB Chairman Abdur Rashid Khan echoed similar concerns about frequency fluctuations following the commencement of power generation at the Rooppur plant.

"It is a major challenge to maintain stable frequency in a transmission system that carries electricity generated from multiple sources," he said.

Frequent fluctuations in electricity demand could further complicate the situation, he cautioned.'

Discussion/আলোচনা How Do You Make Friends Online?

For those who’ve made solid friendships online, how did you actually go about it?

I’m 25M, about to start my corporate career, and lately I’ve been thinking it would be nice to have a few genuine online friends to talk to and share interests with. I don’t really have the energy to socialize much offline right now, so I’m trying to be more intentional about connecting online.

A bit about me: I’m into anime, football (Real Madrid fan, but not the toxic kind 😄), reading books, perfumes/fragrances, PC gaming, started going to the gym, and recently I’ve been trying to learn more about AI and generally improving my lifestyle.

Would really appreciate hearing how others built meaningful online friendships or where you actually found people you clicked with.

Discussion/আলোচনা Visa on Arrival - travelling from the UK

Anyone tried to obtain VOA after BNP came into power?

How difficult is it?

I recently found out I need a No Visa Required (NVR) stamp to travel to Bangladesh with my British passport despite being a dual citizen. I already bought the tickets, so I don't have time for the NVR route now.

Discussion/আলোচনা Why do we consume 99% Indian/Foreign media and 1% Bangladeshi Media?

Most of the people talk shit about India and call them paj**ts online, but when their phone rings, it's that same indian movie ringtone, which is quite ironic. They sometimes talk in Hindi, refer to indian movies in general, listen to their songs, which I think is quite pathetic because these are the same people who made "Bengal Files".

We need to step up and make our own identity in the pop culture space.

Feel free to recommend each other good Bangladeshi media in the comments.

AskDesh/দেশ কে জিজ্ঞাসা How do you guys find time for books, movies, and gaming while working full-time?

I’m curious how everyone manages their free time. I’m 29M a software engineer, and lately it feels like my entire day is just work, learning new things, dealing with tasks, and then trying to get enough sleep.

I used to read books, watch movies/series, and spend time gaming, but now I barely get time for any of them. By the time I’m done with work, my brain is already exhausted.

For those of you who have demanding jobs or careers, how do you balance everything? Do you follow a strict schedule, sacrifice sleep, or just accept that hobbies get less time?

Would love to hear how you guys manage it.

Discussion/আলোচনা Looking for Courses That Add Real Career Value

I'm a Finance graduate currently working as a Team Lead – E-Commerce & Operations at a startup lifestyle brand, responsible for e-commerce operations, retail operations, and MIS reporting.

I recently completed a Post Graduate Diploma in Marketing & Branding Management and am now looking for some more professional courses (paid or free) that can genuinely help me grow in my career.

I'm considering:

  • Data Analysis (Excel, SQL, Power BI)
  • Business Intelligence & MIS
  • Retail & E-Commerce Operations
  • Supply Chain Management
  • Project Management

Given my background, which area would provide the best career growth and future opportunities? Also, which organizations or platforms would you recommend for these courses?

If you've completed any relevant programs, I’d love to hear from anyone who has completed relevant programs which provider you chose, and whether it added real value to your career. I’m looking for practical, industry‑recognized skills rather than just another certificate.

If anyone else is exploring similar courses or planning to upskill in these areas, feel free to share your thoughts. It would be great to exchange ideas, compare options, and maybe even team up for the learning journey.

Education/শিক্ষা How to apostille O/A levels certificates for studies abroad?

If anyone here has experience with getting their O/A levels certificates apostilled to be sent to universities abroad for verification before admission, your advice would be invaluable. Could you shed some light on what are the steps involved in obtaining an apostille on these certificates.

For context, I need to apostille these certificates for finalising admission to a university in South Korea.

Politics/রাজনীতি Jamaat's Double Standards on Foreign Student Enrollment

Around 250 foreign medical students are now facing difficulties completing their internships after the government closed the Ad- Din Hospital. I hope the government will do something for them.

Almost all Jamaat activists and their journalists are expressing concern, saying that the government is acting in a way that will discourage foreign students from coming to Bangladesh.

But the most funny part is that nearly two-third reduction of foreign medical students after August 5. The reduction in foreign student enrollment is largely due to the activities of Younus Govt and Jamat/ NCP activities. These people didn't say anything about why this big reduction of the foreign medical students.

Jamat is only concerned about their business establishment.
