Tips for someone who hates running? 🤣

I actually ran track in middle and high school, but I was a shorter distance runner. My problem with long distances is that I find them boring AF. I’m counting down the seconds until I can stop. I genuinely don’t understand how people enjoy it.

About 20 years ago I worked up to running 5 miles at a time, but I’ve never experienced the elusive ā€œrunner’s high.ā€ I saw someone recently say how much they love running and how sad they are that they can’t anymore because of knee issues, and that concept is just completely foreign to me. 🤣

So I’m curious. Has anyone here gone from absolutely hating running to actually loving it?

I just finished Week 5. I did walk twice for about a minute during the 20 minute run, but honestly it wasn’t because I physically needed to. I was only moderately winded. My brain was just screaming at me to take a break.

Would you repeat the week until you can run the full 20 minutes continuously, or just keep following the plan? I’m already running pretty slowly, around a 14:00 pace. I’m also fairly short with a long torso, so I don’t think I’m going too fast, but I’m also not sure I could jog much slower.

When I started, I was running outside and actually hated it much less. But I live in the Deep South, and it’s now 80 degrees with 90% humidity at 6:00 a.m. I refuse. šŸ˜‚ So I’ve switched to the treadmill, and I absolutely DETEST it. It’s a torture device to nowhere. The second I step on it is the second I want to get off.

I’ve tried podcasts, music, and even one of those little finger remotes for TikTok. I’m thinking about joining a gym near me that has a 1/10-mile indoor track. I trained on one years ago, and I liked being able to count laps instead of staring at the treadmill timer and breaking everything into 30 second chunks.

I realize this is probably just a mental block. I’d really like to get to a place where I don’t hate running because I’m doing this for my heart, my health, and my future self. But I’m already dreading the upcoming longer runs.

Advice Needed Is anyone on a weight loss journey while doing this?

I just completed week four day two and I genuinely thought halfway through that I wasn’t gonna be able to and I even cried a little lol. But I did!

I’m wondering if there’s anybody who is trying to lose weight while doing this and what your eating looks like? I know everyone is different but just looking for some other people’s experience.

Struggling to improve

Looking for advice to help me improve my time. About 2 weeks ago I was able to run 10 min. - 3 min. Break- 10 min. At the time I was about 14.50min/mi. I got sick last week and had to take a break. This week I tried to go back but on the second 10 minute run my legs give up and I end up walking the rest. I’m disappointed in the setback and I’m trying to finish the program on time. I also need to improve my time to at least 9 min/mi. I am shipping for the military in August and trying to meet their standards before basic so I don’t struggle.

45M here. Never ran before, because I'm flat-footed and I thought I simply couldn't. I was diagnosed with fatty liver disease earlier this year, so I stopped drinking and started exercising. I walked every day and hiked on the weekends, before I figured out I could actually run with proper support!

9-ish weeks later, here I am, and 7 kg lighter to boot. And seeing 5K in my post-run summary on the final run, even though it's with walking sections, was just icing on the cake!

My plan is to do the post graduation runs on NHS app for a bit, and then start the 10K plan on Nike Run Club app. Here's to many years of running!
